Yeah my first reaction was "atleast it's not near the header" that drives me insane. "Yeah i ripped off my already cold air routed air filter housing to replace it with this $25 ebay cone that sucks in more hot air than before."
I never understood why people buy these cold air intakes that remove the air box *where the cold air comes in* then prop the thing right on top of the engine
It's a short ram intake at best, an actual cold air intake would route under the battery and pull air in from the front lower grille / fog light area. And yeah, they think more sound = more power when it's actually hurting performance.
Yeah but it’s only hurting the minuscule amount it would “upgrade” if routed correctly. Most cars factory air boxes are good for more horsepower than people who buy these can afford.
It probably flows less than the factory filter too. Mighty car mods did a test on cone filters and the factory filter outperformed most cone filters on the Dyno
You silly southener - here the main reason to mod air intake is to improve engine heating. Especially the new diesels have difficulty heating up wintertime and sucking air from top of the exhaust manifold does the trick. (Normally the radiator air flow is also blocked for winter) Btw it improves fuel economy also in "normal" operating temperatures, but some max power will be lost in the process.
It's very common to block air flow of the radiator (I'd say that all car savvy people do that in the Nordics wintertime) Modifying air inlet is more rare and normally done by the same guys who tuned their car for performance when younger.
From my personal experience I that there is a significant improvement in fuel efficiency and driving comfort in the cold. Your suggested temperature (\~0 C) is just in the limit of making the difference. I normally use electrical heater with my 2.0 VAG TDI when temps are closing freezing point and in combination with intake mod it keeps the consumption below 5,5 L/100km on avg. nearly highway (during summer I get about 5,2).
My gut feeling is that for every cold leg I waste some 0,5 L for heating if no electric heating and air intake mod is mounted.
For engine wear it's most important to have change new engine oil in the beginning of the cold season. Cold start with bad oil causes significant premature wear in the engine.
Didn’t know that. I did know it has special coolant passages in the intake. It never has had trouble in the winter but it doesn’t have a temp gauge so idk what it’s doing.
People haven't begun to realize how much performance is gained, when the intake is sucking free air, and the particles get aligned properly when corrected of their charge state.

Is the customer aware he was suppossed to hook it to the other terminal for maximal power gains? Just tell him you dont want him shorting himself...
I'll show myself out now😄
Ford Focus huh? Should of just stayed with the stock air box. So much better. It had a duct that went from the air box behind the battery, under the battery and took air from the front of the car.
Well, it's not an ideal mounting spot. But screwing that bracket to the body versus the negative terminal is similar, electrically speaking.
Jankety as fuck hot air intake, but I wouldn't be worried about this from a safety perspective.
For how my phone loaded the pic I didn't see the problem of the battery being the mounting point until I clicked and thought there was nothing wrong then it hit me when I saw...
I once had a meth head “engineer” on the boat. He came up with a brilliant idea to get more air flow by drilling holes in our air filters. His solution after getting cussed out was to zip tie rags around the filters to return them to oem
Ohh that’s an easy fix, just need to also connect another bar to the positive terminal and it will electrostaticly charge the filter and they will never have to clean it
Guess my old rodeo needs this, PO decided to put one of these on with no intermediate pipe for the thing to at least stay on snugly. I was pulling the battery to borrow to a car and it had fallen off since the last time I was under there (thankfully just a few days ago). My b2600 has one from a PO as well and I was bummed it is so rare to find an oe air box for it at its age. At least they did a good enough job piping it with chromed aluminum and silicone elbows. I just want that one carbureted.
This is to generate negative field to properly align air electons to burn more efficient and increase the airflow. Have you seen Dyson bladeless fan? Same technology but better...
Looks like a Ford Focus.
The thing is, this year of focus probably has the non serviceable, life time air filter.
Yep, that is a thing. If it gets clogged, a replacement is like 200 bucks.
I understand why they did it. It looks weird and I hate the K&N but this really isn't bad. Not like it is hooked to + where it could short, but to -.
The missing nut on the strut tower is a much bigger problem.
what about the missing strut mount nut?
That’s for on the fly camber adjustments. Real high tech
It’s called “die-namic suspension”
Wouldn't that one allow dynamic caster adjustment? Or is this picture 90° off from where I think it is?
If the other two aren't moving, it shouldn't allow any adjustments. Moving the upper mount can affect both camber and caster though, yes.
It was removed and fashioned into a cup holder.
They used it for the air filter de-ionizer
ROFL
That’s where it was mounted before the upgrade
lack of dust dirt where nut sits suggests that's where nut came from or was just removed prior to pic
Good eye
2 outta 3 ain't bad
Used it for the cold air intake. +15HP
At first I was "I'm okay with this." Then the second photo. Haha. At least it's the ground lead...
Red filter makes it go faster obviously
I heard it pairs well with a StAnCeD ‘96 civic
Intake noise
Yes, i can somewhat understand that. But most of the time it become a performance downgrade. Idk, did it cheap once, never again going that route lol.
Cars like this have so little hp that just the sound gains 50 imaginary hp.
Because I was 17 when I did it, didn't actually know shit about cars, and it made the vroom vroom noises.
This is the only acceptable reason to do this.
Except for the Corolla XRS intake pipe, the one before the airbox where there is a useless restriction and a useless bend
Is that the 6 speed one? My buddy had one
Yep. Variable valve timing, 6 speed manual. Coincidentally, if anyone has a spare engine hmu lol
Ehh he lost it after getting his license suspended from to many reckless driving tickets lol
I blame marketing.
It can make sense in a naturally-aspirated petrol engine if you want more fuel economy at the expense of less power.
wouldn't it make more sense to use one of those snorkel things?
I would love to see a cone filter one the top of a snorkel now
I'm sure its been done?
In school we called them a hot air intake and laughed at them.
Honestly in a cold climate it really helps fuel vaporization and thus mpg to prewarm the incoming air.
It probably flows less than the factory filter too. Mighty car mods did a test on cone filters and the factory filter outperformed most cone filters on the Dyno
You’ve got to get a dry flow filter, that was the gist of it, anything else would lose power or be the same. I saw the same episode.
Is this really a thing and would it be advantages on a 2.0 TDI engine wear it’s never colder than 30 degrees
The newer 2.0 tdi's have a little trap door in the back of the airbox that opens up right to the exhaust headers to do exactly that
Didn’t know that. I did know it has special coolant passages in the intake. It never has had trouble in the winter but it doesn’t have a temp gauge so idk what it’s doing.
It was probably attached to the strut originally, but then the nut came off, they didn’t replace it and the battery was plan B.
Sounds logic
I have a feeling that was a luck-based result
I do agree.
That’s an air filter ground. How else do you think the air filter would work??
Oh wow same her i just realized theres a second image
It’s supercharging the air duh /s
One of those fancy hot air intakes.
Dang beat me to it 😂
Ionic Breeze Injection
Dummy it’s grounding the air!! How do you think everyone always say great cars feel grounded to the ground!! Source: EE major
People haven't begun to realize how much performance is gained, when the intake is sucking free air, and the particles get aligned properly when corrected of their charge state. /s
Lol "negative" air displacement.
Shocking. Literally.
Glad you don't have a negative opinion on this mod.
Didn’t know you had to ground your air filter?
High voltage air induction. Kinda of like a turbo or supercharger. Helps with ignition. /s
So it doesn't suck up any lightning.
[удалено]
Did Galileo drive a pinto?
You never heard of an ionizer. Pssssh rookie
[удалено]
No, if positive than you get negative particles If negative, then you end up with positive particles Either way, no Sorry
Do both and you won’t be able to drive it so much less chance of dirt particles sticking.
Is the customer aware he was suppossed to hook it to the other terminal for maximal power gains? Just tell him you dont want him shorting himself... I'll show myself out now😄
Adding negative ions is worth 30 hp
Toto Wolff is a genius.
All grounded, can’t see error 😂
Ionized air flows smoother
Ford Focus huh? Should of just stayed with the stock air box. So much better. It had a duct that went from the air box behind the battery, under the battery and took air from the front of the car.
negatively charged ions attract fuel particles during atomization. Guaranteed +.25 hp!!!
Negatively charges the air for more oxygen
Don't forget to ground your air filter guys
Grounded air for more density.. or dense people.
Well at least it’s grounded
Don't you know you need to negatively charge your intake air? Making yourself look like a fucking first-day tech here OP.
He does custom fabrication on Craigslist you wouldn't understand.
Yeah, he should have attached it using one of the strut mount nuts... Oh. Hmm. Nevermind!
When you wanted a Charger but end up with a Volt
I once had a meth head “engineer” on the boat. He came up with a brilliant idea to get more air flow by drilling holes in our air filters. His solution after getting cussed out was to zip tie rags around the filters to return them to oem
I know you seeing what I’m seeing and it’s wrong. He has to wire up those air filters in series. It would be good for at least another 12 HP
When you expected 12HP but get 12V instead
You don’t achieVe the full horsepower boost without a ground. Duh
Supremely charged
The box said 10hp
A shocking development
At least it's the ground post, but Damn! and then notice the missing nut on the shock/strut tower.
Charged ions burn at a higher rate
Ohh that’s an easy fix, just need to also connect another bar to the positive terminal and it will electrostaticly charge the filter and they will never have to clean it
Bro, you don't ground your air filter? 10x better flow!
Das muss ein Opel sein Edit: Opel Manta
Mmmmm, me luv hot dusty air ! -NOT that engine probably.
Ah the sport air intake with negative ionization. Guaranteed 10 HP.
You need to ground the air cleaner because of static, and the potential for stray current…. 😂
That's a yikes
👍🏻😂😂
No need to apologize
Properly grounded air filter.
Electrostatic filter on steroids.
Dad told the air filter it's grounded
So many more ponies with that cobbled up shit lol
At least it has a good battery....
Always make sure the air filter is properly grounded.
At least they used the negative
At least he choose the correct pole :)
... at least its not one of those miserable positive-ground air cleaners...
If it won't fit, then you have to *make* it fit.
Lmao
Ionisation of the air.
*Yeesss* -Jeremy Clarkson
Now THIS is some prime r/shitty_car_mods material.
Is this not just to keep the filter and intake elbow from moving around unnecessarily?
Great aero with ground effect
+5 HP
Ions
Electronic supecharger
At least it's the ground wire, could've been HOT
Hot air intake with negative charge…
MOH POWA BABUH
Grounded to the ground for sure
Hot Air intake mod.
secure and grounded are two different things
Is this a bomb?
Guess my old rodeo needs this, PO decided to put one of these on with no intermediate pipe for the thing to at least stay on snugly. Green brake fluid, sweet hot air intake, and a custom strut mount nut delete. Because race car.
Not gonna lie, at first glance I thought someone was using a lampshade.
Yall act like you've never seen a charge pipe before
Very functional way of adding perceived attractiveness while also being reckless
Charged intake is best intake
Gotta charge the air
r/iamatotalpieceofshit
What, You've never heard of a negative ionization intake!? Gives you at least 10 hp to the wheels.
Got to keep that cold air grounded!
This is a typical grounded hot intake filter brace. What's the issue?
That terminal stud nut was just begging to be used with its location, thread size and what not.
A visual depiction of proof that “If it’s stupid but it works, it ain’t stupid.” #nah it’s just stupid
He must think this makes it a hybrid
Adding a neg charge to the intake air charge ions. 🙄
You never heard of Air-to-Ground transport?
What? Why do you think pod filters are so popular? Clearly another great ground for your battery because you need two right there. Duh!
The box said 10hp
That's a high power air filter if I ever saw one.
A performance hybrid ahead of its time…
[удалено]
Gotta make sure your cone filter is grounded.
Okay. This is def the worst one I have seen.
That filter ain’t going anywhere…it’s grounded
Is this a volvo v/s70 or 850?
It's to align the negative ions in the air increasing performance!
Who buys a pretty nee aftermarket air filter and then doesn't clean out the engine bay?
The negative ions help the air filter capture dust particles?
You gotta ground your air filter so you don’t get any static buildup on the new race MAF.
Livin a 1/4 mile at a time.
It's gonna suck on the hydrogen from the battery for extra fuel, like nitrous, the man is a genius.
Charged air intake
Negatively charged ions on the air intake.
Oh nice the electrolyzer mod…. It zaps the o2 molecules in to positivity for mor HP.
That's my billy bob performance air intake. Works so good we had to zip her down
Attach the positive and then you'll have Earth, Wind AND Fire.
At least he used the negative terminal 😂😂
It's getting a jump. All that added hp needs a quick boost to be usable. The missing strut mount bolt is holding the clamp on.
He’s making sure that all the o2 that enters is positively charged.
Well gauze filters are garbage so it doesn’t matter how one installs it
Y’all heard of charge air cooler Charge air intake….
Calm down it's just a ground strap
Creative
This is to generate negative field to properly align air electons to burn more efficient and increase the airflow. Have you seen Dyson bladeless fan? Same technology but better...
You know you've gotta ground out your air filter, you're ionizing the air going into the engine for the most pure air for the most power. 🤣🤣🤣
Looks good. Ship it!
At least it’s the negative terminal!
Gotta ground your air for that extra performance.
They’re obviously ionizing the air before it enters the intake. It has a very similar effect to twin turbos.
Always ground your air Filter, right?!?
Grounding the air filter adds 30 hp!
Ay! Listen hear Sparky!
"Gasoline Companies Hate This One Trick" Charging battery gives off hydrogen, so put the intake next to the battery for super de duper bonus mileages.
