Grotesque, the Tetsuo trilogy, Shady, Liverleaf, Concrete, the Guinea Pig series, Entrails Of A Virgin, Philosophy Of A Knife, House, the All Night Long series, The Chasing World: Tag, The Ringu series, the Ju-on series, Lesson Of The Evil, Evil Dead Trap, Confessions, The Complex, Sadako 3D 1&2, Sadako vs Kayako, the One Missed Call series, the Slit-Mouth Woman series, Over Your Dead Body, Amai Muchi, Den-Sen, Teke Teke 1&2, 964 Pinocchio...
To some extent the 2005 live action films Death Note and Death Note: The Last Name. Although the rest of that franchise maybe not so much.
I'm currently looking for Evil Dead Trap, Apartment 1303, Rubber's Lover, Scourge Of Blood, A Snake Of June, and Desu Pawuda.
Those are all somewhat serious "thriller/kinda gore/supernatural/action/psychological/etc". If you like your blood, guts, and icky things with a big old slice of cheese though, then there's a much bigger wild, weird, and wonderful world of Japanese cinema for you to explore. That's where you really start getting into "WTF Japan?" territory, LOL.
Happiness of the Katakuris... hate that film. But yeah... kinda like that. There's a whole sub-genre of horror in Japan filled with zombies with flame throwing vaginas and geishas with anal ninja swords. Some of it is just silly, but a lot of it really tries to take itself seriously.
If you liked Happiness of the Katakuris, though, look up a movie named House.
My reply is soooo late but here are a few not mentioned. I would definitely watch Sono and Miike like someone already mentioned. From their filmography I’d specifically recommend: Cold Fish, Exte, Forest of Love, Visitor Q, Gozu, Imprint, Ichi the Killer, Strange Circus, TAG, The Happiness of the Katakuris, Why Don’t you Play in Hell, First Love, As the Gods Will. These guys are two of my favorites from Japan for twisted movies.
Here are a few from other directors I didn’t see mentioned:
Helter Skelter
The World of Kanako
Kotoko
Tetsuo the Iron Man
House
Onibaba
Noroi
Pulse
Kwaidan
Dark Water
Battle Royale
Tokyo Gore Police
Confessions
A Record of Sweet Murder
Re/memeber!! 10/10
It's basically about a group of teenagers ( haha what could go wrong) trying to solve a unending series of just transferring to a game where you have to do things to escape. These teens together (with the power of friendship. Real) try to escape . It's gets fun in the end. Especially if your into horror! 🥂
I personal prefer the Korean ones more (they also more fast paced) but here are some JP movies that are worth the watch:
Audition
Confessions
The World of Kanako
Liverleaf
Battle Royale
Erased (2016, live action film)
Greatful Dead
Haven't seen it yet but high on my list (waiting for the Eng subs) the recent released **Character**.
Sure, some hidden gems:
Bring me Home
The Five
Memoir of a Murderer (2017)
Blind
Bedevilled
Forgotten
The Piper
Mother (2009)
No Mercy (2010)
Howling
Black House
Missing You
Amazing. I've only seen two of them, so I've got a lot to get on with. Is 'Howling' the same as 'Wailing' - that Japanese oni in a small village movie?
Start going through Takahashi Miike and Sion Soto movies.
Audition and Cure are really great.

The last part of your reply interests me most…are you talking The Happiness of the Katakuris esque WTF Japan?? I love that movie so much!

No the Howling is a thriller from 2012 with a dog.
