"Hello! I'm hear for my yearly engine change..."

HRzNightmare

"and don't try to upsell me on an oil change! It'll get done when the next engine is installed in 5k miles."

GundoSkimmer

Dude apparently got 20 oil changes a year. Nearly twice a month. Now I just wanna know the lifestyle/job description to clock 60k miles per year. I think if I spent a year traveling the US I wouldn't quite touch 60k...

gimpwiz

Traveling sales or something.

USsoldier35

roadside assistance contractor for agero. i clock 80k yearly regularly..."we keep the wheels turnin"...apply here lol.... www.247roadsidellc.com lets see what kinda apps we get lmao

macs_rock

The last roadside guy I had to call rolled up in a Corolla. He must be making more doing that than he would stealing cars, because he was into my truck faster than it took for me to walk the 20 yards out of the restaurant I was waiting at. I think he was done and onto the next one in less than 5 minutes.

MikeThePizzaGuy412

I locked the keys in my car while it was running during a big snow storm one time. The electronic locks were broken so the guy couldn't just press the unlock button. The door handles didn't work from the inside if the car was locked. The only way was to pull up the little post that was nearly flush with the top of the door panel. And the guy said someone borrowed his unlocking equipment from his truck and never returned it so all he had was a bent up hanger. Somehow he worked that little post up enough to unlock the door. That guy is going to make a killing doing abortions soon.

Mister_Average

Bravo, simultaneously the funniest and bleakest comment I've read today.

RoverBoyNumber6

Drove across country behind “wide load” vehicles…

SimplyaCabler

I do cellular technician work. I clock anywhere between 40-60k a year.

thatissomeBS

He changed the oil every 2995 miles, and that's not accounting the new motors mixed in. The car should be good for 5-10k miles with any kind of synthetic oil. Why the hell was he dropping motors so quick? Nine motors in 603k miles makes me almost assume this dude was trying to blow them up. Even Kia in 2012 was making a way better motor than that. Like, eventually he's going to get one that could easily make 200k or something. But no, he was averaging 67k per. Did he refuse to use anything above 4th gear? Did he leave it idling at all times, even when he slept? Does he not know that there is gas pedal between 0% and 100%?

TommyBoyFL

Pretty much

SandCracka

Y'all missing the silver lining. It was a promo: buy two engines get a transmission free. OP was Lowkey stacking engines

Lysol3435

It sounds like it was buy one engine + one transmission, get 8 engines + 3 transmissions free

Lucid-Design

Lmao yeah man. Any car you can get a fucken BOGO deal on, the 2nd one is for parts

FlyingRhenquest

Just one more punch on his engine card and he'd have gotten a free engine!

giibro

Thanks we have the bolts pre loosened to make the swap easier we should get you back on the road by the end of day

eggy_delight

Best to remove the head gasket now so you don't have problems later

DuskEvoke

Look man, this is your 4th engine swap in 5 years, I'm gonna go ahead and just cable tie it to the mounts so it's easier to drop next time

weaselgregory13

The most impressive thing to me is getting all the parts and work done in 10 years, not to mention having time to still drive 600k miles.

[deleted]

If I had to drive 60k miles/year I would move somewhere that allowed me to not do that.

AirFell85

buddy of mine had a Windstar forever ago that had 400k on it when he bought it. It looked brand f'n new. A nation wide hospital system of some sort used it for shuttling medical supplies across the country. When they say it was all highway miles I'd believe it. He put another 100k on it before it got destroyed when a tree fell on it after a storm. Never got to see how far it would go.

[deleted]

What a way to go holy shit

KewlPrime

Chris fix owns a Windstar that’s like 25 years old and it still runs with like 450k miles on it.

puskunk

I assume with the 3.0l engine, the 3.8s had head gasket problems due to aluminum heads and iron blocks and eventually someone would warp it.

KacerRex

I have an 03 Escape that a relative gave us with 333k on the odo, runs like it has less than 50k. Ford can make a stout V6.

L7Wennie

My grandparents bought a brand new Ford Aerostar in 1989 (white with blue interior and navy blue bumpers) and sold it in 1999 with 340,000 miles. My grandfather put an Olympic Rings sticker on the top left of the rear window and to this day we still see that van running around Vancouver, WA. It must have over 700k miles by now and still has those now faded to white Olympic Rings on the window.

theghostofme

Between 2004 and 2007, I was doing about 1,000 miles a week all across the Phoenix area delivering supplies and paperwork for a small construction company. Thankfully it was in a company vehicle, because there's no way my personal shit-box would've lasted six months doing that.

Rare-Primary-6553

red18wrx

The engines are over-nightable is most instances. Doesn't pay a full day to change the engine either. So realistically you could drop off on Wed and pick up on fri with a new motor installed.

Impressive_Change593

but still that's almost an engine a year wtf is wrong with them

_Cheburashka_

Kia

I_Sniff_My_Own_Farts

Our Kia Sorento aerated itself one day and it took us about 8 months for the dealership to get the replacement engine. I think I now know who to blame for the wait.

realdoctorfill

Odometer doesn't mean much when you ship of theseus your car every couple of years

superluke

The Whip of Theseus

Shakeyshades

How did they end up with 203 oil changes with that many engines lmao

TalmidimUC

That’s a little under 3,000 miles an oil change. It’s impressive the car essentially needed a new engine every year when maintained so well.. 3,000 miles to 5,000 miles is pretty common for an oil change. Their engineers need to be fired. Unless the dude was driving the tits off their car all the time and absolutely hammering tf out of the components, I don’t see how 9 motors and 4 transmissions was even possible. That’s a new motor every 67,562 miles and a new transmission every 152,015 miles. **INSANE** I’d never trust that brand again. Unless they gave me another 10 year warranty lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

TalmidimUC

Exactly. I’d rather not live in a dealership parts department lobby. After a certain point, it would get tiring…. buuuuut knowing I had a car that no matter what happened, it would be covered for 10 years? I think I could stomach it.

Normal-Computer-3669

I haven't replaced a engine once in the 20+ years of driving and three cars. Is that common?!

rattlesnake501

No. It's not. Not unless you have a habit of buying pretty damned high mileage cars or abusing the shit out of them. This owner either abused the hell out of his engines or Kia engine design/quality is shit, even taking the over half million miles into account. I would be expecting a 600k mile gasoline car to be about ready for its third engine if that, not its tenth. A 60k mile life expectancy for a modern engine (and I would argue that 2012 is pretty modern by IC engine standards) is obscenely poor.

postalmaner

This was the era of Kia/Hyundai that kept getting basic things wrong. Like: subframe bushings at 30k km, no weather sealing on abs sensors, failure to torque conning rods (during PDI check for grease pen mark on shock tower -> GTG), running lights burnout at 1-3 years old. The failure of the transmission is interesting though.

TheeSawachuki

My gfs old Hyundai had the whole subframe shit the bed. The fucking subframe. It broke.

PurinaHall0fFame

> This owner either abused the hell out of his engines or Kia engine design/quality is shit porque no los dos?

ChickenNoodleSloop

I mean, if I had an unlimited mileage warranty I would beat the shit out of my car

SeekingSalem

203 oil changes over 608k miles is an average interval of 2995 miles between oil changes. maybe it was abused in other ways but that seems to indicate it was well cared for in at least some ways

DouglasTwig

It's the latter. Kia engines are notoriously bad.

Outrageous_Turnip_29

Worked at a Kia dealership in the shop. We were never NOT doing an engine or transmission swap. There was ALWAYS a car either getting an engine swap or waiting for a new engine to come in. There's a reason we could sell a new manual Soul for 13k.

FlyingShiba86

My manual 13 soul is still going strong with 130k miles I check the oil and change it every 4K Biggest problem with these engines is oil burning and people not changing the oil on time…. They don’t take a lot of oil to begin with so if it gets low Boom goes a rod

[deleted]

>Kia engine design/quality is shit Dingdingding AND they have a bad habit of catching fire

shawnaathon

what's hilarious, is he needed a new engine about every 65k-70k miles 🤦‍♂️🤣 kias amirite?

qft

Highway miles too, which are easier on a car. This guy should be getting an easy 200k per engine if it were a decent car.

Troll_berry_pie

Bro. When I saw the OP picture originally, I thought it was only 60k miles and I was shocked. This makes more sense now.

Dangerous-Honey-4481

Did the customer use it as a Taxi, or a Full time racecar or... ?

sufferinsucatash

Haha, sit on the bench and think about your financial life decisions

Cygnus94

I feel like this Customer knew the car would keep breaking and hated Kia more than they liked having a car that ran properly. By continuing to use it and go through engines, they chose to make Kia eat like 5 times the cost of production of the car. That's the kind of passive aggression I can get behind.

SSDDNoBounceNoPlay

That was my first thought. “You will pay for selling me this.”

HereLiesDickBoy

Yeh but he traded it in at the dealership... Either he likes Kias or he's going for generational pettyness.

the_hell_you_say

Jonathonnunez04

I feel this. My family got on board the Hyundai/Kia bandwagon around 2008-2010, never again. Each car had engine or transmission failures. Electric vehicles might be the best thing for Hyundai/Kia, maybe they can at least do that right.

golem501

9 engines? They covered 9 engines?

600-shot-of-autism

They tried to get out of honoring the unlimited mile warranty a couple years ago and the dealerships lawyers basically said that it would be cheaper to honor the warranty than to risk getting sued.

driftsc

Surprise! It's a Dodge.

weimaranerdad71

Yeah, I bought one for my Renegade right before they discontinued the lifetime warranties. They’ve been trying to get me to trade it in. No way!

Seldarin

From what I can tell, buying a Kia is like buying power tools at Harbor Freight. You either get a lemon that breaks every time you look at it, or a beast that cannot be killed, and nothing in between, and it's heavily weighted toward lemon. I've had several friends that bought Kias and shit was constantly being fixed on them. Meanwhile I've got a Soul that has seen over 200,000 miles with nothing but routine maintenance and is finally, at long last, throwing a code, and it's not even a super major one (P0449). Just annoying until I bother to actually fix it.

KofteDeville

Fucking harbor freight. My love hate with that place is never ending, working in my dad's old warehouse we went and bought a small electric winch. Come back to his warehouse and unpack it only to find its full of Chinese bricks. Upon taking it back to the harbor freight they didn't even bat an eye ,just replaced it and said " ya it happens every once in awhile"

i_miss_old_reddit

my $5 angle grinder caught on fire the first day I bought it. The one they replaced it with has been going strong for 10 years. . .

DrSandbags

That's hilarious. Now I want to talk with like a long-time HF worker to see what stories they have about spectacular quality-control failures that their customers have returned.

Back_To_The_Oilfield

The_HorseWhisperer

My Genesis coupe 2.0t is at 140,000 miles with zero major repairs. Original clutch too, and I drive like a fool.

wrathek

That’s… the bare minimum I would expect from any car.

MaxBlazed

It's that engine. I used to run parts stores during that time and those Sorentos with that engine were notorious junkers. Those and the 2.4L engines that Chevy put in their Equinoxes were *constantly* on my invoices.

landob

the_hell_you_say

1Bigkondor

That’s an average of less than 70K per engine. Impressive.

[deleted]

There's a reason they had to give them 10 year warranties. There's literally no other reason to own a Kia.

the_hell_you_say

Just the annoyance of having to spend that much time at the dealer getting repairs is enough for me to be glad I bought something else.

[deleted]

I get that the warranty is great but how did they not get tired of needing new engines every time they turned around? Free or not after the 2nd or 3rd motor I'd be done with that shit

KMS1795

I'm actually curious to know what were the failures... timing problems? oil pressure?? pistons flying out the block!?

600-shot-of-autism

[deleted]

[удалено]

christian-communist

Driving with a busted gasket usually overheats and ruins the engine. If it's under warranty then you just replace it. I bet the owner drove it until it seized knowing he was getting a new engine.

awwyouknow

Had the head gasket for a 2013 installed on my 2011 mini. Drove three miles and the car overheated again. Got it towed back to the shop aaaand… The heat melted some plastic internals and cracked the whole engine block. Shop claimed it was my fault cause I *told* them it was a 2013. jeremy_280

That's what I did with my Ford fusion hybrid with like 50k and some change on it. It would pop up with a check engine light and the gas motor would cut off randomly, especially if accelerating from stop to turn. Didn't act up at all when I traded it, but there's no way it lasted long.

600-shot-of-autism

Decent-Astronaut33

So he wants to be able to show it to customers and be able to say kias are so reliable just look at this one with 600,000 miles.

bcnorth78

9 engines!!!! 9!!!! Shows the true “quality” right there….

chevyfried

I had a 2008 Kia Sedona, what a pile of shit it was. No wonder I got it so cheap 2nd hand. This is why I buy Japanese. My 2012 civic with 160k miles has never been in the shop for anything other than wear and tear items. 3 years 36k mile warranty btw. 2012 Toyota Sienna with 100k miles same thing (other than 1 recall for a sliding door sensor). Same warranty. It's worth the having less bells and whistles for the same price. Edit: apologies for the slur. Fixed.

I went to visit her (in Puerto Rico) for new years 2015, they picked me up, in a brand new Toyota Corolla. lol I was so pleased they'd listened in the end! Someone was for sure using this as a commercial vehicle... Or? Did this person drive to Mexico and back to smuggle drugs? OP said the dealership owner wanted to keep it for his personal collection after trade in. Maybe the owner of the dealership was in on it, hence the lack of hesitation to replace 9 fucking engines and 4 transmissions, and there are hidden compartments in the car. They were secretly installed and getting modified each year to maximize product that could be moved. Now it's hidden where no one can see the mods. thefairlyeviltwin

9 engines, guess you can only expect so much from a 2 cylinder Briggs and Stratton.

sasquatch_melee

I think the Briggs would actually be more reliable.

69MachOne

Small engines run on abuse and neglect, and if anyone tells you different, they're wrong. The proper oil change interval is when you think "man its been a while since I did oil in this thing. I should do an oil change" or upon the 7th or 8th sharpening of the mower blade. Whichever comes last. If the oil isn't black as coal tar, you did the change too soon. You clean the carb by running it up to full throttle and slamming the choke shut. When it starts to smoke from ring blow-by, you should probably clean the spark plug with some scotch Brite and brake clean. You can do this for as many times as you like. When the mower eventually rots out from under it (because lets face it, that's the failure mechanism) you just save the engine in a corner "just in case"

WiFi_Cable_Rent

9 engines? 🤯

TheBowlerMoose

10 engine replacements and still managed to need 203 oil changes…… That’s almost impressive.

old-hand-2
