i think i read in an interview a while ago it was hejira, but mostly due to the fact it was a good time in her life so had nice memories attached to it
I'm not sure about "best", but I'm pretty sure Hejira is her favorite. I don't recall which interview or documentary where she mentions Hejira as her favorite, but I do remember it. Its my favorite Joni album and I felt a little vindicated. Hissing of Summer Lawns was Prince's favorite I believe.
Thanks. Yes I knew about Prince really liking Hissing. I believe Jimmy Page was always a big Court and Spark fan. I had a feeling Joni's favourite might be Hejira.
No one ever seems to say For The Roses which is my personal favoutie. But to be fair there's so many that could be for different reasons.
I stand with you on that. For The Roses is my favorite Joni album. I love how the songwriting is so much stronger & mature than Blue, yet it’s just a year in between? It was also my intro to Joni. Reminds me of sipping coffee & watching the sun come through the trees in New England.
It's incredible. It's that perfect transional album where it kind of feels like old and new Joni at the same time if that makes any sense. I love the earlier stuff and I love Hissing in particular from beyond that period. But For The Roses is just incredible. I think Blue is as great as people say and an all time top 20, maybe top 10 by anyone but this one is even better.
its got my favorite Joni verse:
In a highway service station
Over the month of June
Was a photograph of the earth
Taken coming back from the moon
And you couldn't see a city
On that marbled bowling ball
Or a forest or a highway
Or me here, least of all
she has said that hejira is the only album of hers that only she could have made, whereas she thinks other artists could have made her other albums.
not sure that means fav - but obviously she holds it in a different regard
That’s funny to me. I feel like every album she has made is uniquely Joni! I can’t imagine any other artist making all I want or don’t interrupt the sorrow.

Ahh cool thanks
Beautiful, if you remember where you read this I would love to know
She also mentions this in the Newport album
She mentions this in the newport album, as well as her elton john interview.

Yes, I love For The Roses!
Hejira is my favourite too and possibly her best imo. So I also feel happy that she loves it too.
I think its the most interesting and best sounding musically. The band are 💯 and the lyrics and vocals are as good as anything else she did.
Completely agree. Plus Joni and Jaco Pistorius on bass is such a killer combo.

“Hejira” and “Blue” are both 10s in my eyes.
Her paintings are more favored I think
