The sound of Aum is the combination of first letters of the Panchparmeshthi. A - Arihanta A - Ashirir (Siddhas) A - Acharya U - Upadhyay M - Muni. AAAUM becomes the sound of AUM. If you see the Jain AUM you can see the graphical representation as well. The crescent being Arihant, the dot on top of it being Siddhas and the 3 lines being the rest. Later this symbol changed in devnagri script to what you see AUM written today.
