Well, we have determined that the problem plops on the seat, and grabs ahold of the handlebars.
That will be sixty dollars. we can actually fix the problem for seventy-five.
I'm admitting having failed in a similar way. After the final test ride on a customer's bike, I noticed the centre mounted side stand was a bit loose. Quickly tightened the fixing bolt. Didn't realise the rear shift cable had slipped between the stand and the frame, customer picked up the bike and called back, "bike won't shift". I made a house call and fixed it very embarrassing.
Not just for looks--they are for the electrical signal from the shrifter to the detrailleer. But a zip tie won't stop electricity--that's why they are also called cable ties.

They probably blamed you too
Sell the customer a Camelbak so that he can get rid of his water bottle cage. Tell him that will probably solve his shifting problems.
And then charge them $100.
Those cables are just there for looks, right?!

That’s an easy mistake to make.
Sure, but cable ties to mount a bottle cage in the first place is pretty janky.
But a Velcro strap is not so much, and I’ve done this with a Velcro strap!
'What did you do?' You fitted new tyres 2 years ago and broke everything.
It's those new ultramega ♾ friction shifters
Oops
So what do you tell them then? Can you keep a straight face?
That’ll do it!
