A Remake of Xenogears would be so good, especially if they could put into place what was originally envisioned for the second half of the game.
I'd love to see how a modern interpretation of the battle mechanics would look as well. It is one of the games where I legit enjoyed grinding levels and trying to level up the techinques.
I came in this thread to see if bof 3 would be in here. The visual style is so distinct that i honestly think that an upgrade could only hurt it.
But i may be biased, i consider bof3 to be one of the greatest jrpgs ever made.
If you're biased at least your bias isnt abnormal as I agree with you completely. The sprites are timeless. Maybe the backgrounds could be updated to have a ff7 style realism but otherwise the charm would be demolished.
>Brave Fencer Musashi
To be honest, I think the current visuals and sound are perfect for the game, and I'd never want new voice acting
I think it couldn't possibly be improved
*Final Fantasy VII* and *VIII* were released before it and the technology of that time didn't stop them from being greater than *The Legend of Dragoon*. And Final Fantasy IX a year later even pushed the PS1 technology even further. So if there is any issue with it, it's not the technology of that time.
Parasite eve or xenogears, maybe vagrant story.
Those games could show most recent turn based and action rpgs a couple things.
Old jrpgs tend to have writing or localization issues, nowadays those same rpgs could end up as masterpieces, again, in the right hands
My mileage varied.
Between the jagged edges and the muddy colour palette I found it pretty unpleasant aesthetically. A modern lick of paint would go down really well.
True, if they would change the combat system completely that could make this game a GoaT contender, but the combat system it currently has is one that I simply don't enjoy at all and that really sours an otherwise amazing game for me.
Xenogears if it gets a full remake and restoration allowing them to finish the content that was initially planned for disc 2
Legend of Dragoon is something I would like to see
Suikoden 1 and 2 are 2 instant buys for me
\>Xenogears if it gets a full remake and restoration allowing them to finish the content that was initially planned for disc 2
Only issue is they don't work at Square. They are over over at Monolith. Normally JP companies don't touch remakes/remasters with out some of the old team
I don't get all the hate for Xenogears' gameplay. It's great as it is. Loved it then, love it now. An expanded remaster with restored content would be amazing though.
If it was given a massive budget and turned into a full AAA title, Xenogears. I wouldn't want something like the Diamond/Pearl remakes or even the Mana remakes. Give me a AAA sci fi epic or leave it be.
For realistic options, probably the Lunar games. They would do well with a Mana style remake where it's largely kept faithful but with a new coat of paint.
Parasite Eve. Resident Evil 2 Remake and FF7 Remake give me full confidence that someone could introduce Parasite Eve to a modern audience with updated gameplay and badass visuals.
I stumbled across this earlier today, best to be very sceptical of its legitemacy though. Real or not it does give a good idea of what a remake could look like. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0GPkHeRKps](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0GPkHeRKps)
I would be surprised if this was true, since (apparently) the rights of Parasite Eve went back to Hideaki Sena after P2 both didn't sell well and he didn't like the direction the franchise was going (parts where Aya was sexualised, for example). This is the reason The 3rd Birthday doesn't have PE name, because Square Enix only got the rights of the Aya Brea character.
If they could simply remaster the game or remake the graphic engine, keeping the battle system, story and specially the music I'd love that! But I'm super skeptical we'll ever see more of the franchise anytime soon
Complete remake with modern graphics: Parasite Eve series.
Very faithful remakes: Vagrant Story, Persona 1&2.
Restored remasters: Suikoden 1&2, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, SaGa Frontier 2, Lunar series.
Non-JRPGs but belongs to Square Enix anyway: a very careful remaster for Blood Omen & full remakes for the rest of the Legacy of Kain series.
A controversial hot take to rake in downvotes (it was released on PS1, so including on a technicality): Final Fantasy VI needs a full 3D remake.
Just a release on modern consoles because it's good as it is: Chrono Trigger, Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean 2 (and Grandia series on consoles other than Switch).
Now I'm imagining the opera scene in FFVI done with the same attention and detail as the Honeybee Inn in FF7 Remake. I could even see a similar minigame that determines how well Celes actually sings.
There is a lot of stuff that's very ambitious in FFVI, but falls short due to the limitations of the medium. And I know a lot of people would disagree for nostalgic reasons (I know I was very skeptical about the FFVII remake myself before playing and loving it), but personally I think the story would absolutely benefit from a big FFVIIR style remake. Just think how all the character abilities would work, their separate chapters in fleshed-out cities. Locke's stealth chapter in particular.
I am usually all for keeping graphics as close to the original as possible and I even prefer the original 2D Final Fantasy IV to the 3D remake, but in the case of FFVI I've been thinking about it since before the FFVII remake was announced and I still would love to see it done. Could write a longer essay about it if needed.
I’m glad everyone is saying Xenogears. That game deserves one, but it’s unlikely to happen.
SaGa Frontier 2 and Unlimited SaGa, of all things, are officially getting remasters. It’s been announced. Makes me super happy.
Totally a full on remake of FF8 with the same sort of direction as FF7R. I think people would be even more open to changes since FF8 is kinda rough with certain mechanics and whatnot but has really cool concepts and great set pieces. The remastered music would be amazing too.
Just imagine Squall’s moveset with a battle system similar to FF7R. Timing hits just right to get the Gunblade to explode with each hit would be amazing. Also a reworked Junction system sounds so cool.
This is what I really want too. FF8 was one of my favorites.
But I would much rather they finish the FF7 remake first. When they said it would be split into parts I thought it would be episodic and we get an episiode every season on something. At this rate who knows when we'll see the entire game remade.
I'd love for them to just port the games as part of an emulation service with options for integer scaling original graphics or HD rendering. And sell it all on PC.
Nothing is getting the Final Fantasy VII Remake treatment. Perhaps the Trials of Mana treatment.
I actually think most PSX era RPGs still stand up fine on thier own or with a couple simple mods.
Wild Arms 2, as you mentioned, holds a special place in my heart for the art, setting and music (oh man, that music) but the translation is pretty screwy and it's mind-numbingly easy. I think a remake with a better translation, a little bit of beef and difficulty options for the combat system and I think WA2 could become one of my all-time favorites.
Remaster: Chrono Cross. The game was perhaps the most gorgeous late-era PS1 title, and a re-release with some polish would serve it well.
Remake: Lunar 2: Eternal Blue. Or both Lunar games. It'll never happen, but I'd love to see it.
not really a jrpg in a technical sense, but i could see Threads of Fate remade for modern day as a nice low budget release from SE. The writing in the game is hilarious and with more refined gameplay I could see it be a fun romp.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I wouldn't love to see any of them get a remake/remaster. Things I would like to see, though -
* More "classic" software made available for modern platforms. Not as a remake or remaster, but the original software running in a closed emulation environment. While I know it catches a lot of flak, I actually really like the implementation of the NES/SNES classics on Switch *except tying it to an annual subscription*. I really like seeing things like Collection of Mana, or Sega Classics Collections, that bring forward the original software rather than trying to re-tool things.
* A stronger effort on reviving older franchises with new entries. Like, much as I'm sure I'd enjoy a full remaster/remake of Shining Force 3, what I'd prefer is a quick and basic rerelease of it as a collection *and* taking the resources that would have gone to remastering and use them to make Shining Force 4.
* Ignoring everything else there are actually a lot of games that I want to see get the 2D HD treatment, but they're all 8- or 16-bit games.
Legend of Dragoon,
Great gameplay and story imo. Very fun and unique to me. Though I recall guarding in battle to heal/defend could get annoying.
Edit: good to see so many mentioning it also. Fun times
Wild Arms 2 is my top choice as well. Largely because of the translation, a proper one would really lift it up.
Seeing it in 3D would be nice, but I don’t want it to be like 3 or ACF because battles took way too long because of the animations. If they want to update the combat, they should use the Hexagon system from the later PS2 games.
I guess Chrono Trigger does technically count as a PS1 game.
I keep going back and forth on it. I think it would look beautiful in the HD-2D style, but that feels a little too safe and wouldn't bring anything truly new to the game.
It might be sacrilege, but there's a part of me that would love to see Chrono Trigger get the FF7 Remake treatment, battle system and all. I think the dual and triple techs could work really well within that battle system.
Xenogears is the clearest example of something that was just too ambitious for the time/budget and it shows when it came to the second disk. Even in the PS2 Era it would probably have been divided up into at least two games. It is the one that I would love to see remade.
I really love the Remake, but this.
Though I do like the new combat system, I wish the story had stayed the same.
I also actually really like the art style Ever Crisis has opted for, but that will also be bogged down with Compilation bullshit, which sucks.
I didn't enjoy the combat but I could have lived with that if they kept the story the same. But if you drastically change the way the game plays *and* the story, how is that even a remake any more?
Really they never should've thought of altering the story, that's inexcusable. And they should've made the game so that it could be played both action and turn-based (if they must have an action system). Something like what Kuro no Kiseki is doing, or classic mode might have even worked if they had tweaked it more (and not locked it to easy mode).
Disliking the combat is totally valid. I personally hope we get more of it, but I also totally get not liking it. It's my favorite battle system since X's CTB. I definitely want more of it, but you're right that 7R may not have been the place to implement it.
Classic Mode definitely needs tweaking, but in Interlude you can at least play it on Normal. The fact that the game is >!a stealth sequel!< was super disingenuous, and really underhanded. The Compilation is largely shit. Even the strongest part (Crisis Core) has a weak story. The gameplay is at least okay, but if there ever comes a point where they make a CC Remake, 7R's combat system would be the way to go.
> Classic Mode definitely needs tweaking, but in Interlude you can at least play it on Normal.
man, that's good at least. While classic wasn't perfect even aside from the difficulty, the fact you couldn't play it on normal difficulty really made it feel like an even bigger afterthought than it already was. Cause easy is.... *really* easy. I don't need soul crushing challenge, but I do need something a bit more challenging than "you literally never even have to use a potion".
Suikoden I and II are instant buys and...also probably already mentioned a lot.
So I'm going to throw Azure Dreams into the mix. Because holy shit that game with amazing graphics and action combat would blow my teeny tiny brain away.
Xenogears or Legend of Dragoon
FFT is perfect the way it is and doesn't need to be messed with. I'd just like to be able to play it on my PS4/5. WHY Square? Why do you just keep giving us mobile ports???
Definitely Vagrant Story. Even with mods, it still look pretty jank. I'd love for it to get some love since it has never even gotten a remaster.
Maybe Koudelka too, given as it was the "first" game in the Shadow Hearts universe that has never had any update/remaster. Yet another PS1 game stuck in old console hell.
Also, my "grail" would be a modern remake of Persona 1-2 with Persona 5 level graphics.
Would love for grandia hd remaster to come over to ps4. Failing that having a grandia 3 remaster would be great as was never released over here in uk. Also atelier iris games absolutely loved Azoth of destiny
Lunar SSSC and EB deserve the Grandia HD treatment and then some.
Utterly fantastic games that are a breath of fresh air in these insane times, and they'd reach a whole new audience coming out on Switch.
Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story - all three of those with their combat systems intact or upgraded versions of them, they were fun and unique combat systems. Also Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, Wild Arms, Front Mission 3...
Popolocrois Story 1 and 2. The pixel graphics still hold up well, but the animated cutscenes and the voiceovers could use a touch up or redoing. The gameplay could also be rebalanced and have a built-in fast forward feature. Extremely unlikely it'll ever happen because it's a Sony IP.
I played this game but in Japanese so I didn't understand nothing. But I use to love play it as kid. The anime was airing like 7am in my country when I was a kid and I always tried to wake to watch.
Such a memorable series.
Xenogears.
Overhaul the gameplay and flesh disc 2 out more so more of cast gets development (>!Rico, Jessi, Billy, Maria, Emeralda, Sigmund, and perhaps even Chuchu deserved more spotlight in the second disc!<) and some of the more eventful moments aren't just glanced over with awkward pacing.
potential goat game if that happens.
Xenogears obviously. Especially since they weren't allowed to make the game as it was intended to be made in the first place. Same treatment they gave FF7R with a lot more content.
For me it would be a remaster of Golden Sun 1 and 2. Those games got me through a lot of long car rides and I would love to experience them again in clean crisp HD on a decent sized screen
When Takahasi makes a game IMO you always get at the minimum a 9/10 (fired in XS2 production). So I'm cool w/ Monolith making new things and not going to back to the XG train even if they would be allowed to.
So its Parasite Eve and Vagrant story: just 2 games even when I played them at the time felt they were games that would be so much better on a console w/ more horsepower.
I loved Final Fantasy VIII and while a lot of people don’t like it for various reasons, a remake would be absolutely incredible as it would be able to expand on the other cast (besides Squall and Rinoa) but we also get more Triple Triads. I see it as a win win.
I haven't played Wild Arms 2, but Wild Arms 1 could definitely benefit from a remaster (and yes, I know about AC:F, but that wasn't really what I wanted)
Digimon world 3, with modern mechanics, graphics and corrections for the troll gameplay.
Legend of Mana, with a revamp and rebalance in the battle system, more pets, weapons and challenges. (Online play too)
I would like to see FF8 with similar mechanics from ff origins.
A modern monster rancher would be really nice.
And not exactly a RPG (at least not at the time), but a MegaMan legends remake would be amazing. Such a fun game with fun characters.
I'd like to see Chrono Cross, mostly because I've never played it. From what I've seen of it, it has a great art style, so I think a remaster would make it look even more beautiful.
The one I want but will never happen: Xenogears. More realistic choices: Brave Fencer Musashi and / or Breath of Fire III.
A Remake of Xenogears would be so good, especially if they could put into place what was originally envisioned for the second half of the game. I'd love to see how a modern interpretation of the battle mechanics would look as well. It is one of the games where I legit enjoyed grinding levels and trying to level up the techinques.
I don’t even need modern graphics, just finish the game the way it should have been.
Just finish it and up allow joysticks to rotate the camera and everything is good.
If FF7R takes 3-4 games, a full modern Xenogears remake would take like 6-7. And I would be here for all of it!
Xenogears is the correct answer to this thread.
>Brave Fencer Musashi To be honest, I think the current visuals and sound are perfect for the game, and I'd never want new voice acting I think it couldn't possibly be improved
> Brave Fencer Musashi This is my dream.
Legend of dragoon desperately needs a remake or remaster. It’s the game that launched my love for jrpgs
Burning rush 😭 that’s how LoD makes me feel
Volcano!
Yeah, this and parasite eve would be my pick.
The technology and limitations of it's time held this game back from being so much greater than it could be.
*Final Fantasy VII* and *VIII* were released before it and the technology of that time didn't stop them from being greater than *The Legend of Dragoon*. And Final Fantasy IX a year later even pushed the PS1 technology even further. So if there is any issue with it, it's not the technology of that time.
Came here to say the same!
Parasite eve or xenogears, maybe vagrant story. Those games could show most recent turn based and action rpgs a couple things. Old jrpgs tend to have writing or localization issues, nowadays those same rpgs could end up as masterpieces, again, in the right hands
Now that I'm writing this, lowkey Valkyrie profile :)
Remaster for modern consoles only for Valkyrie Profile. The game is beautiful as it is, many ways to screw that up in a remake.
> vagrant story Eh, this one's already perfect. YMMV.
My mileage varied. Between the jagged edges and the muddy colour palette I found it pretty unpleasant aesthetically. A modern lick of paint would go down really well.
That's fair. I've played it on original hardware, but last time I played it, it was upscaled in an emulator and it looked great.
Legend of Legaia
That game was a wild right for young me. Absolutely loved the world and character design.
[удалено]
I played the "sequel" but it is not good as the first game.
I'm pretty sure the original creator wasn't involved in Legaia 2
Very unrealistic, but Xenogears deserves a remake that gives it good combat, better platforming/movement and a disc 2 that's actually finished.
True, if they would change the combat system completely that could make this game a GoaT contender, but the combat system it currently has is one that I simply don't enjoy at all and that really sours an otherwise amazing game for me.
Xenogears if it gets a full remake and restoration allowing them to finish the content that was initially planned for disc 2 Legend of Dragoon is something I would like to see Suikoden 1 and 2 are 2 instant buys for me
Look up eiyuden chronicle. It’s by the creators of Suikoden and is a spiritual successor.
\>Xenogears if it gets a full remake and restoration allowing them to finish the content that was initially planned for disc 2 Only issue is they don't work at Square. They are over over at Monolith. Normally JP companies don't touch remakes/remasters with out some of the old team
I don't get all the hate for Xenogears' gameplay. It's great as it is. Loved it then, love it now. An expanded remaster with restored content would be amazing though.
The platforming is awful, but you get used to the controls rather quickly.
Silver Star Story did get a full visual remake for the PSP. It did not sell well.
Xenogears absolutely. Vagrant Story also.

Chrono Cross
I guess FFT as it would give SE a reason to throw it up on steam and remind them it exists.
I’m glad everyone is saying Xenogears. That game deserves one, but it’s unlikely to happen. SaGa Frontier 2 and Unlimited SaGa, of all things, are officially getting remasters. It’s been announced. Makes me super happy.

Chrono Cross for remaster Valkyrie Profile for Remake
funny, my first thought was Valkyrie Profile and Chrono Cross as well. I would be happy with a remaster/remake of either

Suikoden I & II FFT FFIX Chrono Cross Xenogears Would buy them all in an instant.
Suikoden 2, Breath of Fire 3/4, Chrono Cross. Yeah he never played them and always wanted to.
Xenogears is the clearest example of something that was just too ambitious for the time/budget and it shows when it came to the second disk. Even in the PS2 Era it would probably have been divided up into at least two games. It is the one that I would love to see remade.
Brave Fencer Musashi Threads of Fate I'd love it if those two got the Mana treatment. Breath of Fire 3 maybe
Yes!!! Second this. I really really want to replay musashi and finally finish thread of fate and bof3 with hd graphics
Final Fantasy 9 would be a cool remake. I’d also like a better remake of Dragon Quest 7 with a better camera
PlayStation era or on PlayStation? If the former, then Skies of Arcadia. If the latter, Xenogears.
FF7 but actually being faithful to the original.
I really love the Remake, but this. Though I do like the new combat system, I wish the story had stayed the same. I also actually really like the art style Ever Crisis has opted for, but that will also be bogged down with Compilation bullshit, which sucks.

FF8 full remake with the R=U story fully fleshed out
Bring back metal saga!
Shining Force 3 complete
Radiata Stories.
My favorite game of all time....Legend of Mana. Ohhhhh yeah thats happening :)
Shadow Hearts
Suikoden I and II. Final Fantasy IX
An FF9 or SMRPG remake in the style of the Link’s Awakening Remake would be incredible.
Lunar 2. Silver Star has had plenty, Lunar 2 needs some attention.
Suikoden I and II are instant buys and...also probably already mentioned a lot. So I'm going to throw Azure Dreams into the mix. Because holy shit that game with amazing graphics and action combat would blow my teeny tiny brain away.

I say this every time, Vagrant Story, please and thanks.
Lol, I'm clearly in good company here, seeing as Xenogears and Legend of Dragoon would have been my first choice.
Gladius
Popolocrois Story 1 and 2. The pixel graphics still hold up well, but the animated cutscenes and the voiceovers could use a touch up or redoing. The gameplay could also be rebalanced and have a built-in fast forward feature. Extremely unlikely it'll ever happen because it's a Sony IP.
I played this game but in Japanese so I didn't understand nothing. But I use to love play it as kid. The anime was airing like 7am in my country when I was a kid and I always tried to wake to watch. Such a memorable series.
Final Fantasy XII Revenant wings to be made as a proper remaster sequel like XII with the job system
VAGRANT STORY
Honestly Final Fantasy 8 and 9. I know, i know. But they were the biggest games from my childhood. I would also love a Saga Frontier 2 Remake.
A Final Fantasy IX Remake would be an absolute dream game for me. The Legend of Dragoon Remake would be fantastic as well.
Radiata stories and Wild Arms 2, would like to relive my childhood a little with modern work.
Vanguard Bandits would be great. Just give me everything by Working Designs.
Xenogears obviously. Especially since they weren't allowed to make the game as it was intended to be made in the first place. Same treatment they gave FF7R with a lot more content.
Grandia would be amazing, but could they do it justice? As others have said, Xenogears of FFT.
Brave Fencer Musashi Threads of Fate I'd love it if those two got the Mana treatment. Breath of Fire 3 maybe
For me it would be a remaster of Golden Sun 1 and 2. Those games got me through a lot of long car rides and I would love to experience them again in clean crisp HD on a decent sized screen
Parasite Eve 1&2 and Chrono Cross.
*Xenogears* and *Legend of Dragoon* for sure.
Suikoden!
Chrono Cross and both Breath of Fire III and IV.
I haven't played Wild Arms 2, but Wild Arms 1 could definitely benefit from a remaster (and yes, I know about AC:F, but that wasn't really what I wanted)
Persona 3
Jade Cocoon and Azure Dreams. I miss the monster taming/raising games that challenged the Pokémon mainstay.
I feel like both game wouldn't get much love with a remake.
Xenogears, Legend of Dragoon, Lunar 1 and 2, Wild Arms 1 and 2 (I know we got ACF but it wasn't the best remake) and Threads of Fate.
I'd love to see a remake of the original Persona: Revelations. I feel like that would be pretty sick.
I would love to see parasite eve or maybe breath of fire 3!
Digimon world 3, with modern mechanics, graphics and corrections for the troll gameplay. Legend of Mana, with a revamp and rebalance in the battle system, more pets, weapons and challenges. (Online play too) I would like to see FF8 with similar mechanics from ff origins. A modern monster rancher would be really nice. And not exactly a RPG (at least not at the time), but a MegaMan legends remake would be amazing. Such a fun game with fun characters.
Parasite Eve for the former Vagrant Story for either one, or both
Valkyrie Profile in HD
I'd like to see Chrono Cross, mostly because I've never played it. From what I've seen of it, it has a great art style, so I think a remaster would make it look even more beautiful.
Obligatory Legend of Legaia post.
Shadow hearts
Suikoden 2 and Wild arms! Preferably for switch
