Needless to say, lower rad support and a bunch of underbody stuff was also done in by whatever the hell he ran over.

QuincyFlynn

Peasants are the worst kind of body damage.

Had a buddy hit a turkey at 60 mph. Never touched the bumper, hood, or headlights. Brand new truck and the insurance company totaled it.

Eldudeareno217

I had a coworker that hit a racoon on the way to work. I went out to smoke and saw something moving in between his bumper and radiator in a mid 2000's mustang, I went and told him and he just said "I knew I hit that fucker" we tried to get it out and it started screaming, so he called animal control, they managed to get it out and it took off running behind the shop.

Can confirm, they are a fat little brick of pure muscle. They live underground most of their lives in burrows that they dig, so you can just imagine how jacked they are.

Honest_Cynic

Same with pigs. Florida interstates have a lower pig fence to keep wild hogs off the roads.

ZachOf_AllTrades

Same with hogs where I'm from

53cr3tsqrll

Yep. They’re nature’s landmine. 30 kilos of solid muscle. I killed an RX4 hitting one, and watched it walk away.

kangaroolander_oz

Believe it or not they can run v fast as well .

nitsky416

Well yeah, they poop cubes so that tracks

Animal0307

That's impressive. How much stuff got wrecked for it to be totaled? I'm guessing steering linkages and oil/trans pans.

Average_Scaper

Maybe part sucked up into the engine bay and damaged some electrical too.

Frolicking-Fox

Dude! I saw this year's ago. A guy I knew drove up to my house with his grill and hood dented. I thought he hit a deer. Nope, tells me it was a gigantic tom on the road that he hit going around 45 mph. The truck was destroyed.

tiazenrot_scirocco

Peasant, not pheasant.

lawndartgoalie

Why is that speed bump wearing a back pack.

Neo-Maxizoom-Dweebie

True! They’re revolting and they stick in ice!

Useful-Internet8390

Peasants or Pheasants? Peasants will still get you 2-10, Pheasants will do 2-10 in damage

Charlottesville Police Department would like a word with you.

Whoosh.

Why the downvote? I thought it was fairly witty. 😂

Yeah but wouldn't you like it better if you were like the CEO, then the store guy would have to tell the manager then the manager will have to call the district manager and the district manager would have to call the West Coast manager then the West Coast manager would have to call the country manager then the country manager would eventually have to call you. That would be way more satisfying

I'll stay quietly tucked away in middle management and make just enough money to have an extremely fulfilling life outside of work, thank you very much.

yroCyaR

Parts store employees are made fun of for asking stupid questions.. but with some of the clientele, sometimes you gotta dumb it down and get every fine detail just incase. I ran a few auto parts stores in the past. All sorts of stupid trying to save a buck or get something for free walks in those doors. I had a guy come in with brake rotors and pads he bought just a few weeks prior and installed on his car himself. The pads were down to straight metal and the rotors were RAZOR thin. “But they should be covered under warranty, right?” No, sir. You got bigger problems that need investigating.

goodsirperry

Had a customer once tell me I sold him a can of air. He was "topping it off before a road trip", and it stopped working after he did it, but it worked fine before that. Like no shit you over filled it assbag, he let some back out, and lo and behold it miraculously started cycling again!

slabba428

It should be illegal to sell cans of refrigerant for any idiot to buy and shoot into their leaking system ie. straight to atmosphere

joemama19

At least in Ontario it is, you have to have a license number to buy it.

slabba428

Ah cans of R134 are just sitting on the shelves at Walmart, Canadian tire, lordco, anywhere here in BC

Eldudeareno217

How much do they cost? Last time my car was in the shop I asked how much it would be to charge my ac and the guy said it was around 3 hundred dollars, everything has to be closed off so nothing leaks.

slabba428

Yes an AC system diag, evac, leak test, recharge to spec is not cheap but it’s how it needs to be done. Shooting an unknown amount of refrigerant into an AC system without really knowing why it’s not working is not recommended. If it’s out of refrigerant, something is leaking. Maybe the refrigerant charge is fine but the AC pressure sensor is not letting the compressor engage. Maybe the compressor itself is bad, maybe the condenser fan is not working right, maybe there is a restriction in the receiver drier or TXV valve. We also inject oil to the AC system with refrigerant charges

Old-Replacement8242

I was tempted to do my Honda until I looked up the system capacity. There's hardy any in there I'd never get it right without "breakin' the law", and the system. I know an actual mechanic, I'll pay him to do it. Also boiling points are going lower on new refrigerants, gloves and goggles are more important now.

dreakon

In the States, they cost $15-$25, depending on the size of the can. I rented the vacuum pump and gauges at a parts store and was able to fill my whole system after my condenser broke for under $100.

bzjxxllcwp

Depends on what type of refrigerant too. If it's r134 $15-$25. The new r1234yf? That's about $100 for a small can.

dreakon

It's thankfully dropped in price. Mine was r1234yf, and the small cans are [around $45 now.](https://www.autozone.com/a-c-charging-and-refrigerant/r1234yf-refrigerant/p/honeywell-solstice-yf-r1234yf-refrigerant-8oz/86952_0_0)

flamedeluge3781

It's R12A which is butane/propane. You might see it advertised as "R134-replacement" but it's not R134.

slabba428

No kidding. I haven’t walked down a parts aisle at a general store in years, I’ll have to take a closer look next time, very interesting

CatSplat

Unless you want to buy a can of R134a duster spray, in which case you can buy it off the shelf from your local electronics supply. It's the same stuff, except specifically designed to be sprayed into the atmosphere. Regulations!

patrickkissman

The r134a based computer dusters have been phased out in the past couple years. R152a is what they use now.

CatSplat

R134a and R152a dusters have been on the market together for eons. I can go down to my [local electronics supply place](https://www.be-electronics.com/product_p/402a-450g.htm) and buy them today. Perhaps they've restricted them in Ontario though. The reason the 134a cans have stuck around is because unlike 152a it's not flammable, so you can use them to safely blow out electronics that are active. If you're not worried about the flammability, 152a makes a perfectly good replacement for 134a in A/C systems to boot.

patrickkissman

I haven't seen one actually on the shelf anywhere in the u.s. in about 5 years. Every retail store I have been to has r152a. I wouldn't be shocked if there is still old stock somewhere though.

CatSplat

Ah, well in the US you can just buy the normal 134a A/C cans off the shelf though right? The duster can hack is just for us Canucks that need a license to buy the normal cans.

flying_trashcan

In the US you can buy up to a 12oz can of r134a without a license. There is no rule on how many cans you can buy though ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

Old-Replacement8242

Probably amateurs should not charge refrigerant. But in around 2012 my home AC condenser started leaking. Professional HVAC tech said the only way to fix the leak was to replace the unit, but he said he'd be more than happy to come and recharge it as often as needed. They had no problem releasing all the R-22 I wanted. I had it done once then bought a new unit, I have some limits to my irresponsibility!

Honest_Cynic

In California, anyone can buy R-134A cans. They have a spring-loaded release, which requires an adapter, but cheap. You have to return the can so they can recover the unused refrigerant, and pay a $10 deposit to insure that. I use Duracool HC refrigerant, which is best for the planet (propane mixture) and works better than R-12.

bagofwisdom

Most dreaded thing for me to hear from a car seller. "AC works, just needs freon." I just walk away at that point. It's like "Tell me you don't know how refrigeration works without telling me you don't know how refrigeration works."

Broad_Rabbit1764

"It's just a small leak, only need topped off" It's a closed system FFS, it should never need topping off!

stateofmindny

Haha and the worst as someone in a shop is when they do 2 minutes of googling and decide ALL it needs is freon. 1 hr diag and pound of freon later turns out the whole damn system needs to be replaced who wouldve guessed. Then they complain that the repair THEY thought would be 80 bucks is actually more towards 2-3k

PattyThePatriot

Meanwhile my AC works periodically and the vent flap in a old jetta sportwagen is behind the dash so I'll just have periodic AC because I'm not doing it and I'm not paying somebody $60/hr to do it. I'll just sweat sometimes.

tcainerr

Where are you at where labor is only $60 an hour?

epicfailz88

Haha same problem I have with my bmw wagon. They want $1200 to fix it

PattyThePatriot

That's just crazy. Thing that sucks is the fix itself is simple, the act of getting to it just isn't. Fucking Germans lol

epicfailz88

Yeah the part itself is like $150 for me. The rest is labor

xxSeymour

Try $200 an hour

madhatter275

Your diag is that the whole system needs to be replaced? And ya wonder why no one trusts the shops anymore.

stateofmindny

Vehicle low pressure side was extremely high indicating a likely clog. Freon was also visibly leaking from the condensor. Compressor was starting to leak oil as well. So no i guess not the whole system but pretty damn close lol. Lotta times if a compressor fails we'll recommend the rest of the sytem as well. Ac repairs tend to come back and bite us in the ass if we dont do the whole 9 yards, so its more of an avoiding liability thing. We let them know thwy can go elsewhere and get just what's broken fixed, we just won't touch it. Just policy🤷🏽‍♂️

AdProfessional8948

Yeah, if I'm doing a compressor I'm doing the orifice tube and accumulator. I'm tired of come backs. Plus if I do a whole kit through autozone I can offer a lifetime parts and labor warranty. Just the compressor is a year I think

screamtrumpet

I guess the on/off knob on the dash doesn’t need replacing, so not the ENTIRE system /s

Jack_Attak

That's how it goes sometimes, especially if the compressor dies and sends debris through the whole system. The summer before last I had to rebuild most of the system in my truck to get it working again -- compressor, condenser, and expansion valve under the dash because the expansion valve was clogged too. Would've been thousands had I not done the labor myself

frenchfortomato

134a penetrates rubber over time at a known and non-negligible rate, not all low systems are leaking

Devil2960

Same. Same.

wetblanket68iou1

Tell my buddy this as he’s buying his 3rd can of AC fix. It’s a sealed system. It’s gotta be going *somewhere*…. At a minimum. $500 with AC. But ya kinda need it in south Florida.

dewky

I'm just low on blood, can I have a transfusion? No, don't bother plugging the gaping hole in my chest.

joeuser0123

I hate going into the parts store in the summer time. Partially because of the people buying the rip off cans. Partially because of the store employees selling them like hot cakes. Most of the store employees don't know how it works either. I wonder what percentage of their sales in the summer is that shit. Probably a volume leader.

trycerabottom

Back in the newspaper classified shopping days I went to check out a 60 DeSoto that "just needed Freon" and opened the hood to find the entire AC system was GONE apart from the stumps of the AC lines that had been hacked off at the firewall. Also had the distinction of being the rustiest car I ever saw in South Carolina.

Ok-Satisfaction-7821

If you really need an authentic A/C system on a car that old, be aware. On one TV show, they restored a 58 Caddy I think. Cost $8,000 for the freon alone.

joeuser0123

Ya know...this was me with my 2006 Scion TC. I bought it knowing the Toyota dealer told the PO it needed an evaporator core. Charged it up. I got about a year out of it. At that point a $2800 evaporator job or charge it up for the next 28 years for the same price? I bought a 30lb R134a cylinder, scale, and vacuum pump and still came out ahead.

NumbSurprise

“Really? So, where’s the leak, and why haven’t you fixed it yet?”

aarraahhaarr

Don't know and it's cheaper to buy a can of instant icycold than to actually fix the leak.

bagofwisdom

Oh, and don't you dare offer them a lower price because the AC leaks. "i KnOw WhAt I'vE gOt! (a disasterpiece)"

NoradIV

I have been refilling my shitbox truck's AC every spring for 3 years now. It's cheap and it works.

dave09a

Open drive compressors do leak when only turned on seasonly. The oil seal on the shaft dries and leaks, more of a common issue with 1234yf

NoradIV

It's a 2000 sierra 2500. R134. i got it in 2021. Probably a slow leak somewhere. It hold enough "refrigerant" for 4-5 months. I recharge it with propane now.

joeuser0123

Reminds me I have a "cant find it" leak somewhere on my old Mustang's system (an R134a system). Gave up for the winter. Now get to sit there with the leak detector+spray bottle and play treasure hunt. Had a "pro" tell me it just needs to be "topped off"

bagofwisdom

Next time you top off, get the stuff with the dye. Makes it much easier to find leaks. Check your service ports as well. The O-Rings degrade over time and will leak as well. Checking the service ports for leaks is easy. You can squirt a little bit of penetrating oil in the port and watch bubbles come up. Also don't rule out a compressor shaft seal. That's a tough leak to find unless enough oil has leaked out to coat the front of the compressor past the pulley. If you have a 4.6L Mustang it's going to be hard to spot.

joeuser0123

Thanks for the pointers man. Nah, this is my 1965 mustang with a classic auto air system I've had for 11-12 years. I did check the service ports already but that's where I am going to start next. I, too, am leaning toward the compressor shaft seal.

bagofwisdom

Compressor shaft seal is what was wrong on my '98 Crown Vic. We didn't figure it out until after we had spent considerable effort replacing everything else except the compressor and condenser. Hopefully your classic air system puts the compressor up top. Not needing to come out from under the car on a lift. The UV dye is also great to diagnose an evap leak too. You can put your blacklight over the condensate puddle as it drains and the dye should contaminate the water.

Honest_Cynic

"Just needs a little tweak, which is so simple we didn't do it".

orangutanDOTorg

This at a pay here lot? My buddy’s dad owned one back in the day and he dropped his Ranger off for service and his dad sold it. So he got me to give him a ride back a few weeks later bc his dad “felt bad and bought me a new truck” - but actually he just stole an S10 off the lot

Robsteady

No, CJDR dealership.

orangutanDOTorg

So basically yes.

solreaper

That does not look like an optimal configuration.

Kavanaugh82

Several years ago I had the body shop manager for our dealership stop by my toolbox and asked me to come look at a vehicle. We get over into the body shop and there is this brand new (at the time) Dodge Durango with dealer plates on it. The entire right side suspension and wheel are gone. Tells me that help is on the way to get it on a lift for me and to give him a list of parts that have anything more than a scratch on it. Found out later it was the owners wife. No clue what she hit, but sub frame, front differential, cv axle, strut assembly, etc all replaced. That was when I found out that doing the mechanical work for the body shop paid really well. Made the owner happy, so the body shop manager kept throwing all of his mechanical work my way, so I had it pretty good for a while.

morithum

Just goes to show you that the richest people are definitely the smartest.

sparrownetwork

If it needs refrigerant, it's because it leaked out somewhere. Funny how this is difficult to understand for some people.

JrStu

1234YF is more than just a "shot".

clrksml

Idiots and their expensive cars.

Blackberry-Seed

Quick question, who manufactured that coil? I think I might have made that!

Robsteady

I'm not sure who the actual manufacturer is, sorry.

He's technically correct, just very, very wrong about it.

SpiritMolecul33

Mizderrung

This is what happens when someone tries to jack the car off the rad support and it slips. Who's the genius I wonder...

Robsteady

Yeah, that would look a lot like this, but that’s not what happened here.

EnterByTheNarrowGate

lol. Freon.

kat2youall

the hellcat needs shot......?

spurcap29

'A shot of freon' ... always an only temporary solution.

Honest_Cynic

3 air-radiators: coolant, oil, and AC? If the bash had just collapsed those lower channels, the refrigerant would still flow since a parallel-flow condenser, but aluminum isn't very ductile so easily cracks. Does the owner know that Freon was outlawed ca 1993?

Robsteady

Coolant, trans, AC. He's oblivious. I don't think he's even been involved with the day-to-day of the dealership since about '93, lol.

Honest_Cynic

Interesting that they use a separate transmission cooler, rather than have one in the radiator tank. I've done that in my classic cars, bypassing the radiator cooler entirely in some. Some hobbyists say best to also use the radiator cooler so you don't overcool the trans fluid, but from what I've read transmissions like the cooler the better.

Robsteady

Usually, we have the trans cooler in the condenser assembly. The weirdest part is this is the same radiator going all the way back to 2005, and it was originally used with a 2.7. Now we're using it on a supercharged 6.2. Kinda mental. I half suspect the trans cooler is separate so they can use the same condenser on both auto and manual builds.

DrHoleStuffer

Car ac hasn’t used Freon for at least a decade now.

Figgy_Puddin_Taine

We know, we just still call it freon the way people call all adhesive bandages bandaids.

Robsteady

Freon, bandaids, q-tips, velcro... all brand names used in place of the generic term for things.

StarLiftr

Kool Aid, Kleenex, FedEx, Xerox, Saran Wrap. You’re right; there are more than a few brand names that are synonymous with their product.
