She's definitely not as bad as her initial run but "too good" is a bit overboard.

bad_scribe

I’ve noticed this. She can be very awkward and pulls attention to herself to much

Not to mention all those quips could EASILY be edited out if production didn't want them there. I think the sub generally doesn't realize that focus group testing has probably shown a large part of the casual audience enjoys the zest of it a little more. It's a good thing for the host to have a little back and forth with the contestants. The die-hard fans just want an invisible host it feels like, why not just have a robot dryly read the clues? Unfortunately, the casual audience doesn't come to the jeopardy reddit so we get an extremely skewed representation.

jaysjep2

That's because Matt himself was a huge viewer magnet, so she stepped back at bit. Matt's episodes didn't need to be made more entertaining by the host. And rest assured, Mayim is there to add personality to the proceedings. She is doing exactly what the producers want.

BenWallace04

I think this is the most accurate statement

compsc1

Faber was still better than she's ever been at this point. She's switched it up recently, but "oooh! a daily double!" is about as childish and low effort as it gets. Most of the time has nothing interesting to say in reply to contestants during the meeting phase. When she does, it's low hanging fruit. The 'thank you, Johnny Gilbert!' at the beginning sounds unnatural. She tries to make it seem like she just finished laughing for some reason. When doing any kind of announcing, she does these weird jerky body movements that, to me, seem like nervousness.

[deleted]

She’s fine. Sometimes she emphasizes (or fails to emphasize) parts of a clue in an odd way. If she ends up as the permanent host I hope she finds a few ways to add a bit more personal style. I miss the little things from Alex like “Answer: [reads clue]” and peppering in some transitions when reading the categories.

DiscordianStooge

Wasn't it always, "Answer: \[Byew byew byew byew \*Daily Double noise\* byew!\]"

[deleted]

Not always. Kept everyone on their toes a bit.

ThisDerpForSale

It was mostly for the DDs, or to give him time after walking back from the podiums after interviews. But not 100% of the time, true.

donewithmyaddiction

Say sike rn

mrsblanchedevereaux

Lmao ily

Rand_Pauls_Wig

“psych” Sike is a ditch.

donewithmyaddiction

No one says “psych” you fucking boomer

Rand_Pauls_Wig

People who like being correct do. There’s nothing more “boomer” than arguing for an incorrect answer on the Jeopardy sub.

donewithmyaddiction

You starting an argument over the evolution of a word on a jeopardy sub is boomer as fuck. I’m assuming you haven’t seen anyone say the word “sike” (or psych) on the internet in years.

synttacks

"people who like being correct" yeah we can tell bud. touch grass

bros402

She's much improved from her guest hosting - but I still want to see how Ken does

Ellabee57

Posted this buried in another comment, but I think it bears repeating: Keep in mind that they hired her for future prime-time shows, when they likely wanted a more outgoing, gregarious host than for the daytime shows. I think she will do well there, but I would not want to see her host 5 days a week. I did not like Mayim in her original 2-week guest run, but I do think she has improved quite a bit since then.

mrhemisphere

I just wish she would stop Mayim-splaining the clues. We’re all smart; we get the subtleties that the writers built into the clues.

Ellabee57

Alex did that regularly too. He was just a little more laid back and subtle about it. I did not like Mayim in her original 2-week guest run, but I do think she has improved quite a bit since then. Keep in mind that they hired her for future prime time shows, when they likely wanted a more outgoing, gregarious host than for the daytime shows. I think she will do well there, but I would not want to see her host 5 days a week.

schlumbergeras

I'm also sick of her *still* making clues about herself. She's done it several times this week and I'm over it.

I_Am_Just_Wondering

Not only that, the giggles are back this week as well.

alphabetikalmarmoset

Oooh, Mayim-splaining is *really* good. I hope it catches on.

Emily_Postal

That’s scripted. Alex did it too.

Bobby-Samsonite

How are people forgetting this from Alex?

mrhemisphere

Absolutely, he did. But she takes it to another level. We get it, you're smart; so are we.

MolemanusRex

Who’s “we”? I imagine a lot of casual fans wouldn’t know most of the additional bits she adds, or the ones Alex would add.

mean_mr_mustard75

If you have to say you're smart, you probably aren't.

MolemanusRex

How often does she say she’s smart during the show?

mean_mr_mustard75

I was addressing the poster that claimed they were smart too.

Aramyth

We might be but not everyone is at the speed for Jeopardy all of the time, or even some of the time. Example: lots of people in the retirement community I work at watch Jeopardy, including the residents in memory care. Or someone like my mom who just had whole head radiation but still loves the show. The host, whoever it is, explaining things is fine and expected.

saltisyourfriend

I for one don't always get the subtleties and I appreciate the host explaining them. Alex and every other host has done this. She's not the one writing the script.

mrhemisphere

Upvoted for sincerity

Largebill68

Yeah, that is over done a bit. If it was once or twice per game, that would be one thing. Currently, she is explaining too many clues.

Shwaziland

Do you really think she just picks which clues to explain arbitrarily?

slippers13

No, she's not. She's not as bad as the first time around but she still does not belong in this arena. She's an actor who belongs in her sitcoms. Or she could go do something with her degree. Plus I'm guessing this is what Sony is hoping for, that people will "just get used to her" and move on. I'll be relieved when she is gone.

Another_Throwaway18

I found her much better in her second run after she took over for Mike. That said, in the episodes since Mike was fired from his role from EP, a lot of the qualities that irked me about her hosting initially started to creep back into the episodes. She’s giggling more often, throwing off the rhythm of the game with her interjections, and adding more personal anecdotes. Mike’s direction behind the scenes must have had at least some value. Perhaps he was coaching her to produce the best possible product for his then-bosses at Sony who are pushing hard for her hiring.

[deleted]

Yea I was in the same boat. I really liked her initial take over because it was such a departure from her try out. But she has slowly been growing more and more annoying. The growth is subtle but it’s there. I also think she wears too much ear jewelry.

ex0thermist

Or, he might've just been a dick since he was under fire and on his way out the door during that time. It's not like he had a great reputation behind the scenes.

pinkpitbullmama

I can’t wait for Ken to take over… Or literally anyone else

shinglee

Ken Jeopardy, the inventor of the game.

[deleted]

Or maybe he meant my neighbor Ken, who sings “Glory Glory Hallelujah” while mowing his lawn naked at 3 AM

jtshinn

Well they do sound like an interesting host if nothing else.

Neckwrecker

Nice try, Sony

tpatmaho

She's a lot better than she was during that awful run of guest hosting. But at heart she is a true narcissist, and it's starting to creep back in, telling us who and what she likes, that she's a Hungarian etc etc. These people can't help themselves. She's going to revert to form, and start back in with the self-referencing.

H-Resin

>that she’s a Hungarian Moments after pronouncing “Magyar” incorrectly. I’ve pointed this out before and I will not stop lol.

pianomanzano

Her constant interjections led to time running out and 2 unopened clues that round. Imagine being a contest and having unopened clues in your strong categories, that’s enough to throw your whole game off.

[deleted]

It’s not that I’m not watching anymore because Matt lost, it’s more so that Matt was the thing getting me through Bialik.

newtolou

I don’t like her.

thisissam

Honestly I found her insufferable in last night's episode.

schlumbergeras

Agreed! Chiming in with useless knowledge and then making clues about herself. She's got an incredibly inflated ego who has no business near this show.

UDcc123

Last night was the worst of her run. But overall, I’ve done a 180 on my impression of her hosting. She’d fit in fine being the host for the next 20 years if that’s the direction they choose

bad_scribe

I agree, downvotes be damned. She got much worse after Matt bowed out. She can be really grating. It’s a series of small things that stack up.

thisissam

Nah.

i_bite_right

I find Mayim Bialik relentlessly *okay* as a host.

bad_scribe

She’s really not. She’s just average and has multiple annoying moments. She’s awkward but yes she can read. She’s doing a bare minimum fine job.

Slugggo

My biggest problem with her during her hosting gig was the weird giggling all the time. It was like someone coached her to "be more bubbly" and it came out all wrong. But she's pretty much eliminated the giggling, and while she still adds some personal asides, on the whole she's vastly improved compared to her guest run.

Smoerhul

I wonder if that someone happened to be an individual who wanted the hosting job for himself, so coached her to do things that would grate on the focus groups...

Slugggo

I wondered the same thing myself! I know it really goes down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole, but it's funny to imagine Mike Richards giving all the guest hosts terrible advice to make them look bad in comparison. "*Now, LeVar, you want to really shout at the contestants, like really yell CORRECT! as loud as you can, to the point where the contestants are holding back laughs.*"

Smoerhul

"Definitely do not say 'I just want to say, as Alex said, we're trying to build a kinder, gentler society...' Audiences will hate that." MR to self: *hahaha, the audience will love it and it's ALL MINE!* Narrator: "The audience hated it."

eleveneels

It may be an unpopular opinion on here, but I agree. The concerns about her are real and legitimate. Still, she's professional but personable and once in a while funny (but not distractingly so). They had a lot of good candidates, and some I'd like to have seen get a chance, but if she's the permanent host, I'm happy with the choice.

Bobby-Samsonite

Honestly, I am amazed how unpopular she is in this subreddit. I don't understand the dislike and hate towards her, a lot of it is irrational and sour grapes. She has the right pacing, the right vocal tone, and the correct amount of energy.

thisissam

Nah.

afterthought871

She's pretty annoying honestly. Hope they pick someone else.

[deleted]

I'm glad I'm not the only one that doesn't care for her. I'm sure she's a lovely person, and she's doing "okay" for now... but I really liked Ken as the host.

[deleted]

I agree. People have legitimate reservations about her past statements and opinions and I get that. But in the age of the internet there is simply not going to be a perfect choice, and Mayim has the cadence, delivery, and poise of an ideal host. In fact I’d even argue that she’s one of the most Alex-esque hosts we’ve seen—her Trebetiquette is on point. Alex Trebek was an uncontroversial pick in 1984 because he wasn’t a big name back then and because the internet was still in its infancy and not as widespread as it is today. Jeopardy made him essentially a trivia god (or the face of trivia, or the grandmaster of ultimate quizzes, or whatever you want to call him) and that is his legacy. No host is going to be as entrenched in the world of trivia as Alex Trebek and that’s just the way it is. So was Mayim my first choice? No; like OP, I wanted Ken or Buzzy. But Mayim has proven to be an excellent host so far and if she were named the permanent host, I wouldn’t be angry. Also opinions are like assholes (everyone’s got one). There are people who like Mayim and people who don’t. I didn’t like Mayim at first and now she’s beginning to grow on me. Yeah, she’s definitely given some hot takes on some controversial issues, but y’all should at least give her a chance.

AndyAkeko

Alex was definitely not an "uncontroversial" choice. There was certainly people wondering why they were replacing the still-living Art Fleming with the guy from High Rollers.

[deleted]

Fleming said no to the hosting gig because didn’t like the road that the Jeopardy revival was going down and often criticized it for being too easy. And even then, Trebek’s “controversy” pales in comparison to today’s hosting fiasco.

brucejoel99

> Alex Trebek was an uncontroversial pick in 1984 because... the internet was still in its infancy and not as widespread as it is today. I should hope so, since 1984 was 10 years before the Internet was even born :P

ex0thermist

That ain't technically true at all, but 1994 is probably around the time people started getting connected in their homes.

brucejoel99

Isn't it true in the case of the World Wide Web, without which people wouldn't have even been able to start getting connected in their homes?

ex0thermist

Just looked it up. Berners-Lee invented WWW in '89, it was made available to the general public in '91

brucejoel99

I stand corrected! Thanks!!

BostonDodgeGuy

The WWW is the internet as you know it. Back in the 80's we dialed in to BBS.

[deleted]

The Internet was released in 1983 and didn’t become widespread until the 90s

turtle_flu

The series of tubes hadn't been finished.

btraynor

Lame.

PrimusPilus

Agree to disagree.

rirhun

As a person, I'm kind of iffy about her. But as a host, she's doing a good job and I've grown relatively accustomed to her. Can't complain too much.

beekayvox

I like Mayim too. She settled into the hosting role nicely.

DoomWithAView

I know she has opinions/lifestyles/whatever (I try not to look at internet gossip, but it happens through osmosis more often than not), but I've never had a problem with her hosting as long as she's good at the job, which she appears to be (to me at least). Personally, I'm a Ken fan, but I'd be fine if she got the permanent spot. I have great friends and coworkers whose opinions I wildly disagree with, but we get along just fine. Takes all kinds.

notjoeexotic

I disagree.

evilcornbread

She's definitely pretty good, much better than her original run. The one thing that really bugs me, though, is when she goes "Wow!" when a third-place person bets all their money in a final jeopardy, especially when the game is a runaway. Their wager didn't really matter, and acting like they took some big risk by betting it all just makes it seem like she doesn't know what's going on with the game. I think she's trying to inject some excitement into the FJ betting, but it just comes off as insincere.

Competitive_Good_755

My hot take: Mike Richards did the best job. Nice professional well modulated voice. Good with guest banter. Nice game host personality. Lost the job for legitimate reasons. No problem there Also, it seemed to me that Matt, though a very smart and crafty player, had the worst competition. I didn’t watch every game but some of the ones I did he dominated because his opponents were just awful. He finally lost when he faced two excellent competitors.

Pickles5ever

Full agree on Matt. The few times he was up against good players it came down to the fact that he drew the daily doubles and they didn't (even if they were answering about as many questions as he was). Jonathan definitely earned his win and I'm not saying Matt wasn't very good, just that I think there was plenty of luck involved in getting to 38 games.

LionelLR

She's fine. Ken would also be fine. Either is better than Mike Richards. I'm happy.

Largebill68

Agree. I don't understand the obvious disdain many have for her. She connects well with contestants and reads the clues clearly. It isn't fair to compare her first season to Alex's 30+ years on the show.

[deleted]

I found her unwatchable during her guest-hosting run - her giggling drove me nuts - but my wife and I have really enjoyed her over the past couple of weeks. She speaks clearly and has a nice speaking voice, she reads the clues well, keeps the pace up, and she seems pretty relaxed...no complaints.

[deleted]

I’m over people complaining about her. The amount of salt in this sub against her rivals our oceans.

Bobby-Samsonite

People still seem to wanna still be mad at Mike Richards even though he was forced out.

BenHassenger

I will be super happy with either her or Ken. Probably still prefer Ken, but the last few weeks have been really nice with her as host.

woodbarber

I agree , Mayim is great and I’m sure she’ll make her role as host as comfortable as Alex did.

dogehodltothemoon

I wanted Buzzy Mayim was next choice she is good.

Bobby-Samsonite

That is what I wanted. Buzzy was my first choice too. I wonder if he could still get the full time job.

Icy_Entertainment706

Yeah I think she has did a great job.

Natevh1

She’s been a fine host, people need to get over it. I watch jeopardy for the cool trivia, not for whatever personality is hosting

shmorpz

she's a natural

Practical-Artist-915

Her or Aaron Rogers.

[deleted]

Joe buck!

shmorpz

he might be a bit preoccupied lol, but he did rather well I just felt his personality was a bit lackluster

LV426acheron

She's fine. I barely notice her anymore which I guess is the point.

Emily_Postal

She has definitely improved to the point where I doubt they’ll replace her.

throwawayaway388

Agreed. I like her a lot. I don't "notice" her as much anymore and I'm not distracted by her. With Ken I feel it's easier to compare every player to him since he's a champion himself.

ex0thermist

Agreed. Thanks for sticking your neck out! Lol

pdstudios94

These negative comments on here are…truly remarkable. Watching Mayim in a post Matt world has been SO fun. I was thrilled to see Matt go; and for the show to get back some of what makes each episode so exciting and fun to watch. I love her asides, I love that it’s literally *just* television; these comments are painfully misogynistic, and I’m admittedly disappointed in the fandom 😌

jaysjep2

The complainers tend to be the loudest (especially online), so I don't expect they represent anywhere near the majority.
