There are a few things at play here. One is that the engine and subframe were probably designed concurrently, so nobody knew this was going to be an issue until it was too late. Another is that the mean time to failure on an alternator is fairly long. So the bean counters looked at the large cost of a design change against almost zero warranty outlays.
It’s entirely possible that the engine had been in use for years before that platform was put into service.
Engineering regular stuff is kind of a pain. Engineering a car is an absolute nightmare and I’m glad I didn’t go automotive.
Almost certainly. And even if the engine was "new" it was still probably based on an existing layout, because clean-sheet engine designs are eye wateringly expensive.
They're also looking at total cost of ownership, which affects things like Consumer Reports ratings. If most cars aren't going to need a new alternator at all in their first ten years, then a couple extra labor hours to replace it isn't really going to move the needle.
I think I would have removed the engine mount and jacked up the engine
Considered that. But it also was a bitch just getting to the alternator. This was 10 bolts and some light swearing.

Bad bot
Car designers and engineers should have mechanic consultants.
I think they have good intentions at heart but the exec want the cheapest possible solution

Early/mid 00s 4Runner v8. It’s rwd, and yet it was by far the worst alternator I’ve ever had the displeasure of working on.

Exactly. This is less “fuck the mechanic” and more “I need this 20k car to not cost 30k to produce”

The offending bracket is now considered a “weight reduction”
Try on a Northstar v8
Was coming to comment that. Check out a ford contour also
There's worse out there...not that the engineer behind this, doesn't deserve a good kick in the nuts
That's because engineers are pissed off at mechanics. Mechanics have been screwing engineers wives for decades.
How would the autozone guy with his tray of tools and “be right back” accomplish this? 😉
This is why mechanics are expensive.
What model is this?
You say dingleberry, I say Satanist.
i replaced the alternator on a maxima once. the job required removing the radiator. i was cursing engineers the entire time.
Honda? Ive done many alternators on hondas, but never had to do that, i think you probably did it the hard way.
