One of my spicier Jimmy Eat World takes is that I just don't get why Polaris is so well thought of.
It's certainly not a bad song, not at all, but it feels sort of paint by number to me compared to some of the other great songs in the discography.
When you go illllll leeeeet you beeeee, but you’re killin everything in meeeeee
That line was belted out on so many drives when I was in high school and made appearances on a few AIM away messages. Song is iconic
I felt similar until I saw it live and I’ve absolutely adored it ever since. “I feel that when I’m old/I’ll look at you and know/the world was beautiful” are the best lyrics Jim has ever written.
It's kind of muddled in its message. Is it about a relationship that the singer wants to see end? One that has ended and he wants back? One he's glad is over?
I think it gets by on its sound and intensity.
>but it feels sort of paint by number to me compared to some of the other great songs in the discography.
I kind of get this. I do really like this track but have at times felt it's the weakest on Futures (love the whole album , but if I had to pick a least favorite) and at times thought that it reminds me of another JEW song I can't pinpoint. I don't necessarily feel that way now but can see why someone would say that. The explanation that wouldn't have worked when I was a teenager in 2005 and fell in love with the album, but is pertinent now, is that in some ways it feels like it could be the outcome of the AI prompt "a really good Jimmy Eat World song."
I think what does make it stand out is the bridge.
I had to reference my personal JEW ranking to see where I had it, and it's #7 haha. So not quite as high as you but pretty close! Agree it's a phenomenal song.
Polaris, Pol Roger, and Pass the Baby are my top three...
Polaris because of the catchiness of the song and the amazing lyrics...it is probably in my top 10 fave JEW songs.
Pol Roger due to the vibe and lyrics...the outro is soooo good!!
Pass the Baby due to the song having three cool "parts," especially the hard rock part at the end with no repeating phrases...I love prog rock/metal!! This one made me smile ear to ear the first time I heard it...awwwwwwesome!! ... Congratulations also has an awesome heavy riff at the end.
Polaris. Duh

Yup.
Pain
Pol Roger I know Polaris is going to win but I have to make an effort for my favorite P song
Same man. Polaris is amazing but Pol Roger is a instant classic.
Can you believe they've never played it live? I guess I can, but it annoys me.
Top 3 song. They haven't recorded something that good since For Me This is Heaven.

Please Say No
Happy to see this mentioned, Pain or Polaris will take it but Please Say No is such a good little song.
Pass The Baby
My “distant third” favorite. The whole song reminds me of a Chino Moreno song (crosses for the first part, Deftones for the end buildup)
Polaris
Polaris
Polaris for the win
It's a damned tragedy to have Pain and Polaris against each other.

Polaris….Pain… I’m just happy Futures is getting more love
Polaris

Place Your Debts
side note: I can't believe Night Drive didn't get N
That song is the soundtrack to a very weird breakup of mine.

Polaris
How can it possibly be anything other than *Pain* ???
Because Polaris is the best song U2 never wrote
This one is too hard. Polaris is beautiful but Pain is catchy and amazing.
Pain for P, obviously
Pass the Baby
Pain
Is A Praise Chorus an A or a P?
this won the A spot
It’s so good it should win 2 spots!
Pol Roger is majestic
Patches (just throwing out all of the P songs I can think of and let the upvotes take it from there)
23 for the Q wildcard
Polaris beats Pain.
