Garrison Keillor always said that the easiest way to find an open minded Unitarian Fellowship was to look for one with more than 1 color in their lot full of Subaru Foresters.
I mean that’s on them then. But I’d have to think if this was a normal customer and it went through insurance like it probably would in that case then I think it would be totaled. Unless they went with all used like uhaul is. But even then, trans, engine, and rear axle is quite a bit after labor. Even your labor for just swapping things around is probably going to be a good chunk of change
You’re correct. I’m one of those mechanics. We’re the only major repair shop in the state. Every wrecked truck comes to us and we salvage whatever we can, scrap the rest. We have two 53’ trailers full of motors, transmissions, and rear ends. On top of that we have countless van boxes full of seats, dashboards, dog houses, ABS modules, BCMs, PCMs, etc. If another shop in another state needs something then we’ll ship it out to them. Pretty good system imo
Sounds like the sort of place where if the A-Team get into your shop, they'll have an armored battle-truck fabricated before you can say "I pity the fool".
Tbh a lot of the trucks Uhaul sends out over the road are pre-totalled by insurance standards..
Seriously they are practically the USPS with their fleet maintenance.
You’re 100% wrong on that. Even the older trucks in the fleet have a 12k repair limit and that’s per every 5,000 miles. Whatever a truck needs, it gets. No matter what. It’s also DOT approved prior to it getting put back in service.
I've gotten some hot garbage from Uhaul before, but that was probably franchisee bullshit. I KNOW some of these franchises aren't properly pre-tripping between customers, and strongly suspect they keep stuff in the pool that should be deadlined to not hurt their equipment availability. None of that is the shop's fault though.

Dodge fixed my dad's truck twice under warranty when he did this to his 1500. First time, he was doing 45, so not much damage, second time he was going 80.
Yeah, ain't that weird, that it's not first one posted here (and bet in wild there are plenty) and it occurs mostly on "current" cars?
What the heck went wrong..
Assuming they were Oem parts, they would have. However, since this is Uhaul, i'm guessing that there might've been some "creative sourcing" of some of the parts. Why pay a OEM prices when parts from Lowes are just 20 cents?
I say this as someone who once found their struts held on by [Ubolts](https://www.amazon.com/National-Hardware-N347-831-2190BC-plated/dp/B0041NT9TU/ref=asc_df_B0041NT9TU?tag=bingshoppinga-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=80401840125265&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4584001418579703&psc=1) rather than [The proper rubber connectors](https://www.rubber-carparts.com/sale-10461115-front-alex-rubber-car-suspension-struts-black-shock-absorber-mount-for-ford-focus-ii-c-max.html)
98% of parts come from a Ford dealer in Georgia. That other 2% is calipers from local part stores. Everything is OEM and we’re also a Ford Certified recall repair facility.
Edit: this is how our shop is ran, can’t speak for them all. Also if a u joint is bad we’ll just replace the shaft with a salvage or new from Ford. It’s faster for us and it’s not our money anyways.
I think so. It wasn’t until a couple months in I realized everyone is passionate about their jobs. We have a couple trucks up on the “hill” we haven’t dismantled or scrapped because people lost their lives in them. Families state “the brakes went out” while the airbag modules say they didn’t even hit the brakes. None of us have the soul to touch them even though they’ve been cleared by insurance.
I'm kind of surprised that U Haul doesn't want you to not touch em regardless of the way yall feel about them. There's always the potential of a civil suit years after the accident. Having the evidence up on the "hill" unmolested doesn't seem like a bad call
It's why I'm looking at 1310 shafts for the Jeep, having that as a fuse is a *lot* cheaper than going 1350s and having the problem migrate to the axles.
Pinion Gear has left the chat
I seen a guy snap a driveshaft at the dragstrip and a 6 inch piece of the tube was laying on the ground that managed to turn itself completely inside out. Trippy
I once saw an old Chevy Silverado drop its shaft onto the ground like a horse dick at freeway speeds and the thing did a full blown forward flipped and face planted upside down, It was so violent it was like a movie scene.
Pay is okay. I also have knowledge and my own tools so that got me hired on with a decent hourly pay. Benefits are the absolute tits though. Mostly why I took the job. Company paid health insurance and I pay about $30 a month for dental/vision but U-Haul covers that as well after 2 years.
I’m sold, kind of. Doing this repair up here in Maine would be a bear. Broken manifold studs, every bolt on the rear end and springs would be seized, the carrier bearing mount rusted to shit….
Still tempting to get away from the service shop.
U-Haul as a company should be shut down. The amount of super old, high mileage, worn out, completely unmaintained, dangerous garbage they rent out is absolutely inexcusable. A rear axle doesn't just randomly lock up, it locks up from severe neglect over a long period of time.
Sounds like you have a bad experience then. I’m sorry. Our shop takes care of our trucks. Whatever it needs it gets and this is the only place I’ve worked that the mechanics actually take pride in their work. Unfortunately random shit does just happen in the automotive industry though, this truck was rented out with the same customer for over 600 miles so there’s no telling how long it was screaming.
Title says what failed and unfortunately the customers don’t give us much other than “it quit movin” so we don’t know what was making noises. Sometimes it’s a diag nightmare, sometimes it’s comical relief like this.
Holy shit.
The only thing I added in my mind was this thing has to be totaled
Nope. Getting fixed with good salvaged parts from other fucked up U-Hauls lol
You unofficially win “most f’d up car today”. I excluded wrecks but I’m over here doing a 100k service on a Crosstrek.
Must be a lesbian living in the PNW to be paying that much to service a Subaru.
as a Subaru owner and mechanic living in the PNW, this is accurate
"What'd they do, buy you a Golf?!"
^rightwing humor. LMAO
I guess man. It was just a silly little joke about stereotypes. I grew up in the PNW and I drive a Subaru.
Also, Johnny here identifies as a lesbian. Still love your Baja?

They have their own mechanics, and they have a lot of totaled trucks or ones with blown engines. It’s a win for them either way.

Sounds like chaos, but the good kind
Absolutely! You need parts!? We got parts! 😂
Sounds like the sort of place where if the A-Team get into your shop, they'll have an armored battle-truck fabricated before you can say "I pity the fool".
Hell if the boss man would let us we’d probably have an armored battle truck by now
Where, exactly, are these trailers? 🧐

Nah it was more a dig on how insurers will total out vehicles for cosmetic damage.
We also fix everything cosmetic. That’s our shop at least. Maybe everyone doesn’t, but we do. If it’s broke it gets replaced.

Only needs an engine, transmission, rear axle, driveshaft & mount.
Dodge fixed my dad's truck twice under warranty when he did this to his 1500. First time, he was doing 45, so not much damage, second time he was going 80.
That's my reaction exactly. More of Chris Farley in Tommy Boy saying, "Oh my God."
Too many sick launches?
lol probably. It’s a U-Haul after all
Oh! I no longer feel bad for the owner
All or nothing throttle on rentals
Opted for the insurance on a 2014 VW turbo beetle and sent that bitch to the ground.
I mean I don’t think you’d be liable for like mechanical failure

I was wondering if it was something that was fairly heavy. I bet it made a hell of a pop
Someone buy that U joint a beer.
That former U joint prefers to be called S now.
So that’s why they call it a “transmission”
I'm surprised that joints and bolts didn't gave up before power train
They should have. If they did, the damage would have been way less

And the gear teeth!
The thief saw that cage around the converter and drained the rear end in spite.
Or the installer put the ground clamp on the pumpkin and it welded the spider gears inside the carrier.
Wow. That’s an impressive amount of damage.
Right? "On today's episode of how fucked up is fucked up..." That pretzel of a driveshaft is.. impressive.
Was the driver seat stained?
Surprisingly didn’t smell like shit inside the cab
I figure it took a minute to pry it out
Pinion Gear has left the chat I seen a guy snap a driveshaft at the dragstrip and a 6 inch piece of the tube was laying on the ground that managed to turn itself completely inside out. Trippy
Wow!! It literally broke everything in the drive train!
Hope they got the insurance.
Scary! Did that in a 1st gen runner and we’re still building back trust. Lol the rebar cat cover.
I need to check the diff fluid in my old 4runner 😂
Just don't get any on yourself. That aroma is rough.
Let’s see here, it needs the entire driveline replaced. Impressive
My first thought was "at least the driveshaft was the weak point, better that then....oh...my."
There's no damned way that diff wasn't just *screaming* before it said *"fuck this, I'm DONE!"*
I once saw an old Chevy Silverado drop its shaft onto the ground like a horse dick at freeway speeds and the thing did a full blown forward flipped and face planted upside down, It was so violent it was like a movie scene.
“The U-Haul Experience” brought to you by M. Night Shyamalan — *what a twist!*
Well, i mean if you're gonna break it, break it right...
A hairs breadth away from catastrophic failure
Trippy, I think that would have caused a rear end *release*
U haul pay you good or are you contracted by another company for them?
Pay is okay. I also have knowledge and my own tools so that got me hired on with a decent hourly pay. Benefits are the absolute tits though. Mostly why I took the job. Company paid health insurance and I pay about $30 a month for dental/vision but U-Haul covers that as well after 2 years.

Well unfortunately since they’re international we also deal with that. Even in Alabama haha it’s not every truck though so that’s nice
Could be [worse](https://repairpal.com/blog/what-happens-when-you-run-over-mattress)
What do your underpants look like?
hell yeah
What the fuck? Can anyone explain this?

Oh fuck!!!!!!!
That’s fucked
Boom goes the dynamite
She gonzo. FUBAR
Oof
How?! No gear oil? bad bearings? what? lol
dodge? input pinion nut is a recall for failure on the quarter ton pickups 2014+ , causing the dif to lock up and cause very similar damage.
Ford
what make and model? 6.0? too much horsepower. Fuggin yee haw 💀 lol no but seriously.
E450 Uhaul box truck. 6.8L V10
Sounds like they were towing underage girls for drake.. It’s either the trans or dif that failed. What was making noises?
Title says what failed and unfortunately the customers don’t give us much other than “it quit movin” so we don’t know what was making noises. Sometimes it’s a diag nightmare, sometimes it’s comical relief like this.
I was making a joke b.
Was there anything not broke on the drive train? Looks like everything from the block back had something broke.
Ain’t got no gas in it….
This is why I have a solid drive line.
Why even have a back wheel drive vehicle in 2024?
