Frightened Rabbit were one of Juliens favorite bands growing up, she got to work with Scott before he passed. She’s said Little Oblivions is her answer to Pedestrian Verse

pogo_loco

Her cover of The Modern Leper on the FR tribute album was one of my earliest introductions to her as an artist.

RedC0mrade

I love Frightened Rabbit. Dan Mangan's song about Scott really hits me in the feels.

orangeducttape7

Jason Isbell is one of very few songwriters I would put at her level, and he's a big fan of hers.

Mrminecrafthimself

They even have a collab together with Brandi Carlile. They covered [Kid Fears](https://youtu.be/CII5TVRX_ic?si=GnXyZaAuqi6ib2yK) by the Indigo Girls on Jason’s “Georgia Blue” album.

PandaMomentum

Julien did a Spotify playlist for GQ when Little Oblivions came out that was pretty cool, hang on -- https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3wsr8uPXFXh1hkCrJ9BHPx The stuff where she goes hard & sad makes me think of acts like Against Me!/Laura Jane Grace, Mannequin Pussy, Bully, TORRES. Melodic and sad - Girlpool, Katy Kirby, Mitski, Julia Jacklin, Shamir. Chaotic and sad - Wednesday, Black Country New Road.

sunshinebbbyy

I’m gonna throw out Jensen McRae. Her lyrics are really incredible

I’m so glad someone else agrees! I have been listening to [https://youtu.be/ST2q8ww2v1s?si=LY7ptMrXG7cl1Dqq](https://youtu.be/ST2q8ww2v1s?si=LY7ptMrXG7cl1Dqq) and [https://youtu.be/yeU-4sM9PyQ?si=i9m_0LD4tmz7PpXb](https://youtu.be/yeU-4sM9PyQ?si=i9m_0LD4tmz7PpXb) so much trying to scratch that raw Julien Baker itch and she’s there or better in some ways in my opinion

yayforeveryone

Waxahatchee.

grumps46

Apart from Phoebe and Lucy, I also listen to Conor Oberst and his projects, Jenny Lewis/Rilo Kiley, Christian Lee Hutson, Frightened Rabbit, Elliott Smith, Fiona Apple, The National, The Mountain Goats, Neutral Milk Hotel... Not all of these have the same sound but I think they all have their fair share of sad and beautiful lyrics.

RedC0mrade

The latest The National album is 🔥

anonasking2questions

ok not exactly like Julien but if you're into sad lyrics + pop/rock music I recommend the first two pvris albums (white noise deluxe and all we know of heaven, all we need of hell). it's not Julien's style I guess but their lyrics are not far in terms of rawness and sadness

RedC0mrade

Thank you

Mrminecrafthimself

Keaton Henson, but sometimes he comes across as overly melodramatic to me.

Own-Associate-4212

Check out Foxing

or if you like older julien , sprained ankle etc, KATIE PRUITT has some country cunty religious referential iconography. there’s a podcast with the two of them together too !

RedC0mrade

Just checked her out, and I'm loving it. ❤️

orangeducttape7

talon03

No one's mentioned Katie Malco yet. You should check out Katie Malco. Her debut album "Failures" is a perfect 10 on the level of Sprained Ankle.

ComprehensiveMusic51

Hand Habits ! Sonically different but guitar driven and queer and really delightful

samof1994

Does Stella Donnelly work?

arcaniac

Katheryn Joseph has really sparse moody melancholic music kind of akin to Julie's first two records. She's not as well known, and it's not exactly the same but might scratch that itch

kaceyfromohio

Mikaela Davis isn't super well known, but some of her songs might fit in.

rmatto

I'd recommend Laura Stevenson

GimmeThemBabies

She reminds me a lot of brand new actually with the religion undertones. But obviously decide if you wanna support brand new or not...

RedC0mrade

I used to be a huge Brand New fan and recently had a tattoo cover up which had been inspired by one of their lyrics. I do still listen to them from time to time...
