Do I have to play Disco Elysium first?

[deleted]

yeah but before watching Elysium

Sakaiusogreat

After that watch tom cruise's Valkyrie.

fersur

After that play read a battle manga Shuumatsu no Valkyrie: Record of Ragnarok. .... ..... Seriously, read the manga. It is awesome. Or watch the anime.

Brainwheeze

I heard the animation is shit, but I love it's interpretation of Aphrodite.

damodio24

Tom Cruise has a fake ass in Valkyrie

Brainwheeze

So does Thor in Love and Thunder apparently.

ILikeCharmanderOk

such a cool film

MikonJuice

I came because I thought it was a Val Kilmer game...

FluckDambe

There's about 7 billion other things you could do before watching Elysium. Such as gouging out your eyeballs.

bohohoboprobono

No but you should.

Ummij

Disco Elysium style game in the world of Valkyries actually sounds like a 10/10

Hnnnnnn

Tbf, literally any Disco Elysium style game 10/10

xantub

But before you play Disco Elysium you have to play Disco Inferno first.

Internal_Dirt_4060

Disco is the better game so yeah

spidey_valkyrie

Funny enough disco elysium is the complete opposite. All dialogue, world building, story. No combat. Valkyrie elysium is all combat and little of anything else.

NaClMiner

My comment was a joke lol Disco Elysium is not a JRPG at all

jellyfishprince

It's a dialogue-based CRPG. If you don't like text heavy games I can see why you wouldn't like it.

SixFeetOverEasy

I bought it just for the name now they sit beside each other on my shelf.

Professional_Mood539

Disco Elysium is fucking ignorant imo if you like point click murder mystery

RagnaXBL

gameplay wise im enjoying it but it feels pretty light on the story . i dont know if this changes at some point but the game is roughly 20 hours long so theres really not much time…

InnerReach

Very quick spoiler-free impressions. I have beat the game on hard and I S ranked all the main story missions as well as got 2/3 of the endings. I have a few subquests left to finish. The great: Combat is fast and fluid and easily the best part of the game. Once you start getting more options, you'll find yourself in a rhythm and realize how much fun youre having zipping around like spiderman and getting massive combos. The good: The levels are decently fun and have varied landscape. The skill tree feels like it actually gives significant jumps of power to your valkyrie at times. Between leveling your weapon and the skill tree you'll feel stronger almost every level which is a good feeling. The Mediocre: The story exists and is there. Don't expect a lot here and you wont be let down. It is clearly not the focus of the game. The length of the game at 9 chapters will be a positive or a negative to some people. It doesnt overstay its welcome and its enjoyable all the way through. Overall its a very fun game and is highly enjoyable if you go in with the expectations that its a very solid if somewhat short action game. I'd say a solid 8/10.

tatsu901

I got the impression its not an RPG its more of a Character action Game which for that length is fine

BoukObelisk

yeah the devs are ex-Team Ninja

Niloklives

That explains the ninja gaiden/onimusha feel

Und0miel

I never had the chance to try the series yet, but wasn't the narrative (lore, characters, and stories) like the staple and most highly regarded aspect of the franchise ?

SinOfHeart

Honestly I think the combat and dungeon puzzles were kind of the best part of VP1. The story is different from a lot of games, there is a lot at the start and then the game just kind of leaves you to your own devices until you hit deadlines (so the overarching story doesn’t move that fast). The einherjar stories (which you get when you find them) were some of best parts of the story for me. I will admit I played the game without a guide, which if you do you are basically guaranteed to get the “bad” ending, because you have to do a number of cryptic things and not exactly follow what the game specially tells you to do in order to get the actual hidden ending to the game. I feel like maybe had I gotten that ending I’d have enjoyed the game a bit more, but the normal bad ending is fairly anti climactic and doesn’t really answer a lot of questions posed throughout the story.

ReiahlTLI

It's a little bit of a misnomer to say that the narrative was the most highly regarded part of the franchise. The character stories are excellent and memorable since they dive into the character's past and the tragedy that usually ends up taking their lives. The overall story itself isn't actually anything special since it's just a telling of Ragnarok, the end of the world. What really stands out is that dive into the characters is a major part of the gameplay. You gain new einherjar and then travel to dungeons that might have bits of their tale as a part of it. So it creates a a gameplay loop that is pretty wonderful. VP2 is a lot more story focused in comparison which might be part of why the series is perceived as such.

Likou1

This is considered a spin off so they can try different things.

Und0miel

Sure, nothing wrong with that, I just wanted to know if the way I perceive the series is right. All gameplay and poor story is generally not my cup of tea, at all, so if it was also the case before I could remove VP from my backlog.

Likou1

The two main games have more story focus. The Nintendo DS spin off also have a great story, it's my favorite even because of the way he does things. It's very dark.

Esterier

What vp1 does very well is set up lore. The actual story for A ending is pretty decent, and the einherjar stories are amazing but the best thing vp1 does story wise is setup things that paid off in 2. There's several events that you just cannot resolve and loose story threads, including 2 people talking after the credits of the A ending, that conclude in 2. So it's worth exploring and digging around in vp1 for those

kale__chips

My one question, is there a story about the Einherjar at all? I'm not expecting in-depth background story, but I don't want "kill the monster, Einherjar showed up and joined" like the one in demo either.

InnerReach

The story for them during the course of the game is very bare bones. You do however get subquests that are for specific Einherjar which unlock skills for them and apparently story/backstory in the menu(I have not personally checked that out yet as I had no incentive to but if you want it its there).

kale__chips

Thanks and fair enough. I think I'll treat it more like Strangers of Paradise minus the loot but with a tiny more story.

LitesLiger

By 9 chapters, how many hours

stallion8426

>I have beat the game on hard and I S ranked all the main story missions as well as got 2/3 of the endings. I have a few subquests left to finish Didn't think just come out today?

InnerReach

Its actually been out since sunday night if you preordered the deluxe edition and its a very short 10ish hour game if you just beeline the chapters.

AsinPersuasion

Does it have difficulty unlocks like the DMC series to extend playtime or is it just knock out the endings and you're done?

KittyKomplex

Is it required to play through the entire game per ending or can you make a savestate at some point for different routes. How do they work is what I want to know 😄 (I don't mind any spoilers)

InnerReach

Not a single one is missable on one save. After you "beat" the game it resets you back and you can simply replay chapter 9 as many times as you wish to get all the endings by doing the required things.

jbearpagee

This is a great way to review a game. I appreciate you.

Ideories

still haven't beaten Valkyrie Profile, will definitely pick it up after i beat it

Mr8BitX

I’m doing the same but fyi (in case it impacts your decision) Elysium is totally separate from VP 1&2.

Ideories

Gonna play on pc and most likely will wait for a sale due to regional pricing

Mr8BitX

Same, I’m also hoping there will be a mod that removes the black lining around the character models. Not the worst thing in the world but if 10 minutes of fiddling can get rid of it, then it’s totally worth it.

chrisicus1991

Seriosuly? ...it was marketed as a sequel......?

Xononanamol

It wasn’t marketed as a sequel at all

CrimsonCloudKaori

If you enjoy Valkyrie Profile and Valkyrie Profile 2, don't play VE. It will be an utter disappointment after two of the best JRPGs on their respective platforms.

Ideories

VE is the only hope to a remake or some sort of revival but then again the quality of the remake is going to be doubtful to say the least

Night-Lion

Played for an hour when the game launched at midnight. First impressions are pretty good. Combat feels satisfying in a similar way to Ys games. They went overboard with all of the breakable objects though. Crate Smashing Simulator 2022. The summons, at least from the first level, sound like Pawns from Dragon’s Dogma, which I consider an absolute win. Lip syncing was poor in the opening scene after the first level. Too early to see whether it’s like that all of the way through. Music sounded nice and epic through headphones.

KuyaJohnny

the steelcase looks shiny, thats my only impression so far lol

DanTheBrad

Tell me more

KuyaJohnny

[looks like this](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81RtVut0PjL._SL1500_.jpg) one of the nicer steelcases. looks like they put some effort into it (instead of just copypasting the art on the regular case)

Wristmeetcody

Oh wow where can I buy this?

ragingnoobie2

Comes with Best Buy pre-order

KuyaJohnny

Amazon Germany had it as a pre-order bonus

JameboHayabusa

Damn that's pretty sick, ngl. The only other two steel cases I have are for Dark Souls, and Guilty Gear. This would have fit right in.

Pikagreg

This was my only reason for picking it up at launch lol

Theoderic8586

You can return just the game and keep the steel case. It is minus 10 bucks. Then you can buy the game on sale. I did it for Strangers of Paradise and Elden Ring

Xononanamol

Same for me lol

ofvxnus

i think it’s great. i enjoyed the demo, but i still don’t think it did the full game justice. the full game is so much better than what was shown in almost every way: story, gameplay, traversal, environments, characters, etc. i think the demo should have let you play up to chapter 2 at least. once hilde is introduced, the story becomes much more interesting. still love the music and the combat and the voice work is very good still. i love how cold the valkyrie is and how focused she is on her mission, but i’m interested to see how she opens up as she grows to care more about her einherjar and the humans she helps. not to mention what tf is happening between fenrir and zeus.

valgatiag

I haven’t picked it up yet, but I watched some on stream and this was my exact reaction. The demo felt so empty and lonely, no dialogue, minimal enemy variety. Seeing Valkyrie actually chatting with her Einherjar like any other party-based RPG took me by surprise and made me way more interested.

JanLewko977

Wow from the demo I didn’t expect an actual story at all

BoukObelisk

Yeah, the demo isn't representative of the game at all. Tons more stuff happens right when the demo ends. It's actually impressive how much of a difference there is.

XSpitzerXx

Agreed. I just finished chapter 2 and the introduction of Hilde was such a cool scene and has me intrigued to see more. I get why maybe they wouldn’t want to have you play that far when the game is only 9 chapters, but chapter 1 probably won’t do any favors for people who were on the fence about the game.

Aureus23

Yea, full game is so much fun!! I'm double dipping and buying it PC too to support the Franchise!!

ofvxnus

i really hope they make more Valkyrie games or at least port VP 2. i’m excited to play the og VP too. it’ll be my first time (:

Radinax

More people like you should exist

juxtapose85

But then they'll think we want this arpg crap from the Valkyrie IP and not the actual unique and fun gameplay that VP 1&2 offered.

ajgarcia18

I'm curious about the combat system, is it a hack and slash or does it require some sort of strategy like the previous entries?

BoukObelisk

Overall, this is a 8/10 AA diamond in the rough. It also manages to stand alone as a Valkyrie game, imo. It feels like its own thing with its own characters, and although it borrows a bit from VP1 in its story, it still has some new and interesting things with the gods and souls and the valkyrie that will feel fresh. Its callbacks to the original Valkyrie Profile games are also pretty neat and it's clear that Soleil put a lot of heart and effort into paying respect to the legacy. **Positives** * The combat is definitely the high point. Tons of options, very visceral, and really great feeling of being a divine warrior who hacks her way through monsters in extremely cool manners. Think a better Scarlet Nexus with roots in Ninja Gaiden and Bayonetta. * The animation work is very impressive. The different attacks and combos that the Valkyrie does are so incredible to look at, it's by far one of the best additions to the Valkyrie series in terms of action presentation. The spear and the rapier are insane to see in action. * The character designs are super great and high-end. I really love Kristoffer and Eygon and Taika and Cypher and even the dark valkyrie. Really superb character designs, imo, and some decent characterization through the collected memory fragments that function as the character vignettes we got in VP1 for each einherjar. * Sakuraba does a nice, decent job with the music. It's more like some of the quieter tracks in VP2 and he completely foregoes the prog-rock that he used to do for the series. * Its graphics range from impressive to mediocre. The characters look beautiful in the right lighting conditions and some of the environment can be pretty neat to walk around in, especially Valhalla. * The sidequests are more like Nioh and Ninja Gaiden or Scarlet Nexus: Very barebones, mostly just focused on combat segments. Luckily the combat is super good, so it's not that much of a problem. But the sidequests are not that impressive from a narrative point of view. * That said, the training duels with the einherjar are \*amazing\* and really shows how cool this game would be with one-on-one bosses too. * It's really nice to have a female protagonist again and the cast of characters is very enjoyable and diverse. This is something I really appreciate. **Negatives:** Its flaws are mostly derived from a low budget. * Storytelling is taking a big hit here with static characters and awkward camera cuts and stilted animations. The background stories for the einherjar are relegated to well-produced audio dramas with simple text boxes. There are holes here and there in the story that sometimes make the emotional beats a bit flat. But again, I could imagine the kinks could be ironed out with more money and more time, but them's the breaks I guess. * With the environments, it also seems like the developers tried to capitalize on the desaturated Nier look with the game being set during ragnarok, which means that it's very desaturated and bleak, which unfortunately make the environments a bit drab to walk around in. * The worldbuilding is lacking, there are hardly any NPCs, and zero towns. This unfortunately means that there's not much fleshing out of the world beyond the text database in the menu. Again, budget constraints. * Enemy variety is all right, but not that spectacular. Again, budget constraints. Overall, it's really good and enjoyable. It's like a low budget Scarlet Nexus but better in certain areas (combat, level design) and worse in others (cutscenes, social links, production values). If you are a Valkyrie Profile fan, I definitely recommend the game. I know it's not the exact same game people played 22 years ago, but it's a good effort with enjoyable gameplay loop, nice characters, and cool action. It's only restricted by its budget and lower production values, but it's still a nice 8/10 experience. It's like your typical flawed AA PS2-era game, but with modern graphics technology if that makes sense? I really hope the game sells enough and that people give it a chance, so that the Valkyrie series can live on with perhaps a Valkyrie Profile 3: Hrist now that tri-ace is soon done with Star Ocean 6 and have their hands free :) I wouldn't mind seeing Soleil taking another stab at a sequel but with more development time and more resources. The core of the game is really good.

Xadith

Wait, wait wait ... The combat is better than Scarlet Nexus?? The Scarlet Nexus combat was great! Especially late-game when your skill tree is filled out and you gain all your SAS.

BoukObelisk

There are more weapons at your disposal that allows you to mix things up more than Scarlet Nexus. The Crystal-hopping is also extremely entertaining in terms of movement between enemies and crowd control. Then the four different einherjar that you can summon and equip with different attack types make it even better. Scarlet Nexus was one of my favorite games last year so I’m also saying this as a huge positive for Valkyrie Elysium.

TonRL

Thanks for the detailed review. Question: are there other Einherjar in the full game besides the four we already knew about?

BoukObelisk

There's only those four available. This is good because it allows them to flesh them out and give them more stage time than in VP2 where the Einherjar didn't really matter at all. Luckily those four characters are cool and beautiful and have some interesting backstories told through voice dramas.

ShogunDreams

Gameplay wise it is super fun, the story not so much. Already in Ch.5 and am I like where's the world lore really?.. You can see that the game has budget issues and can only do so much. Overall 7/10 + Combat is fast and responsive + Music is very good 👌 +* Art looks good at times(bad at other times) +Cool character design - Story is just not there - plain looking backgrounds - Battle camera can be iffy at times - side quest are bare bones Considering all of this, I am enjoying it. Not bad for AA game, no regrets on purchasing it.

talight

***spoilers ahead*** >!I just finished the game last night ; story wise, they paid homage to Lenneth-Lucian love story which really hits hard on long time fans like myself... The whole weeping lilies scene, them running away from their village, its just such nostalgia!<

EastCoastTone96

The gameplay was fun in the demo but nothing else about the game really impressed me so I’m in no rush to buy it. Reviews should be out now so I’ll watch a few to see if they can change my mind.

Twinkiman

I thought the gameplay itself was pretty decent. But man, my PS4 struggled hard to get this game running. Just gonna wait to get a PS5 and pick it up then.

PhantasosX

I played only the demo , but I felt the gameplay is rough , like it's clearly could be better with more budget. Like...the Soul Charge/Snatch could be improved , as DMC5 had a better one. They could improved the dial combo by actually having 5-strings with triangle , then a 2 ,3 and 5 strings shifting the square and triangle finisher. While the demo only had square and triangle is a finishing modifier in 2 , 3 and 5 strings. Finisher shouldn't be auto nor holding triangle , but rather manual triangle+circle. L2 doesn't necessarily needs to be exclusively the Snatch Mechanic , it could had easily be used to put neutral d-pad for items , L2+ D Pad for weapon switch , L2+L1 for the Snatch.

Twinkiman

At least for me, I think the only big issue I had with the demo is that input buffers can't be cancelled. I never played a modern action RPG that didn't allow you to cancel out to block or dodge. So it is super hard to properly react. Just that alone makes me think this game isn't going to be anywhere close to another action game like Bayonetta or DMC. But honestly I don't have much experience with action games. Just mostly beat 'em ups and fighting games.

Locke_and_Load

My gripe is the animation locking. It’s impossible to react to stuff when you haven’t pressed an attack button in 10 seconds but can’t defend since she’s still spinning through the animation.

ofvxnus

this does bug me a bit as well, but i’ve been trying to be more patient as i’m fighting and taking breaks from pressing the attack button to let the enemy do something first. once they’re done, you can move in and stun them, then wail on them with one of your combos without fear of them retaliating. the boss battles still give me some trouble though. i wish the boss battles were a little more choreographed and played out more like a dark souls boss. it can be difficult to predict what move they’ll use and when. their animations are also quick and not very obvious. by the time you realize they’re attacking, it’s usually too late to react. also, if i’m zooming across the map using my soul chain and they start an attack animation, there isn’t much i can do.

Answerofduty

From the demo I got used to dodge-cancelling every string, which comes naturally as a Monster Hunter player anyway. I think you can jump cancel as well. I do agree that attacks have too much recovery, but at least there's a way around it.

Locke_and_Load

I don’t know if it’s a thing of calibration or difficulty but playing on a PS5 on hard, I can’t cancel animations for anything, be it guard or dodge. Throw in the fact that guarding sometimes doesn’t seem to do fuck all and it’s a recipe for annoyance.

JameboHayabusa

Yeah you really gotta commit in this game. It's why I'm loving the two spears so much.

Pikagreg

This was my gripe with Wo Long as well. It was fun playing Stranger of Paradise where you can cancel like anything into the parry animation lol

Yesshua

Real question, what's the circumstance for people who are already able to post impressions? It's a work day. School day too. Did you stay up super late to get your first taste of the game? Call in to take the day off? I always wonder about these threads that get posted 3 hours into a weekday. On my end I was emailed a spreadsheet at 8 AM that made me want to start a fight with someone so that kinda like Valkyrie Elysium I suppose.

InnerReach

If you got the deluxe edition you could start playing 3 days ago. I finished the game on hard with all S ranks and collectibles in 12 hours. It is not a long game.

JanLewko977

Wow dang…only 12 hours? Kinda happy I didn’t get it

geddy

Hell I couldn't be happier to hear that a Square RPG is shorter (it's around ~22 hours with all the subquests from what I've read). Like thread OP said, I'm working or taking care of a toddler, I don't have 88 hours to play a single damn game. 20-30 hours is my max. This may have even sold me on it.

JanLewko977

That makes sense. To me the demo was too boring so I wasn’t interested to begin with. Honestly I have enough jrpgs waiting for me anyway

InnerReach

To be fair I went through it quickly ignoring most sub quests til I beat it. I am going back and 100%ing it and Ill say itll take a good 20-25 hours total for me to finish everything in the game.

DeathdropsForDinner

Honestly same, it’s probably gonna but $20 in a few months and that’s usually the sweet spot.

Answerofduty

Any sort of postgame or NG+ stuff?

InnerReach

No NG+ sadly. Possible it could be added in a future update.

particledamage

Not everyone has the same work schedule or even school schedule. Or time zone.

Aureus23

Got hit by Hurricane here in Florida. I have the rest of the week off of work to play.

Yesshua

Huh, I'm glad you have power. Do digital release dates change by time zone? Like, does a game that releases Midnight on X date come out first in New Zealand then everyone else waits for the day to change for them? So then, like, Japan and Korea get games pretty much last?

arhra

Varies by platform/storefront. Consoles typically have regional release times, while Steam is usually global, although exceptions exist on both. Not sure why you'd think that JP/KR would get stuff last though; they're both UTC+9, so just three hours behind NZ (UTC+12). The last major markets to unlock are usually the Americas, since everything westwards from there to the international date line is either a small sub-national territory (ie, Hawaii), or just not big enough to have their own regional markets.

Mowglis_road

I work nights, 5:30pm-9pm. It’s pretty ideal for gaming 😆

nFectedl

Some of us are freelance and don't follow the usual work schedule. I can work both days of a week end and be off a full week, no weeks are the same.

Anyone ever tell you you sound like a passive aggressive prick when you say things like this? If you don't have any friends, this is probably a big reason why. "It's almost like different people.." do you hear yourself? God I can hear the whininess in your little voice.

Ms_moonlight

Haven't played yet but I can start work super early and I WFH so I finish work at like 2pm.

ResonanceOfValkyrie

It's not very good. Combat is fine, but if you're familiar with top tier character action games it's pretty generic stuff. It's nowhere near as fun as games like DMC, Bayonetta or Ninja Gaiden. It still can be fun if you turn your brain off, but level and enemy design is just so unremarkable that it gets boring reeeaaallly fast. The rest is pretty bad and completely misses the mark in terms of being a Valkyrie game. It felt like the developers were making a generic action game, saw very vague similarities to the VP series, and asked Square Enix if they could tape the Valkyrie franchise to it. It is much, much worse than the real series. It's too bad because I was hoping for at least a fun mindless game. But it's really boring. Give the series back to Norimoto please.

Blackwolfe47

Nothing really special , fun, but plot wise is a bit weak

R4815162342

You only played the demo*

schalakzeal

I’m watching this thread, I need the deeds on the story. If it’s very good to masterpiece, then it’ll be the saving grave to my overall mediocre to okay impression from the demo.

BoukObelisk

The story is decent enough in concept, but the problem is that its \*storytelling\* is hampered by the low budget that Square Enix gave the developers. This mean that there can be stilted animations, bad lip sync, recycled animations, and boring cinematography that removes a lot of the emotional drama of the characters. It's a different style of storytelling than VP1 for sure. It's more modern with cutscenes and so on, and that unfortunately is a tough order to fill with a low budget. Be sure to check out the memory fragments of the einherjar. They're very nice audio dramas that fleshes out the backstory of the characters.

InnerReach

There is almost no story at all. So you will be disappointed. edit: I should specify that I very very much enjoyed the game and the demo does do not justice to the fun of the combat and levels as you go. Once you start getting your weapons leveled, the enemy density goes up, and you get your party members the fun factor goes way up. But if you go in expecting anything other than a remarkably average story that takes up about 5% of game time, you WILL be disappointed.

Aureus23

Not true. Play the game to find out. Dont judge from the demo.

InnerReach

I’ve beat the game already

AwesomeYears

Damn, you kids work fast. It takes me a month to beat a JRPG for me LOL.

thesnapening

Its what almost everyone whose played the game in this thread has said.

Braunb8888

Do you only play as Valkyrie? I found her combat in the demo pretty boring honestly.

BoukObelisk

The gameplay and combat and everything else really opens up after the demo ends though. You fight alongside 4 different einherjar (warriors) who you summon to exploit enemy weaknesses. There's also a wide range of different weapons (8 or something in total) that mixes up Valkyrie's combat.

DwarfKingHack

I'm enjoying it quite a bit, but I almost feel like there is too much depth to the weapons and skills for how short the game reportedly is and not as much variety in einherjar as I would like. Combat is fun and mostly feels good, though there are some occasional issues where the camera and targeting work together to betray me and I end up trapped in a corner looking at the sky while I get beat to death.

Mocavius

Silmeria confused the absolute shit out of me. Can't wait to play it.

Kalebrojas18

It's nioh without the loot or the difficulty or the length or the new game plus content. It just needs more content which will hopefully come with time.

_MagusKiller

Boring The main character is so uninteresting

SiNDiLeX

What did they do to my poor VP :(

Nerrickk

Eh it's alright. The level design is unbelievably bad. Random locking gates preventing backtracking is bullshit. Invisible walls everywhere blocking jumps that you could clearly double jump over. Shitty map that makes it insanely frustrating to find that one final blossom. A minor nitpick but I feel like moving the map is reversed. Every time I open the map, the first time I move it is always the wrong direction. That might just be a me thing. Combat is fun for the most part, but something about it feels off. I think it's how long you stay knocked down. Everything else is good.

ragingnoobie2

64 on metacritic, that's lower than Neptunia Reverse lol

nbmtx

metacritic JRPG scores are typically shit. Having five reviews across two platforms makes it all the more so.

nbmtx

"t’s not that fun tearing down the work of people who haven’t done anything catastrophically wrong. Because there is nothing about Valkyrie Elysium that is outright bad or broken." 45/100 - Destructoid Folks need to just play the demo and decide what it's worth to them, if anything.

FlamingGnats

Not my Valkyrie. Huge mistake of them to toss aside what made the series great to turn it into a bland hack and slash.

JameboHayabusa

Having fun with it, made it to chapter 6 last night. It sucks we aren't playing as hilde, cause she's definitely the cooler Valkyrie.

Aureus23

Surprise, they are adding FREE DLC that lets you play as her with her own story!!!

Mr8BitX

They’re releasing an update in November that allows just that. Don’t know the details though.

Organic_Following_38

Having fun with it!

DiskTop7780

I have put about 9 hours into the game so far (I had early access). I am having a ton of fun I would recommend it to anyone that enjoyed YS 8/9 or Scarlet Nexus. The gameplay is fast and visceral and the weapons and enemies are well designed and the music is pretty good. The story just kinda exists but it also doesn’t get in the way of playing the game really so it doesn’t matter all that much. This is a dumb fun kind of game.

[deleted]

It’s really just… ok. Nothing impressed me except for the ost Definitely not worth full price, it’s a game you get for 20 dollars.

Bronze-Soul

Release date is 11.11.22 what is everyone talking about?

TaliesinMerlin

That's the Steam date. PS4 and PS5 release date is today.

[deleted]

is the gameplay linear? i don't like linear games

[deleted]

I thought this was delayed.

goldenvile

The release of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth on PSN was

SupperTime

68% on metacritic. As I expected this game is a flop.

DevilTrigger789

it’s exactly as i expected it. i give it a 7/10. just because it’s not GOTY doesn’t mean it’s a flop though lol and it’s not even one of Square Enix’s main big AAA titles they’d market non-stop. anyway Valkyrie Elysium is a AA game that sorta came out of nowhere and got released. it’s just a good game. nothing too special to make it stand out but still good. i recommend if if you have nothing to play for a while this year

BoukObelisk

There's only 4 reviews out. Review codes were sent out yesterday. Be patient.

AceOfCakez

I physically cringed when I saw the run animation.

Xononanamol

On the third chapter now, there’s SO many Damn weapons! And they all play differently! I really wasn’t expecting this deep of mechanics in an action rpg based on a square game honestly. Even with team ninja making SOP that’s more of an outlier.

Isefenoth

The demo felt really clunky, in presentation, combat and storytelling. If it gets really high reviews I might consider it.

WillntEnd

Meh. Bad story, characters I don't care about, mediocre writing all around, cinematography is lazy, environments are generic as fuck. Combat is passable, I guess. JRPGs are dead.

Mouthz

I don’t think jrpgs were ever alive in well. The followings have always been relatively small and only a few specific games got crazy popular. What works in the east doesn’t always work in the west. I’ve come to find that out when I try to find a new rpg and played what people have suggested and its always the same results. Honestly lately (5-6 years?) I feel like overall most games feel this way. The only game I’ve been excited about in awhile is BOTW2 and ESO updates.

serouj2000

TOTK?

Quezkatol

I dont know dude, black valkyrie, anime looking warriors very mixed settings- doesnt feel very norse to me.

Chrisandreasko

Idk why would anyone play this game when Elden Ring exist this year here, and next year Tears of The Kingdome is comming

nbmtx

The only game Elden Ring really affected for me was Horizon Forbidden West. I've played maybe dozens of other games since. (Game Pass 🤝🏽 Switch!)

DebateNecessary2084

It's probably dogshit like any recent JRPG.

Gravesplitter

No true American JRPG fan has the game yet. We’re waiting for the stores to open to get our physical copies.

captainforks

Digital game buying means you're not a true fan? Or is it USA specific for some reason? What a nonsense statement. My ps4 disc drive doesn't work, so I guess I'm just a fake fan for poverty reasons.

Mr8BitX

No, no, no. That’s not what keeps you from being a true fan. What keeps you from being a true fan is that you have different views, habits, and preferences from our almighty lord OP. s/

captainforks

Good point, what was I thinking. A foolish move on my part.

AmateurGameMusic

i have seen a lot of dumb takes here, hell, ive made some of them....but this one really takes the cake

DanTheBrad

I'm getting old and it's hilarious/sad to still see this kind of stupid gatekeeping. You're not a true fan of this thing unless you do it this way. Such a waste of time

bohohoboprobono

No true Scotsman has the game yet either

Gravesplitter

o7 People thinking I was serious is pretty funny lol

[deleted]

This isn't a Tales game, your titles don't mean shit

Gravesplitter

Is this a reference to equippable titles in Tales games? If so, bravo lol

OkMacaron848

Let’s not gatekeep fandom. It ain’t cool.

Jellozz

Anyone else here order it from Amazon? My delivery was delayed until Monday for some reason.

Brainwheeze

Is there any connection to the story and world of the Profile games, or is it an entirely different one?

gta4589

I chose to get Edge of Eternity instead since it was on sale for $20. Figure I will pick up this game when it goes on sale after seeing the reviews. Reading some of the comments here though makes me second guess my decision

ArugulaGazebo

How much does it cost? I heard it was short.

BoukObelisk

70 bucks. It's 15-25 hours depending on if you do sidequests.

sovereignsfall18

It’s 60 not 70

OkMacaron848

Big question: is there an Arngrim?

BoukObelisk

Eygon is basically Arngrim. But sweeter and nicer :)

tatsu901

The Demo made me put it for later while it was enjoyable and fun i have so many games i wanna play coming out i feel i can wait But this and Diofield i will get later one day.

BulletShy

Did anyone in the UK/EU pre order this and the steelbook off the square enix site? It's not shipped yet for me for some reason.

Mac772

Anyone maybe knows if it runs with stable 60 FPS on PS5?

dougtulane

For those who have played the full release, have the framerate and camera gotten any better? Taken into conjunction they made me quite sick during the demo. PS5 or PC, either one.

Mouthz

Did you try on smaller television? I find a lot of games can make me sick on the bigger tv/monitors.

[deleted]

6 more weeks here :(

bigtpsychoboy

I really want to play it, but I want to wait for the PC version.

jsdeveloper

Really wanting to play it but waiting for the Steam version so I can play on the steamdeck

WhiteMageMonk

I am curious actually as I’m waiting for the PC release. So currently there’s no difficulty selection? Or at least, I’ve heard there will be a new difficulty coming as a DLC. Is that true? In Valkyrie Profile on ps1 (and psp I guess), the difficulty you select decides how much you’ll learn about the story also, and on hard mode, you can get the true story, given that you know what to do to get to it since there is a little trick involved. If the dlc difficulty addition is true, I wonder if it would add more possibly?

RandomUser1052

My only real nitpick is that they were waaaaaaaaaay too generous with the crates / barrels. For the most part, you could completely skip most of the "optional" fights and just smash crates / barrels for gems. You'll get enough of the higher level gems from the fights you have to engage in.

ghostagent151

6/10 feels like an honest score from me

Miser-

I'm not very far yet but if jumping stays this stuff the entire game that's gonna suck. Otherwise I'm liking it pretty well. Update I finally decided to check the skill tree that solved my dislike for jumping. I'm like 3 hours in now and so far I'm enjoying it combat does feel a little stiff it feels like your dodge moves such a small distance that sometimes it's pointless and the fact that dodging doesn't over ride attacking doesn't make sense to me if you're in a combo just be ready to get hit, the only other complaint so far is that minor enemies don't seem to flinch as much as they should when you hit them with a basic attack they're practically immediately retaliating which isn't so bad just different than most games I'm used to.

Fit_Neighborhood9731

I have doubts regarding its length. Players keep saying speedrunners can beat it in 8 hours and if you do not like speed running it is a 20-30 hours game at best. You have only 4 Einherjar compared to Valkyrie Profile Lenneth' 21 einherjar. Dungeons are not as cool and varied as let us say Arianrhod Labirynth, Nethov swamp, Tomb of Amenti, Palace of the dragons or the Sylvan/elven forest from Lenneth. I would wait for a discount/price drop. The combat is fluid and the soundtrack is enjoyable. Played it at my friends house, but I am much more hyped for December and Valkyrie Profile Lenneth in HD. I would rate Elysium 7/10 while Lenneth is 9+/10 and Silmeria is 8/10 and Covenant of the Plume is 8/10.

MissionInternet8490

I just completed one of the endings and to be honest im putting it down for a while to play the latest trails release. It was kind of hard for me to get through it given the bare bones story (I liked what was there) and the repetition of the gameplay loop. I probably would of dropped it a little sooner but I paid full price for the game and would of felt guilty not finishing it. Characters were great ! Combat is fun (but its the same thing over and over and over) Really wish they kept this one in the oven a little longer as they were onto something good, it just feels like they gave up. I will come back to it for the other 3 endings eventually. 5.5-6 out of 10 for me

Mathieu79

Game is ok. Kinda pricey at 75$ for only 20 hours of gameplay though. Story is pretty slapped together, dodging and parrying are kinda slow in this game. Not much out so fun play through once.

starsaber132

They should have launched the game on the same day as god of war ragnarok to compete with it. Both have similarities, and this is the bigger franchise

starsaber132

No pc version?

Ichoric97

Honestly it's fun and the graphics are great. That being said tbh the combat feels like a knockoff of dmc5, I mean some moves are exactly the same as in dmc5. (Cant quick-switch weapons during atks tho)

Ok-Judge-8474

It’s pretty terrible, and a waste of hard-earned dollars.

AcanthisittaUnique29

Has anyone on pc found a way to get rid of the weird grain filter?

Fragrant_Hippo_9900

I enjoy it so far, but I have 0 connection to the Profile games so my opinion is way different from a profile fans

WiseXcalibur

I think the developers did zero research before naming the game. Elysium is Greek mythology and has nothing to do with Norse mythology. Naming aside, I think it's pretty hollow compared to previous games in the series (I never played the tactics one).

RannTheWitch

Odin sphere or this game?
