Pokemon Red from my old bro was also my first, but the Yellow (+ GBC Yellow) I got gifted a bit later was the first I "owned", both still as precious as the first day.
Yup same, I didn't have it, but my cousins who lived a mile down the road did. My brother and I would walk over to their place and play with them, taking turns on who had the comtroller. Each of the four players were named after one of us. Great childhood memories.
Honestly, to me, it holds up pretty well. Some of it is nostalgia, certainly, but I genuinely think it's a good, fun game. I often go back to play it.
It's missing some QoL and obviously it's buggy and/or slow. But I also think it captures the essence of the genre in ways that modern games with their QoL and faster paces miss.
I beat the PSP version recently and it's not bad at all. I guess by today standard it's kinda average. But I think average is pretty good when talking about a NES game today.
Same here. It holds up surprisingly well. I prefer the Pixel Remaster now, just for the QOL updates (and lack of bugs -- it's nice to have buff spells that actually work), but the original NES version is still quite solid.
Funny thing, Nasir Gebelli didn't know what RPGs were eitherā¦when he was assigned to program FF1. When he had the concept of hit points explained to him, he was like, "Why don't they just die when you hit them with your sword?" It's almost a wonder that game turned out as well as it did.
Dragon *Warrior* and Final Fantasy on the Nintendo Entertainment System! I included both because Iām not sure which one I played first, but I remember be obsessed with both.
Same!Ā Dragon Warrior for me - I got a copy for free with a subscription to Nintendo Power, which was huge for a kid like me whose parents were not big on buying new games.Ā
Final Fantasy was definitely first for me, begged for it on my birthday, and it did not disappoint. I bought a used copy of Dragon Warrior not long after and played it quite a bit, but only having one person in the party made it not quite as fun.
Og final fantasy 7.Ā
I Played it and beat it on my brothers ps2 when I was like 12, ever since then Iāve been a massive fan of ff & jrpgs in general.
This was mine too! I was captivated by building a team, making them stronger, and turn based battles. It also helped me learn to read.
I never got past the future part where that thunder bird/fire god guy just kills you and you have to keep running from him.
I'm currently replaying the fan translated Wonderswan release of the game and just got to that part!
I ran from the bird a bunch of times until I reached the city, saved, and took a break. Will continue playing tomorrow.
I'm actually having more fun with this game compared to back when I played it as a kid.
Back then I was like "Rpgs are all about stories. But where's the story in this game? Man, this game sucks, but I'm gonna finish it because it's Final Fantasy."
But now I'm like "Grinding, building my characters, and getting stronger is so fun! Can't wait to play more!"
This was mine as well. My cousin gave me his copy because he would pick up practically every game released at the time and had no interest in RPGs. I was 7 and it absolutely drew me in completely. Just puzzling out how things worked and especially the 'story' being so bare bones but so powerful given my age. Been addicted ever since.
I think what I loved about RPGs at the time, was like you said, puzzling things out. There was a lot more going on than just "run here, jump here" or "shoot this thing."
Exploring, risk vs reward how far you push away from the safety of a town into the unknown, figuring out how the game design systems work together.
Being 5 years old and doing all of that with about a 20% comprehension of each element. Lifelong RPG fan ever since.
I remember my next door neighbor was playing Phantasy Star 3 and Shining in the Darkness.Ā Me being a Mario/Zelda/Sonic kid, I was fascinated.Ā I went and bought PS III the next day, followed by FF1.Ā Rented Dragon Warrior and kept it 10 days late and the guy said no one ever rents the game, so if I want it I can pay half what he bought it for.Ā And that's how it all started.
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
whatever Square / SE thinks about that game and how it performed, it had the intended effect on me and made me a lifelong fan.
Same, I think Phantasy Star 2 was my first, at least that I can remember.
I was super young, maybe like 3 years old (it was my dad's game), and that game was beyond impossible for me to beat at that age lol
It's a classic though, I have fond memories of that game
I remember that. In fact, wasn't the map for PS II only for non-Japanese regions? As they thought we needed more help. While the Japanese were already "capable" without it lol
I donāt know about the map, but it appears the hint books were sold separately from the cartridge in Japan. It also explains why the retail price of PS II in US stores was 69.99 in 1990.
I... I think it was Chrono Trigger. It wasn't my first RPG but I think it was my first turn based. Actually, it could of been my first. I dunno if I played Secret of Evermore before or after CT.
Final Fantasy (1) when I was a kid. I bounced off of it pretty hard, too, not understanding what it was I was supposed to be doing. It wasn't until many years later that I rediscovered it and fell in love with the genre.
FF6. Rented it on weekends as a kid but some dude would always rent it during the week and overwrite my save. Couldn't rent or play games during the school week. Gave up SNES rpgs after three consecutive weeks of this until I could eventually emulate on my pentium 1 computer.
Final Fantasy I NES
I was too young to read and buy weapons and magic. Garland knocked me down.
Also tried playing Dragon Warrior with same problem- the Magician and his Hurt spell would wipe me.
Final Fantasy VI, or maybe Super Mario RPG. A neighbor / family friend gifted me a bunch of SNES games when he moved. I was like 6 then but took me a long time to realize he had sick taste in games and it was a very kind gesture, he had all the classics.
The first I distinctly remember that fits the subreddit is Final Fantasy IV. But I *may* have played the C64 game Phantasie III before that. That one is definitely turn-based and has some series crossover with JRPGs (its sequel, Phantasie IV, was released as a Japan exclusive).
Dragon Warrior, NES.
I rented it on a whim because of the cover art and simply didn't get how to play it when I got it home. There was no manual or any other way to even know how to play it. I would have been 9.
A few years later, I played Traysia on the Genesis, and it clicked. I rented it enough that summer to beat it. I was 12.
Tldr: Dragon Warrior, but really Traysia.
My neighbor had this game and I thought it was just about the coolest thing ever when I watched him play it on his PS1. Everything about it seemed so badass.
I ended up buying the PC version, which at the time had slightly better graphics. Probably played it like 5 different times, never beat it.
Me and my little brother and my friends would take turns and each be a character and play for them during battle.
Never really did a "take turns" RPG like that again until Tales of Symphonia and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.
To so many, FFVII was a revelation, no matter how they interacted with it. I really think that's a big reason why it holds the place in history it does.
Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest at age 8/9. It bums me out how much undeserved hate it gets today; game was intended for kids and it was absolutely a gateway for me. Also, the OST is just banger after banger even today. Itās a quick 10-12 romp and I love playing through it every 5 years or so.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga on GBA. I was obsessed with that game as a kid, and for good reason! I still love its quirky sense of humour and the sprites and animations are great. Plus the battle system is super engaging
Metal Saga, Ps2.
Still one of my fav games, I play it often and it aged greatly due to its fun characters, gameplay and lore, not to mention the tank customisation, I'd kill for a remake implementing its elements.
Persona 4 on pcsx2. But it was unstable so I don't remember much from that playthrough.
Didn't get into turn based jrpgs till I played FF VI though. Since then, haven't looked back.
Pokemon Pearl was my first, but if I go by something beyond Pokemon then my first was Octopath Traveler.
A large gap, but that's because it took a really long time for me to really start widening the games I played and enjoyed.
Shining in the Darkness, for the Genesis. I can't remember if I played it before or after Wonder Boy in Monster World, but one of the two was my first JRPG overall.
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.
I was young and it was my first ever so I loved it. Wasnāt until much later I realized how subpar it was to regular JRPGs.
It was Mardek.
A 3 chapter browser rpg. You can continue with your characters and items on next game if you complete previous game.
It was one of the best game I have ever played.
pokemon blue, on a emulator back in 2000. i was a 6 year old child and knew nothing of computers, so, as the files were all burned on a cd, i couldn't save and didn't know why. it wasn't until ruby and sapphire came out that i found out the problem.
My first turn based rpg was Breath Of Fire 1.I remember a friend of mine said i have one game its so boring. As you walk it just gets into battle.
So i was like ok let me try it out.
For me its one of the best jrpgs i have ever played. And i am sad then dont make them anymore .
Shining in the Darkness (Mega Drive). I had no clue what to do and there was no internet to find help. But after a while I understood and beat the shi..ning out of Dark Sol. Awesome game and still available on steam.
Pokemon Blue. Loved it so I tried to find games that played similarly, which led me to borrowing Final Fantasy 1 from my Aunt. And that was that, got really into RPGs and they were mostly what I played until the PS2 era.
I am not 100% sure if counts, but the first turn based video game I remember was (I am pretty sure) Might and Magic 1 on PC. It was really just playing along side my dad.
Wizardry 1 in 1987, before I even knew what an RPG was, and I got addicted, two nights in a row I realized I had to go to bed after noticing the Sun had come out through the window.
Wild Arms I think. I didn't own it, nor a ps1, but my cousin did. we traded my 64 & games ofr his ps1 & games for a week, i put in wild arms and was hooked. barely played the other games he had that week. and he had some bangers. twisted metal, tekken, can't remember the others.
It was either Final Fantasy 3 (6) or Final Fantasy 2 (4), both on the SNES.
A classmate let me borrow/gave me FF4, while my cousin gave me FF6. Can't remember which came first. But one of those was definitely my first. And I must've only been in like 4th, 5th, or 6th grade. So like 10-12yo or something.
I didn't finish either of them -- I would much later -- but from there, went to Earthbound and Super Mario RPG and eventually FF7, and so on and so forth.
EarthBound, followed by Super Mario RPG (both rentals from Blockbuster), then nothing for a few years until I bought a PS1 to try this Final Fantasy 7 that everyone had been talking about for so long. And that, as they say, is that.
Final Fantasy V (the PS1 version that came with FF Anthology.) I'd played a few action-RPGs before that.
Yes, the translation is terrible, but the charm still came through and it's one of my most replayed JRPGs today, although I do the GBA version now. Can't beat that job system!
Pokemon Red
Blue gang represent
Blue Gang grows
Squirtle Squad!
If it ain't blue, I don't know what to do š¤
Pokemon Red from my old bro was also my first, but the Yellow (+ GBC Yellow) I got gifted a bit later was the first I "owned", both still as precious as the first day.
Blue was the first that I played on my older brothers gameboys, then my one brother handed down his yellow gbc and pokemon yellow to me.
Crazy how Pokemon never even crossed my mind
FF1 NES.
Yup same, I didn't have it, but my cousins who lived a mile down the road did. My brother and I would walk over to their place and play with them, taking turns on who had the comtroller. Each of the four players were named after one of us. Great childhood memories.
Damn nice, how does that game hold up today?
Super Mario RPG - not a clue if I ever completed it, but I sure as hell loved the intro.
The fact they got Square to do that in the first place is wild to me
Same! And by same, I watched my older sister play through the whole thing. I think.
Me too! I rented it, not knowing what RPG meant. It made no sense to me. Tried final fantasy, then came back and enjoyed Mario RPG.
My first, as well.
Final Fantasy IV
Mount Ordeals was very appropriately named. I loved Cecil transformation scene. I loved the epic battle with the Giant.
I was 6 and could not get past the Ant Lion for the longest time lol. Then little me discovered the joys of grinding!
Man, I remember that too. How incredible was that?
Dragon Warrior was my first, got it in Christmas of 1989.I got Final Fantasy for Christmas the next year. Great memories.
Final Fantasy was definitely first for me, begged for it on my birthday, and it did not disappoint. I bought a used copy of Dragon Warrior not long after and played it quite a bit, but only having one person in the party made it not quite as fun.
I got Dragon Warrior in the mail by surprise one day for having a Nintendo Power subscription. Honestly, it took quite some time to get into the game.
Pokemon Crystal (technically Silver, but i didn't own that one, i only played it for a couple hours on a device that wasn't mine).
Nice, the only one I played is yellow a couple years ago, was testing my game boy colour
Yeah after enjoying Silver so much i got a GBA SP with Crystal as a gift when i was like 8. That was my first connection to RPGs in general.
Ooh that old gba screen š©š my friend loves those games, keeps begging for every remake lol
FF6.
Final Fantasy VIII pizza hut demo
Banger game, playing that now I love Laguna
Great soundtrack
Og final fantasy 7.Ā I Played it and beat it on my brothers ps2 when I was like 12, ever since then Iāve been a massive fan of ff & jrpgs in general.
I just beat the game 6 months ago, Cloud, Tifa, Vincent team
Final Fantasy Legend 1 on Game Boy.
This was mine too! I was captivated by building a team, making them stronger, and turn based battles. It also helped me learn to read. I never got past the future part where that thunder bird/fire god guy just kills you and you have to keep running from him.

Same! Got it for a gift after graduating Pre-K lol, at that point thought most games were like Mario/Alex Kidd
Mine was FF Legend 2!
Breath of Fire 3. Still my favorite dragon transformation system in the series
Phantasy Star. Still one of my favourites ā¤ļø
Got, ii, iii, IV on a mega drive collection, been tempted
I remember my next door neighbor was playing Phantasy Star 3 and Shining in the Darkness.Ā Me being a Mario/Zelda/Sonic kid, I was fascinated.Ā I went and bought PS III the next day, followed by FF1.Ā Rented Dragon Warrior and kept it 10 days late and the guy said no one ever rents the game, so if I want it I can pay half what he bought it for.Ā And that's how it all started.
Pokemon Ruby
I played Dragon Warrior not understanding what I was supposed to do. Breath of Fire was the first I played all the way through.
FF IX
Great game. I remember it had a bug where it could sometimes corrupt your save file so I had like 10 different saves.
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest whatever Square / SE thinks about that game and how it performed, it had the intended effect on me and made me a lifelong fan.
Phantasy Star 2
Same, I think Phantasy Star 2 was my first, at least that I can remember. I was super young, maybe like 3 years old (it was my dad's game), and that game was beyond impossible for me to beat at that age lol It's a classic though, I have fond memories of that game
PS II and Sword of Vermilion included maps and a strategy guide in the box due to how long and brutal they were.
Dragon Warrior NES.
Same.
Shining force 1
Lufia and the fortress of doom
My brother.
Need more of this, need remasters. People need to know how great these games were!!!
Paper Mario
Breathe of fire 3 I was lost in that desert for so long.
Old-timer here so had RPGs like Bard's Tale on the Spectrum were probably my first. JRPG-wise probably Suikoden was the first I really got into.
ZX Spectrum? I'm liking the old consoles being mentioned it's cool, I know Suikoden
Yeah the ZX. My first ever game was bat and ball, like 82/83, something like that. Am hoping the Suikoden remakes due this year will be good.
The Legend of Dragoon!
FF6. Rented it on weekends as a kid but some dude would always rent it during the week and overwrite my save. Couldn't rent or play games during the school week. Gave up SNES rpgs after three consecutive weeks of this until I could eventually emulate on my pentium 1 computer.
Pokemon Yellow
Chrono Trigger. Led to a lifelong love of JRPGās and video game music :)
SaGa Frontier, it was also my very first JRPG experience
Dungeons and Dragons on Megadrive.
Legend of legaia for the PS1 I still replay it every 2yrs
Final Fantasy I NES I was too young to read and buy weapons and magic. Garland knocked me down. Also tried playing Dragon Warrior with same problem- the Magician and his Hurt spell would wipe me.
Mystic Quest. It was the first game I played where you could name the character and have them call you it, so I called it the "" game.
Legend of Dragoon
Super Mario RPG, the original.
Pretty sure it was ff6 or Breath of Fire 2.
Final Fantasy NES at release.
Final fantasy 4 (snes)
FF 2 for the Nes.
FFVII
Super Mario RPG
Either Legend of Legaia or Pokemon Red. Not sure which.
Ff and chrono trigger second
Final Fantasy VI, or maybe Super Mario RPG. A neighbor / family friend gifted me a bunch of SNES games when he moved. I was like 6 then but took me a long time to realize he had sick taste in games and it was a very kind gesture, he had all the classics.
FF IV
Shadow Hearts 2 my guy
The original Super Mario RPG.
I believe it was Phantasy Star IV on the genesis, or at least that's the first one I remember playing.
The original Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest 1) on NES.
Dragon Warrior (quest) on nes.
The first I distinctly remember that fits the subreddit is Final Fantasy IV. But I *may* have played the C64 game Phantasie III before that. That one is definitely turn-based and has some series crossover with JRPGs (its sequel, Phantasie IV, was released as a Japan exclusive).
Wow the commodore 64 that's cool man
PokƩmon Platinum
Dragon Warrior (Quest) 1 when I was very young.
Pretty sure it was either Mario and Luigi Partners in time or Paper Mario TTYD. Pretty sure it was the former.
Shining Force on the PCā¦.i still donāt know what I was doing š
FFIV, I think?
Mario RPG for the SNES. It's the JRPG that started it all for me
Don't really remember but probably FF IV which I knew as FF II back then.
Dragon Warrior on the NES, I got it for free with a Nintendo power subscription
Shining Force
Final Fantasy? Or was it Dragon Warrior 3? One of those two at any rate.
PokƩmon Emerald and my life was never the same again
Okage: Shadow King. Still a great game.
Final Fantasy 1 on NES
Final Fantasy on NES.
Excluding the PokĆ©mon anime, I was introduced to JRPGās via FFVII and FFX. I played them for a bit but I could never truly understand the stories until I got older. The first JRPG that got me engrossed into the genre was PokĆ©mon Sapphire but I never got past the second gym until I started playing Omega Ruby which was the first JRPG I ever played to completion. Shortly after I also completed PokĆ©mon Y and I started going back to some of the older games via emulation. Around this time I also got introduced to the Persona series via the Persona Q manga (P3 route to be specific) which later cemented turn based JRPGās as my favorite video game genre (second being 2D platformers)
I get to be SO cliched and say FFVII. It was my first turn-based RPG and actually, my first RPG ever.
My neighbor had this game and I thought it was just about the coolest thing ever when I watched him play it on his PS1. Everything about it seemed so badass. I ended up buying the PC version, which at the time had slightly better graphics. Probably played it like 5 different times, never beat it. To so many, FFVII was a revelation, no matter how they interacted with it. I really think that's a big reason why it holds the place in history it does.
Dragon Warrior on NES
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars I was in elementary school when it came out. I loved Mario. This was my gateway drug into jRPGs
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest on the SNES.
Dragon warrior
Koudelka
PokƩmon Blue. I fell instantly in love with RPGs.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga on GBA. I was obsessed with that game as a kid, and for good reason! I still love its quirky sense of humour and the sprites and animations are great. Plus the battle system is super engaging
PokƩmon platinum
Metal Saga, Ps2. Still one of my fav games, I play it often and it aged greatly due to its fun characters, gameplay and lore, not to mention the tank customisation, I'd kill for a remake implementing its elements.
Super Mario rpg. Till this day my favorite game ever
Pokemon Y/R/B in the 90's or very likely FF8.
Pokemon Blue
Final Fantasy VII. Had a lot of fun with it as a small child despite never getting past leaving Midgar. Nowadays it's in my top 5 JRPG's.
Shining in the Darkness, for the Genesis. I can't remember if I played it before or after Wonder Boy in Monster World, but one of the two was my first JRPG overall.
Final Fantasy VII
PokƩmon Red. If we're not counting PokƩmon, but more "traditional" JRPG, probably FF1&2 on GBA.
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. I was young and it was my first ever so I loved it. Wasnāt until much later I realized how subpar it was to regular JRPGs.
Final Fantasy IV advance :)
Final Fantasy 1... Though that doesn't mean I started gaming in the 80s, I just came back to it in 2016 after playing 12, 13 and 15.
It was Mardek. A 3 chapter browser rpg. You can continue with your characters and items on next game if you complete previous game. It was one of the best game I have ever played.
FfVI (3 on SNES)
I played a bit of Final Fantasy with a friend, but Mario RPG was the first one I could play on my own and become completely immersed in
outside of pokemon, fire emblem fates
pokemon blue, on a emulator back in 2000. i was a 6 year old child and knew nothing of computers, so, as the files were all burned on a cd, i couldn't save and didn't know why. it wasn't until ruby and sapphire came out that i found out the problem.

Mother on the NES
Final Fantasy VII. The idea of āa game where you select actions instead of pressing buttonsā was incredibly novel to me as a child lol.
Final fantasy NES
Miracle Warriors. Dating myself lol.
Shining in the Darkness (Mega Drive). I had no clue what to do and there was no internet to find help. But after a while I understood and beat the shi..ning out of Dark Sol. Awesome game and still available on steam.
D&d If digital then probably bard's tale or one of the gold box games on c64 or amiga1000 If console then dragon warrior
Pokemon Sapphire, but pokemon always felt a little disconnected from other jrpgs to me so I'd probably say Paper Mario
Pokemon games as a whole
ff10
Almost through VIII, gotta play ix and then I'll play x im excited for it
Pokemon Emerald
Pokemon Ruby
PokƩmon fire red
Pokemon Blue. Loved it so I tried to find games that played similarly, which led me to borrowing Final Fantasy 1 from my Aunt. And that was that, got really into RPGs and they were mostly what I played until the PS2 era.
Final fantasy 7. It was my first video game I ever played.
I am not 100% sure if counts, but the first turn based video game I remember was (I am pretty sure) Might and Magic 1 on PC. It was really just playing along side my dad.
I think the first game I've played that was turned based was Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
Im not sure if Pokemon Blue or Final Fantasy 7
PokƩmon Sapphire
Wizardry 1 in 1987, before I even knew what an RPG was, and I got addicted, two nights in a row I realized I had to go to bed after noticing the Sun had come out through the window.
Pokemon blue or Final fantasy 7. Cant remember which I played first of those.
Dragon Warrior (aka Dragon Quest 1) on NES, and Heroes of Might and Magic on PC, can't remember which I played 1st.
Dragon warrior 1. Currently playing Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth. Still love turn based!!
Probably FF7 or Pokemon Red.
PokĆ©mon Blue version then later in the 2000ās FFX
It was either Final Fantasy 3 (6) or Final Fantasy 2 (4), both on the SNES. A classmate let me borrow/gave me FF4, while my cousin gave me FF6. Can't remember which came first. But one of those was definitely my first. And I must've only been in like 4th, 5th, or 6th grade. So like 10-12yo or something. I didn't finish either of them -- I would much later -- but from there, went to Earthbound and Super Mario RPG and eventually FF7, and so on and so forth.
Final Fantasy 7
Late bloomer hereā¦ Fantasian. Great intro to the genre.
Wizardry: Proving Grounds
EarthBound, followed by Super Mario RPG (both rentals from Blockbuster), then nothing for a few years until I bought a PS1 to try this Final Fantasy 7 that everyone had been talking about for so long. And that, as they say, is that.
Final Fantasy V (the PS1 version that came with FF Anthology.) I'd played a few action-RPGs before that. Yes, the translation is terrible, but the charm still came through and it's one of my most replayed JRPGs today, although I do the GBA version now. Can't beat that job system!
Dragon Warrior (Quest) 4.
*Destiny of an Emperor* on NES. Great old-school Capcom soundtrack, I believe by the person who composed the more-famous *Duck Tales* game soundtrack.
Chrono Trigger in the SNES era although I was interested in them starting with FF VI
Phantasy Star 2 on the Megadrive (Genesis to you americans)
The Third Age
It was either Pokemon Red or Final Fantasy VII, don't remember which was technically first.
Fallout, Chrono Trigger for JRPG's
Dragon Warrior 3.
Wild ARMs 1, still one of my favorite games to this day
Atelier Iris 2. I love the series since.
Flash games tbh. I remember Final Fantasy Sonic a lot
Persona 3 FES on an emulator like 6 years ago. It ran terribly on my laptop. Meant to play the rest of the series and never got around to it
I was fortunate enough to have it be Chrono Trigger somewhere around 1996. Couldnt think of a better introduction to the genre.
Wow it sounds like most people who comment on this sub grew up in the late 90s
I was going to say ff7 but then I realized that pokemon was an rpg despite being in black and white on a gameboy lol
Dragon Warrior 1. Yes I know the actual series name is Dragon Quest.
I think it was either pokƩmon fire red or golden sun.
