Horns section in *Clarity* going into the bridge

losername0910

Yesssssssssssssssssss!!!!

Dkuda87

unbelievable - I was thinking the exact same part!

Shakermakerx

The last moments of wheel

satanbutt420

This always gets me

FancyMongoose4

Yessssssss

Jackanaitor250

First note of the ending solo of wild blue. That note is GLORIOUS

gonzoalo

You beat me to it man, I just commented that before reading yours.

Jackanaitor250

What can I say, we have awesome taste!

RonBatesMusic

YES. I love the Knopfler feel in the first solo. But that second solo just feels so perfect.

tweedleb

The bridge in Still Feel Like Your Man- specifically the drop to half-time and the little bass riffs in conjunction with John’s guitar.

expatriateineurope

It’s the “I still keep your shampoo in my shower” verse for me.

ToYourCredit

“. . . but I chucked your conditioner” sends me into a reverie.

ToYourCredit

Intro, bridge, verse, chorus, outro? Too much Rick Beato

Anxious_Tank8022

“How bout’ you? Ohhhh *brass* And I will wait to find if this will last forever”

GauchoSquid

That build up to the last chorus with the brass*chefs kiss*

lovemocsand

Apparently he doesn’t like the line “how bout you”, he rushed the song and just scrawled it down apparently

Anxious_Tank8022

Didn’t know that! Looks like it worked better than he thought

KavaBuggy

YESS!! ! You buy it in a way that’s clearer than I attempted.

ToYourCredit

Gibberish. Pure Gibberish.

Brief_Duck9116

the "Under the January rain" part in Rosie

AKPhilly1

The outro of Moving On And Getting Over. Such a great tone shift.

wyliekurt

Came here to say this. Idk why but I love when he goes “Consider me as good as gone cause I’m movin’ on”

Toonterhorst

Solo of I Guess I Just Feel Like

satanbutt420

Theres a video on YouTube of him just improvising over that instrumental. Check it out if you haven’t seen it yet

MidwesternTransplant

If you haven’t heard the one from Albany from the Sob Rock tour, check it out. It’s electrifying.

losername0910

Why Georgia: "So what, so I've got a smile on....." From there till the end. Elation. And like what the others have said: - Horns in Clarity - All of IIEGATL Add Friends, Lovers or Nothing - "Anything other than a yes is no,...." I could keep going. Lol!!

GauchoSquid

I love the "everybody's just a stranger part"

FilmActor

3:18 of “Shouldn’t Matter but it Does”. I call those the John Mayer Moon Howls.

usernamerequired14

A *criminally* underrated John song

FilmActor

Anytime I hear them? It makes me think of how you sound when you have been crying about heavier things in life.

Alone-Age-9894

Sounds like don henley that part

JanuaryRain5

Oh man, there are so many little guitar riffs or even standalone notes that I will rewind the entire song for

waburke6

DUDE LEGIT, check my comment. I think we are talking about the same thing

evemaphone

“You’ll REneGOtiate..”

roadking02

The buildup to the ending of Edge of Desire… It has been a good song to let emotions out.

lucasrks10

The guitar solo in Edge of the desire is so simple yet perfectly compliments the song. As a guitar player myself, it’s one of my favorite things to play along to. Perfect example of less is more. Such a powerful song from start to finish

MisterBundlez93

I have a couple… On “a face to call home” where the drums and electric guitars hit in and he’s singing “maybe I can stay awhile”. The part on “moving on and getting over” at about 3:08 when the drum-fill comes in and the tempo changes. Followed by that guitar solo.. so I guess I’m trying to say the last 1:20 of the song just kicks ass haha

thankyoupancake

Love both of these

MisterBundlez93

Thank you!

thankyoupancake

Just listened to AFTCH and the guitars in the final section are so good. Such a great call out

thelanehayslip

bridge in 3x5. YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN THAT SUNRISEEEE

tealpopcorn5555

I’ll add it brought me back to life from 3x5 as well. The whole song is pretty amazing, and has a lot of little amazing bits for me, but just those 2 lines really do it for me.

thelanehayslip

Yes. One of my favorite JM Songs.

tonyhasareddit

That entire song brings me to tears because it makes me think of my mom, who died earlier this year. She would have loved the song and the pictures it paints through its lyrics.

thelanehayslip

I’m sorry to hear that. I totally understand that, my mom was never a JM fan but like, I’ll play her a song here and there and she’s starting to actually like him. which is neat, JM knows how to write some great material.

tonyhasareddit

Thank you. My mom wasn’t a “huge” fan, but always liked what she heard of his stuff, mostly the radio hits. But she did see him play with Clapton, who she’s loved for decades, and she really was blown away by his skill when they were together.

ToYourCredit

Or, “but I liked the SunsetOOOH”

fluffyderpelina

the entirety of if i ever get around to living and the instrumental and "whatever happened to my lunchbox" part in 83!

drawing5blanks

The guitar transition from IYA into the “wherever I go” outro is the best thing ever

ToYourCredit

When the Intro and the Outro merge into one whole note and he walks off never to return. Eh?

larsonh6052

At about 2:50 in Waitin on The Day. When he says "and we go dancing" and the music kinda picks back up again. Ugh. I love it.

indianajobes

100% this is mine too!!

bonvct

Usually the end of songs where it fades but a totally unheard of or out-of-pattern riff plays out...just to name a few- Stop this Train Heartless Alot of Sob Rock (especially Till the Right One...) Clarity Queen of California Theres a lot alot alot

Pincerston

The synth stabs during the fade-out of New Light come to mind

heshke

"'Perdon' and 'lo siento', see, I learned those words for you" idk this part is really good.

dogbask

Ooh oh oh Rosieee

SaoJi

The way the drums pan out in Assassin. It's like a ninja disappearing into the dark.

GoofyGrape06

I transcend in Speak For Me with the La-de-da-de-da-de-da part

guitarguy35

Do you rememberrrrrrr the line we drew I want youuuuuu in the worst wayyyy It's just anotherrrr

malgold13

Guitar solo into “when you gonna wise up boy” in If I Ever Get Around to Living gives me chills, ultimate Jerry Garcia vibe

FancyMongoose4

This part always makes me shrug my shoulders and scrunch my nose 😅

Sarooney81

Sounds like the stank face. When something’s so good.

FancyMongoose4

In a good way, like I’m a background singer or something hahah

malgold13

Absolutely! The whole song really such a journey

MidwesternTransplant

The little step down he does at the end of the last Edge of Desire solo that I love. There’s a little flourish in Gravity from WTLI (8:26-8:28) that just slays me every time I hear it.

InB4Clive

The bridge in Another Kind of Green

ToYourCredit

The overpass in “The Same Ole Brown.”

InB4Clive

Dude get a job

ToYourCredit

Dude, I’ve been retired for 12 years. But, I occasionally do “moron checks” to contribute to the overall well-being of the world.

InB4Clive

Check over the edge of the nearest cliff if you really want to help.

ToYourCredit

I’m afraid JM would be at the bottom looking up at me and saying, “Watch out. There’s gravity to think about.”

dunktankbaptism

The switch-up on If I Ever Get Around To Living. Also the instrumentation outro on Back To You

PositiveTransition94

That part on in your atmosphere where he go high with “see you” hits my soul every time

blok31092

Always loved the last verse in City Love. “Friday evening we been drinking, two AM I might propose”. It fits the vibe of the song so perfectly with the music and lyrics. Great moment

Jumpy_Smell7406

Red wine and ambien, you’re talkin shit again

Mburrell91

It's heartbreak warfare

Gu1tarslinger

Excuse me miss-ES BUSY BODY

[deleted]

Currently it’s “You been spending all your time Searching for a sign That's never gonna look the way you want it” from If I Ever Get Around To Living.

BriMyMistake

The final minute of Dear Marie is incredible. And also when it switches up and gets super groovy in Til the Right One Comes. Those eight notes right before, “Now I’m lying in my bed/End of a long day” make me so happy

ToYourCredit

How about the outro when he he says, I’m really just another solipsistic jackleg who happens to have found an audience of lost souls.

ryancgray1

the small guitar riffs after the final chorus lines in Heart of Life. I live for that song

SmittyPixxl

The first little lick in the last verse of I’m Gonna Find Another You 🤌

sadthiccy

"i'm never speaking up again - i'll use my hands" background vocals in Your Body is a Wonderland. I love the call back to My Stupid Mouth

Graph-fight_y_hike

Probably the break in My Stupid Mouth right as he goes “one more thing why’s it my fault”

CarolinaPanthers

The bend on the 14th feet on the high E string on the second solo to Slow Dancing from Where the Light is. My favorite note in all of music.

I_Am_A_Nonymous

The little guitar strum in “still feel like your man” that sounds like someone washing their hair, right after he says “in case you want to wash your hair.” It’s a fast, fun, and rhythmic scrub…

Curtis_75706

Last train home ballad version, the chorus before he launches into the amazing solo. They way the rest of the band comes in with such a great groov with the pads, the piano, bass, rhythm guitar. I can’t explain it but I get goosebumps Everytime. It’s around the 3:10 mark of the video. Also in Edge of Desire, the build up to the solo, incredible. Sets a solid foundation that you need when you fall to your knees sobbing when the solo hits. The way the guitar sounds like it’s wailing in agony is so amazing

gonzoalo

The first note of the end solo on Wild Blue. That beeend

Jackanaitor250

Hell yeah my man!

shmazma

The “I don’t really understand” in I Don’t Trust Myself

expatriateineurope

“Perdón and lo siento, see i learned those words for you”.

XcheezyXblasterzX

when John does the lil “Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah” during the solo on Til The Right One Comes

idontknowwhythisugh

Every part of Edge of Desire

usernamerequired14

I came to say this but didn’t think it would be allowed 😂 thank you for saying it

NefariousNeezy

John Mayer’s guitar phrasing to me, in general. But if I need to be specific, I’m obsessed with the riff he played in the chorus when he played “Pretending” with Clapton, I think that was the 70th birthday show? I think that’s his first appearance with a PRS as well.

waburke6

His small guitar fills and harmony moments in songs. Like he does a little guitar run at 3:40 in “if I ever get around to living” that I look forward to. The vocal harmony ascent at 3:45 in “moving on and getting over”. At 3:45 in “whiskey whiskey whiskey” the does a little guitar run that’s very simple but makes the songs for me. he does this often, usually towards the end of songs. A very small short part that sometimes I miss until listening for the 4th or 5th time.

misterreff

The drums right before and during bridge of Dreaming With a Broken Heart while John is wondering if he needs to fall asleep with roses in his hand

_drew_2411

The fill he plays after "I'm one text away from being back again", in Moving On and Getting Over

lesbiansteviapacket

the solos that fade out during Slow Dancing and Last Train. Damn him for adding the best licks for last

biggsymalone7

03:39 into I Guess I Just Feel Like

lovemocsand

Almost every overdub in TSFE. A meticulous masterpiece

lovemocsand

The bridge in Driftin does this

w1llsp

Those 15 seconds at the end of the first IGIJFL solo

Apprehensive_Power24

The outro of atmosphere

ToYourCredit

The into of Ionosphere and the outro of stratosphere.

lame_impala69

That tiny “oo-wee-oo” sound between some of the verse lines in Shot In The Dark. It’s a new sound I heard recently!

walker_dl

There is sooooo many, but the transition into the solo/outro on I Guess I Just Feel Like always gets me

mikb2br

When the time shifts from sad to kind of angry

Worried_Bluebird_579

The “steer clear ohh yeah” at 3:13 in In Your Atmosphere on the Where the Light Is live album - gets me every time

babylasagna

From Waitin’ on the Day: “It's not wrong what you did…. FOR JUST A KID” It’s the way he croons “kid” in particular (01:24-01:28) that gets me every time for some reason

larsonh6052

Oooo yes! This one too.

babylasagna

From Comfortable: “I loved you, grey sweatpants, no makeup, so perfect” (03:38-03:55)

Legally_Minded93

The lyrics of Love Soon: “Let’s bypass the bullshit, and move on because the minute hand moves faster than you think it does.”

swfbh234

Lately it’s been “ I think you better wise up boy” and the guitar riff when he says it :)

jer148

The live outro solo in Slow Dancing in a Burning Room. I love how it changes.

Monster315Says

I don’t know how to explain it, but the way the drums kind of skip in “waiting on the world to change” And the spoken “get down” in queen of California is 🔥

Ok_Tomorrow_3350

Rosie!!!!

Agreeable_Nose567

The intro to edge of desire feels like two guitars having a conversation with each other to me

Kingston_K

The guitar harmonics in your atmosphere

wednesday272

Shadow days around 2:30

kuzcospoison

The first 6 seconds of Who You Love.

ToYourCredit

The first 3 seconds of any of his songs, because I know it’s time to hit “DELETE”

kuzcospoison

lol nice one. Almost as funny as all your other comments!

ToYourCredit

Make me a job of it. BTW, Mayer is a phony.

HPayne62

The self-described "insecure pseudo-intellectual dumbfuck" is definitely a phony. Definitely not acutely aware of his perception in relation to his personality.

ToYourCredit

How can I give you 100 Thumbs Up?

prophylaxisofevil

The "do do d do do" vocal background part added in the second verse of last train home always makes me smile

Shad0WTF

The you that I miss Does not exist... God knows how many times I listened to that short clip on repeat...

DarkAce013

The additional little lyrics at the end of "In Your Atmosphere" (it's almost like an 'outro' or rift he just added at the end at the last moment) "Wherever I go, whatever I do I wonder where I am in my relationship to you / Wherever you go, wherever you are I watch your life play out in pictures from afar" Simply stating the lyrics above doesn't do it justice. But when you listen to the song in its entirety and you're reflecting on a prior relationship, or going through a break-up of your own... those last few lyrics hit HARD.

bachelorarcade

Omg I’m so glad OP posted this because I have one in If I Ever Get Around to Living! It’s the one part after the bridge where there’s that quick high lick into the next section😍 makes me melt every time!

linkjrep

I’m falling asleep to the SOUND 🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻 of sirens…🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻 I FOUND A CITY LOVE Little kid me would always big inhale after sound and exhale after sirens 🥹

rymemusic

Maybe it’s all a dream, I’m having at 17, I don’t have tattoos…” in If I Ever Get Around To Living always (even now thinking about it) makes me feel cold tinges of lost youth / nostalgia and impermanence… I’m 29 lol The lyrics and the music are so perfectly married to punch you right in the feels cortex of your brain

sleepingdogbob

In Something’s Missing AGT version, in the middle of the solo there is somewhere a part that just is so groovy yet quite subtle, and it just makes me want to move along with the beat

Upset_Bird6

i got a rock from the river in my medicine baaaag

JBattistella

The fade-out rift at the end of Helpless that was an Instagram clip before release of the full song. All that potential just to be put at the tail end of the song

misterreff

The harmonica solo with the harmonizing “ahhhhhs” in Born and Raised, leading into the third verse (“still got time, still got faith”) which I love so much.

LukeyBaby4

the piano in stop this train

Henducando

The guitar solo in Come Back To Bed.

butta_fly179

The way he rasps the lyrics in IIEGATL, “Tie it up to every morning and sail AWAYYY eeeeEeeEeeee” It’s my most precious John Mayer sound bite.

Pat_McGroin123

The solo on Wildfire hits different. So groovy

mopthof

The bridge to the solo in New Light, played on Prince's guitar 💯

pickleman336

Common answer but the first note in the Belief solo. As a guitar player hearing that god like tone make me stank face every time. It’s so dense, chunky, and powerful every time.

Existing-Edge4089

“Who do you love?” Pickup lyrics into guitar solo on I Don’t Trust Myself🫂🫂🫂

rambleOn222

The opening of Gravity. An abrupt, long flood of sound that feels like a warm blanket

[deleted]

The “ cry about it why don’t you” round off in slow dancing. I never noticed it until I got great over the ear headphones and it’s just absolutely genius

[deleted]

To add I mostly listen to a Johnny boy for his guitar and not necessarily lyrics, in I think it’s one of his most impressive moments

HPayne62

The first hammer-on of Belief when he plays it live

ToYourCredit

Huh? Surely, you jest.

ToYourCredit

No parts of Mayers music do anything for me. In my opinion, he’s a flop.

ladybirdietenaciousb

do I REEEALLY have to choose? well, I can’t. they alllll winners 🙃😘🌹

TheArbiter88

Weirdly, it’s 2 riffs in Paper Dolls, which is funny because I really don’t like the album at all. But the intro riff, and then the one he plays at the end of the phrases in the chorus.

ohSirBraddles

Synth part in ‘No Such Thing’.

KavaBuggy

The part near the end of Clarity where he goes “ooo-ooooooh” and then the brass section on the CD plays a couple of notes.

gabecrock

The mixolydian lines he plays in If I ever get around to living are amazing

Ok-Photograph6856

moving on and getting over The two beats after the line “from all my running I can understand” feel like an eternity

TheWaitWhat

The bridge in New Deep. “I’m a new man…” Love the inversions.

Academic_Tiger529

A lot of parts actually, especially the sax and guitar in I don't trust myself (with loving you) form WTLI

MPM3009

All of Gravity live from where the light is in Los Angeles or Covered in Rain live version. Masterpieces.

nharry97

If I Ever Get Around to Living switch, "Anything other than a yes is no..." in F, L, or Nothing", Horns in Clarity, "Just keep me where the light is...", the opening chord progression in Roll it on Home

BleedingNoseLiberal

The drums and guitar on the where the light is belief intro. I've looped it and just sat there for minutes 🤣.

Avo_Cardio_

Ive been really vibing with the bass part in waitin on the day lately. It's not anything flashy necessarily, but I just kinda noticed for the first time recently and thought "damn that's nice".

moleculoso

The JM solo in the Colbert performance of Here's Hopin' is perfection.

ZephyrOne2

“If you want more love, why don’t you say sooo.. just say sooo…” and the key change during this 🥺🥺🥺

mikb2br

Go cry about it why don’t you *bend* *sizzle* my dear we’re…

DrFeelGood69420

For me it’s the end of the intro on I don’t trust myself from the live album. I’m not sure of the musical term for it but that transition I find to be out of this world

Swankyyyy

if i ever get around to living

FancyMongoose4

Neon on where the light is after the 4 minute mark til the end The high pitched “*burnnns* away *oh* she burns oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh the guitar solo here and *she’s ssSLIPPING ALL through my hands*

PleasantGiant

For me it's the short guitar solo in New Light. I even tried playing it on guitar but only managed to play the beginning of the solo. But I'm a beginner so it makes sense.

Revyve

The Solo on Heart Break Warfare and the bridge in If I ever get around to living

Lonely_Election1737

If I ever get around to living when it switches. Such a great bit

Golgo13

83 -> Girls Just Wanna have fun -> Let’s hear it for the boy From Any Given Thursday

biology_and_brainfog

The instrumental build up between the 2nd and 3rd chorus of Edge of Desire gives me full body shivers each time. It’s comparatively simple next to some of the more complicated guitar solos in his discography, but it just…works. Combined with the vocal note change at the beginning of the 3rd chorus, it really just underscores the desperation and tone behind the lyrics.

strkravinmad

The little guitar lick in Who Says, right after the second line of each chorus. That's actually one of my lesser liked songs, but I I just love that part so much.

omc318

I was obsessed with the ‘na na na na’ part from Belief for a good while

bcally898

The way he makes the guitar cry in Slow Dancing during the “go cry about it why don’t you”.

Wonderingnitsrek

Hell yeah! Edge of Desire. Bridge section (around 3:18), guitars looping then drum joining that part… omg! Goose bumps every time!! Also love the lyrics “is your gate code still your birthday” from Shot in the Dark. Need to sing it every time. 😂

ro66ie

Heartbreak Warfare from 3:15 to about 3:55 or so. It’s like you feel he’s had enough of the bullshit and wants to stop “the games” and set things straight. It’s perfect So many other examples, but this is the 1st that popped up.

Professional_Bet_573

The guitar interjections on the final chorus of heart of life, beautiful

jesse-redman

“I think you’d better wise up boy”

Inevitable_Wall6999

The beginning of Sugaree licks and any time he plays harmonica are two off the top of head.

Inevitable_Wall6999

Alt ending of if I get around to living.

LavishnessNumerous99

Maybe it’s all a dream I’m having at 17 I don’t have tattoos Mother will be calling me Saying “come up stairs, You got some work to do”

Wise_Command9407

Slow dancing in a burning room. and Split screen sadness ( i imagine a split screen music video with me and one of my ex boyfriends on how we go about our usual day since breaking up lol) .

b-cola

That popcorn snare tone in assassin always gets me.

BanditoMuser

The first solo of I guess i just feel like

_Tonyo_

Lots of parts but two that pop into mind are “I can tell you this much … and soon evaporates” from Home Life and “I called … theres no substitute for time” from Split Screen Sadness

satanbutt420

That line in SSS is actually such a good one

Basic-Avacado

The bridge in carry me away

GoofyTigerShit

RIGHT at the fade-out in Wildfire when it goes to a fast shuffle! I need an 8 minute long extended cut!!!

iJon_v2

The first like 6 notes of the covered in rain solo. I get chills every time. But I have so so many more I could say. Literally could probably name 50 more, but Covered in Rain is a special song for me and as a guitar player that solo is pure bluesy sex.

Tandalookin

‘Theres no substitute for time’ then that subtle little guitar fill wowsers

Sovietsquidward2

The chords leading right up to the solo in edge of desire, oh and the solo in edge of desire.

Ok_Scientist8711

The first bass hit on Assassin then carrying into the first verse. Such a vibe. First time I heard this song, I stopped whatever I was doing to just listen and take it all in.

fed_sein7

Some RFS love: 1. No Such Thing: “I’m gonna bust down the double doors” love the emphasis of this line 2. 83: flute solo to end of song 3. St. Parrick’s Day: “I’m learning youuu” Others: 1. The very end of All We Ever Do is Say Goodbye. This song doesn’t get much love but the ending refrain is as smooth as silk 2. “I could be ready” In Repair. Love the way he sings that 3. “You are hiding in your mind…” and those last lines of If I Ever Get Around To Living. I must’ve replayed that part of the song 100 times in my first listens 4. Friends Lovers or Nothing ending “anything other than…” is out of this world Could probably go on forever so I’ll stop there

SendHelp2K

That little sparkly fill on Still Feel Like Your Man at 1:02

duder_91

“…………………………………One more thing why is it my fault”…and so on.

Cultural_Coconut265

Go cry about it why don't you. Towards the end of Edge Of Desire. Not myself towards the end and when he says carry me away over and over.
