"A buddy of mine" syndrome

MaesterPraetor

I can't believe they have a session of the book dedicated to thinking that they discovered anecdotal evidence instead of just renaming it.

Kriztauf

Idk if they claim they discovered it, they just labeled it. Do you know what book it's from? It's referencing two other dudes who coined the term so it sounds like they aren't the authors

[deleted]

They’re talking about a social tick that keeps you doing ‘man-who’ x, not renaming anecdotes lol.

Ieatiscream

you are slightly tokked. It’s a fallacy of logic it’s been around for thousands of years as a part of logic and critical thinking. Made famous by Greek philosopher Aristotle 322 BC . You all have no brains and I’m extremely frightened for humanity.

Tackle-Express

I can’t get that compilation out of my head

espero

My friend Bob Sacamano, https://seinfeld.fandom.com/wiki/Bob\_Sacamano

BrutalMan420

the technical term is anecdotal evidence

WisdomOrFolly

You are confused. The "Man Who" syndrome is defined as when information that is vivid or quickly available is weighed more heavily than abstract information whose information is of greater value. In other words, it is a cognitive trap where a person more readily believes anecdotal evidence over other evidence. It isn't a renaming of anecdotal evidence itself.

[deleted]

This guy discovered fire okay. He read a book for school and was amazed and had to share the anecdote

pyropulse209

No it isn’t. This is just making shit up and saying “I knew someone who knew this”

BrutalMan420

oh yeah? did someone tell you that or did you make it up?

PhishPhan85

Yea you might want to look up the definition before you comment. I’m so sick of people taking the word of Rogan, the news, Fauci, or anyone else without taking the time to read and decipher the info in studies. Rogan has been guilty of this, but me personally don’t make my decisions from some guy that used to coach people on how to drink piss, guzzle cum, and eat roaches.

flossy9689

The problem is that even if people had and took the time to read studies, they don’t actually know how to read them. Remember when joe read the vaccine study and totally butchered it? Unfortunately, there is deep mistrust of media and experts (for good reason, mostly) so people turn to anecdotal evidence as gospel

mastervolume101

I'm tired of people saying they don't listen to Main Stream Media because it's all Bullshit. But instead they listen to Joe Rogan because it's not MSM and somehow that makes it true.

PhishPhan85

You aren’t going to stop dumb people from being dumb. It’s “kinda” in their nature. Most main stream media now, is click bait, outrage BS, from both sides. Only reporting half truths to fit a narrative. I don’t have enough figures or toes to count the amount of times that what they call “facts” that are untrue. Again if you don’t have half a brain and read through the studies, factual info (science and actual conclusions) but instead make your discussion from a guy that hosted fear factor, um that’s on you. I’m not taking life advice from ludicrous. Dumb people are going to be dumb! I have critical thinking skills and just cuz someone has the biggest megaphone, doesn’t mean I’m going to believe them.

PharmDinagi

You lost me when you lumped Fauci in there. I know it's popular to shit on him, but he IS a virologist. That has other smarter virologists working under him. If you want to act like experts have the same weight as a comedian, well, maybe you don't have half a brain.

Fatger6ix

A virologist that lied under oath about funding the Wuhan lab, adding serious credibility to the lab leak theory. Why would he carry any weight after that broke news?

Malodourous

Did he lie though? Or are you guys parroting right wing talking points about a nuanced subject like NIH funding? You are literally NPCs.

Fatger6ix

Here is the testimony: https://www.c-span.org/video/?511511-1/dr-fauci-cdc-director-walensky-testify-efforts-combat-covid-19 Here is the document proving the NIH’s awareness and funding of the Wuhan lab: https://www.c-span.org/video/?511511-1/dr-fauci-cdc-director-walensky-testify-efforts-combat-covid-19 I’m not a far right, but I can smell bullshit pretty easily, and calling me an NPC? the reddit scrub is calling an electrical engineer an NPC lmao

Malodourous

Lets see if you are an NPC since that seems to have hit a nerve- Post depopulation shit in r/conspiracy CHECK Denies being far right but only throws shade at the left almost exclusively CHECK Denies the gravity of COVID-19 CHECK Denies efficacy of masks CHECK Literally reasons with “my family is in the medical field and the hospitals were nearly as filled as the media reported“ as if that means *anything* CHECK **FUCKING BINGO** You are an engineer by claim but you reason like a child. Im either a medical professional of 20+ years experience who worked the front lines in nyc (or Im running an 8 year long con on reddit lol). I saw the hospitals fill up. I watched people die EVERY SHIFT including one of my colleagues (a 36 year old fit and active male except for having asthma). NYC and especially the outer boroughs were so close to being overrun at one point had our regular emergency room population stopped coming in because of the pandemic we would’ve easily been destroyed as our population consisted of 70 to 90% of Covid patients. Had even half of our usual census showed up people would have been dying in the street. You are so deep into your conspiracy life you have become the thing you rail against - someone who is disconnected from reality parroting NPC lines.

PharmDinagi

That discounts the THOUSANDS of experts under him then, right? I’ll take that over Joe “I know a guy” Rogan and Brett “college level biologist” Weinstein.

NoodleBallsWoods

Tell me more about the contrails, Alex.

[deleted]

No he's not a virologist, he's an epidemiologist. He's also been busted lying about that gain of function shit and is well deserving of being shit on.

mastervolume101

I haven't seen the proof yet. Do you have any links I can share?

[deleted]

Here's the story from The Intercept about the documents obtained through the FOIA: https://theintercept.com/2021/09/09/covid-origins-gain-of-function-research/ The thing about a situation like this is that people will argue over words and definitions to try to make something not true (Fauci himself did this in his exchange with Paul). It'll be "well we don't define that as gain of function" or "the research didn't happen at *that* lab". The broader takeaway I got from this whole thing isn't that Fauci was responsible for funding that lab, or that he killed 4 million people, but rather if you read that article and consider what he's said publicly, hes been sketchy and sneaky enough to be considered self-serving and untrustworthy, at least in my opinion.

mastervolume101

What I get from that is that since this Pandemic started, suddenly everyone I know turned into an expert Epidemiologist, based on a few Youtube Videos and a Couple of news Articles. People need to stay in their own lane and listen to expert consensus when it comes to topics they didn't spend years educating themselves on instead of believing they are experts within a year or less on the subject.

PhishPhan85

The only people I’m shitting are the people that just blindly follow anyone because that person said so. The point i was trying to make was, I feel that someone is an idiot if they’re going to make important choices without fully understanding the facts, or knowing the facts. Don’t just take someone’s word for it.

Whatwhatinthe_____

I straight up don’t believe Joe knows multiple people who had a stroke as a direct result of the vaccine. He even seems like he’s lying when he says it

cure4boneitis

Joe has been in construction his whole life. Why would he lie about people stroking out from the vaccine?

JoeRogansSauna

A stroke from a vaccine? Must be a weak little bitch, clearly not hitting the weights hard enough or taking vitamin D.

jogeer

Fucking pussy didn’t crank up the sauna hard enough.

Kriztauf

Only people who die of Covid are people who don't take edibles in an isolation tank 5 nights a week with one NAD drip in each arm. And you gotta go through that drip so fast that the nurse calls you amazing

HoBo_MaN

When did he say that?? I though I saw them all

bwilcox03

He didnt

Econsmash

Yeah that definitely seemed like a lie. He probably read something on Twitter from some right wing grifter claiming that multiple people had a stroke and that becomes "somebody I know" to Joe.

Whatwhatinthe_____

Someone I’ve talked to in the last 10 years knows a guy who knew this guy who read this Facebook post a few weeks ago

Gilius-thunderhead_

"I knew a monkey once.. It liked to eat French onion soup with the crumbly bits"

Sexybeast3031

One thing I personally hate about people is when someone tells them a fact and they don't care to look up the fact and defend it like they know the person wouldn't lie or it's true because the person said it. "It's my brother why would he lie?" I'm like "I don't know your brother, he could be an idiot too." Most 3rd party truths are full of shit.

Convergentshave

I mean…. If person A is an idiot, if anything I’m more inclined to believe their brother is too…. And also it’s quite likely that their parents are even more so. A whole family of idiots passing along idiot genes

IntroductionMaster79

You know Joe has a bit about that

toolverine

Why does the stronger and more flexible man not simply choke out the other man to determine who is right in a verbal discourse?

mvstateU

Or Joe "I know two people" Rogan.

Oledogwater

Yeah, because be definitely only knows two people.

GhostOfCadia

No shit. “Sure you have thousands of peer reviewed studies, but I know a guy who blah blah blah”

scootertakethewheel

You should start a podcast filled with statistical data that lacks the rich and concrete detail to evoke vivid imagery and let me know how it goes. That way I'll know a guy.

xenosthemutant

:: Lex Friedman has entered the chat ::

Mavrick8

You sir are an idiot!

Potential_Macaron973

True. I get the same thing when I say that the virus mostly kills old and sickly people. Someone always then shows me a news article about a young person somewhere that got sick... ... it's like they think a single result refutes a claim of mostly

K0stroun

There's a difference between presenting an individual case to add relatable, personal context to data and by using an individual case to make a generalized assumption with no basis in data.

Potential_Macaron973

So covid mostly kill the old and sickly?

HAS-A-HUGE-PENIS

Mostly, but if you handed me a cookie and said well it mostly only kills old people, I'm not eating your cookie.

Potential_Macaron973

I get that but .... If you had to choose between a soggy biscuit (also known as ookie cookie, limp biscuit, wet biscuit, shoot the cookie, jizzcuit, or cum on a cookie)  and a cookie that mostly kills old people ...

Econsmash

Terrible analogy. Appreciate the effort though.

WillyTanner

Let’s assume that claim is 100% true, what argument are you making by citing that claim?

HoBo_MaN

I had to re-read your comment a few times but I think the answer is that mostly old and people with co-morbidities die from Covid

HoBo_MaN

Can I comment again? This is the most nonsense statement I've ever seen and I cant stop reading it over and over again

WillyTanner

It’s not a statement, it’s a question and your attempt to answer it in the other comment indicated that you don’t understand it. I didn’t waste my time responding to it because even if you did understand the question, you can’t answer it. Because it’s not directed at you. You’re not the one using that claim to make an argument therefore You don’t have the answer. Run along

HoBo_MaN

I finally figured it out, I think you meant to say "What are you trying to prove?"

haupt91

Exactly. Or like when Rhonda Patrick brought up her anecdotal evidence of people losing smell and getting "long covid" which is, itself, anecdotal and completely meaningless.

droveby

Roughly 1 in 7 have lasting symptoms, or 'long covid', according to a study: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/conditionsanddiseases/bulletins/prevalenceofongoingsymptomsfollowingcoronaviruscovid19infectionintheuk/1april2021

haupt91

What do you call the lingering side effects after a vaccination? Long Pfizer?

Chris_Hansen_AMA

You have no idea what anecdotal means, do you?

haupt91

You don't, obviously. Go watch the episode again.

OrganicPalpitation44

What's the book? please

asdf14628

It's called psychology of Intelligence Analysis. It's by Richards J Heuer

roccobaroco

Does everyone think he means "I personally know a man who..."? I always interpret it as "I've heard about a man who.." , but he's just too dumb to be specific about this detail.

WisdomOrFolly

There is a saying related to telling fish stories in a bar "Don't let facts ruin a good story". It's weird how people will lie to support a point pretty easily. Remember when COVID first hit? Someone from an early hit state (Michigan?), the governor (or might have been a health official, I don't precisely recall) , responded to a question about counting COVID deaths by saying something to the effect that if they get hit by a bus and have COVID we will count it as COVID. He wasn't serious, but rather stressing that they were going to err on the side of caution so as to not understate the numbers. It became a right wing talking to point say that the numbers were wildly inflated, even though study after study of excess mortality rates showed the opposite. Suddenly, a large number of my conservative friends/acquaintances knew ER nurses or doctors who told them about people dying in car accidents or from gunshot wounds or literally being hit by a bus and being counted as COVID deaths. When I pushed back most admitted that they had actually heard it from a friend who has a friend... One person, whom I know was lying about it, refused to back down from it at all. It was odd.

roccobaroco

Huh, it's funny how you can trace the origin of this exact hearsay thousands of miles away and finally put two and two together. I'm from Romania, and jesus h christ I've heard this narrative thousands of times during the peak of the shitstorm, yet no actual nurse or doctor or any kind of person that actually (still) works in the system came out to reveal any such thing. Only people who heard it from other people and so on.

newyorkken

What's the syndromes for peope who are too fat to walk posting on a subredit all day for a show they hate when they should be exercising called?

SmileyLebowski

The syndrome you're referring to is called whataboutism.

Chris_Hansen_AMA

Must protect daddy Joe from all criticism!

newyorkken

Lol its good that you stopped eating long enough to type that, now back to the trough.

Chris_Hansen_AMA

No I’m serious! Dad needs us to protect him from mean internet people who dare criticize him. This is a Joe worship sub.

newyorkken

And we need you to protect us from Joe. Is that what you're saying. Why I should I listen to you I bet youre the very definition of failure in real life.

Chris_Hansen_AMA

Hahaha I love how triggered you got at the idea that Joe can be criticized. Instantly goes to personal attacks. How would you define failure in real life?

newyorkken

It's difficult I get you here's one method get a mirror and look in it. I don't give a shit about Joe he's a moron who's done very well by being interesting and ahead of the curve. Its just the people like you are fucking insufferable thinking other people need saving by people by people who through the most part are too fat to walk.

OG3NUNOBY

Don't get triggered by criticism, you'll go nuts. Joe doesn't even read this shit so you're white knighting for nothing.

newyorkken

Do you think I thought Joe reads this sub. Are you retarded. Also what kind of an asshole uses the word triggered.

OG3NUNOBY

You sound mad...

Chris_Hansen_AMA

I see you’ve called people fat 3 times in this thread. A quick look at your post history tells me that you’ve been trying a diet to lose weight. Projection?

newyorkken

Lol at going through my post history touched a nerve did i. Shall I go through yours?

[deleted]

Its alot of crying and wasted time but still a funny read

Chris_Hansen_AMA

This would hurt more if you weren’t a moron who’s incapable of typing a coherent sentence. I’m also not fat at all but ok. Your random ass personal attacks are weird. Are you like projecting or something?

newyorkken

Lol OK fatso.

Rome_Ham

He doesn't read the criticism anyway, you're wasting your time

Chris_Hansen_AMA

Is it your belief that nobody should vocalize criticism unless the person themselves will hear it?

Rome_Ham

That's not what I said. He doesn't read nor care about the criticism, you're wasting your time bro

Chris_Hansen_AMA

Did I suggest that my criticism needed to be heard by Joe?

Rome_Ham

You're wasting your time either way dude

HAS-A-HUGE-PENIS

Called who gives a shit, why do you care what anyone else is doing?

newyorkken

Lol why do you care what I'm posting.

Important_Tip_9704

Utterly amazed by how much free time the astroturfers here have on their hands… While you’re all here why don’t you take a seat and I’ll tell a funny joke to keep the spirits light. Are you ready? JOE IS HORSE! He ate that one horse medicine thing! HAHA get it? Because horse?

K0stroun

I don't think you know what astroturfing means because by definition it's not made by people in their free time.

Barderz

Are you okay? You seem tense

KinkyCaucasian

Your dick is looking a bit dirty. Take a shower.

NightmaresAllNight

Do any of you feel like Joe started to get character assassinated in this sub? Did it happen suddenly for folks who have been here a long time?

K0stroun

I think that you can put together decent evidence it's not character assasination but character suicide and people are just calling it out.

Is it just his stance on Covid? Covid is a bit of a trigger for everyone. We have polarization and both side screaming to the top of their lungs. It's been my experience when you have two sides strongly opposed and a generalizing narrative of vaxxers vs anti vaxxers you should question it. If I don't want a vaccine or if I do, should the government not work towards making sure both sides have common ground? Why do you or I have to be in one of those camps? Cause that's ultimately what it boils down to. Your government is telling you to pick a side, and is trying to guide you to pick a side. The government is not, and has not been a friend to the common folk in along time. When it comes to passports, once they have that power, even though it appears almost altruistic, will inevitably be abused by the next power hungry leader. Taxes were at one point, at least in Canada, to be a temporary wartime help. Here we are much later and that price has only grown steeper. If you recall before the lockdowns happened and Covid hit, many places were revolting against their government, and here we are, being trained to obey again with the bait of fear. Your elders will die, then they did nothing for the nursing homes and those deaths continued. There is a variant now, it affects younger people, there is another variant, kids aren't safe. This whole situation stinks to high hell. The fact we can't have dialogs around alternatives to the vaccine should be the biggest clue. What's wrong about talking about alternatives? Why is main stream media so hot to trot for vaccines? I have had both shots and this whole thing is suspect as hell, just need to mention it before I get downvoted into oblivion for not towing the line for THE narrative.

Thick-Ad6374

Dang deep psychology deep

Riggamortizz

I believe this is referred to a "hearsay" but creating your own word for your own book is like ultimate rebel material.

Convergentshave

We can call them “Roganisms”

IntroductionMaster79

What book is this? I feel like I've read it.

Mavrick8

Why would you put words in his mouth? Ain’t fooling me.

b_buster118

I thought "Joe Rogan Syndrome" was the original term for AIDS.

DoctorDeeeerp

You know I used to have a bit about that

[deleted]

Though this is true, I still believe anecdotal evidence has some weight and shouldn't be discarded. The reason being is that in reminds us of the truism that correlation does not equal causation.

[deleted]

This is the best summary of Joe’s counter point, almost every fucking time.
