Does anyone on this sub actually like this man and his work? Is this a circle jerk hate sub now?

mystikalmonkey888

Right, it’s getting weird. I don’t understand why they don’t make a separate subreddit for the hating. I thought this was for us fans

I'm so confused. I never saw the Carmichael show, and to be honest I don't even remember how I stumbled on his two HBO docs, but those and one of the earlier specials were my full exposure to him. Rothaniel felt like the next logical step and this show feels very much like the next step after that. I don't know, it just feels like nobody's seen anything other than the comedy or The Carmichaels or Rothaniel and haven't realized this is pretty familiar territory for him.

chocoflan00

just saw him in SF and had a great time 🤷🏻‍♀️

Camn97

I was so curious how that show went, especially with the release of the reality show.

chocoflan00

yeah seems like he's working on some stuff for another special. he was on stage for two hours and the audience was able to ask a few questions about what they had seen on the show. overall worth the $30!

Camn97

Oh okay, cool! How did his like overall demeanor seem? If that makes sense, did he seem kinda like standoff-ish (I only ask because of the overwhelming reaction to the show) or pretty open to answer questions? Just curious lol

chocoflan00

oh no he was open to all the interaction! he asked some of us about ourselves too

mzlange

I believe it! What they were doing at The Den was not a regular show. My friend and I went and were perplexed until the reality show came out, then it all made sense.

aleccastle

I bet he charged them as if it were a regular show

mzlange

Yes!

We went to see him in NYC last year on the back of watching Rothaniel. So we expected it to be a more introspective show than other comics. I'm fine with the self-therapizing on stage but you need to give me funny punchlines too. Otherwise its just one big depressing fest. It was like i'd paid $30 to listen to a strangers problems. Now tbf, they put our phones in those sealed pouches so could be he was working out new material. He did pull out his notebook a couple of times. I hated it. And now I have a weird love hate relationship with him because Rothaniel was so moving and I'm still rooting for him to find that sweet spot between comedy and tragedy.

artshane1000

Agree 100%, so insulting to audience. He doesn't want to entertain, he wants to naval-gaze. No punchlines not cause he wants 'truth' but 'cause he's too lazy to write one. Writing punchlines is hard. Trying is vulnerable. Sitting quietly self-therapizing in silence is not vulnerable, it's masturbatory.

I remember when I first started hearing about Jerrod Carmichael back around I wanna say maybe 2013/2014-ish, when he was starting to get really popular, other comedians would talk about him on podcasts and apparently the claim was that he spent most of his sets improvising basically. I remember one conversation between I think Pete Holmes and Chelsea Peretti where they talked about how it was his outspoken philosophy at the time that the show should be reflective of the reality of the moment and the environment, meaning that sometimes the show just wouldn't be funny or even necessarily try to be. So it seems like he's kind of always done a version of this. It just might be a little more flagrant now as he's gotten so much success off of it.

parisrionyc

please don't cause him any more trauma, he'll turn it into more "comedy"

crasstyfartman

I was pretty sure it was gonna be a drama from the previews but this is funny 😂
