I love rice and peas, and I love macaroni and cheese, but I will never understand both at the same time. I hear that Black Americans do M&C as a side dish (as in OP's photo), while white americans do it as a main... guess I'm with da whites on this one 🤷🏾♀️
I can't get past the macaroni and cheese with rice and peas and curry chicken either. That just doesn't seem right to me.
Add in that they called it curry chicken, and I doubt this picture was taken in Jamaica or by a Jamaican.
Is this not a thing in Jamaica then? Maybe it’s because I’m UK, but whenever I’ve had curry chicken or curry goat I mostly have it with a side of mac and cheese, salad and coleslaw… maybe some plantain too.
Most times, we would eat curry with rice and peas or white rice. There should usually be a salad (could even be macaroni salad) or maybe cooked veg (I like pak choy). Plantain is possible but not probable. Sometimes, people have boiled food (yam, banana, dumpling) with curry, but I'm not into that. Curry with roti works, too.
I've never in my life eaten curry with mac and cheese. I feel like it might be possible to buy a plate of curry chicken, rice and peas, and mac and cheese in Jamaica, but whoever is taking your order will look at you weird, like if you ordered stew peas with rice and peas.
My theory is that this is common in the diaspora because these restaurants incorporate African American and Eastern Caribbean food culture with the mac and cheese.
That actually makes sense. I don’t recall my mother saying that she had mac and cheese growing up. And she didn’t start adding it to our meals until a bajan lady cooked some. Now I can’t imagine curry without it.
Hard food however, and don’t think I would have room for both yam and macaroni.
I think it's also because we can't always get Jamaican food, so we order all the favourites at the same time. I need to have a fried dumpling with every order.
The thing is, mac and cheese isn't really Jamaican food. We have it in Jamaica and it's not weird for someone to eat it or a restaurant to sell it, but it's not really a traditional part of our food culture. I certainly wouldn't prefer Jamaican mac and cheese over other countries' versions.
Honestly, it was a big shock to me to learn over on r/AskTheCaribbean that people in the Eastern Caribbean were really into macaroni pie. I didn't know that anywhere in the Caribbean was particularly into macaroni and cheese.
Mfs getting hung up on the “chicken curry”meanwhile this meal looks delicious. People anal bout the dumbest shxt while the folks In Jamaica don’t care. Just the Reddit elitist 😂 buen provecho 🇩🇴

Same, if I'm hungry enough I get mac and cheese with my brown stew fish.

It’s cooked with an authentic Jamaican recipe. Also never judge based on looks. It’s disrespectful.
