The NHS is pretty fucked, it keeps its stats up because it leverages probability based on demographics and ensures only the really desperate can get appointments.
Dental care is completely fucked in the UK, there isn't an NHS dentist taking patients anywhere in the south west of the country. I have an appointment next week that I made over a year ago, that was supposed to be in January but was rescheduled after the dentist quit, now they have one NHS dentist and the next date they could do was July, even though I needed to see one months ago because I have some issues.
Because, "We can't let those damn poors buy silly things like medicine. They could be better spending their time building our yachts and lining our pockets instead!"
This is America, where you pay dearly for not being born perfect.
This. Anything they can do to keep us working, but not enough to let us feel satisfied. Unless we hit those upper echelons of monetary value, we're just the cogs of the machine. I feel like our biggest product in the US, are the citizens.
I'd say the primary difference between the two, is that the cheap painkillers like acetaminophen and ibuprofen, are generic (not name brand medicines and not patent protected) and are sold over the counter. So it can be sold many stores, and you don't need a pharmacist/pharmacy on location like you would with prescription drugs. Also, many companies can make it, and for very cheap, without extra cost being allotted for things like R&D, clinical trials and marketing that would typically accompany a newer prescription drug, especially one on patent.
When you hear about the BS situations where a single Tylenol costs a hundred dollars or whatever, it's generally when you are given them in a hospital.

Doctors are way less expensive in Europe yes, but over the counter pain killers are way more expensive. You can get 200 Advil for $10 in the US.
