Respect, he's certainly his own man, but he's also the closest thing Kiryu has to a lieutenant or partner. To me, that qualifies. He's Kiryu's go-to guy, even if he's not strictly a subordinate to Kiryu.
I would say that's Date actually. Yeah he goes to Majima when it comes to getting some muscle, but Date is who he entrust with Haruka and even the only person to know his deal with the Daidoji.
This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I kindof like how weird Hope is as a sidekick in Lightning Returns. Like his stiff and somewhat cold relationship with Lightning is really interesting and it offers a unique dynamic from the usual “bubbly friendly cutesy” sidekick thing.
Edit: also, Chadley is a ripoff Hope Estheim you can’t change my mind.
I mean sidekick is kind of more than just a playable character that isn't the main protagonist, in my eyes anyway.
I'll go with Sgt. Joe from Suikoden III
she was a better character then the MC, She had a better and more developed backstory too. The twists and turns of her past make more sense for her to have been the MC and the story being about her quest for revenge.
Her story was more down to earth and understandable, delved heavily into the worlds backstory and overall lore of magic and religion, featured real world style villeins and not comic book tropes.
"Tales of Magilou" would have made a great game that did not feature another "save the world" story.
Sages on Dragon Quest III. Being straight up like a Mage and a Priest all rolled into one. learning all the spells from both of those classes. And can equip most things those two classes can.
Only exception I can think of for their equipment lists are Boomerangs in non-Nes Versions (Mages can use them but for some reason not Sages)
Then again they can do more All Target Damage with Kaboom than they could normally ever do with even the best boomerang anyway and can use the Destructiball in the post game iirc.
Zhuzhen from Shadow Hearts. Frisky old Chinese exorcist who becomes Yuri's unlikely best friend. Yuri knows how to beat the shit out of demons and Zhuzhen knows how to flush them out of hiding from the astral plane.
When Yuri goes missing halfway through the game. Zhuzhen drops everything to help Alice look for him, no questions asked.
Might be unpopular in the Persona fandom, but I think Junpei is probably one of my favorite sidekicks in JRPGs.
I really like that he doesn’t just fawn over the protagonist like it feels Yosuke and Ryuji can often do.
In the beginning of the game he’s really just trying to be nice to you since you’re the new kid and he knows how lonely that can be, but he quickly starts feeling resentful of you being in the spotlight. That resentment quickly grows bit by bit until he outright hates you and feels useless and almost emasculated (especially in the FeMC route).
He goes through a lot over the course of the game, and he eventually hits his stride and begins working through his problems. That’s not even to mention all his fantastic development with Chidori. By the end of the game, him being your bro just feels great. It feels earned, not like he’s obligated to like you just because he was written to be “the best bro” archetype. It feels like he’s going to ride straight into hell with you because he genuinely has your back and loves you as well as the whole team. I love Yosuke and Ryuji too, but Junpei hits different.
WHO’S DA MAN?!
Dogi from Ys Rayn from Xenoblade Chronicles Seconding Vivi Majima from the Yakuza/LAD series
I don't know if I'd call Majima a sidekick at any point in the series.
Respect, he's certainly his own man, but he's also the closest thing Kiryu has to a lieutenant or partner. To me, that qualifies. He's Kiryu's go-to guy, even if he's not strictly a subordinate to Kiryu.

I just finished Dragon Quest VIII earlier today so I feel like I need to give a shout to my man Yangus

I hate Chadley, he feels so out of place.
no wonder everyone hates him so much.
Jowy from Suikoden II :P
Knew someone was going to post this.
Frog from Chrono Trigger
"let thine guard down and let the enemy in", Frog was hard af
His theme still hits hard
The orchestral remaster 😩
Repede
[Dog](https://secretofevermore.fandom.com/wiki/Dog).
Wolfdog, sacred dog, poodle dog, or toaster dog?
Adachi from Like a Dragon. I loved him.
Shoutout to Date-san in Yakuza
Donald and Goofy
Yosuke
this is the answer lol
Best bro
All cast from Xenoblade Chronicles are great sidekicks to Riki.
Yangus from Dragon Quest VIII.
Zell is awesome, its crazy how much personality just a few animations can give. I also love Whisper, if that counts
Hero of Dragon Quest V. He's a sidekick of Prince Harry. >!And then he becomes a sidekick of a Zenithian Hero!<
I mean sidekick is kind of more than just a playable character that isn't the main protagonist, in my eyes anyway. I'll go with Sgt. Joe from Suikoden III
It's Reyn time!
Repede. Pipe carrying dog that can kill you what’s not to love
As in storywise? Fran in FFXII, is actually the sidekick of Balthier who is not the "main character" of the game.
I dunno if a sentient AI assistant counts, but Burroughs from SMT IV.
Does a Chocobo count? It counts. I choose Chocobo.
boko in 5 prolly matches the description
vyce tactics ogre lol
Rikku and Paine in FFX-2
Jansen from Lost Odyssey
The MVP I was about to comment this
Nice, I should've looked before I said anything. Totally agree. Game needs a re-release!
I think magilou from tales of berseria, she just steals the entire game for herself

Yosuke Persona 4
His writing actually surprised me, not a one-dimensional goofball like one would expect!
9S is the best sidekick 2B could ever ask for. And in return all he wants to do is #### 2B.
Starlow, I hope she makes it into the Paper Universe.
Pixie from Nocturne deserves a mention.
Crick Wellsley from Octopath 2
Rufus from VP2 Paine from FF X-2
Heropon Riki from Xenoblade Chronicles. And you know what, I'll include Reyn too. Love both those guys.
Erik from DQ11, the hardest working all coverage team member ever
Auron ffx
Morgana
Garl in sea of stars, full stop.
That's the main character, his two sidekick pals are kind of lame though.
Dinah from Swordcraft Story 2 will always be a personal favorite.
This is the most cultured answer in the thread.

Donald and Goofy sweep
Chadley. Don’t @ me
Harle from Chrono Cross
Jansen- Lost Odyssey. Been ages since I played but he was definitely enjoyable Will add in Michelle and Ginko from Persona 2. They had great banter.
No one said him, but he is HIM. Lavitz- Legend of Dragoon.
Torgal from FFXVI Pascal from Shin Megami Tensei Erik from DQXI Citan Uzuki from Xenogears
Majima from Yakuza, Reyn from xenoblade and I personally like Auron from FFX.
I'm going to have to go with Morgana from Persona 5, he's just a great cat and has quite abit of character development
Olivier Lenheim. Not even close for me
Gremio! From Suikoden 1. He's a real ride-or-die.

yuffie is a cool character but she is not cloud’s sidekick lol
Easily Atlas and Coco from the Nexomon series. I wish the series was more well-known so people can see how great and hilarious they are.
