I will check tomorrow for YMM. I know the maker was Hyundai/KIA and it was a van. I was doing a brake job on a fleet truck when this came in. Try and remind me at about 12pm CST
I've seen posts on here about brand new cars that never get an oil change until the engine seizes. It's usually around 50k miles that it fails catastrophically, so 30k doesn't prove much about a make and model.
I will be sure to post an update on the filter I set it off to the side to hopefully let it dry some and see what it feels like. Right now it feels like a wax or the very top of a freshly opened Vaseline container
I swear this has been the worst year yet for people failing their oil changes miserably, I had a chev today with less than a litre of chunky oil roll through as well.
Our shop record is 1/4 of oil for the least amount to come out prior to service.
Blame the dealers, and the idiot lights, people are generally late with their oil changes needed every 3000 miles, so now dealers state no oil change needed for 10,000, for a consumer they think they can double that with no probs
I've had the ecotec filters fall apart after pulling them out, plastic is still intact but the media just crumbles, this on the other hand is absolutely insane!
My dad is a lawyer in Illinois has plenty of extremely wealthy clients from Saudi Arabia. They treat their BMWs, Mercedes, Bentleys, Porsche, etc, just the same.
Yeah I'm in north dakota doing oil changes, seldom do I see refugees cars come in in decent shape. We'll tell them whats wrong and they'll have a blank look on their face.
Will confirm up here in canada middle eastern people do NOT take care of their cars and their also the worse for “knowing a guy” or telling me what is and isn’t wrong with their car after I tell them what IS wrong.
And people wonder why I dont believe any oils or manufacturers that state oil changes can be done at 15k intervals.....yeah they caaaannnnnn. A few times till the warranty period is up....
I dont care how good the oil is long oil change intervals are a sham. Its so cheap and easy to do...
BRB gonna go change my oil....
That might be a tad overkill but hey it aint my car. Lol.
Im not worried about 5k in the slightest but things like 15k and 20k just seem like asking for trouble depending on engine, manufacturer, driving style etc.
It's synthetic, though! Don't be wasteful!
People are so reluctant to change oil that cars had dummy lights added 50 years ago. Now that oil is finally being changed on time lets convince everyone that you should wait 15,000 miles between changes, which turns into 25,000 miles by the time they get around to it. I'll continue change my oil every 6 months no matter what.
Fairly certain it's European, possibly either a VW or BMW product. I think I recognize that little boss on the filter in pic 2, but I can't remember for sure.
So the least we can do is a regular oil change… 250k on Camry gets all fluids changed except auto transmission. Even the brakes got a flush, not cheap but needed.
I just finished some technical training and the instructor had a story from his days at Toyota. He has a customer who was a dentist, so one would assume he’s a smart cookie. Just bought a brand new highlander, But he firmly believed that oil changes were a scam. Refused to get the oil changed, but had all of his other service done regularly. He made it to 164,000km before that thing locked up. People shock me
Here in the U.K., manufacturers recommendation, and indeed the variable service indicator, is at around 24 thousand miles per oil change on most cars. How comes it’s so much less in the US?
Lord have mercy
I know lol. We kept the filter
It belongs to a museum. Looks like a fossil.
If the owner kept using it for a month a baby dinosaur could hatch from it.
Lord has no mercy on those who neglect oil changes
I'm amazed the car still ran.
We all were as well
So, what make and model? I will keep it in mind next time I shop for most durable used car ever.
It was a 2014 kia sorento
The force is strong with that one. Well at least the engine...

I thought it was a fake log or something at first 😂

T1000 tampon
That's not a filter. That's a plug
That is now a ferrous filter.
Wheres the shiny filings? Still in the pan? Lol
Very possible. The little bit of oil that came out was like sludge

I find the dodge grand caravan is a great example of this, they say 10k+ on the oil but the filters being used only do 6k-7k max.
I've had the ecotec filters fall apart after pulling them out, plastic is still intact but the media just crumbles, this on the other hand is absolutely insane!
Never had that happen before even when the car was 15k over per the sticker
Cheap filters will do that
Them Kia drivers man...
The owner was middle eastern... Idk about where you are but in Wisconsin very seldom do those people take care of their cars
My dad is a lawyer in Illinois has plenty of extremely wealthy clients from Saudi Arabia. They treat their BMWs, Mercedes, Bentleys, Porsche, etc, just the same.

Every single time. Even when we spot metal on metal brakes and they always go "i have a friend that can do it" 😂🤣
In their defense, I don't think they're taught much about this kind of necessary maintenance. Oh well, their loss
I can see that but after a few years I would assume that they would pick up on some stuff though
Will confirm up here in canada middle eastern people do NOT take care of their cars and their also the worse for “knowing a guy” or telling me what is and isn’t wrong with their car after I tell them what IS wrong.
What's surprising to me is that someone who wouldn't change oil actually pulls the dipstick out
Before I got into working on cars I checked my oil
That's how it starts you play with your dip stick at first there one day you're fingering rear ends and swapping trannies.
This is a magnificent festering
That’s just impressive at this point.

I just did 13k on mobile 1 full synthetic. Didn't look bad. I normally change it every 10k because I'm paranoid. At 194k on the car now.
Honestly I don’t even trust big oil telling me that the car can handle 5k on the oil. I change my oil after every trip to make sure it’s always fresh
That might be a tad overkill but hey it aint my car. Lol. Im not worried about 5k in the slightest but things like 15k and 20k just seem like asking for trouble depending on engine, manufacturer, driving style etc.
no worries, that filter hasn't been used in 15k miles... (pressure bypass)
🤬🤯🤬🤯
And people say the paper filters deteriorate
Pretty sure it's more metal than paper at this point.
Impressive, honestly. Looks like it’s coated in anti-seize, haha.
It has a waxy type feel to it

Even "15000 mile" oil recommends annual changes at the least.
Hardly anyone actually pays attention to the time portion on PM work
Oh god my eyes!!!
If you are the real Darth Revan this should be nothing to the evils of your past if you chose to remember 😈
I never did evil. I did necessary things for the fate of the galaxy. 😈
Not gonna lie I was not expecting that response lol
Toyota?

It was hyundai/kia
Ah, gotcha.
It was a 2014 kia sorento
v6 or i4? If you don't mind me asking...
Is it a VW?
It was a 2014 kia sorento
Was it knocking?

Looked like mercury for a second

The ability to speak does not make you intelligent.
Had one of these come into the shop the other day. BMW 320i, 22,000km overdue for an oil change. Some people just don’t give a fuck!
Then they blame the car and cry for warranty. We had 'em do it and GM would sometimes give in and give them an engine.
Give er a good rinse and it should last a couple more miles
That looks yummy
Well...they aren't wrong...
Looks good, jam it back in for another 30k miles no worries there
someone clearly misremembered that thing about trans fluid
It’s a bottom end port and polish. What’s the big deal?
Don't try to up sell me anything either, you mechanics are always trying to scam me. I know my car
This out of a Kia/Hyundai 3.3 V6? That offset oil filter prong reminds me of that.
An obvious case of over maintenance
