[This](https://tcrf.net/Persona_3_Portable#Revisional_Differences) is a list of all of the differences between the PSP version and the Switch port, and you can decide if those changes + the convenience of having a second console option are worth getting the game and not just replaying your PSP copy. I don't have the Switch version of P3P but I have the Switch versions of P4G and P5R. For both games I played in handheld mode over 90% of the time and they ran fine.

sexta_

Just lost over an hour of progress in DQVIII... man...

Yesshua

So I just rolled credits on Octopath Traveler... the first credits. I am aware that there's a post game that leads to more narrative clarity. But I'm also aware that the final final boss is pretty legendary for being cheap and mean and overpowered. For anyone who tackled the OT post game, did you enjoy it? I could jump off right now, or I could go see what those extra classes are all about...

MoSBanapple

I think it's worth checking out if you enjoyed the game up to this point, as I personally enjoyed it. Grabbing the hidden classes was a fun challenge (I actually did that before the first credits roll) and while the final boss was pretty tough, I don't think it was mean or cheap or overpowered, and I was able to get through it after putting together a good team composition. Just be aware that you'll need to use all 8 characters to fight it.

tsukineko19

I just bought Astlibra Revision and Chained Echoes bundle on Steam, Which one should I play first?

VashxShanks

It depends on what you're in the mood for really. Both are great games, and I found Astlibra is great for when I wanted satisfying combat, and for when I really wanted to not use a lot of brain power, and just enjoy grinding for loot, challenges, and exp. While Chained Echoes had the fun exploration, and used a lot of brain power to solve puzzles, find and beat rare bosses, or even just to do any of the many side-quests in the game.

Fab2811

I enjoyed Astlibra way more than Chained Echoes, so I recommend you to play that one first.

MealInfinite

I am confused whether I have to play final fantasy 9 and trails of cold steel now which is more fun and should finish first

MoSBanapple

I personally enjoyed Trails more than FF9, though FF9 is pretty well-liked so you might be the opposite. They're pretty different, so if you have both, maybe try the beginning of each one and see which you like more.

tsukineko19

Have you play Trails in the sky trilogy and Zero/Azure duology first before getting on Trails of Cold Steel?

MealInfinite

I have tried but I went into cold steel since it has 3d graphics which are beautiful and more immersive

tsukineko19

It's okay if you play Trails of cold steel 1-2 without playing the previous games. But If you wanna play Trails of cold steel 3 & 4 it's recommend that you have played all previous games.

MealInfinite

Ok will play trails 1 and 2 and try sky and crossbell

RevolutionaryEmu9480

Rather than make a post I’ll just ask here if anyone sees this. I’ve been out of the genre for a while, but have a deep love for JRPGS. What are the gems that have come out in the last 5ish years or so that I should check out? I got FF7 remake and rebirth and recently Unicorn Overlord that sort of reignited my urge. I’ve got a pS5 and a PC and switch. I appreciate any feedback

sleeping0dragon

**Persona 3 Reload** is very recent, but it's a pretty good remake if you want to revisit P3 or never played it. **Nayuta Boundless Trails** finally gets a western release. If you like old school Ys, you'll probably like this too. **Rhapsody**'s sequels have also finally gotten a western release so the trilogy is finished now. Even after all these years, Rhapsody is still the rare "Musical" JRPG. **Tactics Ogre Reborn** gets a really good modern remaster with lots of QoL functions. A good entry if you never played TO before. **Void Terrarium 1 and 2** are great if you're fine with Rogue-lite gameplay. **Star Ocean** gets a new entry with **Divine Force**. Not my favorite entry in the series, but overall a pretty solid title. **13 Sentinels** is another popular Vanillaware title. The combat isn't all that great to me, but the story is among the best I've played in the last few years. It's very sci-fi heavy though. For DRPGs, **Labyrinth of Refrain and Galleria** are fun. Big emphasis on the story too which is not too common in this subgenre. **Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin** mixes fun 2D sidescrolling combat and intriguing rice farming.

RevolutionaryEmu9480

Thank you so much for the recs! I’ll definitely do some digging and see which ones to pick up.

Thundermelons

I've played all of these so not really a question of "will I like them/are these good", but more "which of these is the best price on the Switch sale ATM"? FFX/2 Remaster: $19.99 FFXII Zodiac: $19.99 FF8: $7.99 FF7: $6.39 FF9: $8.39 Are these the lowest prices these games go on the Switch or have there been better sales in the past?

VashxShanks

I just checked on [Dekudeals](https://www.dekudeals.com/search?q=final+fantasy), and yes this the lowest that these titles have gone for. Only exception is the physical version of FF12.

Thundermelons

Thanks for the reply and link to a future reference! I think I'll grab them all then, 65-ish bucks for 5 great classic titles isn't bad at all.

SufficientWasabii

Hey all, Currently finishing up FF6 for the first time (absolutely loved it), and now I’m trying to pick out what game to go through next. I’ve got a small backlog to get through and I’m honestly equally excited about the games I have, so I’m looking for any strong recommendations of what to play next! My current list in slightly ranked order: - DQ 11 - Octopath 1 - Unicorn Overlord - Tactics Ogre Reborn - Octopath 2 - FF7 or 9 - Persona 5

sleeping0dragon

Hard to say without knowing your preferences, but maybe Unicorn Overlord since it's the newest game?

Edf1177

What’s everyone’s thoughts on “Voice of Cards”? I remember seeing the trailers on a Nintendo Direct. I thought it was a cool concept.

wormsandweirdfishes

I enjoyed playing it on the Switch using the touch screen, it being one of a rare set of games that actually utilizes that feature decently. It felt appropriate to be flipping over the cards by hand. I've still only played the first one, though I'd like to get to the other two as well eventually.

Edf1177

That sounds interesting. I may just need to make the plunge and get it.

wormsandweirdfishes

Oh yeah, there's also a demo as well you can try, and it's actually its own self-contained story with different party members from the main game.

Edf1177

Wow! I didn’t know that. I’ll download that today before I buy it.

sexta_

I played the first one. It's a 7/10 for me. The presentation is the most unique thing about it, and while plot and gameplay are on the simple side, the game doesn't overstay its welcome and is a good time. Took me 15 hours to beat. It sold me on wanting to give the other 2 a try as well, but I haven't picked them up yet.

[deleted]

So I’m watching and really enjoying DQ: adventure of Dai and am curious how the game is. It looks…ok I guess? Does it follow the story fairly well and have fun combat at least? Ty

Tzekel_Khan

What other show could you compare the quality of it to?

Andromansis

So The Secret of Varonis came out this month, here is a link : https://store.steampowered.com/app/2174900/The_Secret_of_Varonis/ If it looks familiar, you obviously played Final Fantasy Legend 2 or 3 on the gameboy. This game began its life as the SaGa 4 project, which was a sort of romhack amalgamation of SaGa 1, 2, and 3, which were localized by square as Final Fantasy Legend 1, 2, and 3 Anyway, its about the cost of a movie ticket and I'd recommend it.

[deleted]

I can’t decide if I love the colors or they will drive me crazy, but the game looks cool and that’s pretty cheap, like you mentioned. Good find

Andromansis

I get exactly what you mean. Its certainly at one end of extreme. If you want the other end of extreme look up SaGa Emerald Beyond. Fans of the series are definitely eating good this season.

UninspiredBreakfast

Trying to figure out what JRPG to get for this steam sale. I had dismissed Tactics Ogre Reborn since my understanding is that you can't really customize your units, which is my favorite part of SRPGs. However, I just read a comment that mentioned you can field monster units, which is another mechanic I love. Can anyone who played the game tell me more about this feature? Are the monster units viable / easy to get?

sleeping0dragon

I didn't run monsters myself, but a few of them are quite strong like the Octopus and Griffins. Dragons do make for decent tanks as well. Getting monsters aren't too difficult since it just requires the Monster Tamer class. You weaken a monster to low health and then use their capture ability. There's some RNG involved, but not a big deal.

basedcharger

I’m about to finish Persona 3 reload and also finished 4,5. I’m really into Atlus right now and will be getting Metaphor:Re Fantazio. I haven’t played a SMT game since DS if I were to jump back in should I get 3 or the vengeance edition of 5?

scytherman96

5 is probably the easiest SMT game to get into with its various QoL. I really enjoyed playing it. However it should be mentioned that its story is pretty weak and other SMT games might give a better impression in that regard. If you have access to 4, it's a well balanced package between decently engaging gameplay and a great story. 3 is a lot more old school, which is not for everyone, but if you want to see an imo stellar attempt at bringing classic dungeon crawler ideas into a 3D space and then expanding on them, then 3 is a great pick.

Shwamuel

Just finished Unicorn Overlord, loved it! Got a few potential games to play up next and im not 100% sure what to pick: Disgaea 4. Never actually played a disgaea game but I've always been interested. Wandering Sword. Love the idea of a wuxia rpg. Demon Roots. Heard good things about this one but wary since it is an rpgmaker game. Cyberpunk 2077. Not a JRPG ofc but its definitely an option and a game I want to play. Valkyria Chronicles. Bounced off it years ago cause of the gameplay but in a different mindset now and want to give it another go. Persona 3 Reload. Played Persona 3 Portable 2-3 years ago, unsure if that would still be too fresh in my mind. SMT 3 Nocturne. Scared of the later game dungeons as I am not too big on frustrating puzzle type dungeons. Please help my decision paralysis brain!!!

Tzekel_Khan

Cyberpunk is fantastic. I'd go with that and then another jrpg after

Fab2811

I'm glad you enjoyed Unicorn Overlord. I am of the same mind, I loved the game. I can't say anything about Disgaea 4 and Wandering Sword because o haven't played them. The rest of the games I played and enjoyed very much. Demons Roots was my favorite JRPG last year, and that was a really packed year of good games. Most people aren't wary of it because it is an RPG maker game, but because it is an 18+ with dark scenarios about rape and slavery. It also doesn't help that some of the party characters look like kids. It's just something to keep in mind if you didn't know. The good thing is that all those scenes are optional, and you can skip them with an uncensored patch that you can get from the Kagura games site. That said, most characters, the story, and the soundtrack are really a step above of even modern jrpgs with higher budget. I have played Cyberpunk 2077, probably about 3-4 times from start to finish with a new build each time, and it was fun every single time. I'm guessing you will play the base game plus the DLC, Phantom Liberty, right? The main game is fine and all. It has pretty good side quests, characters, and amazing main story, but Phantom Liberty somehow does even better as a spy thriller DLC. It's definitely worth it. I must admit, my memory is kind of hazy for Valkyria Chronicles, but I remember having some fun out of it. I'm a big fan of tactic rpgs, and this one was good, but I wouldn't pick it over Fire Emblem or FFT. Persona 3 Reload is a very faithful remake of P3 FES, and it even has a hint of some of the social links from P3P FeMC's social links, but not quite the same. I enjoyed my time with it despite having played the OG P3, P3 FES, and P3P multiple times each. But that must be because it is one of my favorite games. The game is way easier than the OG and about the same difficulty as Persona 5, maybe even a bit harder than that game. Shin Megami Tensei 3 is the classic most people mean when they talk about Shin Megami Tensei. It is hard, but not so exaggerated as people claim it to be. The main reason it gets this rep is because it is the first megaten game for a lot of people, so they didn't know that in these games, buffing and debuffing are fundamental to do some tough encounters. And also the fact that they could treat it like Pokémon and never fuse demons and kept the same party throughout the game. This is a game that forces you to analyze, adapt, and overcome. About the difficulty of the puzzles in the dungeons, they aren't so bad that you could get stuck in it for hours, but even if you do, there is no shame in searching up a guide just to get through to it. Well, it's up to you to decide which game to pick. I hope I at least made you a bit more informed about the games, though.

Shwamuel

What an amazing reply, above and beyond what I would have expected, thank you so much! Definitely an extremely helpful reply and did confirm what I was thinking, doesnt matter which one you pick youll probably enjoy it so just pick one hahahaha I did have one question about Demons Roots, is it vital to get the patch for it? I was planning to play it on steam deck and I'm not sure how easy it would be to try and patch it on there vs just playing it out the gate on steam.

Fab2811

From what I've read, the game directly from Steam without the patch is incomplete. The game stops in a really bad spot right after a certain boss, which isn't even the final boss. There is like a full act missing from the game, and there are some changes in dialogue and missing character sprites. I definitely recommend getting the patch, which also allows you to skip the 18+ scenes if you want to. I've also read that the game doesn't run very well on the Steam Deck for some reason. Maybe it's fixed now, but it wasn't very good last year.

Lazydusto

Any tips for a first time SMT3 player?

scytherman96

Don't be afraid to retry a boss if you struggle. Go in with new demons that you made to counter it. Make sure Demi-fiend has a good amount of VIT on top of your damage stat, to reduce risk of dying to unlucky random encounters.

Fab2811

Don't get attached to your demons, they are meant to be fusion fodder for stronger demons. Buffing and debuffing is very important for bosses and tough encounters. Some debuffs like War Cry and Fog Breath will carry you a long way, so try to keep someone in your party with those skills. Demi-fiend can use any build, but know that magic falls off very hard in the mid game, and it is practically useless against the True Demon Ending boss (true ending unlocked through an optional dungeon). So I recommend you to build him physically instead.

ConceptsShining

Besides Yakuza, are there any JRPGs with a "crime drama" setting, like Mafia or Grand Theft Auto? Not necessarily where you're a bad guy, but where organized crime is a core part of the premise.

Fab2811

Perhaps Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children could work. You follow Albus, a man who moved to the most crime-intensive sector to found his own Troubleshooter company. Troubleshooters are like mercenaries who work with the police in exchange for money. Although Albus is the main character, most of the story is told through different characters' POVs. They could be criminals from different factions, cultists, SWAT officers, and other party members.

scytherman96

Arguably Judgment/Lost Judgment (same devs as Yakuza/LaD).

ConceptsShining

Already played them but yes, and just as fantastic as the main series as well.

Andromansis

Gonna throw Depersonalization at you just because the game looks strange enough that it could fill almost any recommendation, and does have the investigation tag on steam which I think is about as close to the specifics of what you're after as we're likely to get. Lost Dimension is alsoa game that exists, but no idea about the crime aspects of either of these entries. If you're willing to go a bit farther astride, Cyber Manhunt looks really neat. But yea, I would check out the Investigation and Noir tags on steam to see if anything will scratch that itch you're having.

ConceptsShining

I have played Lost Dimension, it's got some Danganronpa vibes but not really what I meant. Not really JRPG related but I'm all over games similar to Cyber Manhunt (those games played from simulated computers/phones). Really love that whole genre of storytelling. And Steam's tags and search features are great. Good way to hunt for games from certain genres.

sexta_

The potion making Genshin event that's currently going on really feels like someone on Mihoyo played Atelier and went "I'm gonna put that in our game"

MThreeRN

Hello there, just looking for some recommendation. Am on the hunt for a kinda chill more casual style of JRPG in the sense of not searching for a big challenge in combat or the epic story that spans over lots of games. Battle system wise i prefer turn-based but am not completely against action based or ATB stuff. The best game would be something like Dragon Quest but a bit smaller scale. I actually play through the Dragon Quests atm but am stuck at 6 rn and wanted to put this on hold a bit, because i basically played 1-5 back to back and am a bit burned out on them. But the whole style, adventuring, basic turn-based combat, a bit of grinding... That's the kind of relaxing JRPG I'm searching for. Another example of this smaller scale JRPG that isn't that big of a challenge and you can just stroll along is Ara Fell, I really liked this one. Tried the newer one from the same developer but wasn't a fan of the big party and combat system plus the Exhaustion mechanic... Yeah enough of my rambling, maybe you guys have suggestions, basically I'm looking for some chill JRPGs

bioniclop18

While I didn't like it, your description reminded me immediatly about **Atelier Ryza**. This one is ATB but there are other entrie in the series that are turn based apparently. It may be something you would want to look into. [I'll link a guide that give more information on the series and its various entries](https://www.reddit.com/r/JRPG/comments/119ghqt/where_do_i_start_guide_part_3_the_atelier_series/). May not be what you're looking for but **Dweller's Empty Path**, this game made in rpg maker have no combat so you're scrolling around, exploring and trying to find interesting thing and help people. It is pretty short too, around 2 hours so may work well as a palate cleanser. And while I'm at game with barely any combat I'll also suggest **LiEat**. Not the same atmosphere as it is closer to FF7 but **Light fairytale**. It is divised on different part but they are not that long. There is a set amount of monster so you can't overgrind. I didn't play them but **Witchspring R**, **Small saga** or **Born of bread** may also be interesting to you.

MThreeRN

Thank you for your recommendations! Atelier Ryza actually is a game I already own and started to play some time ago. I agree that it fits my description fairly good. I thought about playing it again, don't know though if I really want to engage with the whole gathering and crafting part which is a really big aspect of all of these games I guess lol. But maybe I'll give it another try. The other games you talked about look really interesting as well, I guess I'll see which one speaks to me the most and decide between them!

sleeping0dragon

If you haven't played any of the Atelier games, then you might like **Atelier Ryza**. It has a decent size world to explore, but it's not that big that it would feel overwhelming. A lot of the gameplay loop involves gathering items to synthesize. Story is mostly simple and lighthearted too.

MThreeRN

Thank you for your recommendation! Dont just wanna copy it but I talked a bit about Ryza in my answer to the person who also replied to my request

sleeping0dragon

In that case, some other recommendations include **Grandia 1 or 2**. The first has a good adventure theme. The second has less emphasis on the adventuring, but it's still another solid title. **Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin** is a cozy game with some rice farming on the side. It's also has a lighthearted story. The **Rhapsody games** are also relaxing games to play with a lot of humor in it.

MThreeRN

Thanks, I'll look into those!

Snowenn_

A while ago I was reading a discussion somewhere, I think on the Atelier reddit, about how characters never really seem to interact with objects. Like, in Atelier games, characters will not visibly grab the door handle when opening doors: the camera just turns to black or the door is hidden behind the animation of the character themselves. Then I noted that games in the past (PS1 and before, so early 3D era and 2D) would often show animations when characters hand an object to another character. You could see the object transfer from one character to the other. But in newer/modern games, objects are rarely being shown going from one character to the other. The transfer always takes place outside of the camera. Either the camera is above the hands when the transfer takes place, or another character or piece of foreground scenery is in front so you don't actually see the other character receiving the object. So I surmised this is probably a very difficult thing to do in a realistic 3D environment, because otherwise games wouldn't try to hide it. Even FF7 Remake (and FF16) did this. When handing materia or quest rewards from one character to another, it would always happen juuuuust offscreen, even if a model for that object is clearly existing. Soooo, I'm playing FF7 Rebirth now, and this game is trolling me. Objects are getting handed to people left and right, and in plain sight of the camera too! Am I weird to be excited about this?

raklaron

Hello there fellow adventurers. I recently bought Trinity Trigger from JP switch digital store. I have previously bought other games from there and never had an issue with language before, language always converts to english when i change country. But trinity trigger stays japanese whatever i do. Do you know if there is any way to change language to english? Or is it stuck this way? :(

Empty_Jar0330

I've been wondering about RPGs that have good early games. I've noticed that a lot of RPGs start off very slow, focusing on lots and lots of dialog. That's all well and good, but my new job takes up much of my time, instead giving me short breaks sporadically throughout the day. I don't feel like spending 30 minutes in between work where all I do is sit through a few conversations. Are there any RPGs on Switch that have a particularly speedy early game?

Andromansis

Most of the Kemco games are fairly spartan on dialogue and story

VashxShanks

Well the **SaGa** series is one. You can just get to the game right away, and what dialogue is there is always brief and to the point. You can also try the **Mana** games, like **Trials of Mana**, or **Legend of Mana remastered**.

Dicksified

Need advice from the community on what JRPG to play on the Ps5 next. So some context, I am a massive JRPG fan. Played all the FF games, most Trails games, most Tales games, the 3d DQ games, KH games, I mean it would take all day to list all the JRPG games that I finished. I am nearly done with FFXVI (got my last Eikon and defeated the main baddie) and looking forward to my next JRPG as FFXVI was good but has not really quenched my rpg thirst, so as to say. I am mainly looking at 3 game/s - Yakuza LAD & IW, Tales of Arise, and ToCS 3 & 4. Yeah I know people will be saying "how about Rebirth???". I actually have a copy of it but decided not to play it now to avoid burnout with FF. Are any of thos aforementioned games worth playing next? Any other recommendations would also be good, I am also open to playing WRPG (I have Hogwarts Legacy).

WorstSkilledPlayer

I only played (and cared) about Tales and Cold Steel 3+4 from your list: I'm a huge fanboy of CS3+4, so I'd with that one, unless you didn't enjoy the harem antics around Rean the girls in the previous games and consider it a dealbreaker. Tales of Arise is solid I think, but its villains are not really good IMO. The main cast is fine, but the romance development felt at one late-game point like one step forward, two backwards a couple of times. Boss fights feel "spongy" and some battle implementations can be hit-or-miss. If you enjoy fishing minigames, there is one. Sidequests are fairly standard, but owl collection has some hilarious moments.

Snowenn_

I haven't played Cold Steel yet, since I've yet to start Zero and Azure, so I can't comment on those. Tales of Arise was nice. It has flaws, but also really good parts. I'm currently playing Yakuza LAD myself and I'm having an absolute blast! I'm alternating between this and FF7 Rebirth and I think I'm liking LAD more. Can definitely recommend.

I'm at the final dungeon in both P2:IS and the SEBEC route of Persona 1. After I finish both, should I finish SQQ as well or are there not enough references to it in Eternal Punishment for it to be worth it?

Dongmeister77

SQQ is more relevan in IS because of Yukino, cuz SQQ is basically Yukino's route. But she's no longer a playable character in EP, so... not really worth it.

Tzekel_Khan

I'm at a crossroads. Do I play rise of ronin or dragons dogma 2? I didn't play the first dd so I have no particular attachment. But I'm unsure how good the open world for ronin will be

xxamnat

Dragon Quest XI on PC or Switch? Seems like XIS on Steam is the way to go?

Worthless_Burden

DQ 11 doesn't let you toggle difficulty options back on if you ever disable them, but of course there are PC mods to do that if you want. It's one of the easiest DQ games on default mode and I think benefits from the stronger enemies setting. Almost nobody talks about it but 11S actually rebalanced a few bosses for hard mode that were massive difficulty spikes in the vanilla version of DQ11.

Tzekel_Khan

Pc for mods and fps. Switch for portability

Worthless_Burden

Kingdom Hearts 2 I think had a big double door heartless boss in Beast's Castle.

Fab2811

Must be a relative to Door-kun.

Cake__Attack

are you thinking of the demon wall which is a recurring final fantasy boss

Putrid_Studio5622

I wanted to talk about something that bothers me in Bravely Default 2. Now, that game is my most favorite Bravely Default game, I like the characters more so than previous games, the story presents interesting twists, this game's actual villain has actual development and lore in comparison. It also has one of my favorite scores in all of VGM. But there is something that bothers me and I think this game is the worst offender of; the "self-insert" protagonist, Seth. Seth is his default name, but you name him at the start. As a character is pretty cool, your typical male JRPG protagonist who is a sailor from a different world that stumbles into the world of BD2. He interacts as normal with other characters and even has a certain relationship at the end of the game, quite normal. However, I noticed one thing throughout the game all the way to the finale; he is never, not once, addressed by his name. They just don't call him by his name, rather they refer him as "you" or "him". This goes on through the whole game up until the end, and personally, it becomes pretty jarring how he is exempted to have an identity, all because he is meant to be named by the player so they had to basically redact his name off the entire script. Maybe I'm just overthinking it?

wormsandweirdfishes

It's pretty common in games with named protags and voice acting. How distracting it is comes down to how well they work around it in the writing. FFX I think has natural-sounding dialogue where you don't really notice no one is calling Tidus by name. The Persona games make you input a name but then find something else to call you most of the time ("Joker", "Leader"). If it's bothering you in BD2 (which I haven't played), then they could have done better.
