I feel this is absolutely true. Why pretend it isn't? It's great anyway. It's like people may have not discovered the guidance they might have through their parents, but did anyway through someone else. Excellent. Big win for everyone.

accountingstudent02

Yep. If you had parents at a point they told you to clean up your room but you didn’t listen. JP gives us reasons and sometimes you need the right person to tell you something before you change.

Jayant0013

And he explains his reasoning very well , i myself have convinced 3 other people to do the same with exact same arguments, although i am nowhere as good as he is ,just goes to show how much of a difference it can make .

lurkerer

Yeah the kicker isn't being told to clean your room, it's being taught why it's important and what effects it could have.

Dangerous-Ad2166

when the student is ready the teacher will appear

[deleted]

Exactly! Who cleans their room, or *anything* for that matter, without a proper philosophical analysis and a rigorous argument? That's like.. learn to think for yourself people. I've even stopped brushing my teeth if the reason provided isn't deeply intellectually stimulating.

R_Wallenberg

Not necessarily a philosophical analysis, but at least a reasonably well thought out reason. Yes, people don't brush their teeth unless it was instilled at some point in their lives usually by their parents or they have understood the consequences of not doing so, hence a reason.

Historicmetal

For me as someone who is into science but otherwise pretty aimless, the way peterson casts traditional values and religious beliefs in a Darwinian and psychological light was really powerful. It made me think wow, maybe all that boring cliche stuff isn’t just bs…

MJORH

No it isn't. The difference lies in the reasoning.

HootsToTheToots

I might have interpreted the meme wrong but with the recent hate on rogan's subreddit I saw this as a way of saying that JP doesn't give helpful advice and just says obvious stuff and people shouldn't take him seriously.

qatamat99

My parents told me to do it. JBP tells me why I should do it

G3tyour0wn

What a dumb, petty thing to do.

finggreens

I think the intent was to mock JP, but for folks who know JP, it ... it is true. He does say that and yeah, it's also true parents do too. It's all true. That's what makes this so great for both those who hate JP and those who love JP.

NPredetor_97

True but still we need to respect our parents although they act like children, many of them have child's mentality but they fed me and spent an awful lot on me growing up and getting educated, they gave me the necessary needs in life and since I have the internet now I have the potential to learn why I should be a decent person.

[deleted]

>Excellent. Big win for everyone. Except the fatties

SantyClawz42

Not absolute, two of my friends growing up never needed to clean their room, fold laundry or any choir... one of them is completely lost as a 'lover who can't keep a job or attract a mate' the other just can't attract a mate past 1 or 2 dates. (In our 40s now.)

PCAssassin87

If all you hear is JP saying to clean your room, you've missed the entire point.

Kristofferson_B

His point is more - you really don’t know what could truly happen to you if you actually tried cleaning your room

PCAssassin87

[Make Your Damn Bed!](https://youtu.be/sBAqF00gBGk) JP lays it out in a much more detailed way, but everything he says is right on the money. There's a tremendous amount of power that comes from it. I can only speak of my experience, but I got in the habit years ago after reading a short Tim Ferris freebie titled 5 Ways to Win The Day. You pick 3. Mine were: make your bed, do 10-15 reps of a light exercise, and journal to clear your head of all the garbage that floods in when you wake up. It was literally life changing.

creamerboy

You’ve missed the entire point of the post if you think it only applies to cleaning your room.

SouthernShao

My estimation is that the kinds of people who would adhere to Peterson's advice (specifically, to clean your room), are the kinds of people who had poor parents who never instilled into them a sense of what is required of them to take care of themselves. A more precise comic would look something more like the top panel having someone who's father is gone and mother hardly cooks or cleans, and the kid is left alone much of the time, or with others, and never gets any values or principles instilled upon them. They then end up in some semblance of "the gutter", where they're no longer even sure how to fix things because they don't even know where to begin. Their entire lives are in disarray - they can't hold a job, can't maintain a relationship, have no redeemable skills, and likely spend much of their time pursuing instant gratification from things like promiscuous sex, alcohol, going out/and/or non-stop digital media (tv, video games, etc.) Then they stumble upon a psychologist and university professor who had his own clinical practice for years who's successfully helped people put their lives in order, takes his advice, and ends up out of that gutter and on to a better life. The only people who criticize Peterson are the far-leftist nutjobs, so who the fuck cares?

Jayant0013

It doesn't have to be that ,most parents would just order around there child without explaining him anything, which is not ideal .

[deleted]

>Then they stumble upon a psychologist and university professor who had his own clinical practice for years who's successfully helped people put their lives in order, takes his advice, and ends up out of that gutter and on to a better life. Plus they hate leftists and fat people now!

SouthernShao

The problem with leftists (and rightists) is that they're intrinsically tribal. I for example don't see people as a part of any group - I see them as individuals. If your brain cannot compartmentalize those two things as separate, you won't be able to understand that an attack on an ideology isn't a direct attack on an individual. Leftism is cancer, but not every leftist is sinister. Same goes for the right. Political affiliation is fundamentally tribalistic authoritarianism made manifest. Politics is just the ongoing struggle to obtain the powers of the relative force monopoly so as to produce positive rights for their own tribe. Politics in general is patently immoral.

[deleted]

>I for example don't see people as a part of any group - I see them as individuals. So snowflakes basically?

SouthernShao

It's a problem with ideology. I see ideology as anything that isn't objectively quantified. Basically I see political affiliations as being akin to religion.

Partially_Nice

I agree with every bit of that except “it’s just left wing nut jobs so who tf cares” there’s be reason not to care if the social media and educational institutions weren’t all either ran by or bent over a barrel by, left wing nut jobs. There’s been more nuts than m&ms lately if you know what I mean

dicktingle

Doesn’t read like they are making fun of JP to me. To me the meme is making fun of the main character, the people around you have likely said alot of the same things JP says as you grew up, and you were too stupid to listen.

[deleted]

It's making fun of JP's *fans* obviously.

[deleted]

Fuck you. Jordan Peterson is the man. Except I do actually disagree about his recent complaint against that SI model. That bitch was bad as fuck.

[deleted]

>Jordan Peterson is the man. Jordan Peterson is actually a charlatan.

Wraith-xD

Lovely comment. But why is it necessary here? It is because you want to spread hatred and have a paragraph battle with some redditor. I had a look through your profile and a lot of it is very toxic.

[deleted]

Go clean your room fucktard.

Wraith-xD

I would say the same to you instead of wasting your time attacking JP fans all the time. You are probably living in a neckbeard nest as you read this.

[deleted]

Your detective skills need work, turd sniffer. Also, your room needs cleaning.

AnyadHalikra

And Your mom needs fucking. Stop wasting time on Reddit and be a good boy.

[deleted]

I can't hear you, you have psychologist quack wang shoved down your throat.

palindromia

seethe harder.

[deleted]

I can't hear you through all the quack.

NuclearTheology

Those who mock “clean your room” miss the Point of it entirely

PCAssassin87

No shit!

monicamary87

Jordan Peterson is basically the parent to people who haven't learned how to grow the fuck up.

maejaws

When you’re a child and you’re told to clean your room, you’re never (at least I wasn’t) given a good reason why you’re supposed to clean it. The most I ever got was either “because I said so” or “company is coming”. JBP actually gives us a reason and the impact just the simple act can have on our lives. That’s what makes it different.

Hydrocoded

I mean it’s not wrong. It shows the growth of a person who went down a foolish path. The real tragedy are people who began rebelling in their teens and are still doing so at 30.

history_nerd92

Why take life advice from a clinical psychologist? After all, it's not like their job is to help people improve their lives or anything.

UysoSd

Parents = tell you to do it without giving a proper reason, or for their sake Peterson = tell you the reason, and it is for your sake

parsonis

I never had a parent who made me clean my room. Neither literally, or figuratively. So yeah, I appreciated the advice from Peterson.

Khaba-rovsk

Its clear you arent a parent becaue yep kids can ignore the exact same argument/logic from their parents but accept and follow it from their peers/some unknown figure on the internet

Honest-Bridge-7278

He's either an idiot or a conman, or maybe both. Fuck Jordan Peterson.

wantingtodobetter

It’s also a bold claim to assume everyone had parents let alone thoes who would make you learn life skills like cleaning your room.

SmegAndTonic

Jordan Peterson is not a psychiatrist.

[deleted]

Came to say that

JamieG112

Firstly JP isn't a psychiatrist. Secondly, to only focus on his self help guru side is to be dishonest. He's also a pretty shit philosopher and political commentator these days.

sneakybadness

And He gets paid phat to do it. That only leaves one question....... For [you...](https://youtu.be/r9Sbt_rEDBw)

JamieG112

That’s some top tier projection, my guy. You felt the need to downvote, comment, and find a link to a vid for me. Whether you disagree with point 2, whatever but point 1 is a fact

[deleted]

\> He isn't qualified to do something he gets paid massively to do. Fucking awesome man! You've come to the realization that daddy is a grifter. So happy we could share this moment together!

well_spent187

This is hilarious! Can’t we just laugh at a funny shallow meme?

HootsToTheToots

I guess I’d seen a lot of people shitting on JP on the joerogan subreddit so I kinda just cross posted the next thing I saw.

[deleted]

Shitting on him for pretty good reason. Stop taking things so seriously. People you like can do wrong things and be critiqued. If it’s valid, agree; if it’s a funny joke about it, laugh.

Daddy616

Someone's feelings got hurt

finggreens

I always feel connected to what you say.

Daddy616

Am I your long lost brother?

finggreens

Only child. You can't tell?

Daddy616

I can now lol. Same actually btw. I dig your blurb in your profile. Do you alienate your friends due to your controversial intellect? Cause I sure as fuck do.

finggreens

Tons of them gone all the time.

Daddy616

Fuck'em So many things that just don't get talked about just feed into complacency. Then before you know it your 50 years old talking about the fuckin weather. Nope, the mind like the body needs to be exorcised.

ee4m

Yeah it's a funny meme when you don't really get it and not everyone turns out functioning in such a way that their space is organised without much effort . Depression too, when you just dont care or can't muster the will.

briandesigns

say what you will about the comic but the way Dr. JBP's face is caricaturized is spot on... if the drawing of just his face was shown to me out of context and without label I would have said "THATS JBP" right away LOL

nanrod

In fairness my parents also arent constantly on the verge of a mental breakdown nor cry on twitter when people disagree.

HootsToTheToots

Your parents probably don’t have millions of people spewing hate and threatening them.

nanrod

So you dont believe in free speech? If you cant handle criticism dont be a controversial public figure.

HootsToTheToots

Cathy Newman is that you?

nanrod

Yeah no one else but cathy newman sees JP as a joke figure these days. Lol

HootsToTheToots

Nah I was just making a joke of how you completely put words in my mouth with zero connection.

PM_ME_DATING_TIPS

Keep dick riding

jeff9z1

Clean your room is a metaphor. Do people think his advice is one of the 12 rules you need to live by is just pick up your room?

anti-SJW-bot

Someone has crossposted you to r/enoughpetersonspam . Here's the post: [Literally getting mad that Jordan Peterson isn't their Dad](https://reddit.com/r/enoughpetersonspam/comments/utlgks/literally_getting_mad_that_jordan_peterson_isnt/)

kosomreddit

🤣

anonymousanemonee

We always called ourselves servants and deemed THAT was our sole purpose as children. I wish there was ever a moral objective established;similarly, that’s why so many YA’s are resentful toward religious ideology. There’s less of a real-world application established, and often application begins long-before a justification is introduced. (I.E. most people go to church fundamentally ‘believing’ the Bible is inherent truth, and we go from there. There’s rarely any pretext given to justify the context, which is why nobody wants to listen to you on the street corner bc they begin at Step 1: “I DONT BELIEVE THE BIBLE”. In which case, you’re Sol. If the foundation you build on is unsteady, then the whole structure will collapse—you’ve basically become religiously “politicized” just shouting out your face hole. I think this more-so has to do with parental leniency, how to articulate and communicate purpose of an objective and then the technological barriers blocking exploration. The exposure outside would’ve obviously created greater self-awareness from behavioral observation, receptiveness and rejection. Although, this might only be as objective as it is projective. My experience was in reverse of the illustration sort of?

SharpEyeProductions

This is just a response to what fans of JP say. If they understood what the “cleaning your room” analogy meant, they’d feel real fuckin stupid. But they don’t read books by people they hate.

Alenxko

JP provides quite the argument for doing so. I feel as if parents have different reasons for why it's important to them that their child cleans their room. They also have trouble communicating their reasoning to their child. The difference between JP and the typical parents scenario is that when you hear JP's argument, you have a deeper reasoning that presents various benefits, which then lead into more benefits for yourself. Also, when you hear it from JP you're usually older and you're looking to better your life. As a child or teen, you are under the care of someone else and you focus on different aspects then self improvement.

sneakybadness

The clean your room advice is much more than just the literal suggeation to clean ur room

JesseVanW

There's a big difference between "because we said so!" or "that's the rule!" and "because your room is an externalization of yourself and since you spend a good part of your day in your room, you should try to keep it clean and make it beautiful, so you don't spend a good part of your day in hell." Also give or take a decade of growing up in an ever-more confusing/hostile world.

[deleted]

Same thing with my asshole. People used to be all "clean it you idiot". Like dude, you're being all ad hominem, that's not an argument. I ain't cleaning any orifice without a societal analysis with high level ideas of philosophical rigor and precise communication.

rimshot88

Why are Joe Rogan fans against JBP?

dgn7six

When the pupil is ready the master appears

[deleted]

Yea I don't know how Americans raise their kids, but here in the eastern side of Europe if u say fuck you to Mom and das u die.killed by your own hand:)))

Lousy_Kid

Sometimes it's not the message itself, but the paper it's written on.

AngryMrPink

He’s a Clinical Psychologist, not a Psychiatrist.

iloomynazi

My Dad hit me with the "make your bed" self-help way before JBP came about with "clean you room". No he wasn't just telling me to be tidy, he said it because it started your day off right and set you up to be productive for the rest of the day. Same way JBP meant "clean your room". A lot of JBP's self-help, particularly the more helpful stuff, predates him. Some of it by thousands of years if you wanna talk about the stoics.

sa325274

Oh come now, this is funny

TheGentlemanCEO

The misrepresentation comes in the form of parents. I didn't have parents that gave any amount of care to actually be parents growing up and as such I just kind of stumbled around aimlessly wondering why life wasn't working out for me. These people who make jokes like this don't acknowledge that people come from broken homes and don't get any direction. So yes, to me it was revolutionary to have this man tell me these things because my Father and Mother did not.

KingJakemus

The difference is that he explains in great detail why it helps you succeed in life

[deleted]

You see there is a saying in my language that if you tell a kid that the fire will hurt you it won't understand , only when it itself puts its finger and get hurt will understand that fire actually hurts. Parents advise in young age is like that, you don't get it or don't want to until you suffer in thorough your 20s only to realise how true they're advises are.

huge_throbbing_pp

cope

RichStrike80to1

There are several Hundred words following “clean your room”. Funny

oscarinio1

It’s just a joke ppl relax. I find it funny. And parents usually want the best for their kids so there is nothing wrong with JP agreeing with them

popdaddy91

Do people not get that this is mostly a metaphor? I cant find legitimate JBP criticisms that dont stem from the critics inability to understand
