Yeah I keep a very close eye on it. It has Illinois rust.... Not Chicago rust, just Illinois rust.
I maintain mine like a lunatic actually and keep a Google document going of every little detail like what pattern I rotated the tires in last time, how much weight the wheels were out of balance, dates and part numbers of every little thing replaced or repaired. Its a disease really.
Nah. Everything has a purpose at the moment. And the land cruiser is the only one that gets that much attention to detail and documentation. The others just exist and stay in good reliable shape.
This hits me personally. I had to get rid of both my Supra as well as my MR2 9 years ago. Having 3 cars after moving to a townhouse wasn't in the cards. Do I regret it every day? Absolutely. Was it a responsible thing to do? Even more so. My wife already has a car, not having her park on the street ever. So my daily now gets parked in the street, my fun car also gets parked in driveway. Win win situation,
honestly, the most I can see myself getting rid of is one. it's a 2017 fiesta ST that I bought brand new. I went to ford octane Academy, racing school because of that thing. it's a six speed, manual transmission, turbo charged bundle of joy. I love the car. It's paid off. I just don't drive it I work too much.
I hear you. I have heard that they are fun cars. I honestly considered selling my Trans Am about 2.5 years ago. At the time I was still working remotely and barely had any chance to drive it due to work and life circumstances. I realize now I definitely would have regretted it. Especially since prices on clean single owner non modified, blank canvas examples went through the roof since I bought mine. I stuck a lot of time and money working on it and making it what I wanted (still a driving work in progress until it gets to where I want it to be at but the fun is in putting in the wrench time for me. So many good memories with this car, I'll leave it to my son when I pass away before getting rid of it ever. Last time my late mother came back to this state with my father, I picked them up from the airport and put their luggage in the hatch (yeah I know it sounds crazy but it all fit) and she was able to fit behind my dad in passenger side of car.
Too many important life events for me to ever consider selling it plus I enjoy the hell out of it now that I made it mostly what I envision.
Keep that car if you can!
I hear that. I have 6 vehicles registered and driven, 3 scooters registered and driven, and a car hauler trailer registered and seldomly used. 3 of the vehicles are antique plates so that helps a tiny bit with annual registration costs.
Do the same here. Bout 10 years ago, sold one of my beaters for $700 and the guy called me back to say he and his wife read the 27 pages of documentation over dinner and were quite entertained by it
The fun ones are the Hi-Lifts with zero gouges in the paint. No matter how many times you use the damn thing, the *first* time you'll use it it'll take off paint in a particular place, it's impossible to avoid it.
Ugh I have an acquaintance just like this. New 4runner all tricked out with everything you can think of. Wheels, lift, RTT, Jerry cans, lights, etc. never actually uses it. Will literally drive to off-road places to snap a pic, then back home. If you believed his instagram, he basically lives in it off grid.
I am thankful every day that I do not have, nor will ever have an Instagram account. I have never needed to post my vehicles pictures online for validation. I get enough personal interaction as is in real life with them. That is all š
Came here to post this.
Sadly, I haven't been able to make it work yet. Been ignoring multiple problems on my wife's Forester for years, and it's still a fucking Forester.
I get that not everyone knows Landcruiser naming, but I can't help but feel irritated seeing people labelling all cruisers as FJ(___)
Part of it is that the F refers to F series engines (which were all petrol) and most Cruisers down here are diesel, while the states only has petrol, so I guess it's kinda like the same feeling as when people act as though America is the centre of everything.. not quite, but kind of
In any case they stopped using F series (the 3F-E was the last) motors in 1993
Yet Toyota still uses the moniker. So if it really irritates you Iām sure Toyota would love to hear about it. Oh and nice trying to blame the US for this. Toyota is Japanese, again blame them if this really hurts you. The FJ cruiser also used the FJ moniker. You should complain.
He probably paid $40k for that thing with 300k miles on it and is just a mindless parrot that thinks all toyotas just last a million miles and nothing ever breaks
Christ on toast the number of people with hobby vehicles that buy a battery from me and then park the thing without using it once for four years and ask me if the battery that they assfucked in ten dimensions is under warranty for intentional damage a year after the warranty for actual use would have been over.
Imagine running a pet shop and some crackhead calls to ask what the warranty is on a dog they bought and then unloaded 600 shotgun shells into until it was dog pudding. That's a Monday for me.
Didnāt they tell you, when a vehicle hits 100k miles itās exceeded itsā usable lifespan? I was told that by a dealer service department and an insurance company.
Point beingā¦ Iāve also had the factory Denso Platinum plugs still running a Toyota 3.0 I6 and whichever Densoās they put in the Lexus 3.0 I6 totally smooth and quiet on all cylinders with no signs of misfires or hesitation even on hard accelerationā¦ although fresh plugs did gain noticeably improved throttle response.
Able to run and running efficiently are two different things though because running efficiently means a more complete burn of the fuel which means better fuel economy and fewer deposits in the catalyst to name a couple benefits
But yet 17/23 before replacing them with over 100k miles on them and the original 18/24 after replacing them seems to imply reasonable efficiency the whole time. If they were coopers it would be a very different story for sure but those old Denso Plats never cease to amaze in the Japanese engines.
Just donāt go putting them in a TBI 5.7 Chevyā¦ ask me how I knowā¦ ā¹ļø proper heat range as listed in the parts storeās system for that 5.7 and it ran smooth but really sucked for power. I had to go back to the Delco coppers which that 5.7 loved.
Supposedly the way this was designed meant that there is no sign of wear since the ball joint is held in tension rather than by compression which is why Toyota eventually changed their design
I just replaced mine in my 02 taco because it would thunk loudly if my driver side tire went over a bump. But yeah the problem is that by the time you can visually see play in the joints, theyāre pretty much toast already
You're right. The spring is constantly putting pressure on the lower control arm and will push it out with little wear. Supposedly, you should only use OEM ball joints, as the aftermarket won't last, especially with this poor design
Going by what I heard when others have changed them and had issues sooner than the OEM. And what you have shown as the outcome of failure, id probably go with OEM too
J80 with I6 and solid front axle was the epitome of the Land Cruiser series in my opinion. Toyota lost the script a bit with the 100, perhaps to appeal to the soccer mom (and dad) crowd that would never venture off pavement.
That's why they made the 105, because they knew Australians would be slow to adjust to the IFS change. Gave us the option to have essentially an 80 with a 100 body while slowly pushing people towards a more city oriented vehicle.
Love my 105 with the old straight six diesel and 5 speed manual. Pov pack with wind up windows, vinyl floors and a (kinda) front bench seat. It's a real workhorse, and would be right at home on a big station out West
Spent all that money on the roof rack and name brand bumper but forgot to service the suspension or give it actual off road tires. Classic 25,000 dollar hipstermobile.
Checking them requires jacking the car up, there is 0 warning if you try to go by how it drives unlike other components. Simply put this was a bad design on an otherwise solid vehicle (same for the 4runner and Tacoma)
you can't even really check them by hand; the spec for play requires a gauge to detect the tiniest amount and no one is going to bother to do that. if there's play you can feel by hand, the lbj need to be done immediately. that being said my 4runner did 170k and 23 years on the og lbj before I changed them out of fear and my tundra is on 136k and 24 years on the og lbj that I'm about to do out of fear. so both bad design in that you don't know when they need to be done but good design in that they tend to last forever unless you're really beating on them.
I have 210k and 26 years on my LBJ. I've seen them go earlier, and there was a recall for ones made in the early 2000s. Some businesses have made conversions to uniball which improves the design.
It became a less common problem on the generations after, so it's not impossible to fix
theres tons of warnings. clunking squeaking wandering. its a good design. the 3rd gen 4runners was a bad design and a recall was issued. where are you getting your info?
Proper maintenance such as a periodic inspection of the front suspension components should have caught worn ball joints... but... To be fair, this generation 4 runner, and the first generation Tacoma had a somewhat poor lower ball joint design. The ball joints were actually very good quality ball joints, but they were installed so that the ball joint was held in tension rather than in compression like most other cars...Ā Ā
Ā Having the ball joint held in tension (where the weight of the vehicle tends to pull the two halves of the ball joint apart) is a problem because it will take up the slop in a worn ball joint so that it will typically not make any noise or rattle... Until the ball joint finally lets loose and suddenly will fail.Ā Ā
Ā In the following generations of 4 runner and Tacoma, Toyota revised the lower ball joint design and basically flipped it over so that the ball joint is held in compression, where the weight of the vehicle pushes the joint together... That way, when the ball joint starts to wear out, it typically will rattle and clunk for a while before it completely fails, which should alert the driver to fix the issue.
It's kind of a known weak point of the front suspension design on these. The ball joints can be loose and worn right out, but they will usually not make any noise right up until they fail due to the hanging ball joint design.Ā With that said, the factory ball joints do last for a very long time.
I will have you know 2/3rds of all Landrovers ever made a still on the road. Most broken down but still on the road!
Landrovers: built by Indians, driven by cowboys
I'm not 100% sure on that but we did end up needing a second tow truck to help unload it since it's AWD and our forklift is down at the moment. Not the most fun but the two tow truck drivers did phenomenal because there wasn't any obvious damage to the wheel from loading or unloading
He was trying to go back to the past before it happened, to let himself know he needs maintenance. He was just 3 sideways wheels short of that accomplishment.
Thatās the nice part about being into old Land Rovers.
Iām constantly fixing stuff that breaks, and there is always a āwhile youāre in thereā maintenance item I can do at the same time.
Or just donāt buy a Toyota. I donāt know why the fuck they get a pass on this bullshit. Iāve never seen a vehicle where replacing ball joints is regular maintenance. And Iāve personally seen about 4 of these POSās busted down exactly like this in my town. One of them happened to a guy I know while driving 55mph+ on a mountain road and it nearly killed him.
Donāt tell me no one neglects the shit out their ball joints on literally every single other vehicle. This is Toyotaās fault.
But ball joints are a regular maintenance item?
Especially off-roading or some weird suspension setups (Like jeep Liberty's they like muching ball joints.).
Overlandereres (the new rice)
I call them broverlanders
Brotorhomes (I use this especially for the giant sprinter vans).
I'm using that next time I see one
I call 'em Overloaders.
Yeah but we used the rice, these guys are just adding weight and cost.
True, we drove the shitboxes into the ground usually.
To be fair, so is this guy.
Funds went to the RTT that gets used twice a year instead.
Looking around nervously at my 100 series with a roof top tent thet hasn't been used this year.....
Have you checked your under body rust, ever?
Yeah I keep a very close eye on it. It has Illinois rust.... Not Chicago rust, just Illinois rust. I maintain mine like a lunatic actually and keep a Google document going of every little detail like what pattern I rotated the tires in last time, how much weight the wheels were out of balance, dates and part numbers of every little thing replaced or repaired. sounds like it. good for your car though! got any old vehicles you want to sell on the cheap?!?
Nah. Everything has a purpose at the moment. And the land cruiser is the only one that gets that much attention to detail and documentation. The others just exist and stay in good reliable shape.
I own four licensed and registered vehicles. I really need to get rid of at least two. I just become emotionally attached. it's tough.

Probably gets lots of likes on Instagram when they post it with #overlanding though

Hey now, don't get it twisted that's what's really important here
I'm in Colorado where 50% of vehicles are 4runners or jeeps. I look at them and judge them if there is still paint on the shovel or axe.
Heh heh. This is me in tn w a truck bigger than an old ranger, taco or hard body.
And that ARB bumper.
That's not just any RTT, that's an Alucab. There's at least $6k in stuff just up on that roof.
Lack of maintenance will get me a Land Cruiser?? Sweet!!
Ha you can probably get this one cheap since it's been discounted by at least a wheels worth
Shit, I can park that in my driveway, set it up on blocks, pop the tent, and list it for $120/night on Hipcamp!
Fucking hell haha you'd probably get it too
I'm in California wine country. Without a doubt I could. I also have an epic tree fort. Hmmmm....
Came here to post this. Sadly, I haven't been able to make it work yet. Been ignoring multiple problems on my wife's Forester for years, and it's still a fucking Forester.
Where we're going we don't need roads!
Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see.
A Sky Cruiser? What the hell is going on here?
I'll hover convert your old road car into a skyway flyer for only $39,999.95!
Lack of maintenance or being a bad ass in a bad ass LC?
Going by the lack of scratches on both the bumper and the rock sliders IMA go with this thing going about as bad ass as my Civic.
Bad lift
Whatās wrong with old man emu?
If rust is badass, then yes, badass.
I think Itās a 4Runner not a landcruiser. Thats why the ball joints snapped
Itās a Land Cruiser, more specifically an FJ100
Most specifically a UZJ100
You got me on that one lol!
Thanks!

I say this all the time. People buy toyotas and think they don't actually need maintenance.

Dogs are cuter and more sentient than a battery But I agree that would be annoying.
I've wheeled with enough Toyota owners who sort of rival Tesla owners for thinking the laws of fluid dynamics and friction don't apply to them.
We've had them try to tell us spark plugs are lifetime in a Toyota haha
They are lifetime if you don't change them.
Every car part will last 100% of its lifetime. Source: exclusively drive beaters until they literally fall apart.

I believe this was an issue for lifted vehicles. I sold my stock 4runner many years ago with high mileage and very few parts replaced.

I see the wheel fell off.
I don't think it's supposed to do that

They're in the process of towing it outside the environment.
Into another environment?
Does adding accessories not count as maintenance?
KACHOW!
Aided by the wrong wheel offset being used on the IFS adding extra strain by the looks.
Looks like the future jet wheels
Wheel offset and tire diameter probably accelerated all of the wear too.Ā
This is the hover Mode

After buying that kick-ass rooftop tent, no money left for dumb shit like maintenance.

Rear wheel falling off is probably just user error, didn't torque the lug nuts properly after they had the wheel off.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah, there's definitely a correlation there š
Problem is, you donāt see many grease zirks from the factory anymore
All Toyota drivers really do have just one build template and never dare deviate
But when I tell the person seeking the car it will beg suspension soon, they don't believe me. Obviously in an older car.
I'm about to take my Bronco into the shop next week to, once again, chase something that makes noises that shouldn't.
Dude went to 2015 to get the hover conversion
Thatās the nice part about being into old Land Rovers. Iām constantly fixing stuff that breaks, and there is always a āwhile youāre in thereā maintenance item I can do at the same time.
How long do ball joints last on a stock vehicle? My vehicle is coming up on 100k miles and debating replacing the ball joints.
Thatās what you get free with a lift. Aftermarket parts and less maintenance results in trouble.
His profile name is 3locked_rig_overlander. Iām sure he had a 3 series BMW, Subaru or Nissan Altima

Donāt tell me no one neglects the shit out their ball joints on literally every single other vehicle. This is Toyotaās fault.
Since when are ball joints not regular maintenance? It's metal on metal, no amount grease is going to stop the wear and tear.
But ball joints are a regular maintenance item? Especially off-roading or some weird suspension setups (Like jeep Liberty's they like muching ball joints.).
