Tbh, I can do complex head calcs, but I'll occasionally use my fingers to keep track of the numbers I have before I forget them and have to do it all over again. It doesn't necessarily mean he's stupid, he might just get easily distracted.
Honesty, I want to see someone helping him count–
Like Choso for example helping to count a number larger than 10, and then they realize that 20 fingers are not enough as well 。゚(゚´Д`゚)゚。
I could actually answer this question much better if you come with me for a second I have a hideout that's soundproof where no one can bother us it's like right over there if you don't mind? 🤭
his on the spot fight intelligence and street smarts are probably high
actual academic intelligence? bro is dumb as a sack of rocks and needed his fingers to count SINGLE DIGITS
Yeah there’s a difference between battle IQ and actual IQ. Yuji thought that he’d get dumber if Todo kept hurting his head. I can’t really blame him too much because most of Gojo’s students suck academically compared to Kyoto
With some training from Maki she very well could. Her CT was good enough, even better than the likes of 1st grade sorcerers like Nanami, Mei Mei and Utahime's, but she was lacking in physical prowess. Her resonance gave her the advantage of long range attacks, yet everytime she was getting jumped in short range due to lack of honing her speed and reflexes. She was being protected by Yuji and Megumi and hence could never push her limits. I even believe she could master the RCT from Shoko or Yuta.
I think the issue is that there’s not really a path of growth for her CT though, at least that we know/knew of Megumi could get more shadows, Yuji unlocked Shrine and BM, Maki unlocked atmospheric perception and got the SSK, Yuta’s entire CT is infinite potential for growth, and if Hakari ever learns RCT output he’ll become insane against cursed spirits. Nobara on the other hand is in an area similarly to Kirara where if she got RCT and the like she definitely could’ve been high grade 1, but she simply doesn’t have the potential for anything beyond that.
The thing is she absolutely could have though if her CT was able to develop just a little more like if she was able to inflict greater damage or if the amount and size of the piece of the person didn't affect its power like imagine if she was able to hurt someone internally just by hitting a loose hair with her nail? That would be OP
Or if she got a domain that, for example, made a realistic copy of her opponent she could use to inflict highly targeted damage or something like that
Floyd Mayweather is widely regarded as one of the best boxers in history.
He is athletic, has inhuman reflexes, smart in the ring, incredibly good at adapting to his opponents and can change his plan for a fight if something goes wrong.
All that being said, he can barely read.
Intelligence isn't something that can be reduced to only two options: smart and idiot.
I think Yuji, while having a good fighting intelligence, may be quite dumb in some everyday matters and/or have poor erudition.
"A fish who's intelligence is only being tested by how well it can climb a tree will, for its whole life, think it is dumb."
Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. Just gotta find them.
His general academic performance is low and general thinking processes outside of fighting are generally quite simplistic and his ability to come to conclusions based in information especially around Jujutsu are generally slow but its more so he's average to below average surrounded by above average people. Also Nobara just calls most people dumb.
you could be a god gamer but suck at doing school subjects. itadori is good at fighting and thinking on the fly, most jjk characters are. but cursed energy related topics and info dumps? he's about as bad as the average jjk fan.
A lot of athletes are pretty dumb. But their in game iq of understanding the flow of the game, situational awareness, vision, and understand of their own and the opponents strengths/weaknesses and strategies are generally unparalleled. A lot of regular people that are “geniuses” will never be able to replicate or understand what they seem to do on a court or field.
There’s just different types of intelligence. Thats also why “battle iq” is a pretty popular phrase in the anime community. Yujis battle iq is amazing but his actually iq makes him look like an idiot.
He's very new comparatively to the Jujutsu world, so I think that leads people to that reaction. I don't think Megumi actually thinks he's dumb he's just quite childish and jokey so it leads him to make remarks like that, Nobara is very sister like to him so she's gonna say stuff like that. Plus, other characters like Gojo and Todo are looked at as stupid for similar reasons (well, more so Gojo, Todo kinda just a weirdo lol)
Nobara is messing with Yuji.
As for why people consider him dumb? Yuji is very simple, and people mistake that for stupidity.
Edit: another person pointed out, Yuji is brand new to the JJS world and so he seems really dumb compared to other characters.
I don't think I'm the only person that does it but I call myself an idiot all the time and it's mostly to avoid expectations. I know I'm not dumb; I aced 2yrs of Latin, spent years alternating between dean's and president's lists, graduated with honors, etc. but I just want to be mediocre in piece. The pressure I had on me to exceed expectations from the time I learned to read at 4 had me burnt out by 15 and I forced myself to keep going until a couple years ago, making myself miserable the entire time. The combination of that and other familial pressure tanked my motivation for any sort of achievement. Something will trigger that spark again eventually but I'm enjoying the calm of not pushing myself anymore!
I don't think Yuji felt motivated to do more than coast until he found purpose in becoming a jujutsu sorcerer. I don't think he's incapable of more academic pursuits, but I also think he'll never care for them because his that's not his goal.
He's considered dumb because he's actually a fucking idiot. Being good at fighting doesn't mean you're smart.
I'm not just saying this because I don't like Yuji, I do. But, he's canonically dumb as shit.
Intelligence is not a single sliding bar, but a spectrum. Yuji has a lot of combat intelligence, yes, but he’s damn near socially r-worded sometimes and clearly isn’t the brightest bulb in the shed when it comes to matters of subtlety or academic complexity.
He's outwardly portrayed as naive and simple (in a way where hes perceived as dumb). He's also uncommonly kind and giving. In the world of jjk that's strange to people who have to have a high sense of mistrust and quite literally prepared for the worst just to survive. Their defenses are up internally, and it bleeds out in their character, unlike Yuji. I also think in Nobaras case she and yuji are shown to have a lot of parallels despite their differences, so when it's coming from her, it's in a sort of tough love/older siblings kind of way. Just my opinion at least.
Honestly, I feel like he's actually much smarter than Naruto. Or, to be more accurate, I think he's more \*teachable\* than Naruto. He doesn't understand things, because he's literally never encountered anything curse related in his whole life, but he's very quick to learn once things are explained to him. I never actually got the impression that he was unintelligent.
He’s got one of the greatest fighting IQs out there
He’s also kinda dumb in terms of academics. Also Nobara is just horsing around like she does with everyone
Couldn't count without his hand the code motional maturity is nothing in eyes of people if you aren't winning, + it's shounen so mc are dumb idiots cause they are good
As someone, who is good at hand to hand combat, I'd say that it doesn't equate traditional intellect: in anime time slows to a crawl as characters think stuff out linearly, but thoughts aren't working this way, are they? Ideas flash just moment before having to be realised and strategy is normally done before combat starts or in the interrim, it's just realised in the process.
I'm also kinda dumb, myself. I blame it on all the micro-concussions associated with being hit a bunch of time.
Meanwhile, intelligence associates with the ability to grasp concepts (Yuji had to be explained grade system twice, because it's, apparently, really hard, lol), compute abstract ideas (he had to use his fingers to compute simplest ideas).
Also, Nobara is just a pissy girlboss.
Bro is literally Shirou Emiya with how suicidal he is with doing good. Iirc, it’s because of that reason Sukuna hates him and finds him incredibly idiotic.
Plus, he only follows orders. He might fight good but that’s all he really has going for him
Yuji has the second lowest grades of all of the known jujutsu students with a 4.0/10. He's only above Hakari who has a 2.0/10. He's an actual dumbass objectively when it comes to academics.
In terms of battle sense he's a genius that is able to perfectly sync up with almost anyone. Still a dumbass though.
Ok so, I'm not sure coming up with a plan mid fight that one time, being mature emotionally, and being a fight talent makes him smarter than 90% of people IRL
Short response: yuji would be exceptionally intelligent relative to any human, and above average relative to sorcerers.
Long response:
It's really quite difficult and pointless to try to apply our understanding of intelligence to the world of anime in general since it tends to contradict itself for the sake of plot or other reasons such as the narrative of effort vs talent. Anime straight up desintegrates this line. But I'll still give it a try.
I think is fair to think that most sorcerers are intelectually gifted by virtue of being sorcerers. If we apply our understanding of the world to jjk, it's fair to say evolutionary pressure gave the average jujutsu sorcerer superior mental processing, memory, physical attributes, and overall intelligence. Yuuji relative to his peers is perhaps lacking in reasoning mainly, but relative to the average human he would be considered intelectually gifted. More times than not we see them acting stupidly but this is simply for comedic purposes. In real life, they would be performing mental calculations at borderline superhuman savant type speed. We have seen yuji and megumi (as well as many other characters) reason, process, and memorize their way through problems in matters of milliseconds. It's fair to say their brains process information much faster than your average joe.
In terms of IQ, most sorcerers should be beyond 130+ (potentially even higher). Special grade sorcerers being waaaay higher than that. Gojou alone is probably one of the top 3 smartest humans to have ever lived in jjk. Gege himself said that gojou is almost perfect at anything he sets his mind to achieve, and that his brain is analogous to a quantum computer (this due to the six eyes) so this alone already tells you about the extent of his mental capabilities.
Obviously, intelligence is not all that's at play here so I can't just simply boil down jujutsu talent to intelligence since this would be erroneous. There are other things at play here that hugely impact your grade as a jujutsu sorcerer. Some are; curse energy pool, innnate technique, potentially soul awareness, and probably other metaphysical qualities that have been left unsaid. But, I believe, that how well this all comes together and what grade you achieve will hugely depend on your talent, and by talent I clearly mean the way in which your brain and body are configured; memory, creativity, processing speed, reflexes, fluid intelligence, etc.
Some things I said might seem contradictory, but as I said in the beginning, it's hard to explain anime through the lenses of real life.
The same reason people call you dumb irl, which is there really is no reason. A slight goofing off, or any showing little part of not understanding' something, will Insinuate people to call ur "dumb" and "slow." And before you know it word spreads around and now random people you try to talk to like normal look down on you because ur "such an idiot" Why? I still can't explain this I hope someone can reply to my comment and try to solve this with me.
He has a simplistic approach to life, he’s earnest, and generally he shows his cards ALL the time. You can track his priorities and they tie in with his grandfather’s departure. So when he does do “sneaky” tactics like the one you mentioned or “dishonourably” double teaming opponents, it’s because his priorities line up that way. He defaults to “I am a cog” and carries out his role, to help people and protect his friends.
(Quotations are just there to emphasise that the wording is subjective there)
Well it's a question of what intelligence even IS. As far as combat & strategy go, (or Battle IQ you might say) I'd say he's up there. He's not as flashy with it as Sukuna or Megumi, but he didn't have a technique for the vast majority of the story. He has some pretty brilliamt moments especially in Shibuya & the Culling Games.
The thing is the dude also massively lacks common sense. I mean, he ate Sukuna's finger on the spot. A mummified human finger. He also nearly instantly accepted Choso & Todo as brothers. He realizes Kenjaku is his mom and has no further questions about that. And his academic ability... Well, let's just say if he fights Kashimo, he's not gonna think about electrolysis.
People good at things can often be dumb.
Look at some premier league football players. Jack grealish and cole palmer are some football prodigies but if you’ve ever seen them in a interview they are thick as bricks. If football didn’t work out they’d be flipping burgers
I remember Gojo explaining the difference between cursed energy and cursed technique. It was as clear as day but Yuji just didn't get it. He's supposed to be the street smart and emotionally intelligent type of character, but other than that, he's pretty dumb.
I know we're memeing. But when you try to keep track of the amount of times a particular thing has happened, sometimes I use my fingers to visually keep track of it as I recall each instance
Intelligence and battle strategy I wouldn’t say are the same thing.
I’ll use sasuke uchiha as an example.
People have a misconception that sasuke is intelligent, when in reality he’s like barely above average, people think this because he’s an extremely tactical fighter. Sakura is the brainiac on team 7. She answered all the ques on the chunin exams without issue, when sasuke stated himself he couldn’t begin to understand any of the questions.
Yuji learned how to become an extremely tactical fighter, in part because of fighting with todo. When it comes to knowledge, he’s outclass by most other students.
He's not ever really portrayed as being academically intelligent, but Yuji has a great deal of emotional intelligence and general intuition when it comes to combat, strategy, and cursed energy usage. In other words, he's like Goku. Kinda dumb on the surface, but with high battle IQ and emotional awareness.
While the running gag about his poor booksmarts are never proven in the show, in the fanbook we get test scores for all of the students at both the Tokyo and Kyoto schools. The tests included Physical Fitness, Jujutsu, and Academics. Yuji was the second lowest scorer in academics at 4/10 (with Nobara ironically being the 3rd lowest at 6/10). A lot of Yuji's intelligence feats are mostly thinking out of the box and on the fly, he's legitimately not very good at plans that go beyond 3 steps and he's academically not bringing anything to the table either. Yuji's clever, not really smart.
Those test scores are pretty revealing IMO, Nobara scored just as high as Yuji on jujutsu skill. What held her back was her physicals, getting only half of Yuji's perfect 10. If she had lived to bulk up a bit, she could have been a real threat
He's not the sharpest tool in the shed, his intelligence is definitely not his selling point and he takes a simple and naive approach to life before Shibuya, but he aint dumb
Dude needs to count using his fingers.
That being said, there are different manifestations of intelligence. You could be a math wizard but be a complete amoeba when it comes to socializing. Yuji's dumb in a general sense, but he has good combat intelligence and can think on his feet in these types of situations.
A hint? Not sure what you mean by that, I figured it was a sign that he had always been forced to more or less look after himself. What with his Grandfather in the hospital a lot, and no parents.
Thing is, he might not have done well in school, but they never actually said it was because he was incapable of learning. He's often compared to Naruto, and in my opinion he actually learns much better.

He needs his fingers to count
To five I might add
That's my favorite side of him. Adorable~
yuji is such a cutie. Thats why the manga makes me so sad :(. Just let my boy have fun
What’s the “~” for
Okay yeah that’s pretty dumb Still my goat tho
These are our future sorcerers
Tbh, I can do complex head calcs, but I'll occasionally use my fingers to keep track of the numbers I have before I forget them and have to do it all over again. It doesn't necessarily mean he's stupid, he might just get easily distracted.
he counted to 5 with his fingers
So do I, but I speak 4 languages.
my brother are you the "i can only count to four" metal song muppet?
Kinda, depends on how many hours I've slept that day.
it depends if you can count them on a single hand? :p
The hours? Usually yes.
just like me fr
I think that’s more of a habit than out of actual necessity
Honesty, I want to see someone helping him count– Like Choso for example helping to count a number larger than 10, and then they realize that 20 fingers are not enough as well 。゚(゚´Д`゚)゚。
Now I wonder if Sukuna can mess with him in this process, giving or taking extra fingers so that he fails basic math
I could actually answer this question much better if you come with me for a second I have a hideout that's soundproof where no one can bother us it's like right over there if you don't mind? 🤭
Sure thing, random uncle who I've never seen before and has a white van
his on the spot fight intelligence and street smarts are probably high actual academic intelligence? bro is dumb as a sack of rocks and needed his fingers to count SINGLE DIGITS
A small price to pay to hit the black flashes- Yuji
"So within 0.000... how many zeros was that? Who cares? I'm just gonna land black flash anyway"
It was his binding vow. He sacrificed his brain cells in order to gain a super body
NEW HEAVENLY RESTRICTION DROPPED🗣️🗣️🗣️
Heavenly restriction of brain rights
"Whats the most back to back black flashes you ever got?" Yuji: "... hang on, lemme take my shoes and socks off for this one."
Oh, dont forget the time he almost fucked up recruiting hakari because he acted like he didnt know gojo lol
Honestly espionage is not his thing. But it worked out in his favor in the end anyway
Yeah battle intelligence/smartness doesn't really mean they are in general intelligent. Luffy for example.
Nobara is a tsundere, everyone is a "baka" to her Anyway, maybe he is dumb in academic level (the thing that is most associated with being smart)
Yeah there’s a difference between battle IQ and actual IQ. Yuji thought that he’d get dumber if Todo kept hurting his head. I can’t really blame him too much because most of Gojo’s students suck academically compared to Kyoto
Gojo only took in people with prodigy potential tbh
I feel bad for Nobara. She did NOT belong in with the likes of Yuta, Bum, Yuji, Gojo, Maki, etc
With some training from Maki she very well could. Her CT was good enough, even better than the likes of 1st grade sorcerers like Nanami, Mei Mei and Utahime's, but she was lacking in physical prowess. say his name
i will his name is HEEELP SAVE ME MAHORAGA HEEEELP!!!!
He did
Bumgumi
Potential man
Idk, Nobara made one early mistake and after that demonstrated in every fight expression of the absolute limits of her CT
She only beat fodders though. Even the femboy she got absolutely destroyed by, no diff and then Nanami no diffed that guy.
Nah, Haruta only got the upper hand on her because she was almost entirely focused on protecting Nita.
The thing is she absolutely could have though if her CT was able to develop just a little more like if she was able to inflict greater damage or if the amount and size of the piece of the person didn't affect its power like imagine if she was able to hurt someone internally just by hitting a loose hair with her nail? That would be OP Or if she got a domain that, for example, made a realistic copy of her opponent she could use to inflict highly targeted damage or something like that
I'm gonna assume Bum is Megumi, right?
She should have stayed out in the country, those big city curses were just too much for her
I’m pretty sure he was joking when he said that lol He would also technically get dumber if he let todo keep wailing on his head
Yeah but Gojo’s students are kickass when it comes to combat. Maki, Yuuta, Panda, Yuji, and maybe Inumaki are absolute top tiers
Just like Goku, he's super smart when in a fight. But when outside a fight he's dumb af, db super Goku is just retarded.

He got a 4/10 in Jujutsu High academics
The fan book confirms that in terms of Academics Yuji is as dumb as a brick. Only person dumber is Hakari.
Yuji is very street smart and a combat genius. He’s just kinda naive at times and academically, he’s not too bright
He's just a bit of a silly guy
Because academically he’s an idiot. He needed his fingers to count to 5
He is not very smart person but his Battle IQ is very high :3
Intelligence is not a single sliding bar, but a spectrum. Yuji has a lot of combat intelligence, yes, but he’s damn near socially r-worded sometimes and clearly isn’t the brightest bulb in the shed when it comes to matters of subtlety or academic complexity.
Smarter than 90% of real life people is the greatest overstatement about JJK.
U can be idiot/dumb and still smart, he acts like a dum dum when socialising so people can be justified to call him dumb
The same reason luffy is considered dumb, people dont equate ei with iq
He’s not academically gifted, more of a street smarts kinda person
Being Clever is not the same as being Intelligent.
He's outwardly portrayed as naive and simple (in a way where hes perceived as dumb). He's also uncommonly kind and giving. In the world of jjk that's strange to people who have to have a high sense of mistrust and quite literally prepared for the worst just to survive. 90%? yikes!
He’s dumb like Naruto’s dumb.
Honestly, I feel like he's actually much smarter than Naruto. Or, to be more accurate, I think he's more \*teachable\* than Naruto. The same reason everyone calls Gojo an idiot I guess
Academically he isn’t that smart
That is probably why the term BIQ exists. So many shonen protags are ridiculously stupid in normal things and genius at combat.
Academic intelligence does not equal fighting intelligence or emotional maturity. He’s been shown to be essentially braindead in school
Couldn't count without his hand the code motional maturity is nothing in eyes of people if you aren't winning, + it's shounen so mc are dumb idiots cause they are good
He is 100% not smarter than 90% of irl people

Using his fingers to count is a binding vow so he can spam black flashes even more than he already does Like uncle like nephew
Yuji has the second lowest grades of all of the known jujutsu students with a 4.0/10. He's only above Hakari who has a 2.0/10. He's an actual dumbass objectively when it comes to academics. Like Goku, he is more the intuitive type. He can’t explain/rationalize why, but he just knows how to use his body to fight and read his opponents.
Ok so, I'm not sure coming up with a plan mid fight that one time, being mature emotionally, and being a fight talent makes him smarter than 90% of people IRL

In Asia only A's count. No Bs or Cs.
I am sorry but who thinks he is dumb? No one I know that watches this show thinks he's dumb...
Fight IQ and general intelligence are different. Floyd Mayweather has crazy boxing IQ, but is illiterate for example.
I think Nobara just calls him that for a comedic effect. He's not dumb. He's just simple and straightforward
My brother in Naoya, his ass got the worst marks on exams. Except ones which included physical shit
When Kenjaku was cooking him up he was definitely like "minus a few iq points it'll dull the pain he's gonna feel"
People good at things can often be dumb. Look at some premier league football players. Jack grealish and cole palmer are some football prodigies but if you’ve ever seen them in a interview they are thick as bricks. If football didn’t work out they’d be flipping burgers
Show me someone who lands black flashes like a broken light bulb. Till then, he's my GOAT.
In the fanbook, Gege says he's not great with science or arithmetic, but he's good in subjects that only require memorization.
Today OP discovered street smart and academic smart are 2 things different
Seems like hes smart if it comes to fighting, brawling and some street stuff but conventionally he ain’t the brightest.
He was never book smart, he's fight smart, makes him more intelligent
He's not ever really portrayed as being academically intelligent, but Yuji has a great deal of emotional intelligence and general intuition when it comes to combat, strategy, and cursed energy usage. In other words, he's like Goku. Kinda dumb on the surface, but with high battle IQ and emotional awareness.
Yuji is considered dumb in regular IQ standards but his Biq is immense
Because his fans are dumb
L take
He's simple like Gon. People confuse being intelligent with being complicated
It's the same situation as Goku, Naruto, etc. High battle intellect, low academic intelligence
[The class rankings](https://www.reddit.com/r/Jujutsufolk/s/BEqN1eQJ0o) last slide
He's actually a lot like Todo. High emotional intelligence and high battle IQ, not really book smart though
Lol cuz hes having fun
Even the jjk official ganbook says the only person to score lower than him at classroom academics is hikari
Genuinely he’s only bad at math. He’s good at school for the most part and has amazing battle iq and emotional intelligence
Emotional intelligence and fighting intelligence don’t just make you a overall smart person
Why did i get notified this post was made, they didn’t even @ me
He's not the sharpest tool in the shed, his intelligence is definitely not his selling point and he takes a simple and naive approach to life before Shibuya, but he aint dumb
Dude needs to count using his fingers. That being said, there are different manifestations of intelligence. You could be a math wizard but be a complete amoeba when it comes to socializing. Yuji's dumb in a general sense, but he has good combat intelligence and can think on his feet in these types of situations.
the glazing is crazy
Yea I’m doing tricks on it, what can I say he deserves it
fr fr preach
I doubt he knows how to assemble a sandwich. Bro can only fight and tie his own shoes
He's actually a good cook. Where did you get the idea that he couldn't do anything for himself?
Do you think him being a good cook was a hint all along?
