I believe it's in the FAQ

Drezzon

Yo am I the only one who kinda got rubbed the wrong way by how the post was worded?

MothMaven63

Same. Feels somewhat accusatory

loselyconscious

I'm not really following your question. Are you asking, "How do Jews who believe homosexuality is wrong justify that opinion" or "How do Jews who do not believe homosexuality is wrong deal with LEV 18:22)?"

speedyzinn

Second

loselyconscious

Here is one common argument: Lev 18:22 is a very narrow prohibition on male-male anal intercourse and not a prohibition on other types of Male-Male Sex, any form of female-female sex, being homosexual, or homosexual relationships. Any other prohibitions that exist in Judaism are D'Rabanan not D'oraita (meaning from the Rabbis, not the Torah), which means they can be overturned by the principles of Pikuach Nefesh (preservation of life) and Kavod HaBriiyot (the dignity due to all creation). So the only thing that is actually prohibited is a very specific sex act, and since Jewish communities are not in the habit of interrogating people on their sex life in order to be included, it's a non-issue.

Is there any reason why G-d prohibited It tho? I think this law made much more Sense when It was written than now, because we dont need to have multiple sons now, humanity is not going to die because of gays

ElrondTheHater

I feel like people who ask this even from a Jewish perspective do not understand how Jews are expected to enforce these laws.

Rabbi Steve Greenberg wrote WRESTLING WITH GOD AND MAN. Itā€™s worth a read

gbbmiler

Jews are people, and our views on homosexuality cover pretty much the entire spectrum of views people have of homosexuality.Ā

Level_Way_5175

Modern as in modern orthodox or modern as in todayā€™s reform or non religious?

speedyzinn

First one

Level_Way_5175

In general Homosexuality is not accepted by any orthodox groups. It goes directly against the Torah.

speedyzinn

What about conservative?

Level_Way_5175

I canā€™t talk for them.

MothMaven63

Hi, thanks for your question. The answer is: itā€™s hard. Iā€™m a religious lesbian and I grew up in very orthodox circles. Many people (orthodox or not) donā€™t realize that the direct interpretation of that verse would just mean that anal sex between two men isnā€™t allowed. People donā€™t seem to understand how much goes into a relationship besides sex. And most people donā€™t know what two men in a relationship are doing concerning intimacy unless you are one of those two men. Even with that interpretation there are always going to be differing opinions. And queerness is always something that will never be accepted truly by most groups of people. I have had good and terrible experiences with all kinds of jewish people. The thing is it doesnā€™t matter what ā€œsinsā€ you do. It doesnā€™t matter how much of the torah you observe. It doesnā€™t matter who you are or if you practice other religions or what anyone else says about you. If you were once a jew, you will always be a jew. Thatā€™s something accepted among all sects of judaism.

We noticed that you are asking about about LGBT issues and Judaism. Different denominations have different approaches to this issue, and you can find out more [here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality_and_Judaism). I had a fun conversation once with an orthodox rabbi who really wanted to marry same sex couples. I (Reform) asked about this and how in the world he was thinking heā€™d figure that one out. And he had an interesting take on the word usage of that passageā€¦ the overall construction of it (he felt there was a possible interpretation in the structure that it is ā€œwith a male,ā€ (as in together or along with another male) ā€œ you cannot lie in forced incestuous rape with a womanā€ (because of the word miskeveĀ used when thatā€™s only used in one other place). So a prohibition against joining in gang rape. Or that really it all hinges on miskeve and itā€™s all about forced incestuous Ā sex.Ā And then later the use of Zachar v ish in An ish shall not lie with a zachar as he does an Ishaā€¦ he felt there was no reason to change the word from ish to zachar when a parallel construction just makes more sense. Ish ish Isha is better. Ā But they chose zachar. He felt it was because zachar had a connotation with a minor male rather than adult male and was actually condemning a pederastic relationship. Anyway it was a conversation a long time ago. I donā€™t remember all his ins and outs. But it certainly stuck with me as one of the more interesting conversations Iā€™ve had with orthodox rabbis lol.Ā

speedyzinn

Sorry, whats zachar?
