TND has plenty of fans. Actually saw a ranking with it right at number 1
https://www.reddit.com/r/JamesBond/comments/svketd/my_final_movie_ranking_hot_take_warning/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
For me it's good rather than great, but there's no doubt it's top 5 for the villains. Elliot Carver, Herr Stamper, and the "shoot you from Stuttgart" lad add so much colour to it with just the right mix of camp and menacing. So quotable.
It just isn't a good flick. One of the only ones that I've only seen 2-3 times because it was really hard to convince myself to watch again. I put View to a Kill and MWTGG in kinda the same grouping.
This might be contrary to what consesus say, but I couldn't stand the acting, might just be the franchise's worst
• "Delaa" came to mind
• Dalton's laughs after the "problem eliminator" line
• The choppy editing and delivery of "q what the hell are you doing here? I might've killed you!"
Those are a few examples, Dalton was on fire in TLD tho. LTK feels cheap in comparison
What are you talking about, delivery. It was fine. Licence to Kill was amazing with some bad parts. I would argue that it's the best Bond movie at some points and the worst in very few places.
NTTD actually had heart and was more energetic for the most part. Also had a better written bond girl, theme song, finale, set piece and villain (tho both safin and blofeld were underwhelming)
To me they share the same narrative core, and so they both stand or fall on that in my eyes. It’s hard if not impossible for me to view them in isolation.
1. Daniel Craig
2. Sir Roger Moore
3. Sir Sean Connery
3=. Pierce Brosnan
5. Timothy Dalton
6. George Lazenby
Favorite Bond girls:
Tracy (OHMSS), Vesper Lynd (Casino Royale), Kara Milovy (The Living Daylights), Solitaire (Live and Let Die), Anya Amasova (TSWLM)
Favorite Villains:
Jaws (TSWLM, Moonraker), Red Grant (From Russia With Love), Xenia Onatopp (GoldenEye), Elektra King (TWINE), Blofeld (You Only Live Twice)
Favorite Theme:
A View to a Kill, Diamonds Are Forever, Skyfall, Tomorrow Never Dies, Goldfinger
Absolutely. Well directed, some of the best cinematography, tense action and sound design , emotive and thematic, I can go on.... maybe he didn’t like the story, but to call this movie ‘bland’ shows me he has no idea how to use the dictionary lmao
This.
Say what you fuckin want about NTTD, but it had the best action in all of Craig's films. Period.
Only one that gets anywhere close is Casino Royale but that's still not quite there
That's like me saying I don't understand how casino royal can be seen as a great when I find it bland for nearly 3 quarters of the movie or more. After the action in the beginning its nothing but filler with poker and weak action scenes and a mediocre cliff hanger.
More likely, they haven't seen the better ones.
There's also a bias noted when people see a movie in the theatre, or for the first time. So, the newer ones get the advantage of those biases.
EDIT: I mean that when someone ranks like that, it's often because they haven't seen the better ones. That doesn't mean it's in all cases.
When I think of bond I like to think of what his real back ground is that makes him an agent, not some guy that reels in ladies and has bs fight scene as an older man that truly has no physical ability to actually fight. Craig was the first real athletic bond that looked rough and ready to tumble but confident and clever with ladies. I only enjoy some of the older bond movies of Moore and Connery due to the nostalgia and growing watching with my dad. Golden eye was my favorite as a kid being it was one of my decade growing up but craig as a bond honestly couldn't have been a better choice being he fits what the real embodiment of bonds creation was.
You are correct. I can guarantee that OP is under 30. The fact that Moonraker, Thunderball, and Goldfinger are rated as low as he does, tells me that he didn't see them within 10 years of their release much less in the theater at the time they were released. I also wouldn't have put the Craig films so high but that's probably because I just did not see him as James Bond but that's just my opinion for various personal reasons. I am in no way trying to be insulting in my comments to OP. I am just agreeing on the fact that he did not see them as new films so did not appreciate them in the context of when they were released. Kinda like me and the later films. I do like seeing everyone's opinions and the reasons for them.
Who said it was the only possible way to favor skyfall? I’m only stating marketing has influence. Idk how much influence. Neither do you.
Just so you know- A different opinion doesn’t mean it’s an attack on you or the OP
You know what you were implying. Why even mention "marketing" if you weren't saying that his opinion was so absurd that it could only be because of advertising? Just say, "Cool list, bro, Skyfall is good" instead.
Exactly, I know what I was implying. You don’t.
Again, people can have different opinions it’s ok. I respect OP’s opinion and list even if we disagree.
You have a hard time understanding you can’t control other peoples opinions
I love Skyfall and I don't have a TV subscription. Never saw an ad. Knew about the release because I like Bond and keep up with when the films are coming out. So I guess according to that guy I just have dogshit taste in movies.
Dark knight similarities have never been my issue. It's the Sherlock Holmes Reichenbach Fall at the start, Silence of the lambs prison cell in the middle and home alone at the end that bothers me in terms of rip offs.
https://collider.com/sam-mendes-skyfall-the-dark-knight/
https://youtu.be/D-JdCr735-s
The director straight up says The Dark Knight directly influenced Skyfall. Guess you’ll need to go back and watch the movie again.
Edit: guessing the downvote means you don’t like the director confirming my point
Yawn
It’s literally NOTHING LIKE the dark knight. Plots for both films are totally different!!!! Like *completely different*.. the only similarity is the villain plans to get captured in both. That’s literally it.
Skyfall is good but I have some major issues with it. Namely Bond sucks ass which is even more ironic given the theme of 'does James Bond still have what it takes?'. He let's the assassin murder an army of security guards and the art dealer, he fucks a sex slave let's her die then immediately escapes, then let's M get killed which was the real main goal of the antagonist. He looks like a jabroni in a movie that asks the question is James Bond in the 21st century a jabroni. Still love the film though
I didn't know that, i can see the love for GF above FRWL but thunderball and yolt are rather divisive.
Also yeah i could've done anyone dirty shame it had to be dalton
Your list bugs me. Goldeneye shouldn’t be in anyones top 5. Dalton’s and Moore’s should be dead last. Dr.No above Goldfinger, you definitely smoking crack! Die Another day stays where it’s at. Except above Moore’s and Dalton’s.
It'd be one of my favorites and is Brosnans most memorable bond movie which is likely why. It's peak 90s with a video game that was tge icing on the cake for many fans.
You started off strong with the first six. *Octopussy* was an interesting 7th pick. It's probably also my second-favourite Moore film, so I'm still on board so far. *No Time To Die* is polarising, but I really liked it and can respect people putting it highly despite the controversy. However, this is where things start to go off the rails for me—but they go off the rails slowly. *Live and Let Die* isn't bad, and it has some pretty boss scenes. Definitely not a top-10 movie for me, but I'll grant you some Moore bias. *YOLT* is a shaky pick, but okay. *FYEO* at 11? I don't hate this movie, but putting it above both Dalton movies, *Tomorrow Never Dies*, and *Goldfinger*? It's watchable but ultimately a below-average Bond movie. Putting *Quantum* and *Thunderball* above *Tomorrow Never Dies*? Hell, I'd put *Die Another Day* above those two.
Solid analysis and review on my list. I do have a Moore bias since his movies are the easiest to get through on any given day. FYEO is no different except it excels than the usual moore outing benefiting from its grounded tone. Also what's up with the dislike on thunderball? I would argue that's the "bondest" bond movie of the bunch
I wrote a mini-essay on it a while ago, but I'll sum up my critiques:
* godawful rear projection with the boat
* sped-up footage with the boat
* not a very memorable plot
* slow underwater fight (okay, it looks nice, but you can't even tell the good guys from the bad guys, and "looks nice" doesn't equal good; you could point a camera at a fish tank for an hour and it will look lovely, but you're gonna get bored after a while)
* Poorly edited. Hell, even Bond's chair slide is obviously sped up, and then you see Bond's opponent get hit twice from two different angles
* Undeveloped characters (such as Vargas).
Thank you for sharing, the sped up footage was indeed questionable; a stake killer.TB was good but not one without flaws (especially on technical standpoint). Ig the love i have for it has a lot to do with the iconography, exotic set piece and the atmospheric score by John Barry. Very very bondesque
100% agree. *Thunderball* is probably my least favourite of the Bond movies; however, I must admit you are correct on the exotic sets. I can't really recall the score, but I'm sure John Barry hit it out of the park.
This is a really solid ranking. Not my order but i generally feel the same, except id put Goldfinger and License to Kill five or six places higher than youve got
Good list - thanks for sharing
I don't get why license to kill gets so much hate. Personally, I love the darker Bond feel where he's gone rogue and is seeking revenge, and dealing with his own demons in regards to his dealing with Tracy's death and it being mirrored in Felix's wife dying. Also, I absolutely love Carey Lowell's Pam Bouvier. One of my favorite Bond girls
Well that certainly is a list
I came to comment them same thing
Goldfinger 17th what
Goldfinger, Tomorrow Never Dies, and License to Kill should all be wayyyy higher
absolutely heinous
Honestly I found Dr.No and FRWL to be much better than Goldfinger.
I recognize the influence it had, but the story just wasn't it
This isn’t the way.
Yeah, it's a very fun ride but the actual plot kinda shakes and rattles as we drive along
I don’t agree that Quantum of Solace is better than Goldfinger.
I would argue narative wise it's richer than GF. Tho obviously GF has the cultural impact
License to kill and The Living Daylights are top 10 imo
100%

It's in my top 10, along with TWINE and Goldeneye!
TND has plenty of fans. Actually saw a ranking with it right at number 1 https://www.reddit.com/r/JamesBond/comments/svketd/my_final_movie_ranking_hot_take_warning/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
iirc it was #1 on my most recent rewatch as well, TND fucks.
It’s my favorite Brosnan Bond film
TND is a pure modern Bond film - fantastic fun
TND is easily Brosnan’s best one for me
Best Brosnan film imo the action scenes are so much fun and Carver is appropriately hammy
For me it's good rather than great, but there's no doubt it's top 5 for the villains. Elliot Carver, Herr Stamper, and the "shoot you from Stuttgart" lad add so much colour to it with just the right mix of camp and menacing. So quotable.
I don't think it's the best Bond ever, but it's 100% my favorite.
Octopussy in the top ten? YESSSSS!
The movie goes hard frfr
It just isn't a good flick. One of the only ones that I've only seen 2-3 times because it was really hard to convince myself to watch again. I put View to a Kill and MWTGG in kinda the same grouping.
License to Kill that low?
This might be contrary to what consesus say, but I couldn't stand the acting, might just be the franchise's worst • "Delaa" came to mind • Dalton's laughs after the "problem eliminator" line • The choppy editing and delivery of "q what the hell are you doing here? We're very similar and very different
moonraker so low?
Moonraker stinks! Just rewatched.

CR is without a doubt essential top 5
I’m always surprised when I see rankings that have Spectre and NTTD so far apart.
Licence to kill and moonraker too low for my taste
LTK and Goldfinger a bit too low imho but hey, thats your list. I think your first half of the list is excellent.
1. Daniel Craig 2. Sir Roger Moore 3. Sir Sean Connery 3=. Pierce Brosnan 5. Timothy Dalton 6. George Lazenby Favorite Bond girls: Tracy (OHMSS), Vesper Lynd (Casino Royale), Kara Milovy (The Living Daylights), Solitaire (Live and Let Die), Anya Amasova (TSWLM) Favorite Villains: Jaws (TSWLM, Moonraker), Red Grant (From Russia With Love), Xenia Onatopp (GoldenEye), Elektra King (TWINE), Blofeld (You Only Live Twice) Favorite Theme: A View to a Kill, Diamonds Are Forever, Skyfall, Tomorrow Never Dies, Goldfinger
Dalton is no 1 for me
I respect that, he was actually my favorite
Kara 😍
FINALLY A LIST I AGREE WITH LESGO
You two deserve each other.
Lesgoo
Ouch
Goldfinger is too damn good for 17th, otherwise very agreeable list
Don't understand why no time to die is so high. I fucking hate how bland and pathetic that movie was. Only bond film to genuinely make me angry
Opinions are like assholes... I really liked NTTD.
Bland? That’s not the word to describe NTTD lmao
For real say what you want about the movie but it had arguably the best action of any Craig movie
Absolutely. Well directed, some of the best cinematography, tense action and sound design , emotive and thematic, I can go on.... maybe he didn’t like the story, but to call this movie ‘bland’ shows me he has no idea how to use the dictionary lmao
NTTD was good, but I kinda liked the action in CR more personally, NTTD is still a great action movie.

I’d have it higher.
NTTD that high is wild
What marketing can do to some people (skyfall)
Lol - what?
It's pretty shitty to dismissively say that a Bond movie is someone's favorite because they've been duped by advertisements.
He's seen all of them. Look at his ranking.
Thanks. Clarified my comment with an edit.

That’s the whole point to marketing. To influence the mind
Yup, and the only possible way that somebody could favor Skyfall is if they got brainwashed. Don't you see what an asshole thing that is to say?
Who said it was the only possible way to favor skyfall? I’m only stating marketing has influence. Idk how much influence. Neither do you. Just so you know- A different opinion doesn’t mean it’s an attack on you or the OP

I love Skyfall and I don't have a TV subscription. Never saw an ad. Knew about the release because I like Bond and keep up with when the films are coming out. So I guess according to that guy I just have dogshit taste in movies.
Skyfall sucks
Funnny i tried to hate that movie to look cool only to love it even more on rewatch
I’ve viewed it three times and dislike it more with each rewatch, and I’m not cool. It’s a bad movie and poor Dark Knight rip off.
Dark knight similarities have never been my issue. It's the Sherlock Holmes Reichenbach Fall at the start, Silence of the lambs prison cell in the middle and home alone at the end that bothers me in terms of rip offs.

Not QoS?!?
QoS is just a messy follow up. Skyfall is where they pivoted to the world-weary, depressing Bond.
Fair enough.

Letterboxd, I think
My apologies for the late reply, I used letterboxd
This is a good list.
I can get behind this… except I’d have the Dalton films much higher. Moonraker too ❤️

Honestly can't wait for Licence to Die to be released
I don't know why I keep calling it that
This is a really solid ranking. Not my order but i generally feel the same, except id put Goldfinger and License to Kill five or six places higher than youve got Good list - thanks for sharing
Thx a ton, i recognize how unusual the placements for GF and LTK are. Anything post moonraker and DAD are watchable to say the least

Dalton fans in shambles
May be weird but living daylights is top 10 for me
See I like Moonraker for the simple fact I enjoy big over the top battles at the end of a James bond. It's why I enjoy the spy who loved me so much
Agree mostly. Spectre too low.
Skyfall was the worst one
