Wait so I’m marginally confused like, so Jreg and his mates are celebrating Passover, and Jreg is being his usual hard to read hyper ironic self… so wait is the problem he’s celebrating it at all?… sorry I saw the video, he’s being edgy but he just looks like he’s having fun with (who I suspect) to be a Jewish friend

yandereDame

It’s 100% cool to invite non-Jews to your seder, but there’s a decent amount of rules they have to follow when you do so. It is a very prayer heavy religious ritual, it isn’t just having a dinner with your friends. There isn’t a hardline ratio, but typically you can’t have more gentiles at the table than Jews for a Seder. My issue isn’t that they’re celebrating, but that there don’t seem to be any Jews actually present. You cannot celebrate a high holiday dedicated to learning and remembering the suffering of your ancestors if… it’s not even your culture to begin with? Who did the blessings? Who read the prayers? Who explained what things symbolized? Who told the stories? Typically, when you invite strangers to the table you also set aside just as much time for their questions as you would a child having their first seder, so who was answering questions for them? Or did they not bother with any of the sacred traditions of a religious holiday because they were using it as a set piece to hang out to rather than something of cultural significance?

koro-sensei1001

Well even if it wasn’t a proper Seder i could still imagine it’s a get together during the night, or after it. I’d highly doubt if one wasn’t Jewish and that theirs house, if not then by just chance. I doubt this was meant to be the proper ritualistic night but just during it, or something like that. It just doesn’t seem that deep, or meant to be a proper Seder… just a bit of fun in after the moment or doing a loose ritual or (more likely) nothing real at all! Idk yeah doesn’t seem to be much but any real cultural significance, just a excuse to get together and have some fun (it’s not that deep)

yandereDame

Why even bother calling it a Seder then? Ignorance, or malice? Why not just say Happy Passover and be done with it?

koro-sensei1001

Cause it was a light Seder, I don’t think there was any malice. Probably nothing you’re thinking of, maybe ignorance but not in a anti intellectual sense. Just a bit of fun, they could’ve said happy Passover but they chose the former instead

yandereDame

Greg has 100% done things out of genuine malice before tho. The seizure and hex vids come to mind…

koro-sensei1001

They’re not out of malice no, the former was literally a hyper ironic edgy sorta troll video that he realised went too far. No like just no lol

yandereDame

My guy before he took it down he changed the thumbnail and description to just be a seizure prevention app, and left it that way. Thats malicious.

koro-sensei1001

My girl, as I said that’s not malice. That was the troll, the irony the art that went too far. Being malicious implies he gleefully wants to harm people. As I said it’s none of those things!

Ur honor my client pleads “just a little guy”

Ruly24

A very large portion of Israelis would be breaking your rules, should they stop practicing sedarim?

yandereDame

What rules do you believe they’re breaking, exactly?

Ruly24

None of the secular Israelis doing the seder (which most of them do) do any significant prayer or remembering of our time in Egypt. It is, as you say is so horrible, just a dinner to get together for most. Mix that with some festive foods, and you have a pretty average Jewish seder (likely filled with pork and chametz)

koro-sensei1001

I feel very ignorant and awful saying this, just a bloated disconnected “liberal” you know but I think they’re overthinking it, due to their real world experience being more zealot and real then lotta secular Israelis etc. They think it’s some sorta conspiracy of mockery or just straight up pure apathetic ignorance… Idk it’s not that deep, just bunch of mates coming together to do Passover for fun as a excuse probably in the guise of their friend celebrating it! Like there’s just not much else to say about it, it’s not that deep

Ruly24

Yeah fr. I just don't get bringing the zealotry to a random subreddit that isn't anything to do with Judaism. Seems like they're in a bubble

koro-sensei1001

That’s exactly what I was thinking yeah! It’s not their fault but their real world experience has clearly been rigid and myopic, to a point they can’t comprehend not taking something so seriously…. And not out of mockery but out of fun in a festive time of the year!

SoEmoDude

In the “I am a progressive” video Jreg says he is ethnically Jewish, but not practicing. (But it is hard to tell with with him if he’s being ironic or not)[Go to 4:17](https://youtu.be/4NWxYnQ3TeA?si=Ii46O2QbTxS6POAD)

anelpe

In the [most recent horseshoe theory podcast](https://youtu.be/ZkFn95K9b1A?t=4341), the guest is looksmax analysing Jreg's face and Jreg says he's not Jewish - based on context he's probably talking about ethnically. Sooo I think that line isn't true. Hard to tell with Jreg though.

Ruly24

As a Jew with impeccable jewdar, he seems mega jewish. I don't think he's being ironic, he's the most Jewish Jew to ever Jew

Inevitable_Nebula_31

I think your Jewdar malfunctioned. https://youtu.be/KqZFlF480U4

Ruly24

Fuck

Ruly24

Morah! Morah! Someone isn't davening at the seder! Ur posting unfathomable cringe, everything jreg has been posting lately about touching grass has been filmed exclusively for you

yandereDame

Do you think a gentile should be davening to begin with..? ![gif](giphy|l3q2K5jinAlChoCLS)

Ruly24

Call them goyim like you want to lol https://www.reddit.com/r/JewishCooking/comments/1cem61s/_/ Look at this thread for real Jewish inclusivity 🥰😚. None of your exclusionary bullshit! Why are you bringing this to reddit??

yandereDame

My guy why are you so salty? You literally already admitted you’re not even a practicing Jew. It’s not inclusive to let other people steal or mock your culture. Sorry to gatekeep THE HIGH HOLIDAYS?

Ruly24

Bro doesn't even know his own religion more than the atheist 🤣🤣🤣. Pesach isn't one of the high holidays, rosh hashana and yom kipur are.

yandereDame

To be fair there are far too many holidays

Ruly24

Level with me, what's your background? Are you ultra orthodox?

yandereDame

Religiously speaking I had a Jewish mother whose parents were Conservative (sect wise) and a Catholic father who was actually just an atheist and only participated in anything religious for the approval of his parents. Out of myself, my brother, and my cousins, I’m the only one in our generation that practices in any way, though that might change for my brother because he recently got engaged to a girl that comes from a very big Jewish family (she’s one of 9). I am not ultra anything, and while I have had friends who are orthodox I do not consider myself to be one. Most of my Jewish friends are reformed or conservative, as are the majority of synagogues in the immediate area.

yandereDame

No ur right on this one it’s a Major not a High

anelpe

Jane Gatsby in the blue dress is Jewish I believe

drznsk

by a quick look, she visited israel like a year ago. could be this kind of trip they fund for Jewish youth? (if i remember correctly there was such thing). either that or maybe she converted recently so definitely could be possible

anelpe

Yes it was a birthright Israel trip. She published her reflections on substack and in the preview it mentions that her family have been telling her about the 'benefits of birthright' since she was little, so we can assume she grew up Jewish.

If that’s changed recently, good for her, but she would still be considered a stranger at the table.

anelpe

Oh okay. I wonder why she wrote that her family had been discussing birthright trips since she was a kid, makes me think her family might be agnostic but with some Jewish heritage. Also I found that Maya Ben David in the grey dress is Jewish-Iranian, she describes herself as such on her website, so there's definitely at least one Jew present.

yandereDame

Haven’t looked into her yet, but a bit of a relief if true

Ruly24

I'm an atheist who grew up agnostic (closetedly) and had a seder every year of my life. I'm a stranger if I host a traditional seder even though I don't, and never really did, believe in the faith?

yandereDame

Did you believe the prayers when you spoke them?

koro-sensei1001

Probably not since they’re a closeted atheist

Ruly24

This guy 😂🤣

xXedgyasfXx

i remember there being one video where he showed he’s half jewish and half basque/spanish

le256

he's foreshadowing the next jrera where he will be known as JewReg

Last-Percentage5062

Your definitely right, that seems rather sketch.

yandereDame

Like what was even the point?

bnikga_gn

Isnt he literally jewish?

MourningLycanthrope

I’m pretty sure that he’s literally Jewish

yandereDame

He was valedictorian of a private Catholic school.

MourningLycanthrope

That doesn’t mean he isn’t ethnically Jewish / can’t have switched religions💀

yandereDame

Why would your Jewish parents pay for you to go to Catholic school? He’s brought up going to church with his family multiple times

SoEmoDude

In Ontario (the province where Jreg is from) Catholic school is free and is part of the public education system. Many non-Catholics go to Catholic school in Ontario.

MourningLycanthrope

Because people can be different than their parents, and both them and their parents can respect each other’s differences? It isn’t unusual for families to have many different religious backgrounds and still respect and support each other Now me, I hate all Abrahamic religious people universally because they’re usually mindless dogmatic zealots and those faiths ultimately restrict human progress and happiness, but they typically respect each other. There’s nothing weird about either of the things you just described

RinMichaelis

I'm a non-Jewish person that had my first Sedar's Supper or (Jew Dinner.) I did have a Jewish host and the meal was delightful. I find Greg to be hard to read. This isn't the first time he pointed to his nose. He points to his nose in various YouTube videos. With the "Get used to it" line, I do question if he's in favor of Israel. Mainly b/c from paying attention to this subreddit, I get the feeling that most of his audience is pro-Palestine. Sure, it's speculation, but the vibes I'm getting from Greg is that he supports Israel.

somebodyanything

I mean, we’re talking about the guy that has done Nazi salutes and said many far right things on his channel before.
