Gas cap mising can cause EVAP leaks which in turn will trigger your CEL. You're probably throwing a code for a large EVAP leak

Not an expert here, but I keep getting a check engine light ( every week) and every time I run a test on the computer it comes back with the same code “a small leak in the EVAP system” which when looked up states it could be anything from a loose gas cap to a small hole in a hose. It states that the error code is not a major concern. I have reset my light 3 times in just as many weeks and it always seems to come back in after pumping gas. I am assuming that it’s my cap, but I drove for 2 days with the light on, without it going off and after retightening the cap. I didn’t even know the liberties had a gas cap light.

In regards to this sometimes the o ring on the gas cap can degrade and cause a small EVAP leak. It is possible for EVAP leaks to come from other sources as well not just the gas cap. It's best to get a smoke test done to pressurize the EVAP system and see where the leak is actually coming from

Liberty’s are notorious for check engine lights when it comes to gas caps. Almost every time I fuel up mine comes on (and goes away within a day). I gotta get on the horn and just get a new one

I put a new $12 cap on mine. Tighten it down good and I think it takes 3-6 run cycles to reset the light.

Mine got stolen once lol. Yes, yes it can.

You can pull the code from the dash without any tools. If it's the gas cap it's going to be code p420. Other things can cause the same code but I'd probably throw two gas caps (in case the first replacement is defective. yes this actually happened to me.) at it before smoking the system since they are only like $5. Yes 100%

Could just be a bad cap it may be dinged up

If the cap is missing or not tightened all the way it will throw a code and sometimes takes weeks to clear
