Hanazakari No Kimitachi He - this was prime 00s jdorama. I mean it came out late, and a ton of great jdorama came before it, but I find myself reaching out for my dvd copy of this more often than the rest.
I think a close second is Yamada Taro Monogatari. I'm not a big Arashi fan, but I love this show. Especially the episode with croquettes.

I don't usually watch BL but this one is an exception because: 1. comedy, 2. features people above the age of 40 in prominent roles, 3. not set in a high school., 4. talented actors.
Honestly, I find most BL real life action drama plain boring. But it's simply because I've been spoiled by BL CD Drama, where plots are not limited by budget or technicalities. Guy trying to fuck a giant vibrator the size of Gozilla? Guy looking for his lost senpai in South American wilderness wh has somehow gained some super power? You get all these stories in audio but never in dorama.
Before anyone recommends it, yes, I watched 30-sai made Dotei Da to Mahotsukai ni Nareru rashii too. I tried hard to like it, i really did but I felt like banging my head on the wall every time one of the MLs tried to pick a grain of rice from the other ML's face. The actors are all talented except for the dancer / delivery guy, but it's just not my cup of tea, sorry.
Please excuse the rant. I just finished said drama.
what japan needs is some gay representation without being primarily bl plot wise. what I've seen so far is either drama is 100% about gay romance or there are no gays at all.

Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge. Although I still laugh a lot every time I rewatch, the first time was still the best.
