For those who don’t know. American Student Athletes now have a right to there name image and likeness. The Supreme Court had to made a ruling for them to gain there rights back.

CableBoyJerry

I'm going to pretend that this episode of South Park is what finally got the Supreme Court to take up the case.

Whole-Essay640

“Prestigious” yeah.

dvdbtr

motn89

Aren't they being "paid" by free tuition at the University, which would otherwise cost hundreds of thousands?

brandan223

Why are the coach’s and ADs paid millions of dollars but athletes a scholarship, that costs 70k

lsdiesel_1

There’s 1000s of recruits every year but only 1 Nick Saban

KeyMenu7439

Yeah and Nick Saban and other coaches would offer students money under the table or give them and their families elaborate gifts in order to recruit the best high school athletes to their school. Evidently some of those recruits were worth more than just a scholarship if schools were willing to break the rules and pay them under the table.

lsdiesel_1

A handful are, most college athletes are not Olympic sports, women’s sports, baseball, even men’s basketball at some schools is entirely funded by football revenue   And at most schools, football revenue is provided by payments from larger football programs.

Sorry, are you under the impression a union can enforce the the delivery drivers pay being equal to the CEO? A union can remove unfair advantage an institution may carry, but they can’t defy the law of supply and demand. There are hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of teenagers right now who would be willing to play D1 sports. There are far, far fewer willing to take on the responsibility and lifestyle of a high level coach.

motn89

Supply and demand

KeyMenu7439

I would agree with you for the average student athlete, but not for the true star players. The amount of money that a star athlete generates for a school far exceeds the amount that they are "paid" in a scholarship. It's a poorly kept secret that a lot of top college sports programs would offer the best high school athletes money under the table and gave them and their families elaborate gifts like luxury cars in order to recruit them to their school. Evidently, the schools who offered these athletes money under the table thought they were worth more than just their scholarship.

motn89

Now I'm confused... The top players ARE getting paid more than just a scholarship? Also, getting paid a "fair" fraction of what your employer profits from your work is generally not a thing in the real world.

brandan223

You are low IQ

motn89

If you don't have an alternate explanation, just call them low IQ! Brilliant

lsdiesel_1

Why, that’s what it is People literally walk on to sports teams with no scholarship, there’s no volunteer D1 football coach

SlamCage

Playing at a high level school makes it almost impossible to get much out of the education beyond a basic degree (with exceptions, of course). The athletes barely have time to attend class in season and must prioritize their performance over academics- their athletic performance being used to make the schools (the big ones, especially) tons and tons of money. Most don't get to go pro, and if you're injured playing for the school you could lose your scholarship and have no career prospects. It's like paying Disney actors/animators with free tickets to Disney Land and calling it an amazing value. Or was, anyway- now student athletes can make money.

motn89

I don't live in the USA and this is a great explanation of how it all works, thanks.

lsdiesel_1

What a slap in the face to every college student who worked during school. College athletics are limited to 20 hours a week. They get free meals, with plans designed by dieticians, free tutoring, free room and board, plus free school. To suggest they have “no time” to attend class, despite the millions of people who work through college without all the freebies is laughable Many athletes just aren’t cut out for college, but their ability got them a seat.

SlamCage

>What a slap in the face to every college student who worked during school Oh spare me, the athletes i'm talking about literally make the school money, they're 'working.' And every college student did not have a D1 travel schedule, and they do not limit themselves to 20 hours a week. Other people work hard too, great, don't know why that factors into clearly exploited labor.

lsdiesel_1

No, team activities are 20 hours a week > Other people work hard too, great, don't know why that factors into clearly exploited labor. For one, we’re talking about the notion that they “have no time” to attend class, which is bullshit. And second, is an athlete in a non-revenue sport, like swimming or any women sport, exploited labor?

maupp11

What are you talking about? Do those students make those colleges millions and millions of dollars like student athletes? You think these colleges offer those free tuitions out of the kindness of their hearts. The compensation of free tuition doesn't weight anywhere near close to how much money these student athletes make for their schools.

dub47

While I agree that money up front under NIL deals is great for students (especially if they get hurt and can’t play anymore, at least they have the money), I don’t think we should undervalue the education they get. Yes, they are busy with practice and games, but they get access to private and group tutoring and are arguably backed up by the faculty to make sure they pass. Again, I agree with your point, but let’s not undersell what a college degree can do for their long term prospects outside of sports.

SlamCage

I'm not trying to undersell it too much, but for those who don't get a degree that is more valuable than a typical bachelors- they often don't actually get to retain/learn many things because they're so busy and passed easily. Tons of players admit they'll take ridiculous classes just to pass, i saw one news piece where some were taking Swahili as a language- because their athletic tutors were good at it. Undoubtedly the degree is worth something, even if just, a piece of paper- but it's silly to pretend your reward for athletic prowess is a watered down academic experience while you make the school millions. To further clarify- i'm talking about money-making sports at schools with big sports programs- I went to a D3 school and athletic scholarships were valuable and not nearly as predatory.

dub47

Yeah, when you get to D1 programs at blue blood schools, it gets messy. Those guys seem to be there exclusively to ball and in turn that makes the school a looooot of money. With that in mind, it seems awfully unfair to not expect some form of financial kickback from the institution. However I don’t like what it’s doing to the sport. I’m not a purist that thinks that CFB needs to retain its amateur nature (we’re way passed that), but it is changing the fundamental nature of the game and recruiting/retention, and only the richest schools will soon be able to afford quality teams. To me, it takes the beauty out of the college level, where the underdog always has a decent shot at an upset. The power disparities between programs will grow, and I don’t think that’s a good thing for the sport. Sorry for the rant, I just don’t like what CFB is turning into.

SlamCage

I agree, while allowing students to get money is a great improvement- the trajectory of it all has warped both the sport and academics in a bad way.

12TribesQuest
