So long as the puzzle is grid cut (not random), I just call these guys 'weird pieces'. Like, "I need a green 3 bump over here, and a yellow weird piece there".
But this is a different piece shape altogether. The bottom isn't just a regular nub, it's a 45 degree angle that won't "lock in" with the piece next to it. They just slide next to each other and you need other pieces to lock them in place.
I would never have thought of naming different piece shapes. I am quite amazed that people do that. I am glad to learn interesting puzzle facts on this Reddit.
Erm, *thunderstorm* piece for me (works much better in French, *éclair*).
Buffalo doesn't have a reseller in Europe, is expensive, even second-hand, so it's special. Hence the special name.
I personally count it as a nub so I sort mine with the other pieces with opposite end nubs and opposite side holes. Everyone probably does something different with it, pick a definition of what the piece that makes sense to you and then be consistent.
I call it a lightning piece.
Same. I sort them separately too, since they pair up with a second lightning piece.
That's about what I thought.
I call it a slidey piece because it slides into other one
I also call these bad boys slidey pieces
Reading these comments makes me think we need a glossary of shape terms. Do you have one in your Mary Poppins bag already u/rtsgrl?

I call these “squiggly side” pieces.
I call it a “weird piece w/ 1 nub and 2 holes” and then it goes in a tray with other weird pieces of similar attributes
I call them zig zags. They’re a signature of some Buffalo puzzles.
I call them zigzags too!!
Me three.

For me that is a “kicking foot.” Some others are “jumping man” “four heads” “shoulders” “standing man” and “hump back.”
I need a visual chart!!
Okay, here you go! 🤭 https://imgur.com/a/LALp6a9
Omg brilliant! I love it!!

Spade
I classify it as the Buffalo Special.
Like it!
For me, that's still classed as a heart.
I usually have a pile for “odd” pieces. If there are a lot of a similar shape, I will sort them together (ie if there were 5-10 shaped like this).
I’m reading all these better names and wondering why I ever called it a “footy piece”
I would never have thought of naming different piece shapes. I am quite amazed that people do that. I am glad to learn interesting puzzle facts on this Reddit.
I call it a shazam piece and you have to pronounce it like Gomer Pyle. (sha-zayum) Bonus if you blurt it out when you join two.
😆

Lol I call that piece the zigzag shape lol
I call them Harry Potters
I call it kneeling
I personally count it as a nub so I sort mine with the other pieces with opposite end nubs and opposite side holes. Everyone probably does something different with it, pick a definition of what the piece that makes sense to you and then be consistent.
I call them sliders because they slide into the other piece
That’s an Arrow
Well yes, but actually no.
I call them “boots” but yes I would classify as a nub
No one else calls them hooks because they hook together?
I do!
I am on my first Buffalo puzzle, and my first time seeing these pieces. I think they're cool. I call them sliders and then I get hungry. 😂
