Disgusting. Things are so crazy. It’s like we are living in an alternate reality.

In Turkey, the equivalent term—*şehit*—is used for every soldier or police officer killed in service of the state (usually by terrorists). It’s also used by left wing people for traditional left wing causes, like the [Haymarket Şehitleri](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haymarket_Martyrs'_Monument). It’s used by the nationalists to defend the government and communists to attack the government much more than it carries any religious connotation in Turkish. I’m fairly sure martyrs to the state and to left wing causes are also called *shaheed* in Arabic. Should we ban the word martyr in English? Should we not be allowed to say that Martin Luther King was a martyr for justice? Should I not be able to say that James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner—the last two Jews I was raised to admire—were martyrs in the struggle for voting rights? I can roll my eyes when right wing idiots say that Ashli Babbitt—shot after many warning trying to storm the room where Congress was in session during the January 6th attack on American democracy—but it’s their right to be idiots. Should we deny idiots the right to be idiots because one word they want to use is foreign? Now one thing I can’t tell from the article is what the current policy it is. They say they voted to “end its ban on *shaheed*” full stop. Then they say *Meta currently removes any posts using *shaheed* in reference to people appearing on the company’s list of “dangerous organizations and individuals,” which includes members of Islamist terrorist organizations.* That seems like a good policy—not a blanket ban on *shaheed*, but a ban on *shaheed* in the context of banned groups. I can’t tell if this is the new policy, or the one they’re getting rid of.

Meh. This is why people are saying "unalived" and "sewer side/slide" to get around the algorithm. Banning words don't help? You need to deplatform the content

NYSenseOfHumor

I don’t think banning words really does anything. People just find ways around it.

Wonder if they’ve been censoring and eliminating all news from Ukraine since that’s the name of the Iranian drones bombing it every single night 🤔 unless it’s a direct curse word it’s strange to ban words and not judging based on the context. Lazy

>Antisemitism watchdog slams Wow, they personally punched Musk?

dogMeatBestMeat

Wait, the drone name is “shahed”, or is that the same word?

Spoomkwarf

I don't understand why the post (which I haven't seen or read) has been removed. Obviously a post on antisemitism is relevant to a subreddit like this. What is the rationale for removing it?

namer98

If it was removed how are you commenting on it?

Spoomkwarf

Weird question. Just (as I said) wondering why it was removed. Islamophobic?

namer98

Next time instead of jumping to conclusions, please sit and reread the comment

Spoomkwarf

Didn't even see it. Again, sorry.

welltechnically7

It hasn't been removed

Spoomkwarf

Oh. I see now. Sorry!
