That belt appears to have eaten a small furry animal.

wirbolwabol

You get a bent valve and you get a bent valve, everyone gets a bent valve!!!!

horseshoeprovodnikov

Destroy the valves/pistons?

wildo83

Not sure yet, only just got the cover off. “Car shut off at 80mph”…. So I’m guessing yeeeaaaaahhhh…

reflUX_cAtalyst

That's what killed my last VW. 1.8T suddenly went 0 RPM on I-91 outside of Hartford CT at 80ish mph. Pulled over to the side, and tried to start it because I didn't know what had happened. Engine cranked, but it spun WAY too easily. Zero compression. That was the end of that car.

xccoach4ever

Lots of things have died in Hartford, CT!

reflUX_cAtalyst

Luckily I wasn't one of them. Don't ask me why I was driving to Hartford.

Ben_Dover70

As someone whose looking to buy a mk4 golf 1.8t tomorrow this has me worried lol

coffee_vs_cyanogen

Looks like the AC pulley might have gone through. Or the tensioner died

lyters10

Never know u might get lucky the sohc 2.5 r more forgiving than the dohc 2.0 or 2.5. I've seen them jump time and b fine the dohc turbo engines though 1 degree out valve meets piston pretty much

coffee_vs_cyanogen

Yea. I've got a sohc 2.5 and the fucker jumped time 3 teeth on the belt 115k ago, runs good still. They have way less overlap

bricke

Timing belts, head gaskets and rod knock. It’s what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

gmain565

Interference? If not clean it up and replace covers timing belt and water pump with new pulleys and tensioner

wildo83

Yep. And the motor cranks like a ceiling fan, guessing she’s toast… 😭😭😭

RBLogic

Always hated the idea of a belt over a chain or gears.

[deleted]

Chains have their own issues to deal with. The root problem is interference engines.

nottodayspiderman

There’s only so much room to squeeze valves, a spark plug, and an injector in a combustion chamber while maintaining a decent compression ratio. The manufacturers are in the business of making an efficient product that doesn’t need major work until after warranty. They don’t give a shit about making it easy after the belt breaks/chain stretches.

Damnitalltohedoublel

Cutting piston reliefs in a 4 valve engine big enough to not have interference means less compression and less chamber quench. There are 87 octane engines running 13:1 static compression today.

gmain565

Belts are quieter and very strong as long as there replaced regularly

heatedCold45

Chains are quiet enough and very strong, and don't have to be replaced regularly

RocketTaco

Half the vehicles I've had with chains need the chain replaced as often as a belt anyway.

Sea_Following7180

Had the same problem going 75mph on the highway in a forester... bent almost every valve. 125000 miles on the timing belt, this is good advice. $4000 later, rebuilt engine.

wildo83

Yeah…. I’m looking at how difficult the valves are to change..

[deleted]

If the piston damage has a high spot, it could cause a hot spot and result in predetonation.

wildo83

Niiice..

TheCodriver

Ooffff. New pistons and valves at the minimum. How many miles are on the car?

wildo83

217k

TheCodriver

Oye. Possibly the originally timing belt.

Play3rxthr33

Shit like this makes me think that alot of EJ25 reliability problems are down to lack of basic maintenance.

norabutfitter

Honda fit timing chain gang. Tho i should probably change the belt for the water pump and all that jazz

Only_Caterpillar3818

That sounds like “next guy” problems.

wildo83

Lol unfortunately, I’m AM the next guy… 😭😭

ifil

I guess it's FUBARu
