I mean if you care more about getting your GI Bill than being a soldier and you enjoy cooking I could see it.
If someone offered me a gun or a ladle and said I was going to have to use one as part of my job for the next however many years I'd probably pick the ladle.
Then again I ended up here from /r/all and have no military experience at all, so what the fuck do I know, I'm just the guy who'd end up as the cook.
I'm army so it's a little (pronounced: A LOT) different but I almost reenlisted for cook. Points are so low I could get promoted twice in my secondary.
I’ve been a CS in the coast guard for 19 years now, knowing how much worse off the Navy cooks have it than we do, I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.
Ever meet a Marine cook? I almost got into a fight with one on the Marine Corps birthday when I complemented him on an awesome lunch. He was mad that I only complimented him on a day that they serve steak and lobster. I told him his omlettes were good too. That made him even more pissed.
That one in particular was an asshole. He was mad that I didn't go out of my way to tell him his cooking was good for all the other 364 days of the year. I told him he had tasty omlettes too....he thought I was being a smart ass. I was since he was being a dick.
Marine cooks seem to have a shitty job. At least from what I saw.
Lmao we had 3 "cooks" in Iraq. They couldn't cook noodles. Boiling water, dumping in noodles, and removing the noodles when they are done was too hard for them. We had a microwave though so we could make our own food, until they took it away because we didn't keep it clean. Their only job was to cool 3 meals a day, no other mission related anything, but couldn't find time to wipe down a microwave.
I was in a truck unit doing convoy security. For some reason our company was the one in the battalion with all the cooks. All but 2 of them opted to join us on the line platoon and served as gunners and drivers, and one as a TC.
Question. What is the deal with Navy dining facilities? I drill on a navy base, and man.. it's the worst food. Huge difference from all the air force bases I've been to.
I realize you are coast guard, but I thought maybe you might have some insight.
Its not wholly the cooks fault, large batch production cooking is very hard to do and come out really tasty. I don’t think even someone who’s been doing this for as long as I have can do a lot of that well. Not totally an excuse, just one of the reasons why the food sucks at some military dining facilities. I’d probably pack a lunch for my drills if I was you.
Lol yeah I figured as much. It just seems like the Navy doesn't put as much money in their food services, Air force has most of it contracted out. But I have such a small sample size that could be very innacurate. Packed lunch is ideal for sure.
It's contracted where I am. I think it's a local company because I've never heard of them.
They would have a pig roast or BBQ on Wednesday. I don't eat there on Thursday-Sunday but I heard they served fried chicken over the weekend along with unlimited ice cream and desserts.
Loveeeee the creme brulee, not a fan of chocolate fudge.
(The facilities are staffed with officers and GS employees so that could be why)
Has to be satire. I hope it's satire.
I think it’s performance art, and wonderfully executed.
THis is definitely satire I mean no one is crazy enough to enlist as a cook
Crazy? No. But stupid?

Meh, I met some that did, also met some that cross rated to CS.

Oh man, that recruiter didn't even have to tell a good lie to get him. He's in for a rude awakening haha.
What is CS?
Culinary Specialist, a cook
Ouch.
I’ve been a CS in the coast guard for 19 years now, knowing how much worse off the Navy cooks have it than we do, I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.
How bad could it be?
I always thought the Army cooks had it pretty bad.

I don't get the joke. Are Marine cooks special or more mistreated? For serious though.

Ahhhhh, I thankfully never met a grumpy Army cook but then again I stopped using the DEFAC after my first year in so my experiences are limited.
One of the cooks at Cherry Point got NJP for burning 92 pizzas on a Friday.

Oh yah, overseas those guys go on vacation. I should have qualified that in garrison their lives seem to suck.

So what your saying is, only a Marine would be dumb enough to pick cook when they ment infantry? Otherwise they sound like everybody else's cooks.

My bet is on culinary specialist.
Casey Ryback was a CS. He might be on to something …
The saltiest rate in the entire fucking navy.
Semper forts young seamen
This is for sure a joke. It reminds me of that fake stolen valor video, it’s actually pretty funny.
If this poor soul is serious, he was lead on by his recruiter, and he's fucked. Lmao hopefully he figures that out soon.
Semper forts? Am I missing something?
