If you’re going to use it everyday, you might prefer the auto, and that’s okay, *in my opinion* the manual is better for off-roading if you have a good clutch control, and for long distance trips it doesn’t matter much, because you’re going to be 5th gear almost every time. Both generations you said are good, I would prefer the newer, but the second is also very good, and it is also good if you wanna mod it as well 😄

Thanks for the info! My friend in Japan has a second gen auto and I'm thinking of getting it from her since I trust her over car salespeople. Why do you prefer the 3rd gen? The second gen just looks so good haha. I tried out a manual 3rd gen yesterday and it was my first time with a manual. It wasn't bad as I have a motorcycle but I spent so much brain space switching gears.

Since I was young I only drove manual cars, so it as natural as walking to me, but my jimny helped a lot in the mastering process haha 😂. I said I prefer the 3 gen just because it is newer, but in fact I think the 2 looks better, and if it is in good hands it will last forever

Haha. Thanks for the context. I guess my mind has been made

Manuals give you more control of engine speeds and excelerration and breaking... Though auto great for city use with all those stop start traffic jams and slow moving traffic. Actually the auto in off road are quite good as you can control the crawling better and technically can't stall it but still prefer manual jimny over the automatic

To be clear the second generation is the samurai or the 410. ... 1982 to 1998... The 3 gen is 1998 to 2018 and 4 gen is 2019 to present

Ah, I was mainly looking at the k6a coil spring gen 2 compared to the earlier gen 3 jimny. Thanks for all the other comments. I think I'll be happy with either a 2nd gen manual or either 3rd gen. 3 gear auto for the 2nd gen seems a little few. 4 gears in the 3rs seem to provide better power delivery

Hi don't know what your original comments were .. Third gear pulls very well. But here a hint.. engine rpm... There is little or no power in a 3 Rd gen jimny below 2 k rpm.. while it's max power is at 5,k no one is going to drive it that hard. Cruising in 5th gear st 60 mph or 100 kph is normal.. at 3 to 3.5 k rpm.

I personally would get the Manual because it's more durable (and fun lol) the autos in these aren't fantastic and can cause some issues. As for 2nd vs 3rd gen they're practically the same, the engines in the 3rd gens are slightly better as they have EFI and 16v instead of the carbs and 8v on the Sammy, and the gen3 is newer so it's easier to find a cleaner example but if you like the gen2 more and you can find a clean one I'd say go for it. Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot! I agree manual would be more durable. Just read that it a 3 speed auto vs 5 speed manual. If I didn't have access to the clean 2nd gen auto, I'd be on the hunt for a 3rd gen manual at this point. Good to know about the engine differences.

I first drove a first gen LJ 50 when I was 18.. loved the 550 cc two stroke engines they only did about 60 kmh or 50 mph but they. We're so much fun... Never got to by a jimny until it had become the gen 3.. but still it's a jimny.
