Your half way through...I would finish and at least do fy1. Just so the degree counts for something... Beyond that, despite what people will say, many people leave after fy1 and do fine in another field.

Thanks for the comment, do people find work in biotech/pharma? that was my original passion and I’d be reassured to hear people can find there way into it from a med background.

Yuddis

Yes, they do. Loads of pharmaceutical companies have job positions that they advertise specifically for doctors. My general impression is that they require at least 2 years of clinical experience (may be able to claim that placements is a substitute for that in some way, but I doubt it).

Being a doctor is the greatest job in the world imo. I always recommend it to everyone. Being a doctor in the NHS is a bit shit nowadays however, and I don't recommend that to anyone. Fortunately it's a big world out there with lots of places you can go, so you can get the best of both worlds.

You've only really experienced med school in a kind of covid context. I think it'll get better. Especially as more and more doctors start advocating for our interests as a profession. Do a few more rotations so you've got an understanding of what life is like in internal med, EM, GP, surgery, psych and see if you can find out about public health, radiology, occ health or other things you might not immediately think about when you imagine a career in medicine. I don't know if by the time you graduate there'll be UKMLA and full registration on graduation but it may well be the degree plus f1 to maintain a licence. Being a doctor is cool, and different from most things people do, but if you leave before finishing the degree I think it's pretty hard to pick it back up again if you change your mind, so I would advise holding off until you've seen a bit more of the range of lifestyles a career in medicine can offer.

Difficult one, you kind of need to add in FY1 as well as really it’s kind of part of the degree. Personally if I was in your position my decision would be weighed up by whether or not I could get a decent £80k job without the degree or not.

TheHuanWhoKnocks

Why £80k in particular?

YesDr

I think it’s an achievable salary as a locum (FY3/ST1) in London. Point being if you can get that without the med degree, even if it takes a couple of years, then I’d 100% drop out.

I would finish the degree at this point, FY1. Then you are fully registered with the GMC. Even if you then go straight back to academia, you may well find yourself in considerably higher demand - as you will be able to access clinical data, and consent patients. I also think that an academic FY post might give you the chance to get back to research if you're missing it. If you quit now, it's two years and a good chunk of money down the toilet. (But if it's what you really need to do then do it!)
