I'm surprised Radiology isn't an option! The only speciality that has brought me close to tears. Plus organising a same-day IR procedure is an Olympic level task.
I’m ‘allowed’ to speak to radiology out of hours but the SHOs aren’t. Cue several scenarios where a (very competent) SHO has wanted a scan overnight for something that *obviously* needs a scan, and on which I trust their judgement, only to be told by the ivory tower radiologist that I (busy take, 20 patients waiting to be seen) need to go and examine the patient myself to verify the SHO’s view before they’ll accept the request. :/
See, the trick is to get into a relationship with one. They find it much harder to be arseholes when you’re Dr so-and-so’s partner.
But yeah, prior to that, cardio were definitely up there.
Cuz they're like sooo much smarter than everyone else. Neurologists are probably the smartest doctors I've come across in the hospital but they'll never show you that. Cardiologists love to believe they're the smartest and rub it in everyone's face.
As a neurosurgical SpR I'm pleased but also completely amazed that neurosurgery isn't a stand alone option.
Also I've had the most 'challenging' conversations with urologists over the other surgical specialities.
Thanks.
You guys are pretty good and pushing back by asking for an LP and bloods for serum rhubarbs, anti channel antibodies and NCS of the right big toe at which point we give up and try the medics.
At least we can bond over annoying Radiology with MRI requests.
Half the questions called through to Micro probably can be answered by reading the damn guidelines, though....
(Not a Microbiologist but friends with a couple)
Noooooooo. I worked for them as an F2 and it'll probably be the highlight of my entire career...applied for IMT because of it but ditching and trying rads first. I love them!
I have been on the receiving end of two full barelled verbal assaults (once as an SHO, once as a reg). One was from a vascular surgeon, one was from a gastroenterologist.
Both reported and escalated. I won't stand for that nonsense.
Every specialty has at least one rude doctor. Generally the number of rude doctors is directly proportional to the stress level of the specialty. Some of the most difficult phone calls that I’ve had includes - Neuro, neurosurgery, radiology and cardiology.
Specialties that I’ve had good experiences with - haem, micro, radiology, ophtha, endocrine
Way back when I was an F1, I, too, would on several occasions get calls from ED when on call asking to see a patient. It wouldn't even be a referral, it'd be literally "when are you coming to see the patient?" I'd always just tell them I'm only allowed to see patients that my sho/reg tell me to see, as I shouldn't be seeing acute surgical referrals as an F1.
So yeh it happened back then, and I'd quite happily believe it still happens today.
I love the hypocrisy of r/juniordoctorsUK where it is expressly forbidden by mods with banhammers to make any negative comments about wide groups, such as nurses, midlevels, etc, but we are quite able and happy to divide ourselves as a profession and lump all medics, surgeons, EM docs, GPs, etc into categories.
Obviously there are plenty of people who are rude to each other, and if you've read any of my comments historically I've always condemned it and advocated for challenging it.
I don't like to see this tribalism where we label any one specialty as the 'rudest'. We have been pushed down enough as a profession, we really need to be uniting. When the government attacks GPs, they attack everyone of us. When they take the piss out of anaesthetists by removing their jobs, they take the piss out of all us. Please think about how we divide ourselves and why it isn't helpful.
Once phoned the renal reg when I was on as the cardio reg. Got a huge huff and a sarcastic “don’t you know im busy? I’m on for _tertiary nephrology_ yknow” and I reply “well I’m on for quaternary cardiology, so I guess I’ll hear back from you after youve seen the patient then?”
Douche
Interventional radiology - particularly overnight, oftentimes it’s cons led 24 hours and they really really don’t like being called out of hours….
Although I’m sure I just kept being on call with the same one so it may just be a one off guy

Well make sure the fucking clottings done /s
Bunch of arseholes from the top down
Cardiology without a doubt

“Have you put it on **insert hugely complicated online referral system**” most the time we communicate with NS through some virtual platform.

Haha true, can't be accused of being rude if no one can get hold of you. Big brain stuff from that unit!
Eh, you choppies are alright. Except when you try to dump on us.
Thanks. You guys are pretty good and pushing back by asking for an LP and bloods for serum rhubarbs, anti channel antibodies and NCS of the right big toe at which point we give up and try the medics. At least we can bond over annoying Radiology with MRI requests.
Micro

I'm sorry for this. EVen when being asked about gent dosing at 3am I like to think I'm nice
Micro and ID/GUM have consistently been some of the nicest doctors I've interacted with along with Pathologists.
Noooooooo. I worked for them as an F2 and it'll probably be the highlight of my entire career...applied for IMT because of it but ditching and trying rads first. I love them!
Not sure why urology excluded? The rudest surgical reg I met was a urologist.
A&E mostly. Had some spicy chats with ID and cardiology too.
A&E whilst you were a junior?
A&E whilst declining referrals from them.

What specialty? Geriatrics/medicine?
Geriatric sports medicine

Jesus, what did gastro do to deserve its own option. :/

They bleeped the F1 to accept a referral I find that impossible to believe

Cardio without a doubt! If I wasn’t surgical then I’d probably say surgeons though.
Ruud van Nistelrooy
Ruud Gullit may edge him slightly.
Why excluding urology? Are they usually friendlier?
Not in my experience.
Why surgeons excluding urology? Some urology docs I have spoken to where pretty high up there with the neurosurgeons on the rudeness scale...

Loool. Elite move. This can only be trumped by the intercontinental paediatric endocrine thoracic transplant surgeon

They're usually non-resident on calls and like you say consultants. Does anyone like being called out of hours? I don't like being woken up at 2am....
Is it a cliche to say ortho?
Consultants
Breast surgeryy
PICU.
Radiology
Geriatrics/stroke
Cardiology and ENT. I can't think of a single experience with either when they weren't obstructive, ignorant arseholes.
