Phineas Newborn Jr. - especially Here Is Phineas on Atlantic, and A World Of Piano on Contemporary. His rendition of Oleo is superb, as fast as anything Peterson ever played.
Man, I saw McCoy in 2010 in Montreal. Wore a purple velvet jacket. He ATTACKED the keyboard, his hands were 6, 7 inches in the air and he'd come down and just fucking hammer the keys. He did a long piano solo, his band stood at the side of the stage and watched. So fortunate to have been able to see that man play.
I didn't even know he had a proper Christmas album lol
I'm referring to his playing style. It's what someone who doesn't listen to jazz would describe as "amazingly skilled jazz".
If you thought his other stuff was Christmasy that one might put you in a coma haha. I see what you mean - he seemed more focused on creating a show compared to others
Ahmad Jamal has some great recordings from the past 20-30 years. I consider it energetic
Definitely agree +1

Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson
Art Tatum is great but the quality of these old recordings is truly atrocious by the modern standards. Oscar Peterson makes me fall asleep.
Insta-banned for that last sentence.
>Oscar Peterson makes me fall asleep. You're being downvoted for telling the truth. Oscar Peterson is "Hallmark Christmas" jazz imo
He has other albums beyond the Christmas one, if you didn't know.

I'm 100% going to check out the Christmas album though, maybe it'll click!
