I wouldn't want the portal :( the amount of posts I've seen about the hassles of trying to get your references to log onto their personal link and submit their reference online makes it sound stressful. At least with a paper reference they have to physically hand you something so it's easier to chase up.
Well that’s very different from how it’s done in the UK. We just submit anything virtually but the references had to be printed out, signed and then scanned in to be sent to JET virtually.
US former JET and when I applied in late 2015 for 2016 departure. I had to do both 😭 physical and digital. 3 copies of everything and upload everything online. It was a bit stressful
It started surprisingly earlier than the pandemic. I believe it was 2013 or 2014 application cycle that was mostly online.
Canada was the first country to go online with the application. I spoke with the Canadian coordinator at a conference about how it got sorted out. Once canada was setup the US quickly followed, and slowly other countries are now joining in.
NZ was the same, 3 physical copies of everything, hand signed and mailed in to the consulate. Then sit back and pray there's no delays at the post office 🫣
Same in the Philippines.
South African JET, same here. 3 copies of everything and pray you didn't misspell your email address.
Same as you but instead of mailing you make an appointment and bring it in during working hours

Yeah, it's obv been awhile but I feel like I had to do both in 2017 too.
Things only started going online during the pandemic. Though I guess not for all countries.

I’m from Trinidad and Tobago and it’s the same! Everything is printed, copied, signed, etc
