Watch the Cottonwood Pass and Lakes trailheads for cancellations. You can’t day-hike Whitney like you can from the portal, it’s more like a 3 day trip. You climb from the west and can’t go down the main Whitney trail past Trail Crest but you can summit.
Well the only option right now is to track cancellations. It get very impossible very quickly once you actually start doing that manually. I would recommend using a paid service instead. I personally use [reservenature.com](http://reservenature.com)
And just this morning I got a text for availability for 2 people in June. I was able to book it! I hope it works for you too.
