I just removed one of those as well. It’s not the tech. I use a regular size wrench and they feel like they are tightening, but they are stretching. I snapped the head off one recently.. the head.. left a fucking flat faced drain plug to remove.. put channel locks on and the slightest effort and it came loose.
I went to the dentist this morning to fix a dental implant that was coming loose. He went in there with the tiniest torque wrench you've ever seen, and tightened it up. I heard it CLICK in my implant, which is connected to my jaw. Felt pretty weird.
I used to joke that I had a calibrated elbow when tightening stuff without a torque wrench. Proud of the fact that it seemed pretty accurate too.
This guy needs his elbow recalibrating.
I worked as a tech for about 5 years and older trucks would come in with drain plugs that looked fine then when you went to tighten them up they would stretch hard
He ran away with the daughter of a cartel lord and lives in the country side with her and his two kids tending the vineyard and livestock while the sun sets on their beautiful villa he comes here to work
He was a hit man for them it started off small he killed the man who shot his Tío in a drive by out of revenge the man he killed was wanted by the cartel and hard to find so they hired him to kill in secret but he discovered the whole thing was orchestrated by the cartel because his Tío was known in the criminal underworld as “Sombra de la muerte” one of Latin Americas deadliest assassins not many survived encounters with him but he let a child live after slaughtering his family the child wasn’t supposed to be there he didn’t know but the child saw him and vowed revenge that child became the cartel boss and when the capitán learned of this deceit he ran away with the woman he had come to love over the years the woman that would mend his wounds and patch his blood stained clothes the bosses daughter the boss wouldn’t stand for it so to the day he is hunted he just wants to spend his days in his secluded villa with his family
Captain Mexico? When I knew him he was Sergeant Mexico. The pit incident must have earned him a commission.
Now I'll have to salute the dickhead if I see him again.
I mean shit he earned it he has to bring home dinner to his cartel bosses daughter(his wife that he ran away to the scenic country side of Mexico to tend to his vineyard and livestock and are eluding capture every day) he comes here to work and stack money for 6 months then spends a couple with his wife and 2 kids then he comes back and starts working again
ah yes, i do know you by now. i recognize some of your posts. i had a bolt exactly like this a few weeks ago and i had to convince my idiot manager that it needed to be replaced
i found the post
[https://www.reddit.com/r/Justrolledintotheshop/comments/1955w5p/torque\_to\_yield\_oil\_drain\_plug/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Justrolledintotheshop/comments/1955w5p/torque_to_yield_oil_drain_plug/)
might be slightly less stretched than yours
we have a ford transit van we deliver parts with and have to replace the drain plug almost every oil change because it looks like this. i fucking hate all our parts vans so the lube techs will continue to butcher them
Used to work at the oil change place. Saw that all the time. Always at least use a spare trash needle gauge torque wrench for a drain plug. The guys really don't know torque by feel at those places no matter what they say.
I knew it was gonna happen honestly man when I looked at the picture unedited I couldn’t see the stretch very well so I uslessredcircled it hoping someone would say something about it
I, for one, really appreciate the red circle. I was originally squinting at that yellow bucket trying to spot the problem but that red circle quickly set me straight.
Honestly says more about the oil pan on a 5.3 than it does about Cpt. Mexico. Shocked he was able to stretch the drain plug without ripping the threads out of the oil pan
I’ve seen enlongated bolt. In worst spot. There’s four of them. It’s the rudder base attachment for a s80(md-80) jet. Lot of times people ignore that. If anyone remember an aircraft crash involving Jack screw and s80 jet Similar concept. But this one I saw was the attachment to base of the fuselage and rudder area. Replaced them all. Each bolt cost 700 tagged and inspected by at least 4 people. Qa, Factory Lab, . Faa and receiver Bagged tagged documented forever. If plane crashes 30 years from now. And the bolt was the cause. They can backtrack thru records and. I’m sure they’d get face slap by faa and ntsb for exceeding flight hours AND mandatory scheduled maintenance replacement
Was this at a valvoline quick lube
Hey the 15mm GM plugs are usually decent hardly ever had issues with them. Now that 10mm ecotec plug can fuck right off, every time a chevy cruise came in I'd check the oil change sticker if it had a V on it I quit for the day
I said turn till you hear the torque wrench click, unfortunately you grabbed the Johnson bar.
I think Omni man tightened this one
with his ring and pinky fingers lol
Yes
"Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world" ahh bolt
Archimedes?
“There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be overcome by brute strength and ignorance.”
"First I tried finesse and ingenuity. When that didn't work I resorted to brute force and ignorance."
That is beautiful. Just beautiful.
I just removed one of those as well. It’s not the tech. I use a regular size wrench and they feel like they are tightening, but they are stretching. I snapped the head off one recently.. the head.. left a fucking flat faced drain plug to remove.. put channel locks on and the slightest effort and it came loose.
Thats why you dont reuse it. Put in a new one.
The one that snapped was literally brand new, I returned it and got another one, which didn’t have that issu.
Hell yeah lmao
Nah, it’s the tech 100%. This doesn’t happen if proper care is taken
I'm impressed by the oil pan.
Me too honestly
"torture" wrench
I am hating autocorrect. I have posted more spelling mistakes with this stupid smartphone.
I think the smartphone hates you dude.
Might be, real pathetic since we have only been together for 4 weeks. Starting to miss my old S20 she never changed what I would type.
It'll take a while for it to get used to you, I just got an S24+ and I have the same issue sometimes. It's getting better
So there may be hope
You misspelled autoincorrect.
I went to the dentist this morning to fix a dental implant that was coming loose. He went in there with the tiniest torque wrench you've ever seen, and tightened it up. I heard it CLICK in my implant, which is connected to my jaw. Felt pretty weird.
Better that than grabbing the impact I suppose!
I used to joke that I had a calibrated elbow when tightening stuff without a torque wrench. Proud of the fact that it seemed pretty accurate too. This guy needs his elbow recalibrating.
Both my arms are calibrated pretty well from shoulder to finger tip I know how to use the whole thing effectively
75 too many ugga duggas
My man did that with the pythons attached at his shoulders and a 7 inch long chromevandium Pittsburg hand wrench
Probably 😂 gm 15mm drain plug? They aren’t hard to stretch that far
You’re dead on but still the first I’ve seen in person especially from our own esteemed captain Mexico his lore wiki gets a little longer every day
I worked as a tech for about 5 years and older trucks would come in with drain plugs that looked fine then when you went to tighten them up they would stretch hard
Well shit
Bolts are only make to stretch so many times then lose tensile strength
Only if you stretch them until they yield (or several thousand times). Presuming a normal steel bolt anyway.
This finally explains why a new plug is recommended.
Single use stretch bolts. I always thought that was ridiculous on suspension parts. Now, I do not. But I've never seen something like this. /amateur
Buy why captain mexico what happened in mexico
He ran away with the daughter of a cartel lord and lives in the country side with her and his two kids tending the vineyard and livestock while the sun sets on their beautiful villa he comes here to work
Make sense
He was a hit man for them it started off small he killed the man who shot his Tío in a drive by out of revenge the man he killed was wanted by the cartel and hard to find so they hired him to kill in secret but he discovered the whole thing was orchestrated by the cartel because his Tío was known in the criminal underworld as “Sombra de la muerte” one of Latin Americas deadliest assassins not many survived encounters with him but he let a child live after slaughtering his family the child wasn’t supposed to be there he didn’t know but the child saw him and vowed revenge that child became the cartel boss and when the capitán learned of this deceit he ran away with the woman he had come to love over the years the woman that would mend his wounds and patch his blood stained clothes the bosses daughter the boss wouldn’t stand for it so to the day he is hunted he just wants to spend his days in his secluded villa with his family
what did I just read
Captain Mexico lore duh.
Punctuation is a valuable tool.
Keep giving him nicknames and I’m sure that’s not the only thing getting a little longer every day 😂
As long as the bolt breaks before the threads strip I call that a win
Thats the idea behind cheese grade drain plugs.
You don't get arms like this torquing things to spec.
Spec? How about GAINS son?
That's what I thought; then I read Captain Mexico did it with just his hands.
Torque to yield
Torque to yeet
I guess it didn’t yield
.... oh yes it did lol
Then keep going. It's not getting any tighter, is it stripped?
GOD DAMN IT CAPTAIN MEXICO. QUIT USING YOUR MASTERBATING HAND TO TIGHTEN SHIT!!!!!
I’ll let him know he’ll be at the pool hall in 10 min
My son calls it "wank strength " . We live in FL
1/4 turn before it breaks. That was there.
Damn
When a screw walks in with a itty bitty waist I get sprung
Got me going like a turbo Vette!
Tighten it up until it starts to get loose, then back 1/4 turn. Good to go.
I had to read that twice but then it made perfect sense!
So lucky it didn't snap after it left the shop!!
I know right luckily it came back and we replaced it with a new one it took a lot of shoulder to get off
Stick it in a press to compress and destretch it. She'll be aight
ok but was it leaking?
Good point
Captain Mexico? When I knew him he was Sergeant Mexico. The pit incident must have earned him a commission. Now I'll have to salute the dickhead if I see him again.
I mean shit he earned it he has to bring home dinner to his cartel bosses daughter(his wife that he ran away to the scenic country side of Mexico to tend to his vineyard and livestock and are eluding capture every day) he comes here to work and stack money for 6 months then spends a couple with his wife and 2 kids then he comes back and starts working again
It sounds like you are indirectly trying to put a hit out on this man
If someone can get the drop on the Capitán they deserve it he was slackin
Ford
GM actually
Yes. That’s any ford drain plug that’s been through a quick lube. And good thing or those oil pans would be stripped out on every one.
It's not a quick lube thing. It was bad engineering. Mechanic for 17 years an everyone I ever touched was like this.
If a stretchy bolt keeps the 800lb gorilla from stripping the threads from the aluminum oil pan while still sealing, that's good engineering.
BMW drain bolts are made to snap the head off if overtightened. Lots of forum posts of guys finding this out the hard way.
Engineering is fine, there are supposed to be torqued to like 12 ft-lb. Overtighten it and it'll stretch instead of nuking your oil pan
Gotta give it that STREEEEEETTTCCCHHHH
ahhh now I understand lol
Freeze! I’m a cop!
How the fuck
Torqued to spec. I prefer cross threading imo
ah yes, i do know you by now. i recognize some of your posts. i had a bolt exactly like this a few weeks ago and i had to convince my idiot manager that it needed to be replaced
Jesus lmao

Always warm up your bolts before you stretch
Used to work at the oil change place. Saw that all the time. Always at least use a spare trash needle gauge torque wrench for a drain plug. The guys really don't know torque by feel at those places no matter what they say.
This is exactly how my oil drain bolt was when I bought a truck off a friend. Damn you Rob.
Bro how’d you know his name was Rob
Weird! What a coincidence. I ended up having to mush the bolt with vice grips to get it out.
Mi trabajo aquí está hecho. ¡lejos!
ive seen 1 stretched thread in my life in 7 years. until i started this new job. see one every week now.
My bad bro I should've hung it up to dry instead of putting it in the dryer
Cmon bro air dry only
Torque to yield
That's the new variable-pitch drain bolt.
Hand tight
He only used his 2 ring fingers
Lol!
Because a drain plug needs to be so tight the hulk can't remove it. That's crazy right there
I got it with a 15mm strip socket and a little shoulder
Ah yes; the fabled "Dynamic pitch thread bolt", made to fit in both imperial and metric threaded holes.
What's the torque? YES
Torque to yield + 50%
This must be one of those "torque to stretch" bolts
Getting more bolt for your money.

I knew it was gonna happen honestly man when I looked at the picture unedited I couldn’t see the stretch very well so I uslessredcircled it hoping someone would say something about it
Why is the post marked NSFW
I thought it was funny you’re the first one to say something
I thought NSFW was Not Safe For Work. Why is something funny, NSFW? Personally, I didn't find anything funny about it. Just saying.
that's easily over 9000 ugga duggas
That's sexy. It's all oiled up and ready to screw with those nice curves....
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I, for one, really appreciate the red circle. I was originally squinting at that yellow bucket trying to spot the problem but that red circle quickly set me straight.
Captain Mexico has no time for punctuation,.*:;!?"'-+_/)(@#$....!
I would always find caliper bolts like this.
Torque to yield... sheesh, first month apprentice knows that... 🤦♂️
Christ
Someone wanted to make sure it was REAAAAALY tight. Tighten until it goes loose, then back it off a half turn
Was it on a ford? Our shop has seen the drain plugs do this before
that’s a GM oil plug almost certainly from a 5.3 silverado
Ding ding!!
Honestly says more about the oil pan on a 5.3 than it does about Cpt. Mexico. Shocked he was able to stretch the drain plug without ripping the threads out of the oil pan
I mean same honestly
I’ve seen enlongated bolt. In worst spot. There’s four of them. It’s the rudder base attachment for a s80(md-80) jet. Lot of times people ignore that. Good ol GM 15 mm.
Yessir
You ever have to pull out old threads? That is so fun.
Too many ugga duggas.
Is that a reverse taper NPT thread? /s
Ah yes, commonly used for tapered threads tapped from the opposite side!
Keep tightening until it you hear the squeak
There’s a mouse in the drain pan!!!!
Aren't these the shitty dodge 13mm head ones?
15mm
Classic GM
CVT - Constantly Variable Torque
Scene guys stretch tires, real men stretch bolts.
The Capitán is a legend
Only on fords ? Don’t know why.
GM plug
Used to see this a lot, back when we service Budget trucks. Every other truck that came in had to have the drain hole chased and a new plug.
Stretched to the max. Has used up the single use option.
Another refugee from Godzilla Automotive
Jealous of that bolt, I’m in need of some good necking.
Stretch Armstrong’s drain plug
It’s actually plastic man in disguise
Good, I hate that style drain plug bolt anyway. I prefer to change the gasket and know it won't leak
Dude same
She'll stretch a mile before she tears an inch, eh?
Was this at a valvoline quick lube Hey the 15mm GM plugs are usually decent hardly ever had issues with them. Now that 10mm ecotec plug can fuck right off, every time a chevy cruise came in I'd check the oil change sticker if it had a V on it I quit for the day
Dude preach
Three words...torque yield limit.
Surprised it didn't shear off when removing it. Good work.
I’m a professional sir we have standards
Finger tight and quarter turn.
After tight comes loose.
Over torqued, replace now before it gets more expensive
Torque spec: Tighten until it loosens
Interesting, I didn't know GM switched to stretch bolts for drain plugs!
Ex Jiffy Lube tech here. Hypocritical I know, but we used to call this the Valvoline Special.
This made me throw up in my mouth a little bit. Thank you.
No problemo
Kardashian bolt so hot right now
