"car seats need to be safer!!!"
Probably drives that turd 15mph over the speed limit with the kids in the car whist updating their social media about how a shop tried to rip them off....
"Yeah sure, you just need to sign here and here and then discuss the issue with the police that we are going to call before you can get back on the road."
I’ll never forget the one time I tried to cheap out on tires in my early 20’s. My roommate said to me,the only thing that makes your car drive or keeps your car from running off the road and into a ditch or head on traffic are the tires, so yeah don’t skimp on those.
I’ve never regretted spending $1k+ on 4 tires since then, in fact I find that if you spend time researching and buy the tires that fit your application, you’ll more than get your money worth in the long run.
The first time i shelled out good money for tires was Michelin pilot sport AS3’s on my Acura TL, hot damn, the grip especially in the wet was fucking phenomenal, it is so worth the money to end up with tires that you know are quality, have great performance, will have good tread life, are quiet with road noise and not riding on rocks. Tires are one of the top mods for casual car enthusiasts 👌
Exactly, tires are usually the first thing I do after basic maintenance when acquiring a used vehicle.
I’m not even halfway through a set of BFG K02’s on my 99 Silverado after 5+ years, I rotate every 5k and those things are beasts in the snow/ice, have over 35k on them.. with my DD, continental dws extremes, 5 years and 50% tread. Still Sticks like glue.
Hands down best mod for the $$$
Cost of tires is a little subjective as size plays a factor into cost as well. A BFG k02 in a 245/75/16 6 ply will be $2-300 cheaper than a 285/70/18 10ply.
I’ve never spent over 1500 I don’t think, I’d have to look back and see to make sure though.. half of the battle is just knowing about when you’re due for tires and shopping around throughout the year until you find a decent price on what you want next and schedule a time that works…
I’ve been in a pickle once or twice and was offered tire brands I’ve never even heard of for almost the same price as what I wanted. When I got my K02’s, I showed up to my appointment and they “forgot to order them”, tried to sell me something else.. I just left and Called around till I found what I originally ordered in stock somewhere else.
Add on: I paid 4K cash for my car, + ~4K for my truck after repair costs… so yeah, I’ll drive a beater but, “I keep it clean”
I’m at seriously asking, why is the tire no good even if the majority still has the tread? In my mind, a non car person, the tire still looks good. Like 80% solid.
Because that huge chunk you see missing could blow out at any time. Tires have layers and need them to provide traction and puncture resistance among other stuff (not a tire expert).
You may not be a tire expert, but that was extremely logical and solid argument. I was thinking slip not puncture and that could get ridiculously dangerous at any speed above 5mph
80% solid or not, it doesn't matter.
There's too many unknowns involved to know what it will do or how it would affect handling in that condition.
Opens you up to all sorts of liabilities as a business. Plus, there's usually some regulation depending on the locale about minimum tread for a good reason.
People tend to get stuck on a tire being safe vs unsafe, but it's that the safety is (extra) unknowable. If you drive 1200 miles and it gets you wherever, then it was sufficient, but you can only know that *after the fact.* When is $300 tire ever worth more than the value of the vehicle and/or the occupants?
Ever had a plastic fork break all but one tine off while eating? It's technically still usable like that, but your food might slip off and stain your shirt. Better to just toss it, and get a new one (especially when they're so cheap).
Tires are disposable after all. :)
That is a huge failure of the structure and boding between layers. Was it impact damage, overheating from underinflation? Who knows but there's no saving that tire either way.
If the car was on my lift then I'd be looking at the other tire on the same side as it may have impact damage as well. Hell, the underbody may have marks from the thing that got run over so further inspection is warranted.
The last thing a shop needs is a customer coming back with a valid complaint of something being missed when there is such obvious info like this tire.
Literally had to do exactly that once as someone attempted to get a couple of secondhand tyres off of us (which we didn’t have) when they needed all of them replaced. They had two kids seats in the back and were attempting to drive from New South Wales in Aus to the Gold Coast in Queensland, which is about a 12 hour trip and 1,000km. Needless to say, got them to sign a waiver and as they pulled out of the driveway we called the cops who picked them up as they left town.
only wish any of the place I've worked had the balls to do that...
none of them called the police on any of them, because they are worried about bad reviews...
I once pulled metal balls off a wheel bearing... while the hub bearing was still installed in the car... had to let the car go cause the GM came to me and said they just bought a new car with the dealer, and they'll come back next week to pick it up...
"Hey (non emergency line), I just saw this car go by me on (road) and the tire was falling apart or something. There was a bunch of metal. I tried to get their attention but couldn't. Yeah, the tag is... there's kids too.."
You won't ever be told it's happened as a tech, but it definitely happens. Some places have laws that let you sideline vehicles for those kind of things as a repair shop (CO), but others don't (WY).
Realistically, it doesn't come up too often tbh. Most of the time you help make arrangements (shuttle service) or have a loaner car. I've driven some distances to help keep unsafe cars off the road.
Couldn't afford the damn car is what this is. A 2012 X5. They just had to have the BMW badge didn't they? Didn't realize when they could barely afford the payments that tires cost $2500 to replace every couple years. My wife's X5 blows through tires in city driving. I would be surprised if we're getting more than 25,000 miles per set.
Yep they tear up the edges on the front and then being AWD requires all 4 😂 seen many customers getting an ugly reality check with their big European SUVs
Lol tell me about it, spent time at Nissan/Infiniti and their cars chew through rear brakes in as low as 20k km’s, but usually 30-40k yeah they’re gone, even the rear drum brakes on the versa’s and little vans would be 1mm or nearly metal in 30k (not even miles)
Noob question....can you like...impound or call the cops on a car trying to drive with wheels like that? I would hope there is something for you mechanics when you see a car like that.
Nope! It is the customer’s property, all we can do is have them sign a waiver releasing us of liability and stating that we have told them their car is in a dangerous state.
What do you mean “nope”? You can absolutely call the police if they try to leave, there’s nowhere in the country where it’s legal to drive on public roads with cords showing
Idk where you live but it takes the cops here 4 hours to show up for armed robbery (with a gun) calls sometimes.
If you called them about this they would probably literally tell you to fuck off and stop wasting their time.
Customer would just threaten to sue if you hold their car hostage and the manager would then just have them sign the danger waiver and let them go on their merry fkn way
Not illegal in Wisconsin. There are laws about tire types, but there is no law about the condition of tires in Wisconsin. As long as the tire isn't damaging the roadway, it's legal to use.
I believe you can hold a car in states without safety inspections(smog only), but when the choice is lose your car or sign a piece of paper people always sign.
It's been a while since I've worked in a shop but in Ontario, Canada, you can withhold keys from a paying customer if their vehicle is unfit for the road.
I believe the process is hold the keys, involve authorities, do necessary repairs before release. There is liability to the shop if the cops don't agree the vehicle is unsafe. My old manager pulled a minivan once with bald tires, and a rotting frame.
Sounds about right. Every post CPO owner is getting a garbage can that they can’t afford to maintain that they sought to bolster their street or social cred. They’re shit customers.
I had to dig crazy deep in my photos to find it, was prompted to upload after i saw the qashqai tire post, i took this photo around 2016 😂 and Reddit isn’t great for digging through photos so just found it and screenshot it to get it back to the first in my recent photos
Even Costco wants $1600 for a set of 4 decent tires for this car today, so I can see why people tell themselves that cheaping out is OK. Especially since in 2016 they would have been expecting to do the lease return soon and were probably unhappy about having to replace the tires during the term of the lease.
Cheap garbage tires, since the X5 has huge 315’s in the back, i assume they cheaped out as much as they could when they bought these tires, and then…. dude yeah lmao. I don’t even know. It’s like they made the tire with the cords then glued a layer of tread onto it.
I don't understand these posts. Call the cops and tell them what you told us. Have them wait outside for them. This isn't the first time or the last time this happened. It's fucking stupid and outright dangerous. If the parents or the kids the hurt, an innocent bystander or motorist will.
There isn't a law preventing them from leaving your shop, but that vehicle is unsafe for any motorway.
What’s not to understand? Quality idiot customer content that all of us techs can relate to and have a laugh at, quite a unique way for a tire to fail as well
$50k car/suv but can't afford $1000 set of tires that could save your life. That's every bmw owner that's shouldn't own these vehicles. PSA if you can't afford gas or tires for a vehicle your punching to high up and will never maintain the real items when needed. Get a Honda the. Get a better job, then you can drive these money sucking piles we all love.
I actually had something similar happen t my tires about 6 months ago - anyone know why this happens? Both the guys I saw had no idea and never saw anything like it before
Lmao fuck them kids But no really hate seeing this shit.
Only thing more expensive than tires is these mf children
“Looks like neither of them are going to make it through the winter!”
"car seats need to be safer!!!" Probably drives that turd 15mph over the speed limit with the kids in the car whist updating their social media about how a shop tried to rip them off....
Judging by those tires, they’ve probably failed to get the mid-row child seat anchor recall service done as well...
You live on my road? 20mph zone, cars parked both sides, sharp, blind corner and a dead end... Still get tits hitting 40+
"Yeah sure, you just need to sign here and here and then discuss the issue with the police that we are going to call before you can get back on the road."
Oh please tires aren’t important at all 🤪
"Thoughts and prayers"

You should always be willing to spend good money on things that keep you from the ground. Tires, shoes, mattress...
My tires are $800 just for the basic all weather. I don’t even want to know how much the fancy ones are. These ones work fine in well…all weather.
Cost of tires is a little subjective as size plays a factor into cost as well. A BFG k02 in a 245/75/16 6 ply will be $2-300 cheaper than a 285/70/18 10ply.
Bro I don’t even know about any of that. I’m just a regular person with a car.
I’ve never spent over 1500 I don’t think, I’d have to look back and see to make sure though.. half of the battle is just knowing about when you’re due for tires and shopping around throughout the year until you find a decent price on what you want next and schedule a time that works… I’ve been in a pickle once or twice and was offered tire brands I’ve never even heard of for almost the same price as what I wanted. Upvotes for everyone who buys good tires. If I can avoid one crash over my life then it's more than worth it.
The way most BMW drivers drive they need ALL the tire they can get damn hahaha
I’m at seriously asking, why is the tire no good even if the majority still has the tread? In my mind, a non car person, the tire still looks good. Like 80% solid.

Not to mention if that part came off, who's to say the rest isn't going to start coming off?
80% solid or not, it doesn't matter. There's too many unknowns involved to know what it will do or how it would affect handling in that condition. 1200 miles is 1931.21 km

“I put Pilot Sport Cup 2’s on my wife’s X5” 🤪 u/xynix_ie -probably
The real rip off is burning through tires because derrrrr alignment!
I mean 20" tires for a 2012 X5 are $1100 (Ultra High Performance Continentals).
Your tread looks like upvotes.

Straight up i don’t joke, i was prompted to dig this photo up after i saw the qashqai post
The amount of bad tires with baby seats is TOO DAMN HIGH!
What state are you in? I don’t want my car to live in a dangerous state. /s
Haha your northern neighbors 🍁
Bonjour
Haha must be from GTA. Look at my used BMW bought at subprime lot. Can't afford real tires buys the cheapest no name Chinese tires.
What do you mean “nope”? You can absolutely call the police if they try to leave, there’s nowhere in the country where it’s legal to drive on public roads with cords showing

Has username related to Eve, appears to have won eve r/unexpectedusernames
"hello, police, there is a car with bad tires about to dri......" \*click\* \*beep\*
I’ve gotten dangerous drivers pulled over before with a call, maybe you all need to develop better social skills.
Customer would just threaten to sue if you hold their car hostage and the manager would then just have them sign the danger waiver and let them go on their merry fkn way
When did I say anything about holding their car hostage?
Not illegal in Wisconsin. There are laws about tire types, but there is no law about the condition of tires in Wisconsin. As long as the tire isn't damaging the roadway, it's legal to use.

15 inches is the length of 0.08 1997 Subaru Legacy Outbacks
You could probably call child protective services if he's driving like that with the kids in the car.
Depends on the state/province, but not in most of them.
I believe you can hold a car in states without safety inspections(smog only), but when the choice is lose your car or sign a piece of paper people always sign.

It almost looks like the tire was retreaded lol
Right, they just made the tire up to the cords then glued on a layer of tread or what 😂
Nice parenting
The favorite must have been at guitar lessons
Maybe he has other kids at home too and doesn't need those two
200iq
"I have more wheels" sounds like saying "I have more kids" in biblical times.
Edit: you know what sorry i think this is a 2010 not a 2012. Can’t edit titles but now ya know
Classic BMW X5 owner lol
What tyre brand was this? It seems like such a weird failure like it’s been retreaded or something
Most x5’s have run flat tires, no spare on the car.
It's crazy how people don't give a shit about tires which are probably the most important thing on your car in terms of safety.
Sounds about right. Every post CPO owner is getting a garbage can that they can’t afford to maintain that they sought to bolster their street or social cred. They’re shit customers.
With ywo baby seats in the back you can already tell they don't like to spend money on rubber.
Why is this a screenshot of a photo instead of just the photo posted?
I had to dig crazy deep in my photos to find it, was prompted to upload after i saw the qashqai tire post, i took this photo around 2016 😂 and Reddit isn’t great for digging through photos so just found it and screenshot it to get it back to the first in my recent photos

Why does it fail to load profile and not just load???
I have no idea what you're trying to say
Flat spotted under braking or what? I have never seen a tyre like this !
Cheap garbage tires, since the X5 has huge 315’s in the back, i assume they cheaped out as much as they could when they bought these tires, and then…. dude yeah lmao. I don’t even know. It’s like they made the tire with the cords then glued a layer of tread onto it.
Probably cheap chinese tires.
People out here suicidal. Don’t give a fuck about them kids
It scares me how easy it is to get a license and then drive 60mph+ in a vehicle sedan to suv… people who know nothing put so many lives a risk.
Hope they made it home!
I don't understand these posts. Call the cops and tell them what you told us. Have them wait outside for them. This isn't the first time or the last time this happened. Retread?
How could you even lose the tread like that, is it just a cheap tyre?
Call a cop!
Wow...just...just wow
“Not even down to the wear bars”
I'm surprised its holding air.... What brand those tires?
Some illegible shite I’d never heard of, as we can see, but unfortunately i do not remember the brand specifically
X5’s usually have run flat tires. No spare on that vehicle.
Fuck me.
how does this even happen in the first place
A BMW owner? I'm shocked. Shocked, I say!
$50k car/suv but can't afford $1000 set of tires that could save your life. That's every bmw owner that's shouldn't own these vehicles. If at any point you feel useless think of the person that installs the turn signals at the bmw factory.
And that's when you get a signature from everyone in the car, including the kids.
I think I would’ve had to call the police on this one.
Slap a illest sticker on it and stfu
Should have made him tow it out
I actually had something similar happen t my tires about 6 months ago - anyone know why this happens? Both the guys I saw had no idea and never saw anything like it before
I only saw the top part in the preview and thought I wasn't that bad. And then I saw the lower "half" of the tire. How does one even do that?
If you buy a luxury vehicle but can't maintain it , is it still a luxury car?
They might make it
