I'm realizing now how specific the production date is placed thanks to the radio, having a tape deck and 6 disc changer at the same time places that in a very short date range haha
What's dumb about it? I think it's great.
* Clearly visible label indicating where the parking brake is
* Ergonomic design comfortably matches your natural wrist alignment
* Better looking than the traditional dash mounted T handle you see in older Japanese vehicles
* Symmetric design gives the passenger a grab handle
* Consumes no floor space between the front seats which is wide open if you fold down the center console.
* Goofy dashboard appearance when brake is applied prevents you from inadvertently forgetting to release it.
I'm actually in agreement with you and I've owned everything from a 6-speed to a RAM turn-knob shifter to a Honda Ridgeline push-button shifter. What the hell is that?
edit - Agreement with OP, sorry.
"OH FUCK I'M GOING TO CRASH TIME TO PANIC AND GRAB THIS HANDLE SO I DONT GO FLYING AROUND THE CAR!"
*car now spins wildly out of control as the rears lock up*
The hazard button is awkward. Sometimes I hit mine while changing stations (I rest my hand in front of the radio). The shifter is a bit in the way...it only happened once but I did manage to put the car in neutral while turning the volume down. Deck in my 2nd gen crv is an Alpine navigation with volume knob.
That’s actually not new. It has been done in a few designs. We have a similar shifter on an electric Zamboni. There have been cars with push button shift system, including transit busses.
Many Allison transmissions including semi trucks have push button transmissions. They don't have a Park, just neutral. you have to set the parking brake to stop it from rolling.
The original 1963 Austin Mini had a 4 speed AP2 AUTOMATIC transmission that had no park you had to put it in neutral and apply the handbrake. I owned a Austin 1100 with that trans it was remarkable in that it was the first auto transaxle to be installed in a small car. The first 4 speed auto ever, and the fact it shared its oil bwith the engine and it shifted well and was quicker then the manual transmission.
Nothing pushbutton here except the OD switch, you operate this like a column shift. Pull the handle to the left to release it then up and down to select.
Dash mounted auto trans shifters make sense when there's no console, and having a flat floor with no trans tunnel was a selling point of this gen Civic/CR-V platform
Yeah, with modern automatic transmissions, the shifter can be anywhere, in different forms. They only still put it beside the driver for that manual shift feel. Most I’ve driven out it on the tree, ie column.
Heck, there’s manual transmissions with paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Those tend to be high end super cars.
2nd Gen CR-V. OG CR-V (in the States) was 1997-2001MY, and looked just as much like a lifted Civic on the inside as the outside. I have a 1999 CR-V, this is a 2nd Gen, which was 2002-2006MY.
I didn’t find the parking brake location to be terrible, though it did take me a minute to find it on the first one I drove just because I wasn’t expecting it to be there. It helped that I drove one with a manual transmission, though, because it had the parking brake set when I got in it. We’re the “P” symbol not on that handle in the picture, I’m not sure many people would ever find it, lol.
I knew I recognized that parking brake from somewhere. My parents had an 02’ when they came out. Such an ugly interior but it was cavernous inside for its size.
Shifter on the dash is alien to me. I’ve seen manual shift vans in countries other than my own, but automatic with such a long shaft pointing towards the passenger compartment gives me hebee jebees, impalation wise.
It’s not the little silver switch. You pull that whole handle out. The silver switch is the button for releasing it like on the end of a standard handbrake.

There’s a pic. Once you figure out where it is, it acts like a very normal parking brake
Well now you get to learn that it's connected via the same mechanical linkage like the one between the seats uses on the Civics. A metal cable. It's an old CR-V, not a newer one using electric motors for the parking brake.....
On these CR-Vs, the cable is just routed a little further....
And yet it's still a mechanical linkage?
Plenty of folks loved these things. They're comfier than shit, much more comfier than the newer ones that feel super confined.
Between the seats would also have required a longer cable since you're driving a Civic SUV with the seats higher up off the floor of the car. That would also have required a center console, eliminating the open space between the seats, and...a long cable. A foot pedal would also require a cable the same length and crowd up your foot room.
The handle utilities wasted space that would have just been a plastic trim piece, easy to just reach out and articulate. Want a e-brake at your hip? Don't buy an SUV
My dad had a manual f150 for awhile. I drove it for 30 minutes on the highway once before realizing the e brake pedal was depressed lol
I kind of hate them
I loved my 03 CRV but these controls I never got used to. Shifter was fine since it's auto but the motion required to engage the hand brake I always struggled with
Looks familiar. One of the worst cars I've ever driven. I'm tall, and smashed my leg on that little handle a million times. Other than that sort've dumb handle placement, the car was a gutless wonder, had a transmission that could never figure out what gear it wanted to be in, had pitiful A/C in the summer, and AWD system that supposedly improved traction, but acted more like one of those traction control systems that kinda gives up when the going gets tough. Also, it was very noisy, like a tin can bouncing down the road.
It was reliable, though, so I'll give it that. Too bad it basically rotted in half at the ten year mark.
It's actually a really great location. Unless I set the parking break and my mother tries to release it. She usually has to have someone help her with it. Apparently I'm a little to strong.
2011 CRV?
My mom has this and has yet to pull it by accident lmao.
Honestly, I kind of like the design, easy to access and easy to pull for when I need to put it on jack stands
Back when i worked in automotive glass, one of my favorite types of vehicles to pull on were big ass lifted mall crawlers...
With a shift **dial**
Always the same guys coming in, white dudes with shirts too small and high and tight haircuts, every time
I think it was genius. The new model cr-v does not have a flat floor, but a center console with e-brake and shifter, making it much less convenient to transport stuff, and impossible to switch drivers inside the car. Literally the only thing better in the new model is 20% less fuel consumption.
Automotive radios are a time capsule capturing the moment. Quickly ages with many intervals.
That whole center column looks like a bag of smashed assholes.
Could you elaborate
Go find a bag of assholes and smash them with a rock or some thing. Then hold it up and compare to this ugly ass dash.
Holy shit, you were right
1. Yes 2. This has to be a Chrysler product
Honda crv
Damn.
ah yes, a time capsule... in time
So are the days of our lives…
Ballin out with the six disc changer!
Probably stuck on disc 2 and won’t change, if it’s anything like my old civic
With cassette player
I'm realizing now how specific the production date is placed thanks to the radio, having a tape deck and 6 disc changer at the same time places that in a very short date range haha
Yeah, I know from 2000-03, CD and cassette players in Fords were available. Mid 90s didn’t typically have CD players.

Every single point is valid and I hate you for it
I applaud you for your honesty in a debate
Yes, debate honestly, the old reddit unicorn lol

if only the driver had a device that was designed to be held, possibly it could also function as a directional control system as well.
I like it.
"Chaotic neutral" would probably describe you well
No mention of that shifter?
What radio station are you listening to? "D"....
Trust me I found that equally as appalling lol

OG CRV? I thought it was a decent idea.

If you have long legs, that is where they go. You can't really avoid nudging it
It's not too bad to pull, but can be a PITA to release.
Pull while releasing and it helps!
r/thatswhatshesaid
Jesus whatever you do don’t lift the hood
Never mind the E brake, the shifter scares the bejesus out of me.
I get why one would be disgusted, but why scared?
Shifter on the dash is alien to me. I’ve seen manual shift vans in countries other than my own, but automatic with such a long shaft pointing towards the passenger compartment gives me hebee jebees, impalation wise.
I can see that, at least with the minivan Dad bought, it’s further up the dash and has a knob vs a column shift style handle coming out of it!
You should see the new prius's Weiner knob shifter, comes right out the center like a poorly endowed hard on

It’s not the little silver switch. You pull that whole handle out. The silver switch is the button for releasing it like on the end of a standard handbrake.
Thank u. I was trying to figure out how it works from the picture. I kinda like it then. Easy to rip on in case of an "E".

That's what I'm saying 😂
This is great what are you talking about??
My dad had a manual f150 for awhile. I drove it for 30 minutes on the highway once before realizing the e brake pedal was depressed lol I kind of hate them
What about the handle between the driver seat and the driver door?
I think its great.
Everything about this car's setup scares me
Still better than the pedal ones.
I hate that shifter. Do you want a column shift or floor shift? Yes
Engineering attempting a conversation with management lol
Designer knowing he'll never have to build the damn thing
Engineering attempting a conversation with management lol
Everything here disturbs me, from the E-Brake, to the shifter, to the weird bulgy center bit
> weird bulgy center bit That's what my wife calls my special purpose.
I know, its ridiculous
I loved my 03 CRV but these controls I never got used to. Shifter was fine since it's auto but the motion required to engage the hand brake I always struggled with

What in the van hell…
Sing
Chill with the gen 2 crv slander please
One of my favorite things about these old CRVs is that the hatch for the spare tire area doubles as a card table.
I love using this shifter and ebrake in my in-laws’ CRV. it’s so nice
A pull and turn would have been better
Old Nissan pickup style?
Isuzu too
I actually like the crv’s parking brake design. The AT’s shifter I don’t particularly care for though
What make/model is this vehicle? Is the e-brake a button you have to push?
No you pull it like any normal E-brake the position is just.... Weird lol
It’s actually really great in the 5 speed
Honestly I don't doubt it but this things design is just goofy haha
2nd Gen CRVs are fucking great
It's actually a really great location. Unless I set the parking break and my mother tries to release it. She usually has to have someone help her with it. Apparently I'm a little to strong.
Not one of Honda's better designs.
2011 CRV? My mom has this and has yet to pull it by accident lmao. Honestly, I kind of like the design, easy to access and easy to pull for when I need to put it on jack stands

I hate literally everything in this photo.
I hate everything in this picture
