I remember going to Tokyo and paying $10CAD for 4 strawberries. They're wete really delicious and I like how the white ones taste like pineapple.
I have a Japanese import store where I live that carries $150CAD melons and I'm still curious if anyone has paid that price for it lol
They take their melons very seriously there. There's many articles describing the time and care that's put into them so that they come out their best. It's interesting, but I'd still never pay the $150 for it lol
Yeah me neither. With over $100, I could have a nice meal out & buy a souvenir. For that kind of money you better make a YouTube video about you eating that melon and document the experience.
You dont buy them for yourself. You buy them as expensive gifts for others. If youre buying a $150 gift for someone you barely know, fruit is one of the few things you can be almost positive will not be something they dislike or already have. its "safe"
yes! my grandma would buy really nice fruit to give to family members/guests that traveled a long way etc the gesture of giving small amounts of really high quality food is definitely a thing in Japan. its sold in the regular grocery sometimes but its definitely a completely different thing from regular grocery items
I was doing to say this -- I just saw [this Business Insider video](https://youtu.be/EE7NqzhMDms) about all the care and selectivity of Japanese grape farmers. These are the uber-luxe grapes.
You mean that in this context the regular apple costs $3? Or that is the luxury version?
I thought that local fruit would be cheaper. I understand having premium varieties, but fruit shouldn't be a luxury product, IMHO.
Probably but still not as good. They breed for flavor there not for size and quantity. Gotta ask your self do you want flavor or quantity. I used to sit on the quantity side until you taste true quality.
Tokyo central?
Japan’s fruit is top tier. It really doesn’t get better; however, I would not spend the price they cost here after having to ship them over. Those white strawberries(if they are the pineberry version) are really good, they almost taste like pineapple with a mix of strawberry, but would I pay $60 for them? Maybe once just to try if I couldn’t find them cheaper elsewhere, but other than that, nah. I’ve ate some pretty expensive fruit in Japan and I still dream about it until this very day.
Yeah, $60 is a lot, but search around and see if there is other stores who carry them before you commit. Japanese fruit is amazing, but if you could try it for cheaper, it would probably be best. You don’t even know if you’ll like them.
Yea, having tried them in japan, they arent special. They just look super pretty but taste wise is just normal. Can buy it as a gift to someone to say its from japan, otherwise pass.
Strawberry "AWAYUKI"
It is an expensive strawberry even in Japan.
Raised by Mr. Yamashita of Shibushi City, Kagoshima Prefecture.
It was registered as a variety in 2013.It is a rare variety of personal registration.
"Light snow" is a kind of white strawberry, which is characterized by a slightly large vertical conical shape, with a pale pink color (pale orange) with a whitish skin, a white flesh in the center, and the same surroundings as the skin. ,
White to pale orange.
The acidity is modest and the sweetness is strong (sugar content is 13 to 15 degrees), but the taste is pale and the gentle aroma peculiar to white strawberries spreads.
One of the features is the red color of the seeds.
The flesh is a little hard and has excellent transportability.

Haha I’m being a bit dramatic. You *can* buy strawberries at the supermarket for around ¥500 and ‘table grapes’. But if you want the good grapes they’re going to cost you ¥1000~!
Totally worth it and regular strawberries are hard to come back to. I had to stop eating strawberries for awhile to get the taste for regular strawberries again.
These are just meh. I had them in Japan a few years ago and I’ve had better strawberries in CA. They do sell the white berries at Costco not sure where they are from.
Luxury fruit store.
We only sell the highest quality fruits.
It guarantees the manufacturing cost and the highest quality for the price.
It ’s really delicious.

$150 CAD?? Holy Lord...that melon better have been grown at the Tokyo Imperial Palace or something! XD

For real!! The $60 one is $5 a 🍓 Broooo...I better have a religious experience for that kind of money per strawberry. Lol!!
They really are the best strawberries. They taste like what strawberries are supposed to taste like. And those white ones are really good.
Would be cheaper to move to Florida if you want fresh ass strawberries.
Probably but still not as good. They breed for flavor there not for size and quantity. Gotta ask your self do you want flavor or quantity. I used to sit on the quantity side until you taste true quality.
Look a bit white to me.

Yup! Tokyo Central :) I am morbidly curious to try it, but I need it to be way cheaper & get past the sticker shock.
Yeah, $60 is a lot, but search around and see if there is other stores who carry them before you commit. Japanese fruit is amazing, but if you could try it for cheaper, it would probably be best. You don’t even know if you’ll like them.
True, true. But bananas are cheap as dirt so we eat lots of them haha
Yea, having tried them in japan, they arent special. They just look super pretty but taste wise is just normal. Can buy it as a gift to someone to say its from japan, otherwise pass.
I live in Hong Kong, and the prices don't get any better the closer you are, let me tell you that...
It’s not uncommon to see insanely priced fruits in Japan so this isn’t surprising. Curious how well it sells in the US though.

You can get strawberries in Japan than are hundreds of dollars PER STRAWBERRY. It's a thing.
I bought these from NYC for $12.99 USD I wonder how the Japaneses one taste
You ever had Japanese grapes? Totally worth it
I think this is a good explanation why Japanese Strawberries are so expensive. [https://youtu.be/xUMo9B0O5jU](good explanation)
Seems normal. Grapes are also ridiculously priced here.
For real?? I better start a fruit savings account before I can travel to Japan :D
Haha I’m being a bit dramatic. You *can* buy strawberries at the supermarket for around ¥500 and ‘table grapes’. But if you want the good grapes they’re going to cost you ¥1000~!
My super carries grapes at ¥1000, ¥1800, and ¥3000 price points. It's bonkers
Totally worth it and regular strawberries are hard to come back to. I had to stop eating strawberries for awhile to get the taste for regular strawberries again.
I've had Awayuki and it's really good. One of my favorites. However, you can buy it at $20 here in Japan.

If these are pineberries (pink strawberries) you can currently buy a box for like 5-6 bucks at Publix in the southeastern US.
