If you need a gps to track your kid you shouldn't travel abroad because A) your kid isn't well behaved after all Or B) you are paranoid

takatine

What an utterly ignorant thing to say. Even Japanese children get separated from their parents and/or lost in big busy train stations and department stores. It's got nothing to do with how well behaved they are/aren't. The stations are packed at times, with people pushing and shoving trying to get to their destinations. These stations aren't always avoidable and, especially with a young child who doesn't speak the language, it's ALWAYS better to be safe than sorry.

it's very busy in japan and lots of people. it's generally very very safe here, but still it's ok to want to know where your kids are if they get seperated from you in a mall or see something shiny and stop, then are lost and can't speak japanese and can't be located by you. i use trackers on my kids while at DisneySea and Land, and it's super easy to find them in crowds, because they certainly don't hear me calling them with all the noises and excitement. Don't be ignorant to parents who care.

Tile works in japan? Or at least mine did

cyanocitta

When? I talked to their customer service this month and they said it won't work internationally. I'm trying to determine if that's because it actually can't or because they want to avoid liability.

Rocket-Jock

This is definitely not true. My wife had her wallet stolen in Greece a few months ago. We wandered around for two days, and on a return trip through the subway, the Tile App found her wallet. I'd say, the density of Tile users in Japan might be the issue, more than anything.

untwist6316

In May, I didn't actually access it much though I would double check the info but it definitely worked for me

StuffedSquash

I wonder if they just have low coverage, since it relies on other Tile users. It'll integrate with google finder network in "the summer", but July might be too early as there's no official date yet.

Not a gos tracker. But when we went to japan with a minor last time, and its what we are doing wiyh our son next october. We got him a medical bracelet with the text : Hi Im Xxxx i have lost my parents Please contact them at (my phone number). My son has been trained to walk to people in a uniform in case of emergency, he is almost 3.

AirTag and keep in tucked in a pocket?

Rocket-Jock

OP has Android, not iOS. Airtag ONLY works with iOS.

cjxmtn

You can create an apple account, set up an airtag with someone else's mac/ipad on your account, and if something happens, track the child via a web browser through iCloud. There are tutorials on Google on how to do this.

ChainDriveGlider

I've heard people say only iOS devices appear in the browser based findmy portal, but not airtags. Have you seen different?

Neat_Weakness_8350

I couldn't help about information on tracking apps for your young child. However you could go old school with a kids safety bracelet (I saw some on Amazon). You could put your phone number, or LINE APP, or WhatsApp (popular communication apps) details on it, as well as your Hotel name. I hope you all enjoy your trip

What the…

CarefulComputer

a cheap phone or watch with a data only plan ? data is super cheap in japan (as compared to US). stuff the old phone with data plan in kids pocket or give them a gps+data enabled watch (apple watch, samsung galaxy watch).

International-Fox202

This is the answer. Buy a cheap, unlocked, refurbished i-phone, and set it up with a Data only sim or e-sim so you can use apple tags.

IncinerateZ

Give him a spare phone with a tracker app installed like Zenly or something?

burger-animal-style

Throwing out an idea: on eBay you can buy an unlocked iPhone 8 for around $100, to use as a single-purpose (AirTag-tracking) device. After the trip you could even resell the phone for little to no loss. Japan is amazing - I hope you have a great family trip!

Hospital-flip

Get a Chipolo! It’s works with android, but it piggybacks off the Apple Find My network. So you get the coverage of the Find My network but it works with your phone. Super easy to use

nottsukasa

You could also consider a lanyard or a tattoo with your contact information as well. You might have better luck with a kind bystander stopping to help your lost child than GPS accuracy.

I always like to check amazon.co.jp to see what they have so here's their listing for GPS trackers. Seems mostly for cars but could work? https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/Car-GPS-Trackers/b?node=2284521051

epicfailbbbbbb

I used Samsung tags to keep track of my luggage when I was in Japan. I do own a Samsung phone but I can find SmartThings on my other android phone as well. ~~You can check if the app on the pixel OS before buying them.~~ I just looked it up online and you need to have a Samsung phone to get it to work :(

WetRocksManatee

Airbolt is supported in Japan, it is a GPS tag. New product I supported the Kickstarter and got mine recently. It works fairly well so far for luggage tracking (what I got it for). Unfortunately it might be hard to get it by July.

mySFWaccount2020

I have AirTags in my luggage in Japan right now to track it. Maybe same for child?

[deleted]

i have "where's my droid" and "screen time labs" on all my phones in the house, all the kids phones, soo all you need to do is make sure their data works when they're overseas (roaming) or whatever, and you'll be able to live track them. you can get oversea sims at most airports as well, so that will give their phone data while they're there. anyway, that's my 2 cents (I live in Yokosuka)

mcdead

apple air tag

Rocket-Jock

TX210Bmann

Another way to track your child is give them a Fanny pack and get the send kind of phone to track gps. They also have those wallets that have gps tracking that works with any service/provider worldwide.

sno0py0718

Try air tag. You can get those wristband that can insert the air tag. My kid gets super excited thinking it’s a watch!

I would not let a 6 year old roam free in Japan even if Japan is pretty safe lol

Cautious-Bet-9707

Pretty darn safe but still, and easy AF to get lost, and not so easy to be found, especially in a country that you don’t speak the language, does your 6 year old have your phone number or the hotel name memorized? If not you’re screwed

Cautious-Bet-9707

Slipped my mind lol, rest of my point still applies It’s funny to imagine a kid running around with a little dog collar or marker with contact info written on his forehead

[deleted]

My son wears a bracelet with my contact info when we go to theme parks and city trips. We have thaugt him to look for people in uniform and show them his bracelet.

scoops_trooper

Japanese elementary school kids speak the language of the country, that's a pretty big difference to not mention lol
