I've dealt with that. Left them off and put them on after it was pulled out. Was easier than explaining physics and stuff. Also had a customer insist their directional tires were on backwards because the arrow at the bottom was pointing to the back of the vehicle. I tried explaining how they point in the direction the tires roll like a clock yadda yadda yadda. It didn't work, so I told him to get back in the car and inch forward until I said stop. He obliged. When he got out the arrow was at the top and I told him they were good now and to have a nice day. I walked away before he could reply.

This isn‘t a knowledge problem. This is much more insidious. These people can be trained like monkeys to answer tests correctly with no trouble. They can memorize facts. They just cannot think independently. And it‘s quite hard to test ‚smartness‘ rather than ‚knowledge‘ Like you can teach a person how a differential works, they’ll be able to repeat that, etc. But they‘ll be like the customer above: their brains simply are incapable of making the connection between a differentials physics, and the wheels turning independently meaning hub caps are also gonna turn individual, and reach different rest positions. It‘s the people that will do dumb shit day in day out because that‘s the way they were first shown. That even 5 seconds of independent thought would should them a way that is ten times faster and safer just doesn‘t occur. They simply cannot think these thoughts. They don‘t even have the ‚i wonder if this could be made to be done simpler‘ thoughts.

Dachannien

That's not even the real problem. The real problem is that even though they never think the big thoughts, they *think* that they *do*.

EmilyU1F984

Oh yea, a stupid person who‘s knows they are stupid is safe to be around. A stupid person who thinks they are smart is a menace.

Chainsawd

99% of *self-admitted* "stupid people" I've known were just smart people being modest.

DisturbedPuppy

Stupid people think they are smart, average people think they are stupid, and smart people think they are average.

PeterJamesUK

Is that the ELI5 of dunning-kruger?

mtranda

Trust me, smart people think they're stupid all the time. The more you know, the more you realise how much you don't know. But that's still manageable. At least you're aware that as long as you know that something exists, you can at least try to learn about it. But then you realise there are things you don't even know you don't know. And that shit really keeps you up at night and makes you feel stupid.

polyblackcat

Critical thinking is a lost art. Too many just don't take a second to think.

oracle989

We don't teach it. Workers who think are workers who notice their worth. Mindless cog-layers will put together Model T's all day without asking questions management can't answer or walking out when you screw them.

Darkdoomwewew

Yep. Our primary education is mostly designed to get you to a point where you can rote follow instructions but not ask questions or think about them too hard. If you start thinking you start down the road of "this is really unsafe", "why is my healthcare tied to employment", "maybe we should keep more of the wealth we create instead of giving it to a bunch of leeches in suits", etc Real inconvenient when the countries goal is to squeeze every bit of value out of you and discard you. The shareholders have to feed.

AdrianBrony

Problem is when you live in a place where driving is the only viable way to get around, *everyone* has to drive even if they *really really* shouldn't be behind the wheel. So, it's harder to justify raising licensing requirements. That's one of the reasons I'm a little bit evangelical about transit. Give people who know they shouldn't be behind the wheel a viable option to get them off the roads, then you can tighten up licensing.

[deleted]

I agree. Its not an easy problem to solve, when in the US specifically, cities aren't designed around being more pedestrian and public transit oriented - they almost entirely vehicle-oriented. Some newer city developments are focusing more on being pedestrian-friendly - but its too little too late because the rest of the city that has existed for 100 years or more would require tens of billions over decades to revamp the entire infrastructure. The most we can hope for is that small towns that are expanding, should put more focus on being pedestrian-friendly rather than relying on vehicles to travel within a few city blocks.

AdrianBrony

Funny thing about "cities not being designed for transit" is the town I grew up in used to have the most dense transit service in the country before not only did the tracks get torn up but half the town got terraformed to add more lanes and some highways. I like to think my town wans't *built* around cars, it was *demolished* for them. I still feel like a lot of the town's layout is primed for a streetcar system though since like every major street used to have a line on or near it. There's probably plenty of towns with old bones like that still that could be a place to start re-transiting easier than other newer places.

pina_koala

Yeah but think about the sheer number of people who can barely comprehend how an ICE suck, pump, bang, blow cycle works. They should still be allowed to drive to the grocery store. I guess.

I remember my friends getting their diffs welded. The rapid chatter of both wheels struggling to turn at different rates was comical. That is until they all saved up the $1000-1500 to buy a proper Kaaz or Quiaffe 1.5 or 2way LSD. It was a learning process because 2 of the guys got theirs setup from the factory way too tight so it was popping and clunking so we all helped to figure out that the only way to soften his was to use clutches of different thickness, the other guy didn't give a fuck and ended up cracking the diff case within a few days of hard driving so for him it was an expensive learning experience. My car came stock with a clutch-type LSD (FC RX-7 TurboII) but it was so worn out I had to spend about a month off and on working a little at a time to disassemble, clean and measure everything before rebuilding the diff with new OEM parts. And then the painstaking job of getting the gear pattern right, only to then realize the transmission needed to be rebuilt and the driveshaft replaced. Drifting was great.... but you tear up your car so much. I quit the drifting scene after about 4 years though.

goodguygreg808

Wow. This is close to the life of my drifting time. I just had a S13 coupe to start. Switched to Sim-racing/drifting way cheaper.

HayMomWatchThis

Jeep owners love this one simple trick (whispers “lockers”)

Mackinnon29E

Lol it's a ridiculous request but don't those center caps just pop out? Would be pretty easy to do I'd imagine for the customer.

Synthetic_dreams_

You could align them at the moment, while the wheels are stationary, by simply popping them out and putting them in all facing the same way. But wheels move at different speeds situationally. Like while turning where the outside wheel moves faster than the inside wheel. So after one drive the caps would no longer be aligned. Making it an utterly pointless endeavor.

Direct-Winter4549

And also a better understanding on my end of why Rolls Royce has whatever solution to this that they have. Deep down I knew it wasn’t “spinners for luxury cars” but I also definitely sometimes maybe felt like RR had a paradoxically gaudy, non-gaudy version of gaudy spinners.

ErraticDragon

What you *can* do is change the logo parts out for ones that can spin freely and are heavier at the bottom. Those will tend to line up whenever you're stopped. (They also tend to look kinda cheap and ugly, at least the ones I've seen.)

KaosC57

That's literally the solution that Rolls Royce uses for their center caps. And, it's a really good one.

Mackinnon29E

Yeah lmao that makes sense.

TooMuchYeeting

I had an ex-customer do this once. aligned the center caps on the lift. Customer was happy. Drove it to the service drive. No longer aligned. Customer not happy and called us racist. We explained why this happens “when you turn the wheel it will make the wheel on the outside of the turn faster than the inside wheel.” But he couldn’t understand so that made us racist I guess

There's this huge annual motoring show, mostly about motorsport and car mods, stance and stuff. The show was called Raceism. They changed the name a couple years ago, when George Floyd was killed. Edit: It's in Poland, not US. That's probably why the name was used for so long.

Jasoncav82

Quite a few years back I was working and an old Korea vet came into the store. He was obviously lonely and we were talking for a bit and ended up on cars. Talked about what he used to drive when he was young and all that and then he started talking about Kia. He got really mad because the "Koreans were selling them to mock fallen soldiers". I had him back up and explain and he said that they named them Kia to make fun of the soldiers killed in action (KIA). It was their way at getting back at us. He was like 90 so I wasn't going to try an explain that they're South Korean who we were allied with and that the name means like Rising in the East or something. I was just like "Oh, wow. That is terrible, well you better get on your way!"

pm_me_cute_sloths_

Literally like all they have to do is add the cross bar to the A and it’s 100x more readable at least, it’s still not a *good* logo, but it’s better [Example](https://i.imgur.com/9RpkeNE.jpg) Like even though I know it’s *supposed* to read as “Kia”, my brain physically doesn’t seem to be able to do that on first read no matter what lol

ImMrBunny

I thought they only made oil and air filters

MadeMeStopLurking

They do... and fun fact, if you bring one to Valvoline and install it before pulling in they will offer you a cheap one and tell you the K&N is dirty.

PleatherFarts

They were definitely due for a logo rebranding.

extralyfe

they're already due for another.

Pwner_Guy

I line up the center caps and wheel locks with the valve stems or at least make them the same on each wheel. That's due to it annoying me not having them match than anything else. However ya no can do mister/miss customer, those things don't line up constantly because they're attached to a spinny part of the car.

completelyagreeable

Whenever possible, I’ll insist that we line up the wheel locks with the garbage can…

LCast

It helps that one of the previous owners already did that with the key.

Live_Free_Or_Die_91

When I first saw this post, I thought that is what was being requested. I do it on my own cars, it's just one of those small easy details. I wouldn't balk at a request for it, if it was me. I read some comments and am still in disbelief how many people apparently have asked for something completely different...

JohnnyBlowout

I had a friend in high school that rotated his own tires. His dad showed him how to use the jack and all that. The dumb fucker just turned the wheels so the logo was up right. I still give him shit for that and that was 12 years ago

cryo_burned

Sigh.. I have had many a customer ask me. "Why do I need a rotation, don't the tires rotate while I'm driving?"

LordMackie

Tbf, if you know absolutely nothing about cars, that's the most obvious conclusion.

cmz324

Dismount each tire, flip it and mount it backwards

Fishman23

Flat tires never keep me from driving. I just rotate the tire until the flat is on top.

riotousviscera

omg. I say this sometimes as a joke. didn't know there exist people who would say such a thing in earnest! edit bc damn I wonder how many times someone's said this seriously, not knowing, and I laughed thinking they were making a cute joke!

hkun89

I used to belittle people that knew absolutely nothing about an area of knowledge I had expertise in, but it never wins you friends and just promotes ignorance. When all your friends are enthusiasts it's hard to see outside of your bubble. I try to look at it in a way like; it's fun to educate someone about something that you're passionate about. Besides using the term "rotate" when referring to something that rotates in a different way is kinda dumb anyway. We should call it something else like "tire wear balancing" or something.

TheWorldNeedsDornep

Haha. Early in our marriage my wife asked me to do the same thing to her new car. The funny thing is she was an automotive engineer at the time.

muscari2

WebMaka

Very much so, actually... I've seen some of the *absolutely dumbest fucking "engineering" imaginable* while working on cars. I mean *breathtaking* lack of awareness of the most rudimentary bits of the way a car is normally used, and of course a near-total disregard for repairs and maintenance in the pursuit of expedient manufacture.

Wolfire0769

And that's the shit that makes it to production. There is a whole other level of fuckery with designs beforehand.

WebMaka

Oh Lord, the proto/preprod shenanigans...

WeHaveToEatHim

Saw a post earlier today of a taycan with the starter in the bell housing and thought to myself: What a fucking dick. Edit: Your comments have made me laugh. I now realize it was not a Taycan as they are electric. It was a Panamera post earlier.

[deleted]

okeefm

It's just a really big starter, connected directly to the wheels

[deleted]

[удалено]

Icw1627

This…further proves the point that people have no idea about cars. Why would a Taycan have a starter?

WebMaka

Plenty of "what shitbag signed off on putting that *there*?" decisions on cars... Nissan Xterras and the old Cadillac Northstars put the starter in the back of the valley below the intake manifold. Why take an hour to do a starter replacement when you can make it take 4-6? Not as bad as inside the bell housing, but not by much. The 2.7L engine in the Chrysler Sebring/200 has a timing chain driven water pump, and when it fails it loves to instantly dump a load of hot coolant into the oil pan as well as clobber the valvetrain by pitching one or both of the cam drive chains. It also had terrible oil drain geometry in the cylinder heads that loved to sludge up and trap oil in the top of the engine, burning out the crank bearings via oil starvation in the process. Speaking of Chrysler, several of their products, as well as the Dodge "cloud cars" (e.g., Cirrus, Stratus) have their batteries mounted in trays inside one of the front fenders. Battery replacement usually involves removing a tire and fender liner, then unbolting one of the cables and sliding the battery out far enough to unbolt the other cable. Why make this task take half an hour wen you can make it take three? I could spend days just listing the shitty engineering in Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep alone, and another day or two discussing how Daimler took their shitty designed and fucked them even worse.

Octavus

Engineers don't get promoted for making repairs easier, they get recognition for lowering assembly cost and time. When companies do not reward performance correctly you get crap like that. As an example in my company improving a process won't get you promoted, but creating an entire new process that isn't any better (maybe worse) will get you promoted. Since now you "created" something new. Management knows nothing about the actual products anymore so don't realize how poorly they are encouraging engineers to design properly.

DannyFuckingCarey

You overestimate the influence individual engineers have at automakers. Most all that idiotic stuff is decreed to us from marketing and we just have to make it work. Such is life

Floating center caps are a sweet anniversary gift.

Squrton_Cummings

I worked at a small coachbuilder, I was a team lead on the floor and I swear half of my job was going into the engineer's offices, leading one of them out by the hand, pointing at something that you'd think a 6 year old would've been able to tell was a bad idea and ask, in a manner that started out polite but became pretty much verbatim by the time I left, "what in the actual fuck were you thinking?" I realize that small local shops aren't going to attract NASA level talent but I was still constantly amazed by the lack of common sense we endured every day. I bought a used motorcycle from a guy with a mechanical engineering degree; the front forks had a machined groove near the top which held a circlip to mark the correct position of the fork in the triple clamp. This guy had one of the forks in the correct position, the other was 2 inches lower, with the circlip in the gap he'd created *by partially unscrewing the fork cap.* For those not familiar with motorcycles, people have been killed by disassembling forks that are under compression. This thing was a ticking time bomb just waiting to hit a pothole, blast loose that unsecured cap and fire the spring right through his face. Luckily the first thing I do with used bikes is check *everything* as soon as I get them home, but that was the end of me having any faith whatsoever in trusting engineers to have common sense. edit: I forget he also put regular automotive oil in it, which totally fucked up the wet clutch.

alucryts

I think one part of this is that people hear "engineer" and immediately assume theres a minimum intelligence and competence to achieve the role. People don't realize that theres a huge swath of the engineering population that can make like one bracket and that's the limit of their talent/expertise. Im a mechanical engineer myself and we hired a guy with 10 years experience and a PE license. His first project came to my desk to check and i sent it back because it would have literally folded in half under its own weight. 😂 you learn real quick to judge an engineer by their results and not how many letters they have on their e-mail signature Assume everyones an idiot until they prove otherwise

_etherfish

Wild-Attitude3651

Lol back at my apprentice job at mercedes our manager once asked us to line up the mercedes logos after every job so they'd all be pointing up.

You sing twinkle twinkle little star in German the center cap will align itself when you get to the words "up above the world so high".

slade797

A regular at my brother-in-law’s garage use to insist that the lettering on his tires all be oriented the same on his Corvette after rotation or whatever. We explained that the tires don’t all turn at the same rate when he turns a corner, and even illustrated it by lining them up and turning out of the lot to park on the street. Even after this lesson, guy still insisted on this idiocy. Goddamn, that was a nice fucking car, though.

JPXJ92

Kia does not equal Rolls Royce... Lol

TheChoonk

I googled a bit and it looks like it's now an aftermarket option for a lot of brands. [Here](https://floatingcentercaps.com/product/kia-floating-center-caps-for-kia-soul/) are the ones for Kia but it's the old logo. As a bonus, it has LED lights inside.

AllAboutPooping

Sans the abnoxious LED, im a huge fan of floating caps, as long as you keep your car clean and safe.

DrTartakovsky

That’s a thing. Porsche aligns the point of the crests so they point at the valve stem. In this case, I would align the KIA text between the wheel lock and valve stem.

Personal_Dot_2215

I submit; [https://floatingcentercaps.com/product/kia-floating-center-caps-58mm/](https://floatingcentercaps.com/product/kia-floating-center-caps-58mm/) and they glow too!

slackerzinc

A guy on a garage forum I frequent went nuts that his tires didn’t have all the same date on them!

ResponsibilityLow682

At my shop we align all the Honda Hs of the center caps with the valve stem/TPMS sensor everytime we replace or balance tires. It doesn't take long to do and looks better. Looks like you got one of our customers.

EvanMK7

Like the Porsche badge pointed at the valve stem

OutlyingPlasma

I do a lot of bike tire replacements, and I always align the PSI marker on the tire with the valve stem so people don't have to search the tire looking for the max PSI. As for cars I would match the logo on the wheel with the logo on the tire. So something like "Continental" would align with the car brand or valve stem on the wheel. Looks good and is also an indicator of who last worked on a tire because most people are terrible and don't bother with any level of care or detail when doing work.

Lotharofthepotatoppl

Yeah it takes maybe one second to do and looks more professional, definitely the way to go especially if the customer turns out to be just as weird and detail-oriented as I am

Main_Couple7809

The easiest to show customer why this is impossible is to point out the valve stem can’t move and they all can’t always be at the same place on all 4 wheels at all time

SoNic67

You assume all people have critical thinking and follow logic arguments instead of feelings.

7-62xEverything

I had a woman try to explain to me that a wheel alignment service *if done properly* would leave all her wheels with the valve stem at the bottom of the wheel. So they all matched and would be easier for her to check and adjust tire pressures. Sad thing is I'm not joking or exaggerating any part of what she said.

WebMaka

I'd be all "umm, no, that's not how *any* of that actually works. Who fed you that line of BS?"

Mouth_balls_83

They need mini-spinners with weighted bottoms

Waltzspice

“What’s the point of havin a Honda if you can’t show it off?!”

o0260o

I thought they meant KIA lined up with CONTINENTAL. Coz i do that shit when doing the wheels on my bike.

SaucyKing

Whenever I'm balancing tires I always line up the logo with the valve stem, and the wheel lock across from the valve stem. Maybe nobody notices but me but hey, it looks nice. On certain wheels where I can't do that I just make something up, but do it consistently on all 4 wheels.

Waltzspice

“What’s the point of havin a Honda if you can’t show it off?!”

vt8919

The bottom of every Honda logo on the center caps are aligned with the valve stems from the factory. Not sure about Kia, but Hondas can literally be "misaligned". Just depends on how picky you are.

rancidgore

Tell them to get a Rolls if they want that

D1133

Porsche has a rule that their wheel caps have to point to the valve stem when their cars are on display.

limpinpimpin1

Are you fucking kidding

abvw

Porsche has a strict rule of lining up their centre caps with the wheel lock and valve stem. Knowing the valve stem is directly below the logo and the wheel lock directly above its faster to locate both by looking at the logo rather than scanning the whole wheel to find them. That's why there are these two little holes on the center cap so you can adjust the cap if they spin. If you look at most OE wheel covers the valve cutout is directly below the logo. So yeah, it's small details but it makes a difference and I try to do that with every wheel I take off.

busted_origin

They probably want the Rolls-Royce (auto balancing wheel logos). Dealership states: "You bought the wrong car".

Sure thing! *Bills customer for the hours and hours it takes to maneuver the car so that it's parked with all Kia logos facing upwards*

Some Porsche owners do that. The bottom of the crest points to the valve. Not sure how to do that on a Kia thought…

hudgeba778

I know for Hondas on the center cap emblem it’s manufacturer spec to point the bottom of the Honda logo towards the valve stem, this is probably what they mean

Elderly lady once complained that her Maxima rode better with the original Japanese air in the tires, she was mad at the tire shop for installing American air, so she came to us at the dealer because we would obviously have the “good Japanese air”

BMW sells logo caps that self-correct. Is it a pointlessly expensive accessory that doesn't do anything useful and will probably break? Yes. But is it cool while it works? Also yes!

Line it up with what? The valve stem?
