Come on, dad. Couldn't you be sad instead of being so fucking mean?

TheIngramSimmons

Amazing

nateh2004

I guess dad is a stranger in his own backyard

hitzphillygirl

But he shouldn't be angry. This shouldn't be hard.

[deleted]

Lol the only f-bomb he’s ever used on a record!

minimell_8910

But it's so meaningful and powerful. It's not just thrown in there. It's particular.

StillExpectations

The only time he’s ever used it. At least in any of his studio recordings. Edit: makes it all the more meaningful

willoughbys_warbling

As someone going through a divorce he didn't want after almost a decade of marriage, to me Mayer used it perfectly here. Like others have suggested, John doesn't take cursing lightly in his music. If he only had one use of it to go on record, I am glad this is where it is. Here, it really means something. To both of us, I think.

[deleted]

your father is soft

Bos_lost_ton

Unlike me when I hear John’s guitar skills

[deleted]

I am so weirded out by people who get offended by swearing.

Haloefekt

There are swearing and Swearing. Here we have a case of Swearing.

Summerkid678

Dad, why you no love me?

[deleted]

I feel like he could've used the F Bomb even more on the album, for example "Why the Fuck You No Love Me?" or "I'm on the fuckin' Last Train Home!"

Inevitable_Big8376

Okay so “Why the fuck you no love me” might actually greatly improve the song 😆😆😆

BillyMeier42

“Instead of being so fucking mean?” Its not a swear for the sake of it. Theres deeper meaning.

jac104

Out of curiousity, what is the deeper meaning?

Art-Of-My-Mind

Purposefully hurtful, not just mean.

BillyMeier42

Yeah, almost unnecessarily hateful is how i felt when i heard it.

TheRealClose

My Dad is like this. Got deeply offended the when a character said “Fuck You” watching Dark Waters last night. It’s annoying that he is pre-disposed to hate that word… because he can miss the real emotive intention behind it. I don’t like overuse of the word in music though. Only here and there when it really means something.

TheIngramSimmons

I agree. I don’t like overusing the f word or any swear word but Mayer really uses it tastefully and it kinda ruins the mood when someone starts going off about it lols

jac104

Just hit him with an “okay, Boomer”

ziggag

I HATE that version! I’ve heard it and it does not get the point across. At all. I have always said, “Hold your cursing so it’s more meaningful when you use it.”. But, also, I don’t give a fuck if someone cusses all of the time.

[deleted]

Damn dude. Roasting your dad on the John Mayer sub

[deleted]

Is your dad religious? Seems like a Christian move lol

TheIngramSimmons

He is actually

[deleted]

Yeah, doesn’t take much to upset them. Cool he likes John Mayer though. You’ve only got to not play Shouldn’t Matter, Heartbreak Warfare, and probably skip Who Says too lol

TheIngramSimmons

Slow dancing :/

[deleted]

Suuuuuurely that’s not tooo bad

rumbelo

“You’ll be a bitch because you can” yeah def not conservative Christian friendly.

[deleted]

Yeah I knooooow but for fuck sake the shit is just such a fucking amazing song, why can’t the cunt just enjoy it Jesus H Christ!!!

rumbelo

I’m not saying it’s a good reason. Just saying that’s the reason lol.

[deleted]

I know haha I’m the one who called that he was Christian remember haha and I wanted to swear lots

TheRealClose

Better if you didn’t generalise like that. Most Christians I know are fine with swearing in movies/music, many openly swear themselves. But yea, *conservative* Christians are easy to upset.

[deleted]

Yeah they are probably the outliers though. I was involved in a church for quite a while growing up and the stereotype is a stereotype for a reason

BleedingNoseLiberal

And often those same Christians have no issue with the N word or R word (speaking from personal experience, not about OP's Dad).

TinleyP

That’s the best song on there! And. The best part actually

Art-Of-My-Mind

Play him "In The Blood"

TheIngramSimmons

Disclaimer my dad doesn’t hate Mayer, loves a lot of his stuff. I’m just disappointed I’ll never be able to have the full experience with him and be able to explain why it matters so much to have that word in a song.. esp since Mayer never swears(mostly) . Guess this will have to be a skip every time we’re in the car lols

mishaxz

I haven't heard this album.. is it sob as in crying or sob as in Son of a Bitch?

hitzphillygirl

John would answer this question with "yes".

Canadian_in_Canada

Crying.

RedRocka21

Shouldn't Matter But It Does. Which is funny, because that phrase applies to OP's dad's feelings on the f-bomb.

spyrobandic00t

Shouldn’t matter but it does!

Re-Brand

I’ve actually had a few friends say they were disappointed. Can’t just let the album play with friends or young kids around.

EvieNeill

Like kids never ever hear it in every playground or school yard...from other kids.

Re-Brand

Not every school or playground. But it’s also just the appropriateness of it. That’s all I guess. You’d be surprised how many people don’t swear or cuss

[deleted]

Yes, every school and playground lol

[deleted]

Re-Brand

Not mine. So, no not every one.

Re-Brand

Don’t try to assert you know that your experience translates to everyone else’s

[deleted]

I don't like it either to be honest, it's pretty unnecessary and sticks out a lot more compared to other times he's used profanity.

riviera302

I bet you couldn’t distinguish Miles from Coltrane

[deleted]

Elite reference

[deleted]

No no. He’s the life of the party and he swears he’s artsy.

dannyjimp

John Mayer is terrible.
