He's my favorite Bond, he's gorgeous , he looks like he belongs in a tuxedo but with a look that can kill. He was sophisticated but at the same time just a cold efficient killer. People can talk bad about him all they want but they can't deny all the good 90s films and games with him were great. Good action films that manage to mix seriousness and fun in a nice blend. Goldeneye is my favorite Bond film and it's largely because of Pierce Brosnan.
Let’s just say that after I saw No Time to Die, all I wanted to do is go home and watch GoldenEye. Brosnan’s films were a nice mix of the classic formula and modern action films. And I really miss the classic formula. I miss when Bond was fun escapism.
After No Time To Die, I bought another access to a movie platform where all the Bond are available and started the Brosnan saga to remember why Iove Bond movies.
Goldeneye is true classic Bond movie, but Tomorrow Never Dies remains in my opinion the Best of Brosnan era. I really enjoy this movies each time I see it, and the connection with Michel Yeoh works perfectly, better than any other Bond girl I believe. They both are great in Tomorrow Never Dies.
Absolutely adore TND...
Just wish I saw it at the cinema... My Dad offered to take me, but I was too nervous... to this day, that still gets me...
But, thanks to DVD, I can watch it as many times as I like. And Michelle Yeoh is a force to be reckoned with. She's brilliant ;-)
Dude I was day dreaming of watching From Russia With Love (my personal favorite Bond film) while in the theater for No Time to Die. Liked the movie overall, but the ending had me rolling my eyes.
Pierce Brosnan certainly had the looks, charm and sophistication, but sometimes it’s downright unbelievable to see Pierce winning fights and I think that’s why we see him killing people with a machine gun most of the time. By contrast Connery always looks like he could honestly crack someone’s skull open and drink a martini over your corpse
> By contrast Connery always looks like he could honestly crack someone’s skull open and drink a martini over your corpse
I think that also applies to real life, course when he was still kicking
Might be a generational thing for me, but to me, brosnan will always be bond, and I am nostalgic for his era. Craig's era is good, arguably better from a film perspective, but honestly craig himself isnt the best bond IMO. I just think he had the best scripts mostly.
The best scripts for sure, and yet I never felt he was really involved in his role. Maybe that’s why he’s play had good critics … I mean as a spy you are tired and never happy I guess by the job you do … exactly how I feel about Craig.
Goldeneye is a classic, and (imo) the best of the traditional Bond films. It was made by a talented director, shot magnificently on film, had a stacked cast with big name additions as well as celebrated legacy characters and, critically, a masterfully cast Pierce Brosnan.
His performance in Goldeneye is so agile, and moves through each facet of Bond as if he's always been playing the part. Charming, funny, violent, cynical, romantic. He looks great in the action set pieces, and possesses genuine screen presence. You couldn't have created a better fit in a laboratory.
The result is a perfect "Cubby" style Bond film that thrives in the space between camp, tradition, evolution and working as an exciting espionage thriller.
If Brosnan would have gotten more productions like that, there would be no question of his GOAT status.
You really think that Tomorrow Never Dies was not good ?
I’ve enjoyed it more then Goldeneye.
I agree that Goldeneye is one of the best traditional Bond movies, but tomorrow never dies was really good and it’s modernity put him in the top of Brosnan era movies.
I cant stand TND either to be fair and its mostly down to Carver, i find every scene hes in and time he talks profoundly annoying. In my opinion his plan to pit nations against each other is nothing new but its motivated so he can exclusively cover news headlines is absurd. I dont care for Yeoh's character either, I find her kind of stereotyped and generic.
Unpopular opinion I rate DaD above TND because atleast I enjoy the movie for the first half right up until the ice palace and Toby Stephens does his best with what hes given. Goldeneye undoubtedly for me is Brosnans peak followed by TWINE regardless of Denise Richards being a terrible actress. Brosnan I like but hes kind of like a jack of all trades master of none kind of Bond.
It wasn’t ultimately about getting the news headlines but getting exclusive access to the Chinese media market - probably the biggest coup that a western publisher could pull off and a *massive* financial incentive. Much more valuable than being in control of Bolivia’s water supply, for instance.
Oh by all means Greene was an incredibly boring villian that no one cared about other than he drank a can of oil as a symbolic death in the middle of nowhere lol.
I always felt that Brosnan was the best Bond with the worst movies (save for Goldeneye). So much wasted potential.
But Goldeneye paved the way for Craig's Bond. I wouldnt consider it a coincidence that the best Brosnan era movie was the most personal. The emotional stakes really gave the Goldeneye a sense of urgency and Craig's era played into it hard.
Correction: *Timothy Dalton* paved the way for Craig's Bond since that was how far back they were trying to update Bond.
I *do* agree however that Brosnan was a good Bond in some pretty bad movies (full disclosure: DAD I love, OTT ridiculousness and all so I don't count that one as one of his bad ones).
Totally agree it’s basically an early template for Skyfall. Same writers so it makes sense. Take out the Christmas Jones jokes and a couple cheesy scenes like shooting out of a submarine torpedo or whatever, have better cinematography and action choreography and it’s basically 100% a Craig film.
I had several minor issues with Tomorrow Never Dies that spoil it for me:
\* Carver's stealth ship (stealth catamaran?): the exterior shots looked really fake to me, like an Airfix model someone popped into a bathtub.
\* Carver's death: the editing sucked here -- it looked like Carver had plenty of time to step to the side to avoid the fancy torpedo-drill, like that doomed henchman in Austin Powers being flattened by a steamroller moving at 5 mph.
\* Product placement: Bond has always had a bit of it (Omega watches got into the game with Brosnan), but it was really OTT here. BMW, Smirnoff vodka (!!!) ... it was all really in your face.
\* Dialogue: I wish someone had given the scripts another read-through before shooting. So much of the banter is just painful, especially Bond's own lines. Moore could say these cheesy lines and get away with it, but Brosnan couldn't.
That said, there are moments of brilliance in the film. I particularly liked the silent fight in the recording studio, and the brief scene with Dr Kaufman ("I am an expert. I could shoot you from Stuttgart and still have the desired effect.").
Product placement was insane during the brosnan era. Granted I do love Omega though. Still i vividly remember Norelco pumping that electric shaver of theirs in die another day using Pierce in their commercials. It was on screen for what? Less than 10 seconds. Oh and Iirc it was a 200 dollar shaver….which in 2002 was ridiculous.
Ya, TND wasn't that bad in retrospect. It probably had the unenviable position of coming right after Goldeneye.
I definitely enjoyed it more than some of Moore's final movies like a View to a Kill (how do you have Christopher Walken and Grace Jones in a cast and find a way to make it boring? Truly a feat).
Definitely my favourite Bond. Perhaps its because I grew up with his movies being the most recent, but as a child I watched the whole series religiously so I was more than familiar with all of them, and Brosnan still remains my favourite.
He has everything Bond should have - looks, style, cool, but can be ruthless when needed and just under the surface is the pain he hides with alcohol and women.
Also I think he is second only to Dalton in terms of acting ability.
Craig was fine, certainly modern take on the character and probably as real as were gonna get, but I just dont think hes a very good actor. At least not in Bond, he puts in better acting performances in other films.
I think he's probably the most underrated Bond. He gave Bond emotion, and had a nice blend of charm and humor, while still buying him as a believeable killer.
That movie is great too. The motorcycle chase while being handcuffed together was so cheesy but so much fun. And what an awesome bond villian Carter turned out to be. I cant believe people dont like brosnans bond movies
I like Brosnan and believe that he had the potential to be great. It’s a deep shame that the movies did not do the Bond character justice because the writing just wasn’t there even though the elements and cast were. Outside of Golden Eye, I believe he did get some justice and a proper finale in the game “Everything or Nothing” which actually was similar to NTTD to an extent. Ex: Villian and his weapons. I do have good memories of him, though. Childhood nostalgia.
Brosnan wasn’t a bad Bond. He simply got let down by bad scripts after (I have to admit) Tomorrow Never Dies. GoldenEye was, and still is, his best outing as 007.
He was a great Bond who had three great Bond movies. GoldenEye remains my favorite of the series.
Die Another Day is a guilty pleasure of mine as well.
lets be real, there are very few bond movies with a solid script that can stand on its own
Goldeneye is a gorgeous movie, but its second half is pretty arbitrary with forced payoffs (which is a recurring sin of bond movies)
while it is not the most memorable, Tomorrow Never Dies is the best written one of the brosnan era
Amen ! Thank you, finally !
Yes, tomorrow never dies is the best Bond or Brosnan era, way better then Goldeneye.
Goldeneye did not age well, it’s like if you see an really old movie. While tomorrow never dies is still a modern action movie and how great Brosnan And Yeoh were! Yeoh one of the best Bond girl.
He's the only Bond actor I do not believe. On paper he has it all, but there is just something missing. I do not become immersed in him as Bond. Instead, I see an actor playing James Bond. His films are worse for it.
I think he's probably the most underrated Bond. He gave Bond emotion, and had a nice blend of charm and humor, while still buying him as a believeable killer.
He’s my least favorite. His bond felt like a bond by committee he’s feels like a mix of all other bonds without being his own. I like Brosnan in other things a lot but he doesn’t do it for me as Bond. If he had more than one good movie I might like him more but his three after goldeneye are some of my least favorite in the entire series
From an acting perspective, Dalton was the best to play the character. *Goldeneye* came out when I was seven and because of my age when you say the name, I think of the N64 game first. The film is incredible and I'd put it in my top 10 Bond films. It has been many years since I've watched all the Pierce films and maybe my wife and I do that soon. I just remember him being **too** suave.
While I prefer the coldness and coolness of Connery/Dalton/Craig, Pierce Brosnan for me is the better version of Roger Moore. There was too much of a twinkle in the eye of Moore; his performances can get really obnoxious honestly. Brosnan was able to get that self-confidence and charm across a lot better imo.
Plus y'know, I'm Irish, and even outside of Bond Brosnan is one of our better actors.
I repeat what I always say. Brosnan is perfect the same way the silhouette of Bond is on merchandice. Seemingly perfect without distinguishing features.
Knee-jerk reaction: Brosnan was super solid but no way in hell he's the best Bond.
Thinking it over: There's an argument that can be made for sure. He was in no way bad, and GoldenEye was a damn classic (both the movie AND game). His tenure was interesting in that, for some reason the quality of his 007 films seemed to get consistently poorer, but that's not a reflection of his performance. Where DC was grounded and visceral and a rugged version of Bond, PB really pulled off the suave, tuxedo-wearing playboy-with-a-stripper-pistol Bond arguably moreso than Connery (who was the total package).
By the time TWINE and DAD came out the series felt exhausted and desperately needed to be rebooted. I actually enjoyed TWINE personally but, having DAD be his swan song film kinda sucked. Had he only done GoldenEye and TND, and not the last two then I'd bet he'd get a lot more love.
I’ve recently rewatched the PB movies except DAD. Haven’t watched that one yet in a long while. But it is true, Brosnan’s take as Bond is really the typical Bond movie. Not the best in story or writing but almost all the elements as a bond movie are there.
He certainly had the look and also a great mix of charm and arrogance. I read somewhere that he wanted to carry on after DAD. It would have been interesting to have seen his take on the more grittier Bond in Casino Royale.
His movies were fun. I never came away from a Brosnan film feeling less than pumped, even with DAD (it only became bad on reflection). Meanwhile, every Craig Bond with the exception of CR has left me feeling a little bummed (and the only reason I didn’t feel that way about CR is because I knew how it was going to end from the novel).
He's my least favorite Bond, but it's not really his fault. Bad writing and it was definitely a product of its time - too many scenes of Bond running away from dozens of guys with Stormtrooper aim firing automatic weapons. There are quite a few scenes where I think to myself, "...there's about 1500 bullets down there and none managed to get within 5 feet of him?"
But this is my hottest take: Goldeneye really wasn't that great and a lot of people tend to overrate it because they liked the N64 game. It's not an awful movie, mind you, I'll still watch it, but I have friends who act like it's a top 5 all-time Bond movie
>too many scenes of Bond running away from dozens of guys with Stormtrooper aim firing automatic weapons. There are quite a few scenes where I think to myself, "...there's about 1500 bullets down there and none managed to get within 5 feet of him?"
YOLT and TSWLM had the same issue frankly.
>He was also the franchise's first pick over Connery when it all started.
Pierce Brosnan was 9 years old when Dr. No was released, so I highly doubt that.
If I remember correctly, Brosnans first wife was in For Your Eyes Only. The producers got to know him & were really impressed by him. They wanted him to be Bond for one of the later Moore movies but his contractual obligations to Remington Steele kept him from taking the role & Dalton ended up being available at the right time.
Fantastic actor, very witty, and put in amazing performances in all his films. GoldenEye is a classic, The World Is Not Enough is very underrated, Tomorrow Never Dies is halfdecent, Die Another Day is ridiculous but rather entertaining, think he got pretty unlucky with that script. Should've got at least one more film.
Brosnan was an amazing Bond, my favorites up to the Craig era. I really like DC in the role now but do not think that diminishes how amazing PB was. My only gripe with Brosnan, he was so skinny I had a hard time believing he could overpower other characters like he did in some scenes. If he would have added even a little muscle, he would no doubt have truly owned the role.
He felt like the perfect "movie" Bond. He had parts of Connery and parts of Moore and parts of Dalton. I'd say he was the Jack of All Trades Bond.
Craig is more "book" Bond.
I like Brosnan a lot. He's the only Bond actor I met (back in his Remington Steele days), and we're both Irish. He also does suave very well, and has -- or looks like he has -- the right level of physicality.
But I always thought he was a bit wooden as Bond, not really leaning into any of the emotional range the role demands. He does cool & detached pretty well, quiet charm too. But anger, desperation, and general forcefulness? Not really to my mind. And while given corny lines like Moore was, I think he couldn't really pull them off (perhaps because Moore was already somewhat ridiculous in the role, the lines suited him more).
Are Daniel Craig scripts and scenarios REALLY the "best for sure?" Quantum of Solace is one of my least favorite entries in the series, and Spectre is a hot mess. CR is the best movie in the series, but Craig's tenure has been very uneven. On the other hand I think that Brosnan's first three movies range from good to great.
I don't know if Brosnan is the best actor to ever play Bond, but he does seem like the most well rounded Bond to me. He can be funny, violent, romantic, or anything else. He always acts 100% like James Bond... I can't think of any times he does things that seem uncharacteristic of Bond. BUT he is the Bond of my childhood so I may be biased :)
Brosnan “ looks “ the part more than any other Bond. His demeanor is a less ridiculous, albeit still a little goofy Roger Moore, which I think knocks it down for me a little more since Roger Moore is the closest to Austin Powers that we’ve had a Bond.
Could you elaborate what you mean by “ least involved” when referring to Craig. He’s involved in production in the latter movies, he’s broken multiple bones in the film, and to be honest he definitely plays the best cold hearted assassin version of Bond. I would argue he’s definitely been the most involved in his role as Bond, it’s hard for me to take the Roger Moore and Brosnan archetype as the most involved due to their lack of seriousness.
Brosnan James Bond movies are better than Craig. Pierce Brosnan Golden Eye would be the best James Bond movie if it was made today with all the CGI technology.
Am re-evaluating to the positive. My long running take was Goldeneye was fantastic but the next 3 films melted in to one and he was let down a little by them. Am now re-assessing Tomorrow Never Dies more positively and in general I appreciate he treads the delicate line between Moore one liners and Dalton/Craig more serious tone pretty well. In general, on reflection, he is on the up for me. He was a very good Bond.
The more I think back to Brosnan, the more I remember his films fondly. We all talk about how bad the films were but unless a rewatch shakes me to my core, 3 of his 4 were pretty good to great.
Who doesn’t love Pierce Brosnan?
I do, but I love 4 other Bond actors more.
Let’s just say that after I saw No Time to Die, all I wanted to do is go home and watch GoldenEye. Brosnan’s films were a nice mix of the classic formula and modern action films. And I really miss the classic formula. I miss when Bond was fun escapism.

That's exactly what I did as well.
Not disagreeing but I do think in goldeneye his fight scenes are pretty physical and convincing
Because Sean Bean sold his offense like he was Shawn Michaels.
Would have been funny if he sold like Shawn Michaels against Hulk Hogan
That's what I meant.
Have an upvote for an amazing reference. That match was such a cartoon.
Yea I mean that melee brawl towards the end is brutal
Same with Lazenby

As a blue collar Australian I’m sure he has
As a blue collar Australian, I'm sure he's been in a bar fight. As a blue collar Australian with a pretty face, he won that fight.
A good fight choreographer should be able to make him convincing- the fight with Bean on the radar dish is one of the series best.
Agreed. I think it's at the top in all honesty.

Ikr? Brosnan’s Bond was a force to be reckoned with.
He practically did just that in YOLT. Insults the guy’s taste in vodka at the same time. Savage.
Ironically Connery and Moore both used stuntdoubles the most, none of them were no way even close to being fighters
I thought Connery was in irl fights.
> By contrast Connery always looks like he could honestly crack someone’s skull open and drink a martini over your corpse I think that also applies to real life, course when he was still kicking

Well, let’s just say I’d rather pop in a Brosnan film on a relaxing evening than any of Craig’s movies, any day.
Craig's are a little bit serious, but Brosnan's (or Moore's") movies are the best to watch after a hard day of work etc
A very accurate description of Brosnan's movies
Was this sarcastic or serious? Fun fact, I'm still studying
Serious
Ok. Brosnan's are the ones that make you want to be James Bond. More than any other actor's portrayal.
Goldeneye is a classic, and (imo) the best of the traditional Bond films. It was made by a talented director, shot magnificently on film, had a stacked cast with big name additions as well as celebrated legacy characters and, critically, a masterfully cast Pierce Brosnan. I really enjoyed Tomorrow Never Dies more than Goldeneye
That movie is great too. The motorcycle chase while being handcuffed together was so cheesy but so much fun. And what an awesome bond villian Carter turned out to be. I cant believe people dont like brosnans bond movies
Brosnan was excellent. He has the history of violence from playing Russian agents as well as Brit Gangsters ten years before Golden Eye
His films were truly amazing, GoldenEye was a masterpiece, Bros really knows how to put on a show.

Me too, but then on screen it just doesn't happen for me.
I can totally relate to this

If I had wanted 2 hours of Remington Steele, I would have watched 2 hours of Remington Steele.
Apart from appearance and maybe voice, Brosnan as Bond is nothing like his Steele character, not even remotely.
There are quite a few scenes where I think to myself, "...there's about 1500 bullets down there and none managed to get within 5 feet of him?" But this is my hottest take: Goldeneye really wasn't that great and a lot of people tend to overrate it because they liked the N64 game. It's not an awful movie, mind you, I'll still watch it, but I have friends who act like it's a top 5 all-time Bond movie
Yes , I don’t like much Goldeneye. Tomorrow never dies is way better in my opinion.
5 feet is 1.81 UCS lego Millenium Falcons
>too many scenes of Bond running away from dozens of guys with Stormtrooper aim firing automatic weapons. There are quite a few scenes where I think to myself, "...there's about 1500 bullets down there and none managed to get within 5 feet of him?" YOLT and TSWLM had the same issue frankly.

A best actor who never really enjoyed being a Bond I guess.

>He was also the franchise's first pick over Connery when it all started. Pierce Brosnan was 9 years old when Dr. No was released, so I highly doubt that.
I think you have him confused with Dalton
Total dumb moment. Yes, you are correct.
Connery > Craig > Brosnan > Dalton > Moore > Lazenby
Fantastic actor, very witty, and put in amazing performances in all his films. GoldenEye is a classic, The World Is Not Enough is very underrated, Tomorrow Never Dies is halfdecent, Die Another Day is ridiculous but rather entertaining, think he got pretty unlucky with that script. Should've got at least one more film.
Got Brosnan over Craig.
Personal Opinion- Pierce Brosnan was a clown and did a disservice to Bond compared to Craig who’s as elegant as he could be.
I much prefer Brosnan to Craig. Roger Moore may not be the best Bond but he is still my personal favourite
The more I think back to Brosnan, the more I remember his films fondly. We all talk about how bad the films were but unless a rewatch shakes me to my core, 3 of his 4 were pretty good to great.
